The film is as faithful to Greek mythology as Thor is to tales of the Norse Gods, but it ultimately doesn't matter. Tarsem's goal is to give viewers an experience a little different from the norm and, to that end, he succeeds. The "wow!" factor is in full evidence. Read full review

As mythic spectacles go, it beats "Clash Of The Titans," particularly in the areas of intimidating villainy and actual Titan-clashing. Nonetheless, it isn't any smarter than its inspirations, just prettier. Read full review

Immortals is not only entirely without humor, but is dominated by a lot of huffing and puffing, thunderous self-importance and windy Socratic quotations about the immortality and divinity of men's souls. You just have to roll your eyes after a while. Read full review

Immortals is the latest disaster of post-conversion 3-D, a projected spectacle so dark it is literally hard to see. This is an ugly, burlap sack of a film, stitched with jagged seams and overstuffed with computer-generated chintz, gold-lamé leotards and fetishistic headgear. Read full review

This is definitely the best movie of all time. It's a brutal combination on 1% excellence, and 99% PURE AWESOME. The day before I went to see this movie, I thought I knew what awesome was, but I was so wrong. I saw this movie on opening day. Went in with mixed feelings, hoping it would be good, expecting a big let down ( such as clash of the titans (2011), watchmen etc.). This movie was shockingly unique however. Visuals, and characters were excellent. Lots of action, but not like 300 when itI saw this movie on opening day. Visuals, and characters were excellent. Lots of action, but not like 300 when it takes over the story. The acting was also top notch. Henry Calvillo was excellent, so was Micky Rourke. If your into action movies, this is the movie to see right now. I can't remember the last action movie i saw in theatres that i didn't feel ripped off when it was over.… Expand

If you're after a film that doesn't employ too much thinking and is enjoyable to watch (if you were a fan of the 300 style), I would recommend going to see this. The scenery, visuals, fight scenes were definitely up there with 300, perhaps a little more exaggerated, and gory. Immortals is really awesome, but that's about it. First things first Immortals is not 300. True, it shares some producers and it’s a swords-and-sandals epic packed with tons of visual effects, but that does not mean it’s not its own creation entirely.

Immortals particularly the 3-D version is an ambitious adventure in epic, myth-fueled filmmaking and in visual effects. The R-rated movie, which opens Friday, is prettttty. Problem is, it’s hard to tell if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
Using brilliant strokes, director Tarsem Singh (The Cell) has painted an intricate canvas that combines the world of Zeus and the other Greek gods with that of the grimy, war-ravaged world of mere mortals. From the hyper-realistic deaths by sword to the pristine marble worlds of the heavens above, it’s gorgeous. The tale of Immortals is, well, old. Hundreds of years before the common era, a peasant named Theseus (played by Henry Cavill) is secretly trained by Zeus to be a great warrior. Theseus ends up leading his people in a massive battle against King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke), who is essentially at war with humanity and searching for the magical Epirus Bow to unleash a wave of destruction. The bottom line is that Immortals is a great battle epic well-acted, gorgeously shot, etc. which is cool if you’re into that sort of thing. It’s an interesting take on what can be done with 3-D visual effects: The things done with multidimensional sunbeams and heavenly battles are incredibly cool to look at if you’re into that sort of thing. Also, you get to see the Wrestler beat the pulp out of the next Man of Steel, who, for what it’s worth, is so cut that shots of his abs make the movie appear to be in 4-D. And that’s amazing if you’re into that sort of thing. What you don’t get is anything more than that. Immortals is excellent Friday-night popcorn fare that one day will look brilliant on your 70-inch flatscreen TV. It’s a cool step in the evolution of mythic storytelling with modern effects. Go see it with your friends. But don’t be surprised 10 years from now after many more evolutionary clicks in visual effects, which seem less revolutionary each time when Immortals looks more like 300 than ever.… Expand

TL;DR - Purely on aspects of cinematography, acting and screenplay execution Immortals is a better movie than Clash of the Titans 2010. Unfortunately on aspects of dialogue writing, screenplay writing, direction and pacing it is as bad as Clash of the Titans 2010, perhaps even worse.

Slow Burning, good performances, decent VFX and excellent art direction that keep the first and second act interesting are unable to save the third act of the movie which is where everything just falls apart.

The Good

Cavill, Rourke, John Hurt and Frieda, all turn in good performances as Theseus, King Hyperion, Zeus in Disguise and Oracle Phaedra respectively. Based on whatever material was given to them, they turn in interesting performances but the dialogue writing is another matter altogether which we will get to.
A lot of 300 comparisons but aside from the color grading and Myth based concept very little is similar to the Zach Snyder Epic.

VFX and art direction is where this movie really shines, which is no surprise considering director Tarsem's style and is unique to this movie. The Slow pacing was interesting and intriguing but once you get to the end you realize that it was not a intentional choice but rather something they were forced to do.

The Bad

Not all bad, but unfortunately everything that is bad are one of the important pillars that make a movie good. Even though the screenplay was competently executed, the written screenplay was too short barely coming over the 95 min mark excluding opening and end credits. It feels stretched out for the first three quarters of the movie and you only get this feeling once you complete the movie which is a uniquely bad achievement. Initially the slow pacing feels intentional but after the climax you realize it was trying to deliver a mind over matter experience, but really fails at doing so.

Writing and Direction was probably the worst aspects of the film. There were good performances in the film marred by flat, uninteresting and weightless dialogue for this mythic story with clearly bad direction as the actors perform well yet the scenes fail to have the proper impact.

Sound direction was also something that I found lacking, especially near the climax where Cavill as Theseus is giving a riling speech to soldiers; but the volumes of the whole scene are so off that the speech has no impact whatsoever on the viewer. Sadly this is also the best written piece of dialogue in the movie.

The entire climax is a massive let down, the whole point of Greek Myth is to see Warriors and Armies triumph each other with Intelligence and cunning traps along with pure brute force. There is zero intelligence or tricks for all the climax battles. No traps, no smart human ingenuity that is a must for Ancient Wars, even the whole scene of the Gods fighting the Titans which should have been a spectacle was such a let down. Not sure if there was budget misuse or if there is a lot of movie on the cutting floor but it really chokes whatever this movie could have been.

During the making of this movie it feels as though the director Tarsem, writer duo Charley and Vlas were probably thinking they were making a movie that was going to have Substance over Style, Quality over quantity. Unfortunately they end up doing the exact opposite on all fronts making the movie a visually stunning but largely unsatisfying experience.… Expand

It was decent nothing to special about it boring at times but terrible story telling a few scenes of true exciting action but I think 300 was way better in content and script writing.

As a mythological movie, this is really one of the worst disaster that I have ever seen, the actors seem more sci-fi soldiers than ancient Greeks, and the story is inane and lame, and not based on the real greek mythology.
