"I Love You Phillip Morris" is a heart warm comedy that gives its best to the audience with the funny, usual performance by Jim Carrey and girlish acting by Ian Mcgregor.

I love movies that go for broke, and this one is brave enough to work without a safety net the entire running time. From the first shot to the last shot, it's captivates our attention with how alive it is. I think the screenplay is Oscar-worthy, but I think the performances are actually a little too ahead of their time for the Academy to care about. It's a pretty dark black comedy in terms of thematic elements to get much award attention, but Carrey and McGregor, in roles we had never imagined them to play are in top form here. This movie is razor sharp and dazzling, a dark comedy with a lot of soul underneath. Expand

"I Love You Phillip Morris" had a lot of potential if it hadnt been rushed constantly throughout, but Carreys charm and wit in his performance of the complicated character Stephen Russell can make up a lot of the films flaws.

A terrific movie with excellent acting by Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Has some salty language in it and not appropriate for teens, but otherwise enjoyable and terrific. Jim Carrey shows what a versatile actor he is.

The severity of punishment under the US justice system is astounding! Kudos to both Carrey and McGregor for their realistic portrayals of gay men that does not go to the stereotype. Expand

Pleasantly surprised.

Granted the role of Steven Russell(Jim Carrey) was totally over-the top, but well... the source IS over the top. He's well.... let's be honest, crazy. Not a sociopath or psychopath, but... kind of amoral, and manic.

I'm not one to beat the retarded drum of the over-hyped manic-depressive mantra (hmm... some people have extremes of emotion, what a shock! We ARE a diversity.) Anyway, what hit home with me most, only because I've met crazy people in positions of... well if not authority, leadership... They just feel crazy and wrong, and yet everyone around goes along with it. I've seen this in RL a few times. So, this movie kind of connected with me at that level, the understanding that most humans are emotionally stupid.... and have horrible gut impressions, which are totally wrong.

Could Steven have sucked me in for a day... prolly. For a week, prolly not. I have a way of stumbling out of delusion, maybe it's genetic -- i don't know. I'm not a follower, so can only take bs so long before my brain revolts.

Anyway, decent flik... def entertaining, worth watching.

DO NOT EMULATE!

So the opening scene of the movie would be a bit of a put off for anyone who saw his attempts. But this movie is a huge surprise in every way...the story itself is surprising, the character, the love story and the fact that its one of Jim's best performances. Altough McGregor is great its Jim that steals the show. The influence from Bad Santa is also apparent this one having jokes on every corner. Altough the serious moments are not best handled rest assured that the comedy is. Expand

Just as the film’s protagonist, I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS is passionate to the very end. Full of emotion and an occasional laugh, Jim Carrey gives an unusual look at an astonishing entrepreneur and frequent prison inmate in love.

Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor are absolutely brilliant in this film as lovers. Together, they have a truly irresistible chemistry and their love story feels truly authentic here as both actors truly begin to embody their characters. The film's emotional high notes are entirely heartbreaking and watching Steven Russell destroy both his life and that of the man he loves, can be truly hard to watch, though ever entertaining given the comedic approach to the film. Overall, I Love You Phillip Morris has pretty indistinct direction and is not nearly as funny as it thinks it is, but all of this is alright in my book due to its highs. Those highs being the strong emotion in the film and the brilliant acting of Carrey and McGregor. Together, these two create pure movie magic. Expand

This film got an entertaining story about a couple in love, and their need for love and freedom.

This is a funny film. Jim Carrey as Steven Russell is the best with I Love You Phillip Morris. The acting is so phenomenal. The romance between the two main characters are superb, I love it. The script is well adapted for the romance and at the same time is it highly entertaining. I wouldn’t define this comedy film as boring, not by a long shot. It’s **** awesome!

This is a flawless film that got great comedy.

I Love You Phillip Morris gets an 8/10.

The first statement still holds true, but I must redact the second, as I had completely forgotten about this movie.

The story follows Steven Jay Russell (Jim Carrey), who lives a seemingly cookie-cutter life as a church organ-playing police officer in the cookie-cutter town of Virginia Beach, complete with with a beautiful family: wife Debbie (Leslie Mann) and a daughter named Stephanie who we see for all of five minutes in the movie. Yet everything is not as well as it seems, because Steven struggles with two key pieces of his identity; the first is that he's adopted, and when he finally manages to track down his mother her rejection prompts him to quit the police force and move to Texas, and the second is that, well...He's gay (we learn this in a completely unexpected moment that will both amuse and possibly disgust). Following a near-fatal car crash, he reveals this to his family and moves yet again to Florida where he lives a high-end lifestyle with a Hispanic boyfriend (Rodrigo Santoro). One problem, though, as Steven puts it: "Being gay is really expensive." So he resorts to stealing and pulling scams in order to fund the life that he wants, and when he's eventually caught he tries to avoid prison by first attempting suicide (which fails miserably) and then attempting an escape (which fails even more miserably). In prison, however, he meets the man of his dreams: sweetly naive country boy Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor), and the misadventures that follow are make for endless laughs.

Though the story features two homosexual characters rather than a more conventional rom-com relationship, the poignant messages of love and dedication are still just as powerful, as everything Steven does (even the illegal things) he does to provide his partners with the life he thinks they want/deserve. He is constantly changing his identity to suit whatever the current situation demands (in the course of the movie he's a cop, a fruit salesman, a lawyer, Chief Financial Officer for a large medical supply company, etc.), and seems confused about who he is when we first meet him, which gives a lot of room for character growth and development that certainly happens throughout the movie, especially once he meets Phillip.

Carrey also narrates the movie from a first-person point of view, which makes for interesting and (oftentimes) hilarious tone juxtaposing whenever what he describes is opposite what is happening on the screen (i.e., when his "Jim Dandy" plan to avoid prison is to overdose on pills). There are plenty of sight gags in the movie, but unlike the ones reheated and recycled over and over again by the likes of Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, etc. (the list goes on and on), these ones are a bit more clever with an air of wit about them, and are oftentimes very funny (such as Steven attempting to jump from the roof of the hospital into a dumpster to avoid capture, before the camera pans over the edge to reveal he hit the street instead).

The cast is absolutely fantastic, and the two stars bring their A-game to the title role and the man after his heart. Carrey plays his con-man with such a convincing charm that you can't help believing everything he says (even if it isn't true), while McGregor, in addition to nailing his Southern accent, brings a vulnerability and naivety to Phillip that many of us have felt when we are in love. The relatability of these characters is perhaps the most endearing thing about them; Carrey, as Steven, represents human desires, in that he lies to Phillip and goes out of his way to impress and care for him, while Phillip represents our inhibitions, the side of us that wishes to open up but is afraid to do so until we know for sure we've met the right person (word to the wise, though: the person we believe to be "the one" isn't always automatically).

Overall, a sweet, delightfully offbeat rom-com makes for one of the better productions to have come from Luc Besson's Europacorp in recent years, as well as a deliriously funny "true" story you'll be watching over and over again. Just don't expect to find love so easily if you ever wind up in prison. 8/10
