Inside Out is their best release since Toy Story 3 and returns to the kinds of stories they do best. It tugs emotionally almost as much as TS 3 and Up! but not quite as much, which is the only reason I do not take the rating all the way to 10.

Inside Out is definitely among the upper echelon of great Pixar films. There is sequel potential, but I honestly would love it if they would leave this one to stand alone. But that is not Pixar's way usually. One can hope, though.

A departure from many Pixar offerings is there is no true villain. The tension is all created by the situations created within the fabric of the plot. And there are plenty of tense moments, along with several heartfelt moments that will pull tears from some viewers. As with nearly all Pixar movies, there is plenty here to keep younger audiences entertained while providing depth and emotion for the adult viewers, especially anyone who is a parent.

Here we go again, another Pixar movie that relies on over the top archetypes instead of characters and has no originality whatsoever. This should be fun.

You know I grew up with Pixar back in the late 1990’s and let me tell you the kid in me wants to like them but the objective critic in me can’t stand them. The last film they made that I thoroughly enjoyed was Up and that came out back in 2009. They’re like Activision and Call of Duty now, it’s the same thing every time.

Also If you check their wikipedia page then You will see that they haven’t got anything new planned for the next 3 years. Finding Dory, Toy Story 4, Cars 3. (Wasn't the second one bad enough.)

Why not give their franchises to another animation studio to make an animated series based on these movies like Buzz lightyear of star command instead of constantly going back to the the things that we’ve all seen before. Don’t get me wrong as long as the movie is good that’s all that matters in the end. Even though Call Of Duty is the same game every year at least it’s fun. (Though Ghosts was a big disappointment)

But it seems like Pixar is trying too hard to attract a crowd of new kids without even thinking about the kids that loved them back in the 90’s. I mean Toy Story 3 was essentially Toy Story 2 again just in a different coat.

Open up the movie with a large scale action sequence that is later revealed to be a figment of someone’s imagination, introduce the idea that toys don’t last forever, There is a misunderstanding in which the toy(s) are mistakenly put in a position where the unwanted toys are supposed to be, The toys get placed in new environments meeting new characters, one of them being a jolly plump toy who wields a cane. this toy is later revealed to be an antagonist fueled by the traumatization of being abandoned by their former owner taking his anger out on others, The seemingly good hearted toy convinces the other toys to stay with promises of being loved for generations, A delusional factory setting Buzz lightyear locks up the Protagonist(s) , the protagonists enter a large scale industrial contraption where the antagonists is disposed of and left in the care of another person. That is the plot for both Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3.

And now as if that wasn’t bad enough since Toy Story is so popular Pixar seems to think that all of their franchises should be like Toy Story. Lets take their new movie Inside Out for example. If I were to tell you that there was a Pixar character who all the other characters only exist to look out for their well being but at the same time they’re not aware of their sentience, the entire plot is affected by them moving to a different city, they also have to deal with growing up and leaving their childhood in the past, who am I talking about? I’m talking about Andy from Toy Story right? I’m also talking about Riley from Inside Out, because when you think about it they’re the exact same person.

Now if it were just the unoriginal characters I could over look this film. Unfortunately there are a lot of other things wrong with this movie. The main human character Riley doesn’t get anywhere near enough screen time. The whole movie revolves around what a person would be like if they were limited to the amount of emotions they had, but other than not getting along well with her parents we don’t get to see much of her personality. We don’t even get to know much about the people in her environment. There was one point in the film where she starts crying in class and is embarrassed that the cool kids saw her cry. I was thinking that this would make for some great social interaction but we never see them again. The movie isn’t a complete dud though, it shows that even negative emotions have their place and reason for being. It kind of reminded me about a game called Sonic Shuffle. At first everyone is angry at the antagonist Void for making people dream negative thoughts but at the end it is revealed that negative emotions give people strength and that people need to feel all sorts of emotions in order to truly experience all that life has to offer.

When all's said and done I can recommend this movie as a time waster, something for you to take your kids to. But If you are looking for something deep and meaningful then go watch something else. Overall Score 5/10

The casting, voice acting, characters, the plot was well done. Almost everything in the film was "Pitch Perfect"............ and yes I did just say that. On the other hand the movie was fantastic and even though their are no sequels planned this is a movie that is really worth watching.

I should probably start this review with mentioning that I did not get to see the original English version of Inside Out but a dubbed one rather. I don't know how that affects my experience of it but here we go.

I don't want to go into plot details as the trailers avoided all that so I'll just say that Inside Out is a movie about growing up and loss. The two things that always seem to go together.

This movie drove me to tears. And judging from the other reviews I was not the only one. Yet, as I drove home, and looked back I realised that the story wasn't that great. There was nothing particularly striking about it. So why was I so in love with it by the end credits? Why was it such a kick in the emotions? Some part of me fears it will not stand the test of time.

What will ultimately happen is that you will see Inside Out and it will either touch you deeply or it won't. For the second group I don't know what to say. I guess it is a movie that just needs to be seen for the experience that it is.

Overall it is a decent movie but incredibly slow paced. Pixar definitely makes better movies then Disney... there is always more meaning and depth. However something was missing. It ended up being a slow paced Alice in wonderland (where unneeded situations were added to make a story). It that was enjoyable but, to boring to watch a second time.

Just another road movie, this time set inside a frame story that just failed to reach me. The emotion characters are somewhere in-between worshiping and controlling a little girl who gets upset because.... her new house is dirty. A big victorian house in the most expensive city in the country. The whole movie I felt more empathy for the parents who tried to make the move comfortable for their daughter.
The whole emotions/memories world just failed to wow me. It seemed inconsistent, cheesy and reductive. Even when the worst happened and whole buildings crumbled, they just reappeared intact later on. The jokes were bland... the whole movie was.

The problems that both my wife I felt were that this movie never had a real message or theme. All the great Pixar movies had a theme and message that could be summed up in a single sentence. Unfortunately Inside Out doesn't. Amy Pohler as Joy is the exact same character she was on Parks and Req. Sadness was so annoying that I felt like anger early on.

I mean the whole theme of the movie is that a memory can be both joy and sorrow. Yawn. Finally, the relationship of the parents to the girl is very lacking. The parents "need" her to be supportive of the move and problems. She must show happiness and be supportive. Then in the end the parents finally realize that maybe the kid was sad about the move. Are parents that stupid?

There were some great parts. Loved showing other people's minds and their control centers. Too bad the movie couldn't have focused on this instead of the story it picked.

I have been a Pixar fan for years, even since my dad bought me Toy Story on VHS and me, him and my step-mother watched it in the living room on our projector. They had a good cast (minus Lewis Black. That guy just grates me), just to me it falls apart at it's story line and it's execution.

Where it falls apart for me is the characters and the lack of development they have. You just don't feel anything towards them, so you don't care for or feel any of the emotions that they are feeling. This disappointed me as with their previous film "Up", and they managed feel every range of emotion possible in the space of the first 10 minutes.

The other big problem I had with Inside Out was that the world that populate the feature with-in Riley's "psyche" were boring, bland, lifeless and unimaginative. When the 2 main characters are having navigate themselves through them, they just leave nothing memorable. To me, the worlds are literally dead and lifeless.

I have 2 positives, though they do not compare the 2 negatives I have already listed. The animation (unsurprisingly) is stunning and is the exact level you expect a Pixar animation to be at. Now to the most enjoyable part of the film in my opinion. The story revolves around the emotions residing inside of Riley's head and essentially revolves around her. The most enjoyable part of the film for me was where we showed the emotions inside the mother and fathers heads, and also during the credits scene you see inside quite a few other characters heads. It is pretty funny as well as very inventive. Shame that it is barely 5 minutes of the entire film.

I can see kids enjoying the film, but being a long standing Pixar film fan, I did not enjoy it in the slightest. I hope they do better on their next project.

The story is weak, nothing relevant happens and it's the same "journey to go back home" we saw in every Pixar movie. The jokes are 100 years old, you saw them before the first season of Bugs Bunny in the 40's. The premise is flawed, the movie is about a kid beginning depression to make other kids care about her, but that disease is never mentioned, the kids will never care about something they don't even know what is. The emotion of the movie is very "pushed", one of the characters pratically begs you to cry with her. The people who gave it the Oscar must not have watched it. Expand

This film pushed so many of my buttons on a personal level that it's belittling to rank it with the common-tongue descriptor of 'masterpiece'. Inside Out . . . moved me deeply . . . beyond examination. I . . . didn't merely cry during this film, though you could say that the three or four times when I sniffled and my eyes welled up with **** that I was crying then. That was when I was crying. However, I also wept, no, I SOBBED. I profusely balled by eyes out like a big weenie. And it was one of the most cathartic experiences of my life. Never before has a work of cinema emitted such wracking waves of pure, touching storytelling that conveys so much universal, human understanding. Just because I cried (ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS), I wouldn't label this a melancholic, downer of a movie. It finds the perfect balance of euphoric, jubilant happiness to offset the brewing, incessant sadness that comes with every moment of joy. It is the sad realization that the feeling of elation is fleet. It won't last. As much as we want to reminisce and relive our memories from early youth, the purest concentration of feeling we have, we grow older and are taken out of the comfort of the world we've become used to. Moving, losing friends, growing out of childish things like imaginary friends (Oh, Bing Bong, WHHYYYYY??!!), becoming distanced from your family and becoming more independent, all these things are essential to the unending departing nature of life. I think goodbyes are truly the most traumatic loss we can experience. Inside Out illustrates that visually in a way that is unprecedentedly effective and hard-hitting. It is also brilliantly scripted, hilarious, GORGEOUSLY ANIMATED, ingeniously concepted and executed with unwavering skill and focus.

This may be the best animated film I've ever seen. Don't miss the opportunity to see this MULTIPLE TIMES in theaters.

1. As usual, Disney paints out the "normal" person with a broad brush designed to appeal to the largest number of people, instead of giving the main character any sort of uniqueness or depth (which are "normal" in Real Life!). In comparison, Studio Ghibli's female characters are all very complex and different. You don't need to get the audience to identify with the character's every trait and thoughts. There is nothing interesting about Riley, she's clearly been constructed as the "mainstream kid", almost a blank slate, America's archetypical kid (white middle class, single child).

2. There is some lovely symbolism in the movie, but most of the story-telling that happens inside Riley's head appears completely unrelated to what is happening in Riley's reality. What does it mean that Joy and Sadness are lost in long-term memory? This is the central part of the movie, and it drags on and on, and most of its aspects don't seem to help Riley's character development.

3. Of all the core emotions they could have picked, why disgust? I mean, what about love, selfishness, or empathy? Disgust seems mostly irrelevant to the whole movie, and extending her role from protecting Riley from poisoning to social acceptance (make-up, dress etc.) is such a stretch that it makes no sense to me.

4. At the end of the movie, my 5-year-old son laughed his head off. I asked him what his favourite part was, and he said "The cat at the end! I want to watch this over and over again!". Getting into other characters' heads was the comic aspect of the movie, and the little they did (about 5 minutes altogether) was very well done and very, very funny. But keeping it to the trailer and the credits makes it look like the original ideas around the movie were discarded because they interrupted the very serious emotional tone that was supposed to drive it. There's something missing there in the pacing of humour, a missed opportunity.

Funny? Yes! Charming, oh yes! Too long? Indeed! Despite mixing an outdated psychology of emotions with contemporary concepts of mind, the biggest fault of Inside Out is overestimating its story as worth a full-length feature film. Half of the film is a round-around journey of the two main characters trying to return (without success) to their headquarters. After the fourth attempt, my daughter was like, “will the rest of the movie be like this?” When the plot solves, you feel relief it just ended, but don’t care anymore. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie has a depressing core message about the death of childhood and the loss of beautiful memories. The middle part is long and painful, with too few of the hilarious moments promised in the trailer. Parents as well as tweens and teens may find it emotionally wrenching. This was a missed opportunity to explore emotions and empathy, and the film instead portrays the "end" of childhood as the death of cherished memories of imaginary friends and silliness. The best parts appear in the trailer, the last 5 minutes, and the credits. Expand

What a brilliant idea I thought it was so awesome I watched the trailer several times and enjoyed every time. But the movie was a huge disappointment, it looks it is one of the movies with trailer is better than the movie itself. In the trailer all people got magic creatures called emotions in their brain, but in the movie only the main character does there is only one scene where you can see these "emotions" in the head of different people and you already seen it in the trailer. Mom and Dad characters are completely one dimensional. Even the girl looks like robot controlled by stupid crew. And why did they put in this popular psychology theory that loves to put labels on people but always no more than 4 please. I better to see how the emotions behave in different life situations than to follow how american sale manager "Joy" learns the hard way that analytic "Sorrow" also a person and could be useful sometimes. It wasn't entertaining in my books. It had too many convenient impossible road blocks tossed up as incidenting plot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I certainly don't think it's in kids best interest to be kept within a protective bubble and not exposed to the reality that there is suffering in life, I do think that the main principle of a "kids" animated movie should be to bring them happiness. When I brought my 6 year old daughter home my wife asked her how the film was and she just looked forward and didn't utter a word. At least warn the public that your kids are going to get a full dose of the reality blues if they go to see this film. On numerous occasions my 6 year old daughter asked me why all the characters are crying. Then it gets really awesome when the little emotion of "joy" character is down in the dark waste bin of memories with the main character's imaginary friend. She clutches the smoldering and dying memories of past happiness and sobs uncontrollably. But she does eventually make it out of this purgatory because imaginary friend sacrifices his life and slowly fades away dissolving before our eyes. But the kicker was when my kid looks at me and asks with troubled eyes what will happen when the last solid island of this girls thoughts (truth island has already died as she steals from her mother to run away from home, etc) "family island" will crumble and disappear. What are the writers sadists? To push the limits were they trying to see if they could make an Angela's ashes for little kids? I actually felt guilty taking my daughter to see this film. Expand

It has a great story, awesome humour and an incredible deep understanding about growing up and human emotions. Its the rare case were you can mix sad and matured themes with humour in a genuine way. The matured themes are growing up pains, a relocation to a new (unfamiliar) place and family troubles caused by it. The brilliant part is that you have a visualisation of the emotions in the head of each person working in a control centre. With Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust you have a great cast. Also the concept of memories, subconscious and ideas are well done. I am still amazed how so matured and sad themes mix with great humour in a way that non harms the other. I usually hate tragicomedies and while I think it is not one it leans in this direction. Like I said the humour works perfect. All jokes work and I am amazed about the creativity. I cant name not one other movie that took a concept and used it to this near perfection. Then there is the story. It is so relatable. The parts for growing up and moving to a new location are absolute true. If you experienced this too you will agree. All implications are natural and there is again no flaw. I cant say not much more about this without spoilers but you should know by this time that this is an awesome movie. Overall I am deeply impressed by this movie and I wish I had seen it as child because some thinks here would have helped me. This is the gold standard for creativity and a masterpiece for the ages. Definitely watch the scenes after the movie for a salvo of great jokes Expand

However, it is massively unjustly over-rated yet again by the idiot critics who sense any kind of intellectual endeavor that strives to entertain and exert high brow thought as an automatic rubber stamp highest rating, best review they can generate. Again, this is because they are all sheep who cannot make movies themselves and they love to champion ones that put their values on display and also challenge them as viewers since all they do is watch movies and it gets boring, especially with all the garbage.
To put this in perspective for the rest of us: While this movie is extremely clever and very sharp, also with vivid bright colors I personally loved, it is not a great movie on the level of past Pixar greats such as "Finding Nemo", "Ratatouille", or "Toy Story 3" to name some of the best in my book. It doesn't have the all important emotional impact in a story that is by its nature very complicated, too complicated especially for kids.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My First film review on Metacritic - I'm a movie goer but I don't really care enough to comment on most.

Inside Out -

I've watched pretty much every Pixar film there is, having a young daughter means we watch anything that comes up. This years 'HOME' by dream-works my daughter is still currently obsessed with, and I've watched it well over 100 times sort-of-thing... painful but it's bearable still today, just!
I was hoping for much the same from Pixars latest offering.

For me, an Adult, this film was either a 9 or a 10. There's a lot of in-humour aimed at parents and I was happy to laugh at these parts, but my god, for a children's film, this is one onslaught of misery. My daughter finished watching this film confused and I think genuinely upset.

The plot is a growing-of-age story whereby the main character, an eleven year old girl, moves towns and loses everything that her former home had with it. The main charisma character that controls her brain alongside 'sadness' get lost in her long-term memory, and from thereon it's one bad thing happening after another to the main character as the personalities left controlling her brain fail in every situation after, while the lost items themselves stumble from one tragic loss to the next, such as losing the memory of her childhood friend (who is literally erased from existence) - I'm not keen on death as a theme within kids films, it's not easily approached and leads to uncomfortable questions.

I'm rating this film down as it's not really a kids film at all. I think of those films I watched over and over in my childhood (which haven't become sad memories now!!) and they all had that Spielberg magic, charm and adventure. This film as a film for a

Inside Out was nothing short of a masterwork, Pixar's best since Toy Story 3 and one of their best overall.

Pixar films can be relied upon to have great animation, and Inside Out certainly does have great animation. No, wonderful animation and some of the company's most ingeniously inventive, with gorgeously vibrant colours, a very imaginatively rendered setting (and the lands even more ingeniously done, the next land more so than the last), very meticulous and beautifully modelled backgrounds and clever character designs that match the emotions more than ideally. Michael Giacchino's sparkling, rousing and very charming score is one of my personal favourite scores of the year so far, and every bit as great as his score for Up.

A superb job was done with the script here too, the comedy is clever and witty without ever being forced and balances subtly with the drama, the drama is some of the most truly poignant of any Pixar film and it doesn't ever feel manipulative or overdone and it's very smartly insightful. The story, not one of THE most innovative concepts but is one of the more imaginative uses of it and is quite original for Pixar actually, goes at a slightly steadier pace than other Disney films, but still captivated. It was very easy to completely connect with Riley and her situation and this was easily the Pixar film since Toy Story 3 that I connected with emotionally the most, also one of Pixar's most moving stories quite easily.

Loved the characters too, Anger, Fear, Disgust and Bing Bong (the imaginary friend and the 'epitome of immaturity', without ever being annoying, his back story did bring a tear to the eye) stole every scene they were in, and even Sadness managed to crack some funny one-liners even in her depressive state. Joy also positively lights up the screen and Riley was easy to connect with and much more than just a stereotypical teen girl. The voice acting is splendid. Amy Poehler is note perfect as Joy with her spirited banter giving the character so much life while also bringing a human element to her as well, Lewis Black gives an explosively barn-storming turn as Anger, Phyllis Smith is amusing and affecting, Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling are similarly priceless and in a way that makes the characters of Fear and Disgust endearing rather than annoying, Richard Kind is innocently charming and Kyle MacLachlan and Diane Lane are appropriately compassionate.

Overall, a masterful return to form for Pixar. It's their best since Toy Story 3 and one of their best overall as well. 10/10 Bethany Cox

The animation and visual were gorgeous and stunning, I loved every character, the emotion balls, and the different lands of personality. All of the voice over performances were phenomenal especially from Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, Lewis Black, and Kaitlyn Dias. The writing and story were remarkable, the story really showed what it is like to be a teenager and having to move to a new town, house, and school and the emotion that come with. I loved how original the concept of the movie was. This movie was funny, cute, and extremely touching. The movies score was outstanding and it is my favorite movie score of all time, it is so nice to listen to. The exploration of the human mind is the film’s greatest strength and its greatest weakness. Its joyful to see the film explain how the various features of the human mind work leading to tons of laughs and smiles. At the same time though it feels like too much of the film is that. Inside Out often gets so caught up in the gimmick that it forgets to tell a story. There are really powerful themes not only about the necessity of sadness; but about how each emotion has its place and you shouldn’t let one emotion rule your entire life. Whenever the film explores that it becomes something special. Had each element of Riley’s mind tied back to the film’s theme and helped the characters explore themselves like in Finding Nemo or Up this film could’ve become something special. Its still charming as it is having the fun of the mind and again there is some substance but again the gimmick holds it back. Even with all that said though I still really enjoy the film its more an explanation for why it doesn’t hit me as hard as Pixar’s other films. Whether it be for its charming gimmick or its thought provoking message Inside Out is the first time in a while I can say Pixar made a film that was really good. Not there best ever but there best in a while. There best film since Toy Story 3 and their best original film since Up. Hopefully really good movies return to being a norm and not an exception. It felt a little long, and I was a little bored now and then. I saw it in a theater full of kids and there was some restlessness, which doesn't happen for the best Pixar films. It isn't a bad film, but it certainly isn't as funny as some of Pixar's films. It mostly deals with a little girl's depression about moving to a new city with her family. In fact, I only remember one laugh out loud part, where we get a glimpse into a boy teenager's mind when he tries to talk to a girl. I would rank this one somewhere in the middle of all the Pixar films, which means it's still way above average compared to most animated features, but not a classic. Expand

The filmmakers resist the temptation to go cyber in their depiction of the brain’s workings, substituting a zillion physical memory-balls moved by gears through grooves in walls. The emotions man a control board but one with buttons and knobs that are a decades-long throwback in appearance. Speaking of which, some of the funniest parts of the movie are its quick excursions into the control rooms of other characters, whose emotions are driven by entirely different incentives. But if that doesn’t grab you, there are plenty of other sources of laughter and delight in this film.

It’s only when Riley begins having problems that the film does too. The movie has an aura of cuteness—driven by Joy, who looks like a fugitive from “Frozen”—or at least enough so that it looks like it should have considerable kiddie appeal. But the themes carry a psychological weight that many a kid is likely to appeal to her parent with disturbed eyes for explanation. Not that the parent will know. The moral of the story? My guess: you have to own your sadness, not reject it. Okay, okay . . . huh? Answer to kid’s questioning look: More popcorn.

From start to finish, Inside Out is a lot of fun. It's got an all-star cast, which makes it less surprising that the movie is SO good. The story is relatable to everyone, it was done in a way to both shed light and make light of just growing up.

The voice acting was incredible, the visuals were flawless, the characters came alive in realistic ways, the plot was interesting and surprisingly moving, and the concept overall was just genius. The only flaw was that it did drag just a bit towards the middle of the film but that's just my opinion. Overall, I think this is a film that adults might actually enjoy even more than children. I don't get the high score on this one. It manages to bring the tears near the end, but overall it's really quite boring. Most kids won't enjoy this one, but it was okay, not that I would want to watch it a second time, but at least it wasn't bad.

It's also one of the most triggering films around, so that must say something.

A little too serious for kids under ten, but by all means, pack up the family and see this movie. Great premise and great ending: every good memory is touched by both a little joy and sadness.

Following in the footsteps of many Pixar films before it, INSIDE OUT takes incredibly remarkable animated and chooses to teach its audience something about life. It’s funny, intelligent and will keep you thinking long after it comes to a close.

They haven't always been perfect, but some have been so very close—Wall-E, Up, Finding Nemo and Toy Story 3 come to mind. Inside Out may yet be my favorite. The emotional impact of the first 10 minutes of Up is brought to an entire movie here. I may have laughed a lot, and came away smiling; but, in the middle, I cried, I weeped and openly bawled. The secret of Pixar has always been the ability to make a story that kids could follow with elements that only the adults watching would understand, and then to make those elements almost a whole other movie. Think of Finding Nemo, which had two actual separate story lines, Nemo's and his Dad's, yet the storytelling was so complex that both stories had this magic dust applied to them and a classic was born. Here, the moments so vivid and painful for adults will just slip right past kids—Bambi's mother dying this isn't. And, judging from the kids in my audience they loved it too. But the adults, were floored by the beautiful depiction of the necessity of sadness in our lives, and the sacrifice of youthful innocence that happens to all of us as adulthood creeps in. The emotional impact was among the strongest I have ever had in a theatre, and it was also one of the purest. Pete Doctor and Pixar didn't just pull my heartstrings and manipulate my emotions, they created that emotion by brilliant storytelling and trusting their audience to make the connections. Inside Out is the best kind of art, the kind that everyone is moved by, and no one can dismiss. It is as good as movies get. Expand

The film plays to its strengths, putting emotions and plot above comedy and taking the time to develop its world and characters as relatable, detailed and at times very touching. While the general concept may have been done before, Pixar has something truly special to share with us for 2015. Expand

There is lots of smart elements in this movie, like the inclusion of psychological therms. One of my favorite Walt Disney and one of my favorite animation movies, I got different emotions during this movie, which I didn't expected to have in an animation movie, I felt really sad in some parts of the movie, laughed at others and felt really happy too. Overall this is a very unique movie and should be watched by every animation lovers without a single doubt. Recommend it for kids and grown-ups. Expand

Ended up watching this on a long-haul flight across the Pacific and boy was I very much impressed with it. It's very well written and the animation is of course top-notch. The fact that it serves as a real commentary on life and how there's always going to be ups and downs and it's okay to be sad and so many other very real and compelling themes... anyway, long story short: a fantastic movie by Pixar and definitely worth a watch. I'm glad they're starting to do original titles again, because DreamWorks has actually started to catch up (including the patented tear-jerking) and so has Disney. Frozen and Tangled were really good and gave that same kind of magic. Luckily Pixar still has it. I don't ever want them to falter too much because the cartoon movie would have been dead without them and the 3d movie would have never existed without them. Expand

The main characters are all memorable, the premise is inventive and unusually cerebral for a kids' movie, and the overall complexity is extremely admirable. At points it reminded me of a children's version of inception or interstellar, delving into heady ideas such as memories, their impact on our lives, and the way we perceive them. I was annoyed at points however when it became clear that certain elements were added to pander to kids, such as the imaginary elephant friend Bing Bong, even though I guess you could argue that it was a kids' movie and that character paid off in the end anyways. It all adds up to a moving and thought provoking finale though that nearly erases any previous missteps. From its first moments it was clear Inside Out would be something special, and I recommend it to anyone who loves movies, not just children. Expand
