Really enjoyed this. Had me guessing how it would turn out right until the very end. Love films like that. Great cast and great direction from Spike Lee

Spike Lee's Engaging A-Team Heist-Film Scores

No ordinary film maker, Lee taps his expertise in film making, applying superior cinematography, editing, and direction skills.

Headlining the film is Denzel Washington as the good guy cop, and Clive Owen as the highly intelligent robber (with the screen-play thankfully avoiding the crazy/insane cliche' Bond movie villain characterization).

"Filling-in" as good as one will find in bank robber caper films are the superior supporting cast performances of Christopher Plummer (who has never delivered anything sub-par in his career), Jodie Foster (effectively playing against her "type"), William Dafoe (over-due for an Oscar), Chiwetel Ejiofor (perfect subtle side-arm detective partner to Denzel), and across the board good performances by the entire supporting ensemble cast.

Lee doesn't try to play out the big surprise ending cliche', but instead allows one to piece things together as the film unfolds, letting us "in" to the narrative piece by piece. This is refreshing and elevates the film overall.

Really hard to find any critical piece missing in the film. Editing and pacing excellent, and even the potentially preposterous story idea works. Yes there are a few "identifying the magician's tricks" moments inside what could have been a perceived as an over the top narrative, but one overlooks those because this is quite the entertaining film and it is put together so well - Witty dialogue delivered by some of the all-time great actors who were perfectly cast on their parts.

Bravo to all concerned

I like such intelligent movies, especially when criminals are being shown as smart one. There are many clever elements, that surprise you and making you ask, how the counterpart will react to it.
The actors were great also.

Washington stars as Detective Keith Frazier, a hostage negotiator for the NYPD. His task for one hot day is figure out how to get dozens of hostages out of bank that was just robbed. His adversary is actor Clive Owen. I've never understood why the public doesn't see more Owen. He's good looking, British and a great actor. Owen and Washington go toe to toe in a two hour plus thriller.
Add the legendary actors Jodie Foster and Christopher Plummer, you have a tense thriller.
This is definitely Lee's most commercial and accessible movie. On a New Year Eve's night where I was basically doing nothing, this was a treat.

The biggest problem with this move: it seems like they made the cops way too stupid. And it felt like it was because they couldn't write the plot well. Still an okay-ish movie.

Inside Man

The sense of urgency is kept alive throughout the course of the feature that helps the audience reach to the climax swiftly which may come off as a bit poignant, hoax and unsatisfactory too (for some viewers) but it surely is undeniably entertaining. Spike Lee's execution skills is what holds this tale with multiple characters that even though has "seen-this-seen-that" screenplay by Russell Gewirtz and predictable twists, still delivers. Denzel Washington and Clive Owen are convincing in their parellel roles that portrays two sides of the coin and is supported with a great cast like Christopher Plummer, Jodie Foster and Willem Dafoe. Inside Man hits hard and fast in its first act where the writing doesn't flinch on taking bold risks which keeps the viewers on the edge of the seat and even though the last act is a bit slow, one can always root for Denzel and his amusing conversations that is smartly written with other characters.

'Inside Man,' a Crime Caper Starring Denzel Washington.

For most of his career, the great and maddeningly unreliable Spike Lee has been anything but — to borrow the title of his diverting new film — an inside man. Mr. Lee, who hit the scene in the mid-1980's with "She's Gotta Have It," a barbed independent comedy that jump-started the black film movement and made him a national brand, has preferred to be seen as an outside man, a rebel who said what he wanted, when he wanted, far from the industry establishment. To judge from this precision-tooled amusement, Mr. Lee may have missed his calling (one of them, anyway) as a studio hire.

"Inside Man" is a jolt, partly because it comes equipped rather incongruously with the name of Mr. Lee's company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, but mostly because this is the kind of seamless diversion that should be a stock item in Hollywood, but isn't. Much like Richard Donner's recent actioner, "16 Blocks," another effective piece of genre showmanship, "Inside Man" works because it takes a familiar setup — in this case, a Wall Street bank heist that mutates into a hostage crisis — and twists it ever so slightly. A particularly solid screenplay helps here, as do stars who can actually act — this film's holy trinity being Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster — along with an excellent supporting cast and the best lineup of pusses and mugs outside "The Sopranos."

Here's how it goes down: Mr. Owen stares into the camera and announces that he is about to commit "the perfect bank robbery." Whether his character, Dalton Russell, succeeds is immaterial to how he gets from the first act to the third, which is where Mr. Lee's movie love comes in. This is the least overtly personal of Mr. Lee's films, but it's also his most polished and satisfying work in years, with none of the raggedness that sometimes mars even his best intentions. Taking his cue from the surprising, witty screenplay by the newcomer Russell Gewirtz, the filmmaker frames the heist and subsequent standoff as a really big show — namedropping "Dog Day Afternoon" along the way — then cuts his actors loose and lets them play.

As the action pings between Russell working his wicked ways inside the bank (beating hostages, forcing them to wear unflattering coveralls); Mr. Washington's smooth operator, a veteran detective named Keith Frazier; and Ms. Foster's Madeline White, a fixer hired by the bank, you might find yourself trying to unknot the increasingly tangled plot. Don't bother. Filled with playful noise and nonsense, clever feints and digressions, "Inside Man" has a story to tell, but its most sustained pleasures come from its performances, especially the three leads. To watch Mr. Washington breeze into a scene smooth as silk, smooth as Bogart and Easy Rawlins combined, or to listen to Mr. Owen murmur sweet nothings into the camera, is to experience the ineffable pleasures that only big-screen stars can provide.

Mr. Lee rarely treats his actresses or female characters as well as their male counterparts, but whether by design or neglect, he helps Ms. Foster deliver her wittiest, most relaxed performance in ages. Part Mata Hari, part Ilsa the She Wolf, she stalks the sets in form-fitting suits and nose-bleed heels that show off her spectacular legs wonderfully. (She could kill with those things!) In a story dominated by men, in which most of the women are either desexualized or double-D babes, her character presents an amusing fantasy of female power. One of those mysterioso brokers who circumvent both the law and the criminal element for the deepest pockets in town, Madeline isn't the equal of any man: she's superior. And you thought dominatrixes wore only black leather.

Like everyone else in the film, Madeline seems interested only in getting hers. Russell wants his ill-gotten gains, Detective Frazier wants his promotion, and the bank bigwig (Christopher Plummer) wants his secrets kept — it's a Hobbesian world, after all. Mr. Lee, meanwhile, most likely wants the respect that he has always been due. Consistently underrated and underappreciated, this filmmaker is an erratic talent, if no more so than many ensconced in Hollywood, and his insistence that race matters has cost him dearly with the mainstream (i.e., white) audience. He's right, of course, that race matters, which is why, in between plot points and star turns, he gently and, at times, rather hilariously, insists on reminding us that it does. He may have sublet this "Spike Lee Joint" to out-of-towners, but it's good to see that he hasn't left the neighborhood.

If I had to watch a movie over-and-over again, this would be it. It is filled with energy and is absolutely incredible. The soundtrack was amazing and fit well in the movie. The actors were well placed, and were great at their job.

Clive Owen's ego and personality really fits the character "Dalton Russel" as explained. Denzel Washington also did a fantastic job of "Detective Keith Frazier." Overall the actors of this movie really had a place and knew what they were doing.

If you are looking for an action-packed, somewhat comedic, and suspense-filled movie, you should really check out "Inside Man." Spike Lee has outdone himself on this one, as it is a well put together film that is sure to please you. It is rated 'R' so be careful who watches it. Overall great movie.

Clive Owen kills it as the bank robber. Really, he and the heist as a whole are what make this film a success. The trickery and deception he employs really make this a fun and entertaining watch. Denzel Washington also has a good turn as the detective, though he certainly takes a back seat to Owen, as well as Jodie Foster who does great in her role as a "fixer". As we watch the events unfold, it is very entertaining to watch the head-to-head battles between the three as they all represent competing interests concerning the heist. Finally, the ending is great as we learn how everything transpired. There are still some things that make no sense, but I will let it slide here.

On the negative side, as with all Spike Lee films, there are parts where race is shoved down your throat. Luckily, it did not choke the life out of this one, but still felt forced, irrelevant to the storyline, and unnecessary. In addition, the camera work is at times spotty and left me scratching my head and wondering why they chose to use that angle or use that effect, etc. Two scenes in particular (one in which Washington's character runs to the bank doors and one in which Foster's character is patted down by one of the bank robbers) where the camera work is annoying and takes you out of the film entirely.

It's about the volatile showdown between a determined cop and a perfectionist bank robber is sent spiraling toward disaster when a scheming power broker steps in to take control of the situation in this hair-raising heist flick directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster. Dalton Russell (Owen) is a bank robber with a difference. In his quest to execute the perfect heist, Dalton has taken every possible factor into consideration. Dalton's uncanny ability of staying one step ahead of the law thwarts even-tempered Detective Keith Frazier's (Washington) best efforts. But there's another factor at play. The bank president (Christopher Plummer) has requested the services of high-profile negotiator Madeline White (Foster). Despite her commendable track record, Madeline is something of a wild card, and before the day is over, this bank robbery will go down in history as one of the most elaborate heists ever executed. Like John Singleton, he may have found his legs as a pulp manufacturer whose least arguable claim to fame is that he can do fast, funny, attitudinal genre films better than Tony Scott. Washington and Foster, for their parts, are merely dukes in a sick kingdom, taking what roles they're offered for people their age (and sex) just to keep their careers afloat in the public brain-pan. Lee is playing the genre like a board game, and his film is a sniggering riff, filled with hyperbolic New York stereotypes, sexist jokes, puns, scattershot commentary on racial profiling and smug banter. As bogus in its way as Richard Donner's 16 Blocks, Inside Man has an even more irritating disrespect for the verities of police work and for the emotional life of urban Americans. There are a few rousing achievements on the table, in particular a comical police debate--instigated by a faux riddle tossed by Owen, about trains, U.S. currency and Grand Central Station--as well as a fast joke involving a Sikh hostage who, outraged by profiling, acknowledges that yes, he can easily hail a cab in Mid-Eastern-cabbie-saturated New York. But heist films are hardly what they used to be; for decades, they were a vehicle for postwar desperation and fatalism, and today the genre has an empty tank of frisson to offer without film noir's acknowledgment of doom. The difference between, say, Stanley Kubrick's 1956 masterpiece The Killing and contemporary daydreams like Inside Man is the difference between a luckless hell on earth and a dull weekend in the Poconos. Unlike Lee's previous dramas, "Inside Man" works, even as an action flick, which is a genre that he's never taken before. Like a "Spike fan" may suspect, he still keeps that racy energetic tone, and also keeps his film-making old fashioned. Overall, the shots look great, you'll find some sizzling action, plenty of tense sequencing, and a lot of great dialogue. But the aspect that makes "Inside Man" a true winner, is the work of the ensemble cast, done by Oscar winning-nominated actors Denzle Washington , Jodie Foster, and Clive Owen. They are all terrific here. The movie does have it's shortcomings though, like the awful music and the corn-ball intro. One thing that I also found unappealing was the pull-off : a conclusion too Denzle's line, "Come on this aint' no bank robbery!", that you've probably seen in commercials or trailers. It seemed way too convoluted for such a well-made movie that was perfectly executed for the first 100 minutes. Although it somewhat disappointed me to some extent knowing it could have been a Grade A thriller, "Inside Man" is nevertheless great, classy entertainment, and it stays with you. Expand

On several occasions, this mess was nothing more than thinly veiled racial jabs masquerading as a crime thriller that goes nowhere. We see Spike's usual M.O. on display throughout the film, which basically amounts to making caucasians feel guilty about...well being caucasians. Spike Lee was in way over his head on this one. Case in point...Lee is the only dolt transparent enough to cast Jodie Foster as a manipulative power broker (who's white of course since white=manipulative in Spike Lee joints) then proceed to name the character Ms. White. Even the overt racial sarcasm falls flat as his breathless pursuit of half cocked social commentary drags this sophomoric production down to the abyss of most forgettable films of all time. Expand

Sorely lacking in style, this potboiler is all over the place! The writing of Denzel Washington's character is often ridiculous; and he works valiently to overcome it. The only real entertainment value for me were the unintential (I assume) moments of camp; notably, the telephone scene between Denzel and his girlfriend; and the bizarre performance from Jodie Foster, who seems to be trying to channel Ann Coulter! Foster's attempts at being cool and cunning come off as simply laughable. I'm not sure how Christopher Plummer kept a straight face in his scenes with her. For me, only Foster's performance fiasco made this film worth my viewing time. And why was Willem Dafoe's participation needed here? All in all, this movie No one can deny that this movie has a great cast. The acting is terrific. The directing is classic Spike Lee--brilliant at times, but he takes every chance to work in commentary about race, religion and ethnicity. All in all, this movie presents a good picture and the plot depicts what would be a brilliant heist if it were true. However, there are serious flaws in the plot (which are gracefully glossed over by expert acting), but the end result is that we really don't know the various character's motivations for their behavior. At one point we are told by one of the theives "I did it for the money", but that doesn't seem to add up with what was taken. Similarly I'm still trying to figure out exactly what motivated Denzel to bring Jodie a telephone number in one of the last scenes. The sequence of the movie is expertly executed to both provide hints and keep you guessing. Denzel's character is likeable, funny and feels real. It reminds me of some of the old detective fictions that were made in the 30's and 40's like the Maltese Falcon, and then later on in the 70's Chinatown. No, Denzel didn't use a gun and blow stuff up ever chance he got, but he was intelligent and methodical in solving the case. While using all the new tricks of film and the technology that we have developed, the film still adhereing to the classic detective fiction motiff. The filming was excellent, and the director managed to get tons of great shots in that helped to set the tone for the movie. The closeups on the characters, the rackish angles that cause uneasiness, and the double focuses helped to present us with a story and feeling that is really unsurpassed by just about anything that has come out this year. Over half of the theater waited throughout the entire ending credits with a desperate hope that they would eventually get there money's worth and a portion of the plot would be seen to completion. no such luck. Loose ends are everywhere from the role of clive owen's fellow bank robbers to how the robbers got all of their information to how they were at all connected to Case. Although Denzel's observation that "this ain't no bank robbery" is correct, I was disappointed with the "deep" and "complex" conspiracy that for some reason involved the mayor of new york, although his character seemed unaware of even his own role halfway through the movie Expand

I was expecting something spectacular from the reviews, but the movie was a letdown. Denzel was good and Clive was good, but the movie just did not seem suspenseful. There are many weaknesses with the theft. The movie did seem to drag down I was expecting something spectacular from the reviews, but the movie was a letdown. Denzel was good and Clive was good, but the movie just did not seem suspenseful. There are many weaknesses with the theft. The movie did seem to drag down and Jodie F's role was not needed and not inspiring. The movie is better than most from the acting, but that is not saying much due to today's movie crapola. You would be better off to see the Thomas Crown Affair (old one and remake) and avoid this one. Expand
