That's an awful lot of exposition for any one film to handle. Jon Favreau's Iron Man wrestles with those responsibilities as well as a relatively unique conundrum: How do you make audiences care about a character whose face is hidden under a metallic scowl? The Iron Man filmmakers' answer is to cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role and keep him out of the Iron Man suit for as long as possible.

Downey stars as dashing billionaire playboy Tony Stark—part Howard Hughes, part Errol Flynn—who leads a life unencumbered by reflection until he's captured and held hostage in Afghanistan by terrorists using his company's weapons. Downey escapes by building a crude version of his Iron Man suit. Upon returning home, Downey perfects the robotic flying suit, but when he announces that his company is getting out of the weapons business he makes himself an inviting target to rivals, including enigmatic father figure Jeff Bridges, who looks disconcertingly like Winter Kills co-star Sterling Hayden with his shaved head and mad-prophet beard.

Iron Man takes its sweet time getting Downey into the Iron Man suit, and it doles out big action setpieces sparingly once man has fused triumphantly with machine. Downey is so much fun as a breezy cad that it's a shame he spends so much time brooding and luxuriating in obsession. Like Ang Lee's Hulk, Iron Man is a comic-book blockbuster characterized as much by heavyweight acting and sober intellectual concerns about the use and misuse of power and technology as the usual comic-book foolishness. But Iron Man finds a much more palatable, audience-friendly balance between delirious spectacle and tortured introspection thanks largely to Downey, a great actor who's also a great entertainer. His relationship with a fire-extinguishing robot is funnier and more poignant than the central relationship between humans in most movies, and there's nothing arbitrary about love interest/long-suffering assistant Gwyneth Paltrow. Having gotten all that exposition out of the way in a brisk and entertaining fashion, Favreau paves the way for more pure fun and excitement in future entries. Iron Man is the rare comic-book movie that makes the prospect of a sequel seem like a promise instead of a threat.

Iron Man is the 1st MCU movie and one of Marvel's best.

It's actually the most grounded MCU movie, and this helps Robert Downey Jr. impress with his performance of Tony Stark's character, the tech wizard and playboy who goes from amoral weapon producer to humanity's benefactor as Iron Man.

This origin story is actually great compared to other MCU movies, and the invention of the Iron Man suit is depicted very well.

The only bad thing is the name "Ten Rings" given to a gang in the desert, a name which teased Iron Man's arch nemesis Mandarin, but he never appeared.

Whoever decided to cast RDJ should get the biggest raise that has ever been given; this movie would be considerably worse without him in the title role. Most, if not all of the films funniest lines or key emotional moments would fall flat if not for him. It’s paced and directed very well, too. It never really gets boring and ends right about where it should. However, it’s held back by a weak villain, a somewhat undercooked romance, and a lack of emotional impact outside of the first third where Tony is kidnapped. But it can be quickly forgiven because of its smart and funny script combined with the power of its perfectly chosen lead. Expand

This is a very well done origin story that is also incredibly entertaining. Tony Stark's journey to Iron Man is nicely paced to where it doesn't drag like some origin stories, and we get plenty of "Iron Man is a badass" moments throughout the film. There are some very unrealistic moments like when Tony is thrown into a wall while testing the suit and magically sustains no injuries, but those are small nitpicks. Iron Man remains one of the best MCU movies to date. Expand

Iron Man finds itself as a fantastic example of the action/comedy blend. Tony Stark is a likable character full of personality, emotion, and quips. This film knows when it is okay to pop a joke and when it instead needs to be serious. It is through this blend that the movie becomes a re-watchable overall joyful film that still can be taken seriously. The characters are fantastic in this film and RDJ, Gweneyth Paltrow, and Jeff Bridges' performances both sell help sell the film and its "formula" as something that continues to work for Marvel (although the villain's motivations could have been elaborated on a bit more at the end).

The pacing of the movie is also fantastic. The action set pieces (although now appearing a bit dated) are still enjoyable and they are spaced out throughout the film such that they allow for the characters and their personalities to really shine. As mentioned above, the characters and their flaws are what really sell this movie and that is in part due to the effective pacing by Jon Favreau and his team.

Overall, while Iron Man by itself is nothing terribly revolutionary, its impact would be, all while the film still holds up to this day as an enjoyable standalone superhero film.

It's always fun to go back to the MCU's humble beginnings to see how the small seeds were planted.

After the wonderful send-off to the character that was Endgame, coming back to the first Iron Man and seeing Tony Stark build his first armor, I can't help but feel like amazed by what this franchise was able to achieve.

I knew Tony Stark had a big arc over the course of all the movies, but I didn't realise just how much he had really changed until this rewatch.

Tony telling Yinsen that he has no family hits different after Endgame.

Iron Man was the first film in the now famous and highly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. This film is insanely entertaining and possibly one of the best comic book movies ever made. This film is filled with so many things that make this film so vibrant and entertaining throughout. Lets start with the characters. Tony Stark, famously played by Robert Downey Jr is simply amazing. He is such a charismatic and fun character to watch that you simply wonder how RDJ does it. Robert Downey Jr is incredibly charming in this film and the character's blend of sarcasm, self-loathing and regret throughout simply makes this performance flawless. The supporting cast also do very well within the film. Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane may not have the most character depth and motivation but Jeff Bridges plays the character with such precision that you can't help but be entertained. Also Terrance Howard as James Rhodes is extremely underrated and personally I believe he is as good if not better then Don Cheadle as James Rhodes. Also Gwyneth Paltrow, who i'm not exactly the biggest fan of was very good in this film. Another great aspect of this film is that it is a very compelling and original origin story. Tony's story ark of going from a sarcastic, arrogant and narcissistic individual to learning the fault of his ways and realising that his actions and motivations hurt people is very compelling. Also the visuals are stunning. You can barely tell this film is over 10 years old due to how well the visual effects look. Iron Man flying through the sky looks as real then as it does now 10 years later. My one criticism is that the film fails to offer a good 3rd act. This is where the film really goes down hill. The main problem with it is there is no reason to why it is really happening. The motivations of the villain are unclear to the point why you are questioning the reason the final battle is happening. Its very bothering but not to the point where the film suffers too much. But it does help that this bad 3rd act is followed by a terrific ending which I won't spoil. Overall Iron Man is a very compelling comic book film which I believe could be one of the best ever. Expand

Despite Favreau's initial decision in choosing a fresh face, he ended up delighted due to his charismatic, natural and comfortable attitude. He did not realise it yet, but he was moulding with the right measures a whole superhero cinematic universe which lasted until today and still goes for more."
...
The filmmakers took the proper time to introduce a character whose production was undecided since New Line Pictures argued that the main character [Iron Man] had no potential to be brought up to the theatres. Therefore, planning from scratch a prosperous superhero who was not related to the typical Fantastic Four, X-Men or Spider-Man [famous superhero films of the 2000s] was quite a challenge. However, the director unquestionably demonstrated his skills at the visual effects, the rock metal music, the accurate dialogues for each moment and finally, the remarkable development of each persona. How exactly?
...
Establishing the visual effects of a high-speed-altitude enthusiast was marvellous, considering the time of the creation. The way Favreau adjusted the Iron Man gave numerous innovative perspectives of a superhero while in battle. If we first watched the 'Spidey Sense', then it was time to behold the flying upper and upper. What an achievement ladies and gentleman! Taking into account the sound effect, it was splendid in every single way because it gave decent time to evoke emotions, from sadness to awesomeness, it permitted to feel the sensation of building a strong armour or flying as fast as possible. Man! That AC/DC hard rock music was well-defined to this fascinating character. Did I mention that Downey's son is growing on music? He has a band, and it's called "The Dose Band". Just watch the School of Rock's report. Probably there is where the influence came by. On the other hand, this film gives such iconic quotes which will live on our memory: "Is it better to be feared or respected?", "Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk", "I am Iron Man". WOW! What potential we have got here! Finally, but not least, the impeccable action scenes and drama ones were the highest achieves Iron Man had got. The sequence in the cavern traped with Dr Yinsen serves to the protagonist time to reflect on himself and the responsibility he has in protecting the world against high-tech diseases.
...
Plus, the very unusual but gorgeous chemistry between Tony Stark and his secretary/companion Pepper Potts is another striking feature which is not considered at all was. When Kevin Feige, the current president of Marvel Studios, was asked about his desition about casting Gwyneth Paltrow he confessed the following: "Gwyneth is the embodiment of a leading lady. She brings intelligence, poise and an incredible range of talent to this role". Throughout the movie, these two characters happened to be facing their professional and sentimental relationship naturally owing to the Iron Man. The way Pepper Potts clings on to the fact that his beloved boss is in troublesome scenarios, it's just pure tenderness and shows how much potential this couple has.
...
The cast assuredly introduced not only convincing performances but strong characters which will be handy for the following Marvel instalments, just watching Jeff Bridges as the badass Iron Monger is superb! The film producer nailed it! If someone asked me about the flaws it has presented, probably I would say the dark tone, some petit explicit scenes (bearing in mind there are children as spectators) and the lack of sense of humour at times. Still, it is mostly pure perfection.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had no interest in superhero movies until the release of Avengers: Infinity War. I had decided to watch all the MCU movies so that I could catch up before Endgame releases. This was the very first one in the list and also the very reason why I stuck on this franchise, because I knew that if the very first movie had so much to offer, I'd really be in for some good time with all these movies. And since this movie attempted to do something new (that I'll talk about later), Tony Stark already became my favourite MCU character.

First of all, the acting in this movie is superb. I've heard people say that Robert Downey Jr's acting is quite mediocre, but here I felt as though it was terrific. He actually feels like he's the character. If he wanted he didn't have to do the finger snapping thing while waiting for Jarvis to download the data for the suit upgrades, he didn't have to sound nonchalant every time something great happened and he didn't even have to make those quirky one liners in every scene. But he still did all of that. And with just that personality combined with character development he managed to completely steal the show.

Alongside the acting another thing that made this movie great is the idea. Until now we used to see superheroes to be like "I have to keep my identity a secret UwU". But this is finally the movie where the superhero comes in front of the press and says "I'm Iron Man!". Also the superheroes are shown to have very high morals who can never be wrong and inspire other people to be like them. You will never expect them to be self centred and care-free. Of course nowadays this is rapidly becoming an idea of showing superheroes to be morally corrupt, but this isn't what this movie is saying. It's just a man with a super suit who fights bad people entirely out of his own choice without any concern of what others say.

The CGI and cinematography is another thing that makes this movie so great. If you just see the plot, what is there? A man gets attacked by terrorists, he builds a suit to save himself, he upgrades it and becomes the superhero, the bad guy who wants to take over the world finds out his old suit, hero-villain fight, hero wins, roll credits. Most of this was shown in the trailer itself. But what mainly carries it is the visual appeal and tone, something that MCU movies are still replicating (Captain Marvel smh). It is fun to see Iron Man just do something on the big screen. It's so visually satisfying to see him failing the designs and trying to fix them. Even the scene in which Stane pulls Iron Man's Arc Reactor was scary, but fun to watch.

But of course this movie isn't without its fair share of flaws. For starters the movie seems to be taken way too lightly. Iron Man kills all those terrorists but faces no consequences. Iron Man flies among US Army but faces no consequences (sure he does reveal he's Iron Man in the end but before that it's very little). The movie also spends time showing Tony's life before and after being Iron Man that it just seems like padding the runtime, although the padding makes the movie somewhat comfortable to watch. Like I mentioned above, this movie severely lacks content. Pepper learning about Stane being the villain was also a very "Oh no! Anyway..." type reveal.

Iron Man is a perfect origin story that is satisfying to watch and also something fun. It's a good thing that this is the first movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, since there are many movie franchises where the first movie itself is bad (The Fast and the Furious, Transformers, Fantastic Four, Mortal Kombat etc). I'm glad I made this decision. Back when I saw this movie, Iron Man had become my favourite superhero. I used to talk and act like Tony Stark, that's the impact it left on me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The Iron Man perfectly suits the superhero movie genre; especially if you're under fourteen years of age. The movie lacks a truly formidable foe to push the Iron Man's buttons and force him to prove his mettle (I blame Favreau). The casting/acting is top shelf, but too much of it is wasted on exposition (not to mention a lack of any real chemistry between Downey and Paltrow). Favreau's direction is mostly plodding and unsure of itself - antithetical to the movie's protagonist. By all means go see it, but let's hope Marvel picks a better director for the sequel. Expand

Do the words secret identity mean anything in this movie? It was pretty good but could have been much better if they had taken the time to tell us how Tony Stark became a hapless playboy. At least with Bruce Wayne we knew his was a facade.

It is a taught, funny, and yes, sometimes even emotionally involving story of an unexpected hero's rise to power and a story of how to forget the past and muscle up. Until the end. Downey Jr.'s great, Paltrow's great and it's a hell of a lot of fun to watch Jeff Bridges (who will always be The Dude to me) just stand around and chew up the scenery. As i mention twice before, the ending's a mess. It's a cop out by director Favreau to resort into the geeky much weary Transformers territory and brought me completely out of the film (at least until the delivery of Downey Jr.'s last line), pulling the whole cast from 4 star territory down to 3 and a half star averageness, making me decide if the film deserves credit for the ending's iffishness, or the almost great parts in the middle and beginning parts. Going back and being reminded of the first 2 hours or so, though, I would have to go with the latter. Expand

I'm not used to the form and structure of superhero movies, so it took me a while to clue in that because it's an origin story, Iron Man wouldn't reach his full form until late in the film. I was also super surprised to see that Iron Man is fighting terrorists--I was not expecting that, although after I thought about it for a while I realized that it's a natural way to update superhero plots to reflect modern American concerns.

In any case, the movie had a lively and engaging plot, and of course, Robert Downey Jr. was amazing. His smarmy one-liners and his impatience for everyone and everything are hilarious, and he somehow manages to remain charming despite being a huge jerk to everyone. His odd relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts is a good humanizing factor in the movie, as it's clear from their first interactions that he values her more than he's willing to let on. It was neat to see the seeds being planted for the sequels, and of course the film's surprising end-note was as fun as it was frustrating.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Generic but enjoyable.

Iron Man is the first film of what is now widely known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is action-packed, humorous but solidified the aspects of what would quickly be framed as the "generic comic-book film" - with an antagonist that parallels the main protagonist, but is significantly less interesting and developed, a three act structure that ends with a big CGI battle, comedy inserted into inappropriate moments, and a surface level commentary of society, and a lack of any real diversity.

Tony Stark is the best part of the film, all thanks to Robert Downey Junior's insatiable charisma, thus in spite of Tony being a largely unlikeable character, Robert's ooze of charm makes it difficult not to like him.

I was extremely disappointed by the ending. Does anyone remember the days when a superhero's identity was a secret? Now, of course, the world is populated by people whose every waking moment is posted online to all and sundry. Thus, they despise secrets.

Superhero movies all must, positively, out of necessity have a secondary character who is aware of the hero's real identity. For this reason I gave it a lower score. Otherwise, entertaining.
