In view of the urgency to feed the world and the inability of Earth to be able to generate more food, NASA secretly creates a program to find more habitable planets in order to save some humans. After a mysterious event at his home, former astronaut Cooper discovers these project and is recruited, despite the opposition of his daughter Murph, having to lead an interstellar spaceship in a voyage to investigate three planets only accessible through a “wormhole” next to Saturn.

This is a really worth seeing film, despite its script being made of hits and misses and has many confusing situations, which only seem to be within the comprehension of those who have a PhD in Astrophysics. Much more than a sci-fi film, it's a true drama. One of the things that most caught my attention, and that contributes to the dramatic load, was the way that each character has to sacrifice personal interests in favor of a bigger cause, and to decide between what they want and what needs to be done to take the mission forward. This gives the film an emotional charge that is not very usual in sci-fi and that was even exaggerated. I can give an example of those exchanges of messages between the ship and our planet, which, despite being useful in the task of making the characters more human and pleasant, are overly melodramatic. Also the dialogues sound artificial, melodramatic and cliché sometimes. Another feature that pleased me was the concern with scientific rigor, whenever possible (congratulations, Dr. Kip Thorne). However, even here there are shortcomings, with poorly explained space-time advances and setbacks and an extremely confusing ending. And, of course, there are flaws that are already common in cinema, such as the providential way in which the protagonist will “stumble” on a secret space project that he should not have known and become the right man for the thing. There are hundreds of movies with similar flaws.

The cast is led by Matthew McConaughey, who had won an Oscar before and shows all his charisma and plays wonderfully, particularly the young MacKenzie Foy, very sweet in her role. Anne Hathaway also shone and did well in her role. Equally flawless were Michael Caine, David Gyasi and, particularly, Jessica Chastain. Ellen Burstyn also had time for an interesting and honorable cameo. I didn't like Matt Damon's work, I think his character is one-dimensional and very uninteresting. And I don't understand what the hell Casey Affleck is doing in this film.

But who really deserves applause is director/screenwriter Chris Nolan, by the ambitious way in which he planned the film and the determination and commitment he put into it. There is no doubt that he knew how to get the best out of the cast and, despite not having made a perfect script, he created an appealing story that does not put science aside to enter into creative daydreams and delusions. The film is long, the pace is slow and this is not always justified, with the film spending a lot of time on lengthy scenes and sequences, almost without an audible sound. Despite this, it's one of the most visually extraordinary films I have seen recently. Cinematography takes advantage of the best of CGI technology and creates realistic space scenes, which have been expertly complemented by real settings and traditional special effects, which Nolan masterfully uses. In addition to all this, we have excellent sound effects, editing, and Hans Zimmer's extraordinary soundtrack, perhaps one of the best that he has ever created, with a deep and rich sound.

Consider this quote:

"Though I speak with the tongue of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand... all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing."
This is part of a quote from the 1966 Russian classic Andrei Rublev, which is my favourite film from legendary filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. In this moment we hear our protagonist performing a sermon of sorts, about the significance of love, and how life is meaningless without it. In this scene we see the camera shift in and out, from Anatoly Solonitsyn‘s consistently phenomenal acting, to the beautiful imagery of snow falling near the church. Andrei has previously had an encounter which has caused him to ponder over what it means to love, and this moment is nothing more than a projection of his newfound occupation. Notice how Tarkovsky effortlessly hints to poignant themes in his films? Whilst some of these ideas may be far less subtle (such as the Stalker’s outlook on faith in Stalker), in just one beautiful moment, he lays out his ideas in ways that are both meaningful, impactful, and don’t require compromise from the narrative. Now take this quote from Interstellar:

"Love is the one thing we’re capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space. Maybe we should trust that, even if we can't understand it."
At this point in the film, the crew is deciding on which of the two potential planets is the most likely to result in success, and Anne Hathaway’s character, is trying to convince them that the second option is better. Her partner is on that planet, and she holds the belief that, just because he is most likely dead, yet she still feels compelled to go there (because of love), then that is significant justification for them to risk the entire fate of humanity. Naturally the other two character’s dismiss her, deciding instead to go to Professor Mann’s planet, and what ensues is an entire section of the film which serves no purpose other than to prove that; "love was the right choice. You guys chose wrong you idiots". My point is, if Nolan is so desperate to convey that the main theme is love, surely there were better ways to go about doing so? These quotes feel like they were ripped straight out of a Terence Malick film, but without the powerful imagery to convey these points. Nolan is making a sci-fi epic, and at that he excels, however for whatever reason he is torn between the decision to focus on the sci-fi elements and the main theme of love, and in trying to connect them his narrative has only suffered. In his attempt to make this theme as clear as possible, Nolan sacrifices a significant portion of his dialogue. On top of receiving endless amounts of exposition that explain the nuances of the many different scientific aspects, we have this idea shoved down our throats in the form of even more exposition, and an entire section of the film. Furthermore, at many points of key dialogue, Hans Zimmer’s brilliant but deafening score continuously escalates. This, combined with cooper’s muffled voice, the forced idea that love is the only true power in the universe, and Nolan’s infamously bad sound mixing, all result in me personally losing all interest and my sense of immersion. I suppose there are others who enjoy this, and to them I ask; do you think interstellar would be a better or worse film if Nolan didn’t attempt to experiment with themes? I personally wish that he had chosen to focus on what he does best, but in the end it is all subjective.
The film isn’t all bad. I especially love the whole 'waves' subplot. Zimmer’s ticking score can be heard every time a year of Earth’s time goes by, which adds to the suspense felt by your subconscious. As everyone will already know., the visuals are extremely impressive, and do wonders for the spectacle Nolan is attempting to achieve. The following scene where Cooper has to watch his children grow old is heartbreaking and brilliant, and by far my favourite moment in the movie. In fact, the performances from McConaughey and Chastain are both great, and are part of what carries the film to as high a score as I’m willing to give.

I can't say anything because there's no word that can explain the gloriousness of this movie.
This movie will never forget, directing was great, screenplay was great, actors did a great acting, music was great, a great movie, I can't write any review because no reviews can explain it, thank you Nolan you gave a great gift to the world, and your movie will be watched someday (I don't know when) in the INTRESTELLAR SPACE.

The facts behind it made it awesome in my opinion. This movie is a masterpiece that show us in a very genius way how Nolan can properly tell a story that not many can, with the superb and fascinating performance of Matthew McConaughey. This is a very amazing combination of director and protagonist. And when it comes to the movie... it is amazing how this is telling us what the human race can do to survive, how we like to constantly prove we are not wrong, when we really are. This is a reminder that the Planet Earth is our home, not just a planet. Expand

Nora 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am really not a fan of this movie.

The visuals are great and I'm sure the science is very accurate and that's very impressive... but the writing is total mess.

I never liked how Cooper completely ignores his son Tom, who he clearly loves less than Murph. I never liked Brand's awful monolgue about love. I get that she's supposed to be wrong and irrational and over-emotional in this scene (isn't she supposed to be a scientist?), but she's proven right in the end, which just sucks for so many reasons. I mean, they seriously made the only female scientist on board be the one that almost jeopardizes the mission because she gets emotional and misses her boyfriend. Yikes.

I never liked dialogue. I've always had a problem with how Nolan movies are written. Full of endless exposition and corny speeches that are meant to be deep, and this is no different.

The following is an actual conversatiom from the movie:

-------------------------------------------------------------
COOPER: All of this, is one little girl's bedroom, every moment! It's infinitely complex! They have access, to infinite time and space, but they're not bound by anything! They can't find a specific place in time, they can't communicate. That's why I'm here. I'm gonna find a way to tell Murph, just like I found this moment.

TARS: How, Cooper?

COOPER: Love, TARS, love.
-------------------------------------------------------------

This movie wants to be 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it feels like Nolan didn't trust the audience to be smart enough to understand the film like Kubrick did, so instead of conveying its themes and science visually like 2001, he makes the characters constantly explain the science to the audience and give long speeches about whatever he's trying to say. It's like he thinks we're babies or something.

I like most Nolan films, but this just feels like he didn't respect the viewer's intelligence enough, and it turns what could have been a poetic space epic into a bunch of boring characters telling us what's going on at all times.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nolan once again provides a truly engaging spectacle, and yet I can't help but feel that the film is outdone by the Universe itself. The cinematography is beautiful - as you would expect - and the score from Hans Zimmer for the most part helps to really build the tension when needed, as well as help enhance the relations between characters when needed too. The finale is beautifully crafted, and Mackenzie Foy brings the strongest performance from a child actor ever seen on film. Sadly, the beginning drags for too long, Matt Damon's character is largely a disappointment dragged in to try and add some conflict, and the 'love' theme of the film is completely jarring. Unlike the majority, I also did not find the waves scene at all engaging or enjoyable; this is offset by the beautifully done docking scene however. An overall enjoyable film that doesn't quite reach the bar set by Inception before it. Expand

This movie isn't a fast-paced movie at all, which for some movies can be the biggest downfall. But, this film had me engaged and in awe for the entire 169 minutes, with it's engaging and thought-provoking story, spectacular special effects and poignant themes of our humanity and reasons of being. The acting all around is phenomenal, dare I say that this is McConaughey's best performance to date. And, let it not be said that Hans Zimmer's score is bad, because it is euphoric as always. This movie should have been nominated for Best Picture. Expand

These things just don't mix and the obligatory inclusion of a family story that's not really done with any conviction, spoils the entire drama and dynamic of the film. It's just like when they have the kid in Terminator 2 having fun with the Terminator. No, no, no! Jumped the shark right there with a cutesy family angle. Stupid! And the same kind of thing spoils this film.

Also, the adventure isn't very interesting either, and I can't even remember much about it now, that's how dull it was. One problem is that Hollywood needs to realize that BLACK HOLES ARE OVER -- they aren't interesting or cool anymore. That was the 70s, guys. Let's move on to other topics, please.

Maybe Nolan misfired it, still potentially, the film reaches to places where our usual space opera doesn't.

Interstellar

Nolan's long lasting project to explore the space goes safe. That's as much as you can do, for a film so heavy and personally touched. The writer and director Christopher Nolan is a believer of doing your homework properly. Simple as that. And working with Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, he has embodied the actual laws of physics in the film to a certain degree that it, itself started to create storylines of its own. Deciding to go towards the call, Nolan jam-packs this three hour of film with a whole lot of science and maths.

And just as it happened previously in Inception- not in this scale, of course- the science took over the emotional impact of these incredibly empathetic characters. Now, the only reason why this one comes off a bit slow in that department, compared to the Inception, is because it over-explains the narrative arcs more than the theories and philosophies of this science expenditure. Just walk through the jolting revelation placed later in the film, which spirals out an informative; yet not actually informative, conversation between Mathew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon discussing Michael Caine's character.

Once again, these are just minor flaws in this touching love story, where my personal favorite aspect of it is how mythological the equation between a father and a daughter comes off, especially in the final moments of the film. That very piece of note resembles beautifully with Steven Spielberg's AI: Artificial Intelligence. Another thing to note here, is how simple Nolan's direction and choices in the film are. In a complex dystopian future, he has kept things elemental- for instance the planets are often painted as one key, like water, rocks, dust and even love(!)- in order to mark the events occurred in this long Interstellar travel clearly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is intense, gripping, emotional, and thought provoking. It has a few missteps; the talk of love, the last act needing multiple rewatches and even a little suspension of disbelief to make sense, and some of the exposition-heavy dialogue. Other than that, this movie has very few flaws. The cinematography sits atop the mountain with the very best that this genre can offer. There are almost no moments where special effects are even noticeable; it all looks real. That aside, this is a monumental achievement in film making. From getting some incredibly complicated concepts almost entirely correct to taking liberties and being ambitious enough to make Kubrick proud, this movie is simply outstanding. Still one of my favorites, despite being one of the films I have most intensely examined and criticized in recent years. If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor and watch this film. Expand

Despite the movie itself, there was one thing about movie that made to score 4 to it and it was its soundtrack, Nolan should be grateful of Hans Zimmer for that. Another bad point of interstellar that have made it very boring to us was its running time: 169 mins! and again nothing happens.Beside that, this movie had no colors. just some blue-white color in Desmond and Mann's planets and a shut space into the spaceship. I'm still wondering why lot of people like that and give it 10,. Maybe because they think that just blew their mind but they don't even try to figure it out. VERY DISAPPOINTING AT ALL. Expand

It also contains a bunch of scientifically looking inserts which makes it to appear more hm... solid, truthfully looking, you know... The truth is "I don't buy it" was the phrase I constantly repeated while watching this movie. While each scientific ground is true in separate, together they form a frankenstein. Fuel consumption in the time-slowing gravitation field of Gargantua (it is horrible, guys, horrible, unless you use gravitational engine with galactium as a fuel:); the ability to perform a kryo flight and the inability to maintain hydroponics... or to extract oxygen from the environment (for those, who forgot or never knew, oxygen accounts to 49% of it by mass) In general: clumsy solutions to the invented problems. I don't buy it.

I would not mention scientific and common logic as an argument at all, but without it the movie is just boring. If you do a melodrama, don't fill the movie with the science. If you do a scientific apocalypse, make sure it looks plausible in the whole, not just in parts.

The only plus of this movie: it is well made in visual forms and actions. Only because of that respect to the amount of work done it is 6/10
