What a waste of time !
Full of plot hole. Multiple time, the protagonist is utilizing of deus ex machina to escape and decieve. The law is absolutely stupid, the bad guys are even more stupider. The only satisfaction in this movie is the end.

Not likeable characters, everybody s a bad person here, the cameras and actors do a good job, but the script doesn't sell the protagonist as someone who we should side, Frank is the only character that I did like.

The one that caught my eye was I Care A Lot. On first glance, I thought I wouldn't want to watch this, but the trailer pulled me in pretty hard. Check it out below. Either way, I Care A Lot is about a ruthless businesswoman, Marla Grayson played by Rosamund Pike, who has figured out a scheme of being appointed as legal guardian for dozens of elderly wards. Grayson uses her position as a way to seize the wards' assets and cunningly use the legal system to her benefit. All is well until Marla and her business-partner and lover, Fran, take on the wrong ward who has some powerful friends. From here, we have to watch Marla figure out her next move to stay in control. Let's see how this turned out

For the most part, I Care A Lot is a standard dark comedy with a twist. Rosamund Pike plays Marla with a cold precision that's necessary for such a prickly character. She wears the power suits and has a blunt haircut that lets you know that she's all business. She does whatever it takes to get her way and line her pockets. There aren't really any redeeming qualities. Pike seems to revel in playing this character and she's quite good. There are funny moments because hijinks do ensue especially with Peter Dinklage's character and his slick lawyer played by Chris Messina get in the mix. The film moves at a good clip and is never boring, but may be frustrating for some if you don't buy into what Marla is selling. The problem is that it becomes disjointed as the plot machinations take over and the movie begins to search for a way to wrap up. It feels like storylines and side characters get dropped because there has to be an ending and Marla's motivations aren't really explained - if you even need that.

Trip: Let me interject! I, too, watched I Care A Lot, and it sounds to me like you are generally favorable on the movie. While I think the movie hits all of its marks for something promoted as a dark comedy and crime thriller, I struggle with how morally questionable the main character is and the fact that the movie asks the audience to sympathize with her. Ultimately, I could not get beyond disliking this woman so intensely for taking advantage of the legal system, but more importantly, taking advantage of innocent, elderly people some of whom may not even need guardians. I had such disgust for Marla Grayson most of the movie that I could not enjoy it. Yes, there is something to a character, who is a ruthless, capitalist and she's using the system to win at all costs, but she blithely hurting people who do not deserve it. I really don't like her and it makes me dislike this movie.

S2S: Sorry, you feel that way, Trip. I know a good therapist for you. You okay?

S2S: Well... Yes, overall, I enjoyed this movie but I'm conflicted on liking the main character, too, but I guess that's the point. One might say Rosamund did too good of an acting job. I can't tell if that's good or bad in this flick. Judging by Trip's overreaction I can only tell this point is supremely highlighted and intrigues me more.

Long story Short, I Care A Lot is an interesting movie that was fun to watch, in a way. If you like to root for the bad guy, then this is a movie for you. I Care A Lot is led by two solid actors in Dinklage and Pike, but the story felt heartless and devoid of soul. Grab a bowl of popcorn and enjoy this devilish feature.… Expand

Personally, I do not see how people find this film about female empowerment, seeing how if it hadn't been for Peter Dinklage and that one lawyer guy, she never would have been as successful in the end. I give the people behind this film credit for being able to make an unlikable main character (not a protagonist since she has no character growth or change in this film), but they somewhat push it. Personally, I feel she deserved everything that happened to her, seeing how she couldn't swallow her pride and greed and give up before things went south. If you see this as empowerment, more to you. I just don't see this as anything besides a mediocre film with terrible character writing.… Expand

Difficult to like this story about systemic elderly abuse and its manipulators. In that context, the story is fast paced with superb actors giving believable performances. It ticks all the boxes with emotion, action, love & hate.

It is a shame that after a powerful and fast-paced start on the interesting (little known) theme of the official guardianship of the elderly and its abuses, the story experiences a gender shift that subjects its protagonist to a series of unbelievable incidents (which some will still enjoy). For this reason, the promising character of Rosamund Pike ends up becoming a stereotype lacking in depth and with little credible decisions, even for a genre film, and that ends up trivializing what it represents.

Best: Dianne Wiest's acting and character.

Review

Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike) has set up a system of medical and judicial contacts and a company to obtain legal and official guardianship of elderly people without relatives who are declared incapable and thus be able to manage their assets to pay for their geriatric hospitalization and stay with the rest. But her oiled state-backed plundering mechanism will encounter unexpected complications when she takes it over as Jennifer Peterson's (Dianne Wiest) tutor.

J Blakeson's film has a powerful and promising beginning, as it informs us of a little-known legal procedure regarding the intervention of the state in the face of unprotected elderly people and does so with harshness, good rhythm and a certain tone of black comedy .

Serious problems arise (for the protagonist, but also for the film) when characters from Peterson's environment appear on the scene, producing a narrative twist that takes the story to the terrain of the mobster thriller. It is in this long segment where the initial problem is lost sight of (almost reduced to an excuse) and the story begins to accumulate incoherencies and implausibilities that make what happens very little credible, even within the conventions of a genre film.

Also because of this, the unscrupulous villain of Pike ends up consolidating a stereotypical character, lacking in depth, with little credible decisions. And that she banalizes what she represents.

The best of the film are the interventions of Dianne Wiest and her duel with the character of Marla.

Es una pena que luego de un comienzo potente y con buen ritmo sobre la interesante temática (poco conocida) de la tutela oficial de ancianos y sus abusos, el relato experimente un viraje de género que somete a su protagonista a una serie de peripecias poco creíbles (que algunos igualmente disfrutarán). Por esta razón, el prometedor personaje de Rosamund Pike termina convertido en un estereotipo carente de profundidad y con decisiones poco creíbles, aún para una película de género, y que termina banalizando lo que representa.

Lo mejor: la actuación y el personaje de Dianne Wiest.

Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike) ha montado un sistema de contactos médicos y judiciales y una empresa para conseguir por vía legal y oficial la tutela de ancianos sin familiares que son declarados incapaces y de ese modo poder administrar sus bienes para solventar su internación geriátrica y quedarse con el resto. Pero su aceitado mecanismo de expoliación avalado por el Estado encontrará inesperadas complicaciones cuando se haga cargo como tutora de Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest).

La película de J Blakeson tiene un comienzo potente y prometedor, ya que nos pone en conocimiento de un procedimiento legal poco conocido en cuanto a la intervención del estado frente a la ancianidad desprotegida y lo hace con dureza, buen ritmo y cierto tono de comedia negra.

Los problemas serios surgen (para la protagonista, pero también para la película) cuando aparecen en escena personajes del entorno de Peterson que producen un viraje narrativo que lleva el relato al terreno del thriller de mafiosos. Es en este largo segmento donde se pierde de vista la problemática inicial (casi reducida a una excusa) y la historia comienza a acumular incoherencias e inverosimilitudes que tornan muy poco creíble lo que sucede, aún dentro de las convenciones de una película de género.

One of the most morally vacant movies I’ve had the misfortune to watch in a very long time. The characters are shallow, stupid, and cruel. What’s worse is that they are continually rewarded for it. Not only does that not happen but they try to make you sympathetic to people who imprison and drug helpless elderly people. And i love Peter Dinklage but this ending was worse than Game of Thrones. The most unsatisfying, depressing, illogical waste of time I've had in awhile.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the standout for me is Diane West. loved her nuanced acting with very light touches of sinister hints. rosamund is delightful and i love her wide ranging portrayal. this must b a real challenge, kissing a woman this time. though nothing beats mutilating her prey in 'gone girl'. what i loved is the poetic justice that ended the show. nobody can touch her but a real 'loser' Zach Galifianakis character. she even could out maneuver a russian mobster......… Expand

Like other users have said, there is a strong promising start in the first half of the movie, but subversion after subversion of conventional expectations of plot and twist after twist gave me the same feeling as if I were to watch an inexperienced friend on grill duty at a Sunday barbecue flip the patties every 2 seconds ad infinitum, leaving me with nothing but feelings of horror, disgust and overbearing anticipation of the gross taste that the final result will leave in my mouth.

Funnily enough, as per the titular prophecy offered by the film, I was spurred to action purely out of the pure distaste with this viewing experience which I was left with. It is saddening that I have wasted a few hours of my life on this film, even more so is the fact that there were many more, hundredfold hours spent and wasted on this production. Can't complain about the acting, though. It was good.… Expand

When Pike dies at the the hands of a grieving son I understand the irony, but after spectacularly avoiding the russian mob for the entire movie it is just a stupid way for the movie to end. The best thing about the ending is it make it impossible to write a sequel. The holes in this movies plot are numerous. Suspension of disbelief is called for at the level of for marvel movies.… Expand

Very clear the director was the screenwriter, I couldn't imagine pitching cut scenes of spin classes, or the time invested having dental work done. They are the worst gang that ever existed. They people are brain-dead. The main character's got caught by Hitman and it should be the end of the film. Hitman can't even wait to see if the main girl is actually dead. They were not under time pressure they could easily wait. If you want to see the classics about villains stupidity then this film is for you. And the ending is actually the worst thing if they just escaped I would give it 4 at best but it continues. They went after the mafiioso when they could escape with diamons. They would live with cash and start again! But no they went after him and they actually won xD. Like how is this possible. They don't have any self preservation instinct's. I don't even remember the names of the characters because they are so forgettable. I lived through it because I wanted them dead. At least the main character died at the end becouse of the guy from the start of the film. THANK YOU FOR THE FIRST GOOD MOMENT THAT ACTUALLY REDEAMS THIS thanks to that moment I gave this film a 1 instead of 0… Expand

I have never nor do i think i will ever again leave a review for a movie.But my oh my this film sucks, i could write a lot about how or why does this film sucks so much so so much but i wont, i will only say this.The film was trying to shove matriarchal superiority of women down your throat for 2 hours straight, the vilain didnt get punished for their crimes and we didnt enjoy it, you will maybe say but thats life?But no thats not life the plot armor around the villain was so strong that there was not an inch of realism produced, the vilain could do anything be anywhere and win in every battle because of the plot armor the women supermacists producers of this film wanted.Most disgusting movie i have ever seen in my life.The vilain should be punished with the most horrible way and we should enjoy it, to at least take something of these 2 hours wasted just for these CLOWNS to try to portray women as something the invincible.I have no opinion about the matter but i will say this to all the producers of films like these ones.LAW.LAW is what saves you and the more you try to shove down our throat your new world order the more the law declines, until the day you see what you are WITHOUT!! the law.Okay bye bye now keep making those disgusting films.… Expand
