Superhero films were becoming more and more popular thanks to the Spider-Man trilogy, and Iron Man built a new franchise of superhero films that fans still love 10 years later. 'Iron Man' is about a billionaire named Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) who runs Stark Industries, a weapons manufacturing company, and finds himself kidnapped in a cave by terrorists while giving a weapons demonstration in Afghanistan. With the help of new friend/mentor Yinsen (Shaun Toub), Tony builds a flying weaponized suit to escape the cave and become the superhero known as Iron Man. Tony's goal is to rid his company of weapons after seeing how the terrorists used them.

Robert Downey Jr. does an outstanding job as the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist and his alter ego. This is one of the perfect Hollywood/superhero film castings of all time. Robert Downey Jr. was born to play Iron Man. Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a great side character/love interest to Tony Stark, and it's great to see a superhero film build up to romance instead of forcing it. There are very few examples of this, and it helps the pacing of the film(s). Terrence Howard is fine as Rhodey, but it's clear why he was recasted. Shaun Toub is great as Yinsen, and I really hope that there is some callback to his character in 'Avengers: Infinity War' this year or 'Avengers 4' next year. Jeff Bridges is phenomenal as the villain Obadiah Stane, a.k.a., Iron Monger. He was easily the best villain in the Iron Man franchise and was very memorable. Obadiah's evil plan is simple. He doesn't like the fact that Tony Stark has taken his job and tries to rid him from the company by any means necessary. It's not very cliche, and it's adapted well in the film. Being someone who isn't familiar with the comics, Iron Man was a great origin story film for those who didn't know it previously.

The script is very well written. Tony Stark's dialogue is hilarious yet serious. There are specific scenes where the dialogue stands out, but I won't mention them to avoid spoilers. (But who hasn't seen this by now?)

The action and visual effects are great in this film, and it's great seeing Iron Man suit up and fly. It's fun to watch. It's very believable, too. You actually think you're watching Iron Man fly.

As for the score, it's a great start to the MCU, and it's badass, but I don't think it defines Iron Man like the Iron Man 3 score does. This score is moderate and more intense while Iron Man 3's score is fast-paced, emotional, and intense.

The costume design in this film is amazing. Iron Man's suits look way better in film than in comics or cartoons. The Mark I suit was a great callback to Iron Man's first appearance in the comics while the other suit designs were great, too. Mark III was a great choice for Iron Man's main suit in the film and arguably most memorable.

While I think the pacing in this film was good, I felt the cave scenes were just a little too long. I know they were trying to establish that he was in there for a while, but it seemed like it took a while before Tony even learned Yinsen's name. It's established that he was in there for 3 months, which I guess is believable, but you don't see Tony dealing with the aftermath. Iron Man 3 dealt with this better with the PTSD storyline. Tony seems to be just fine after spending 3 months in a cave. Other than that, this movie is amazing.

The characterization of Tony Stark as Iron Man is wonderfully done and his growth and development as a character was really well done. Robert Downy Jr. was amazing along with the rest of the cast. The honest characters moments and brief exchanges make the movie feel real and the characters are written so honestly. The romance is well done, the humor, however the motivations of the villain get muddled later in the film. The action scenes are rare which makes the pacing way better and leaves more room for the story and characters but also makes the action scenes super rewarding. They are very entertaining and fun to watch. Its a superb film and it was nearly perfect and will be remembered as a classic. Expand

My first taste of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A great start!

I absolutely enjoyed seeing 'Iron Man'. Robert Downey Jr. is terrific as the titular character, who is a blast to watch throughout - love the design! The plot is very entertaining, I like how it tells the story; simply, but very effectively. Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, meanwhile, all add to the film with good performances.

The special effects are very neat, as are all the action sequences. I will say the score isn't the strongest, at least in terms of what I'd expect from this sorta film. I wouldn't say it's bad per se, just not as spectacular as it could've (should've?) been; especially with someone like Ramin Djawadi composing. I love a film with great music, so hopefully that improves as I watch the MCU expand.

I know, I'm extremely late to this particularly party but happy to finally begin watching.

Obviously, Robert Downey Jr. is an amazing Iron Man. He is basically THE Tony Start/Iron Man. I can't imagine anyone else playing him.

His character has an arc. At first he doesn't really care what impact his weapons have on the world, but then he realizes that what he was doing was wrong, and he tries to change things. I liked that. I was afraid he was going to be a rich, arrogant **** you can't relate to the entire movie, but thankfully that's not the case.

This movie was a good way of starting the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The first MCU film. Period.
Honestly, we always think that the past is better than the present. And, hell yeah, it works for “Iron Man”. Almost. What exactly keeps it working? Firstly, Jon Favreau & his crew’s groundbreaking achievements in a strong storytelling perspective for Tony’s character arc: Tony is the heart of the film and he proves it every single second. Secondly, incredibly well-cast actors: Robert Downey Jr. perfectly captured the nature of Tony, his charisma delivers everything you need from the character. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges & Terrence Howard (and Jon Favreau, of course) are all in the same perfect zone. We could get more of them but that’s how the story built. Thirdly, the atmosphere and music never let you get out of the MCU world. Maybe one or two times the VFX were a bit off, but sometimes visuals are better than in many newest blockbusters. 9/10. The best MCU start it could’ve ever had.

This movie is great origin story. It is maybe my favorite Marvel movie. I love Iron Man and this movie. These are all good things:
1. All characters are great and memorable. You know every character has personality and we are emotionally connected with main characters. Tony is best character in this movie and probably the best character in hole MCU. Tony is villain in the beginning and his arc in this movie is **** great. For me, he is better then Steve, because he actually changed and Tony actually has an arc.
2. Plot is the best!!! It is connected with his arc in the best way. I like how Green Lantern is trying to copy this movie, but main character does not have any goals. It is funny because Tonys goals when he gets back from cave is press conference and cheese burger. It is really compelling and fun.
3. Villain is really good. I know that everyone thinks this movies villain is just CGI monster, but he is really good. Obadiah is Tonys idol and he looks up to him, but he changes in cave. When he gets out of cave he decides to stop selling weapons. He made just one and it is Iron Man, but only he knows how to use it. Obadiah is really jealous and nearly kills Tony just to get Iron Man. And when he made his suit and Tony confronted him he was weapon that he could become. It is great, but Obadiahs massacre in final battle is not great. I give it 9/10.

P.S. Music is the best of the greatly very good best. And music is only reason why second movie is 6/10.

His understated performance In terms of acting chops and believability, Robert Downey Jr. is head and shoulders above the leading actors from all other "superhero" movies, with the possible exception of Christian Bale from "Batman Begins". His understated performance drives the film, and his chemistry with Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard is superb. What I appreciate most about the story is that Tony Stark doesn't gain any supernatural abilities in this film by getting bitten by a Spider, or getting mixed up in a chemical spill, etc. He uses his own skills as an engineer, mechanic, weapons developer (and his own brain power) to get himself out of a tough situation, and to then evolve as a human being by cleaning up his playboy act and using his skills for good. The technological aspects of the story, including the evolution of his suit through several iterations, are extremely interesting. And I especially the fact that the back story is well-developed, and the writers/director didn't spend so much of the movie on the final "fight" scene, which usually makes a movie of this type boring and trite. But when I heard there was a movie about it, starring Robert Downey Jr, I got interested. I love Mr. Downey as an actor. He is funny, but plays a good serious role too. He is an all around good actor. So it's no wonder I wanted to see the movie. It took me a while to see it though. I saw it 3 years after it came out, and boy it was good. Robert Downey Jr. shows his talent again as a narcissistic weapons developer, called Tony Stark. He gets kidnapped and forced to make a weapon, but he manages to escape. But after he had gotten grenade shrapnel in his heart, he have to use a machine to be kept alive. He uses different materials to make a new battery. The means of escape is performed by making a suit of metal and thus being able to (somehow) deflect bullets and fly with a jet pack the size of a calf or something (against the laws of physics at least). When he gets back he decides to close the weapons factory and starts developing a suit with the metal suit as a base idea. That is the Iron man suit. He starts to clear out areas of terrorists in the middle east and starts to stop wars and **** This causes people to want the suit, including the main villain. It's a wonderful twist that keeps me entertained instead of annoyed. I love superhero movies that tells a story different from the comics. This one is noticeable different from what a comic would do. It's filmic, not comiccy. I love the choice of Robert Downy Jr. as Tony Stark, he just performs it perfectly. Everything is so good, the action, the humour, the acting, the effects, everything. I recommend it to everyone, Superhero fan or not. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Iron Man doesn't live up to it's amzing critical claim, but it's still a great film. It contains a lot of silly action which has within it cheesy lines, like: 'My turn.' this was said when Tony was about to burn a batallion of eney soldiers, this scene took place right after the death of Tony's friend/companion, and strangely enough, Tony didn't seem at all sad or effected by the sudden death of his counterpart. The story develops well and the characters gradually reveal their feelings and get you to know them (this is characterization). The finale of the film was exciting and gripping, but it ended suddenly with a nice cliff-hanger(y) line (this almost made up for it).

Iron Man is a flawed, yet enjoyable and gripping with it's exciting action sequences and story developement. So I give this film a... 78/100!

This one is easily an intense action-packed Marvel hit. I really loved this movie. It's not only a great superhero movie, but it's how every first of a potentially successful trilogy should be. Fresh, fun and exciting. As far as the storyline goes, the dark beginning is what sells for the rest of the movie. Once it gets out that dark mood of the story, (Tony making suits for the "terrorists"), the story tends to loose its feel. Yet, once Tony has made the "main" suit and starts flying around and testing it, that's where the fun part of the story kicks in which surprisingly worked pretty well. By the end when the plot starts to thicken, that's where it not only goes back to being dark, but also has the fun and excitement along with it. The characters, except for Tony, are about average and don't really bring much to the story. But with Tony's wittiness, it tends to help save the movie and go back to the fun and excitement. Overall, it's a fresh start to this potential trilogy. Expand

It had the perfectI'm just going to go out and say it, Iron Man is a masterpiece. This movie as well as The Dark Knight have pushed new boundaries in the average comic book movie and influenced many more comic book movies to come. It had the perfect combination of comedic relief and serious subject matter that you never doubted its superiority. Now, let's get into the love session.
Iron Man has a quality that not a lot of comic book movies have, it has the quality of separating it's genres. This meaning that it's comedic and dramatic timing was very good. It was funny when it needed to be and it was serious when it needed to be, nothing overlapped. Unlike in a lot of other Superhero movies where the comedic relief was right in the middle of an action sequence and you just roll your eyes (this will actually come into play in the next two installments). This movie had none of that and it's mostly thanks to the great script.
This movie really did path the way for many comic book films top come and it did a good amount of this with it's action sequences. They were great! They way they looked, the way they were shot, the look of everything was so cool. Jon Favreau does a fantastic job with this movie. The scene when Iron Man goes and kills the terrorists by using this lock on device and swiftly kills the terrorists without harming a single civilian which they are holding hostage. Then when you think it's done, it's not because the terrorists use a tank to shoot at him and he easily dodges their first attempt and then blows it up and walks away slowly as it is destroyed. Mesmerizing is all I can say.
This movie had a ton of tension too. It was riveting and it really made you feel for the characters and relate to them thanks to the dramatic depth that it preserved. Like The Dark Knight, this wasn't all about the hero battling off bad guys. It's about the character within the suit, Tony Stark. Tony Stark is an interesting character and Robert Downey Jr. does a phenomenal job as him (the role he was born to play). Tony Stark is an extremely wealthy arms dealer who is completely reliant on war to keep his wealth and stay on top. He is extremely self centered and inconsiderate until he is captured by a group of terrorists and that's when he goes through his change. He then quits arms dealing and uses Stark industries for a better cause. This is when he becomes Iron Man. Although this man is as wealthy as one can get and he is a Superhero, he is strangely relatable. The script does such a good job of utilizing his human side that you can relate to a character that you will probably never be. This is also thanks to the dramatic depth in the story and the hidden meaning behind the suit.
Iron Man is a movie that just won't quit. This is a classic that will surely be remembered for years to come. It has influenced many other films and has spawned two sequels since its release in 2008 that sadly didn't even come close to this movie. In my mind I feel that this is a masterpiece that deserves everything that it has become. Unique and undeniably awesome, Iron Man is the gold standard for comic book, and action movies all together.

That's an awful lot of exposition for any one film to handle. Jon Favreau's Iron Man wrestles with those responsibilities as well as a relatively unique conundrum: How do you make audiences care about a character whose face is hidden under a metallic scowl? The Iron Man filmmakers' answer is to cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role and keep him out of the Iron Man suit for as long as possible.

Downey stars as dashing billionaire playboy Tony Stark—part Howard Hughes, part Errol Flynn—who leads a life unencumbered by reflection until he's captured and held hostage in Afghanistan by terrorists using his company's weapons. Downey escapes by building a crude version of his Iron Man suit. Upon returning home, Downey perfects the robotic flying suit, but when he announces that his company is getting out of the weapons business he makes himself an inviting target to rivals, including enigmatic father figure Jeff Bridges, who looks disconcertingly like Winter Kills co-star Sterling Hayden with his shaved head and mad-prophet beard.

Iron Man takes its sweet time getting Downey into the Iron Man suit, and it doles out big action setpieces sparingly once man has fused triumphantly with machine. Downey is so much fun as a breezy cad that it's a shame he spends so much time brooding and luxuriating in obsession. Like Ang Lee's Hulk, Iron Man is a comic-book blockbuster characterized as much by heavyweight acting and sober intellectual concerns about the use and misuse of power and technology as the usual comic-book foolishness. But Iron Man finds a much more palatable, audience-friendly balance between delirious spectacle and tortured introspection thanks largely to Downey, a great actor who's also a great entertainer. His relationship with a fire-extinguishing robot is funnier and more poignant than the central relationship between humans in most movies, and there's nothing arbitrary about love interest/long-suffering assistant Gwyneth Paltrow. Having gotten all that exposition out of the way in a brisk and entertaining fashion, Favreau paves the way for more pure fun and excitement in future entries. Iron Man is the rare comic-book movie that makes the prospect of a sequel seem like a promise instead of a threat. Like The Dark Knight, Iron Man doesn't fell like the normal superhero film it has more depth and feeling to it and it works really well!
