To give away too much would be doing the film a disservice, but unfortunately that hardly matters in my opinion, since the film ultimately proved to be much of a letdown for me. Granted, there are some genuinely tense and creepy moments, especially in the given context of the pandemic that we ourselves have been witnessing this past year, but they're mostly overshadowed by an unfocused story, especially in the second half when the film begins to really lose its bearings. There's decent acting involved from the select few actors in this film, but even they can't pick up the slack of the film's story, and the further it went on, the more aimless, pointless and random it all began to feel. I found it increasingly difficult to make sense of anything in much of the second half. Overall, a creepy atmosphere simply isn't enough to overcome the shortcomings of this film's random and unfocused story, along with a lack of more genuine scares. Expand

Are you currently high on said mushroom farts or on acid? If you answered yes to all of these, you will love this film. If you are not into these thing, stay far away from this horrible film. No amount of tension or "horror" can excuse this horribly scripted film with these side-show special effects meant to drive you insane. Instead they are annoying and could be harmful to those audience members with photosensitivity, epilepsy, sensitive ears, and/or just don't want to be subjected to this "neo-horror" mushroom fantasy. Added bonus, the ending is horrendous. Expand

I can recognize when someone's trying to create something original, and Ben Wheatley had his idea, but other than that, he fell a long way from invoking something that was sinister or even disturbing.

In the Earth is touted as a folk horror tale with a pandemic theme.
Because apparently we want to continue watching new movies that remind us of that, right?

The film is set on a remote research site during an unspecified virus outbreak. However, that is all. This movie has nothing interesting or relevant to say about pandemics.

What follows in the story seems for a few moments The Blair Witch Project, an unseen attack in their tents is included.
And the story continues at a slow pace where we end up involved in laughable rituals involving an old stone monolith and a spirit of nature trying to make the whole thing look unsettling. Unfortunately for the director, the climax he builds looks more like a bad mushroom trip, and ends up provoking some unwanted humor, because I honestly don't know how I could even say that what I saw had even a hint of horror. Joel Fry was a lousy casting choice and it's clear that he's not an actor who can sustain a leading role.
There are many moments when he seems to be holding back the laughter, and if your own protagonist doesn't believe in what you're doing, it goes without saying how quickly the rest of your work collapses.

Massive disappointment.

I made an account to tell you that this movie is not worth seeing. It thinks it’s smarter than it it’s. Imagine a bunch of epileptic lights and radio waves and you’ve seen this film. Truly truly awful . May god help us all

So much of In the Earth's other promotional material was/is misleading. Things such as its "Nature is a Force of Evil" tagline, the various synopses you can find out there that say things like "as the forest comes to life around them," and even the alternative poster that sees a plant growing up into the nose of actress Ellora Torchia paint the picture of a biological nightmare akin to the Annihilation adaptation we should have gotten back in 2018. What we were actually given instead though is a cult horror flick where our protagonists get tormented by a deranged weirdo with some serious old-world religious fanatical issues, which while not terrible is nowhere near as intriguing as what it was implied to be offering.

Born during the first year and out of the frustrations of our modern pandemic era, the film tells the story of a world ravaged by its own virus. It explores the effects of isolation on the human mind and the things people will be willing to latch onto no matter how illogical or untested if it comes with any sort of promise of relief from their stresses and fears. While it's cool to see something that encapsulates and plays on so many of our present day anxieties as we're still in the midst of being afflicted by them, the film's timeliness is a bit of a double-edged sword. Reportedly scripted and filmed in a mere two weeks, the project's spur-of-the-moment nature makes it simultaneously both impressive and half-baked.

The science at the core of the plot shows signs of depth, but is ultimately brought down by it's lack of exposition and explanation behind character's actions. Meanwhile the hallucinogenic visuals and coarse synth soundtrack craft one heck of an atmosphere that sadly only feigns the presence of the supernatural without anything of actual terror manifesting to show for it. A somewhat unrelated complaint, but this may also be the sole time I've had to watch a movie where everyone spoke English with the subtitles on because a portion of the cast's accents were too thick to understand. Joel Fry is borderline unintelligible throughout.

In the Earth deserves some praise for what writer and director Ben Wheatley was able to cook up in such a brief period. There's always something engaging to look at and listen to due to the unique stylistic flourishes. Yet, while I'm willing to admit part of my disappointment stems from what I expected to be here without having looked at any of the pre-release footage available beforehand, the final product wasn't fleshed out enough to fully engage me with what it did provide regardless. It's a compelling idea that was fast-tracked to capitalize on the legitimate day-to-day struggles we're call facing in this very moment, leaving it short off the necessary development that could have made it truly impactful and with me wishing it had been more.

These COVID films are struggling a lot to get things right.

Initially, 'In the Earth' walks a path very near to 'Midsommar' and 'Annihilation." In the vein of 'The Blair Witch Project,' the folk horror in this film points to something very unsettling, but director Ben Wheatley never delivers.

The acting is bad. The plot goes bonkers during the second part. The exploration of the relationship between science and magic lacks coherence. The ending is quite unsatisfying. Wheatley tries to incorporate plenty of horror subgenres with no effect. There are even some slasher segments, but they lead nowhere.

'In the Earth' is very cryptic and not in a good way. The cool psychedelic sequences — of which Wheatley is known for — are cool, but, in the end, the film is quite a disappointment.

It seems Ben Wheatly took those themes and produced In The Earth as if reacting to a fever dream during lockdown. The movie itself is a fever dream with creepy sound design, Ken Russell like hallucinations and moments of confusion and scenes of graphic physical pain. As the wide imbalance of critical versus audience response indicates, it's a movie that you can admire for it's WTFness, but at the same time most people will shake their head and wonder what they just saw. Put me in the latter camp. Expand

First off: the warning is no joke! If you have issue with seizures sparked by visual stimuli do not watch this movie. I don't have any issues and it was painful to sit through that.

Now, the movie. Thoroughly average movie that should've ended 30 minutes earlier than its current run time. The rest of the audience mimicked my pain by checking the time also as boredom set it. The movie had potential but it gets lost along the way. The professional review score is too high and subsequentially misleading. Pay attention to the user score which I am sure will be more representative of the movie's actual entertainment value.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is pretty typical Ben Wheatley fare, quite trippy, a bit like 'that scene' in A Field in England, only this is contemporary. It does, however, centre on folk horror, with old folklore stories retold. It is pretty immersive at times and I should probably point out that strobe lighting is used at times, so if you have photo sensitive epilepsy then you may be best avoiding this film for that reason. I found the story a bit hard to fully follow in detail but it was still suitably unsettling I suppose. I was aware of there being a somewhat gruesome scene involving amputation, although when it happened it wasn't as extreme as I'd expected. I wouldn't say this is an entirely blood filled film, though its certainly not for the squeamish. Its a suitably atmospheric watch, if a bit disorientating, which I guess is kind of a good thing for a horror film. Its an experience - I'm not sure I can really say its not been done before but it's certainly ok. Expand

This film follows researchers who are searching for a cureHappy Huluween, everyone! It's that time of year where horror films abound. Thanks to Hulu I decided to check out a film that came out earlier this year that I missed, In The Earth. This film follows researchers who are searching for a cure to a disastrous virus. While a scientist and park scout venture deep into the forest to find a colleague, things take an unexpected turn. Ooooooh, what will they find in this never ending forest that has a local scary lore? Let's find out if this is worth stream during this Halloween season.

Just based on the description you can tell this is definitely a movie made in the pandemic era. You can see it with the masks and the distance between actors during scenes at all times. It's just interesting to see how the pandemic has been written into movies without saying, "Coronavirus made us film like this." Anyway, this movie features some pretty gross sequences, but they don't really connect to where viewers may think the movie is going. This movie struggles with establishing its identity. Everyone fears going into the haunted forest but for some reason these characters just don't understand horror movies. Don't read from random old books. Don't befriend strangers. Don't drink the unknown juice. Most importantly, if they aren't your significant other, forget them in the forest! Nevertheless, the movie combines elements from some films like Midsommar, The Happening, and the Forest that ultimately makes a mish mosh of nothingness. It seems like the filmmakers just took the weirdest parts of each of those movies and put them together. "Yeah, that'll be good," said no one ever. The movie felt like it had multiple personality disorder. Am I a slasher, a psychological thriller or mystical haunted forest? Either way, the film feigns originality to a failure but succeeds in some cool artistry. This is a pothead, acid trip, shroom eating viewers nightmare. I can understand why this might be appealing to some but to most you'll be left scratching your head.

Long story short, this pandemic flick is simply weird and uninspiring. Viewers of horror films will get a similar feel as Midsommar but in England with a pandemic virus and The Happening in the background vibe. In the Earth is a strange film that while gross lacks sense to be scary. I was a bit more confused and bored than thrilled or scared. Grab one single popped kernel if you get bored this Halloween if you want to watch this acid trip film, but there are better spooks to be had.
