In fact, the film has an intensive visual and stylistic treatment, with the use and abuse of CGI and other visual resources, but it is not able to tell us a good story. Being a film based on classical mythology, and this mythology being such a rich set of interesting stories, such a weakness is, for me, truly unforgivable.

The film begins by telling, very sketchily, the way the Olympic gods won and imprisoned the Titans. Then, he takes advantage of this base to create an unreasonable story in which a king, revolted against them, decides to wage war to free the titans, and the gods choose to rely on the figure of Theseus, a human, or demigod, son of Zeus with a human girl, that they think they have everything it takes to fight the rebellion.

Directed ineffectively and uncoordinated by Tarsem Singh, the cast does what it can, but has neither the material nor the opportunity to do much. Mickey Rourke is the actor who stands out the most, and who seemed to be effective as a villain and very committed to making his character a detestable figure. John Hurt was also impeccable in a simple cameo. Everything else is a descent to Tartarus: Henry Cavill seemed totally uncomfortable with his character, who is overly sketchy and devoid of personality; Luke Evans was a Zeus stripped of interest and charisma; Freida Pinto appears only because the film needs a beautiful actress in the midst of so much accumulated testosterone.

Where Director Singh really bet strongly was on visual style and production values, and nothing like a grand and expensive package to cover the void of content in this film. Its cinematography, strongly stylized and artificial, reminds us of some graphic novels or comic books: the CGI was in charge of providing us with vibrant colors, out-of-the-box sets and a certain dreamlike feeling. The costumes, quite exaggerated, align very well with this aesthetic and the action sequences, perhaps more sparse than we might expect, were exaggerated and blistered as far as possible. Everything would be acceptable with a good story behind it, but it didn't happen here.

Unfortunately on aspects of dialogue writing, screenplay writing, direction and pacing it is as bad as Clash of the Titans 2010, perhaps even worse.
Slow Burning, good performances, decent VFX and excellent art direction that keep the first and second act interesting are unable to save the third act of the movie which is where everything just falls apart.

The Good

Cavill, Rourke, John Hurt and Frieda, all turn in good performances as Theseus, King Hyperion, Zeus in Disguise and Oracle Phaedra respectively. Based on whatever material was given to them, they turn in interesting performances but the dialogue writing is another matter altogether which we will get to.
A lot of 300 comparisons but aside from the color grading and Myth based concept very little is similar to the Zach Snyder Epic.

VFX and art direction is where this movie really shines, which is no surprise considering director Tarsem's style and is unique to this movie. The Slow pacing was interesting and intriguing but once you get to the end you realize that it was not a intentional choice but rather something they were forced to do.

The Bad

Not all bad, but unfortunately everything that is bad are one of the important pillars that make a movie good. Even though the screenplay was competently executed, the written screenplay was too short barely coming over the 95 min mark excluding opening and end credits. It feels stretched out for the first three quarters of the movie and you only get this feeling once you complete the movie which is a uniquely bad achievement. Initially the slow pacing feels intentional but after the climax you realize it was trying to deliver a mind over matter experience, but really fails at doing so.

Writing and Direction was probably the worst aspects of the film. There were good performances in the film marred by flat, uninteresting and weightless dialogue for this mythic story with clearly bad direction as the actors perform well yet the scenes fail to have the proper impact.

Sound direction was also something that I found lacking, especially near the climax where Cavill as Theseus is giving a riling speech to soldiers; but the volumes of the whole scene are so off that the speech has no impact whatsoever on the viewer. Sadly this is also the best written piece of dialogue in the movie.

The entire climax is a massive let down, the whole point of Greek Myth is to see Warriors and Armies triumph each other with Intelligence and cunning traps along with pure brute force. There is zero intelligence or tricks for all the climax battles. No traps, no smart human ingenuity that is a must for Ancient Wars, even the whole scene of the Gods fighting the Titans which should have been a spectacle was such a let down. Not sure if there was budget misuse or if there is a lot of movie on the cutting floor but it really chokes whatever this movie could have been.

During the making of this movie it feels as though the director Tarsem, writer duo Charley and Vlas were probably thinking they were making a movie that was going to have Substance over Style, Quality over quantity. Unfortunately they end up doing the exact opposite on all fronts making the movie a visually stunning but largely unsatisfying experience.
