A work of art.
Yeah there's going to be a lot of people infuriated with the "protagonist's" target, but what do you expect? A moral gangster and a regretful shark?
No, this is gritty and dark and decent story-telling. Not too heavy, either.

Excellent little thriller. You come for Rosamund Pike, and you stay for the amazing story. Though it's a little harsh, you must stay through the last moments...

Once she has them under her financial control in a care facility, she cashes in on all their assets. The scheme is netting her plenty, until she targets the wrong woman (Dianne Wiest). Then the surprises begin! Once things get going, it’s not clear who’s bad and who’s good, but that’s part of the film’s charming wickedness. Pike is wonderfully slick and evil, Wiest is delicious and Peter Dinklage revels in his over-the-top character. Writer/director J Blakeson has crafted a script that keeps topping itself with skillful surprises. His direction makes every scene slick fun. I'm surprised at all the negative reviews from users on here, the film was meant to be cause viewers to despise both main characters, and it succeeded. Rosamund Pike is excellent as Marla, in what feels like the unofficial sequel to "Gone Girl".

Wow!! this is spooky! There are over 300 User Reviews for a movie that very few people know exist. Almost no movie gets that many User Reviews - especially one that almost nobody has heard of.
I just read through the User Reviews for this movie.
The guardianship industry has hopped on to Metacritic with an unbelievable number of "sock puppets" to downgrade this movie.
It is very, very important that everyone understand that this movie has pulled the veil from a very, very corrupt guardianship industry. There are thousands of lawyers, judges, doctors, guardians, elder care professional, etc, etc that make billions and billions of dollars ripping off old people.
******************************************************************
Below is my original review before I realized that the corrupt guardianship industry has taken over the User Reviews for this movie.
******************************************************************
The guardianship industry has gotten completely out of control - so, a movie about it was inevitable. The plot is reasonably interesting. The acting is very good.

If you are unfamiliar with guardianship, you absolutely should watch this movie. It is an entertaining way to prepare yourself for the possibility that you may find yourself entangled in a guardianship nightmare. Do not imagine it can't happen to you.
By the way... apparently almost all of the people who wrote a User Review did not see the last 8 minutes of the movie - and, the last 8 minutes of the movie is important.

You will hardly let out any giggles during the projection. In fact, most of the time, the film causes much more disgust. Not exactly a comedy. However, the agile direction, the pop language and the cartoon characters are traits of comedy as a genre and, therefore, distance the film from the drama. However, the chases, tortures and action sequences suggest the thriller's place. But how can I say that this production is just a thriller, if there are so many comic and dramatic elements? Expand

She eventually targets the wrong person, and her pursuits lead to an interesting cat-and-mouse game versus the crime lord Roman Lunyov (Peter Dinklage). The film feels like it took a lot of inspiration from the TV show American Greed, which is CNBC's shocking true crime series that examines the dark side of the American Dream.

The film overall is quite engaging and the plot is sure to keep you thoroughly captivated with its interesting twists and turns. Rosamund Pike wonderfully plays another vicious, cunning character similar to her past work in Gone Girl (2014), and as a viewer, you may either really hate her or respect her hustle, but no matter what she does a great job at leading the show with her skills. Peter Dinklage, who although shows his continual tact and range as an actor in the film, I felt that his character was written in such a way that seems too unrealistic for a ruthless leader of a criminal organization. This goes for all characters in the film related to the criminal organization since they come off as rather weak.

The story is rooted in exploring the lives of people with no morals, so if you can't get past that behavior, then I'd say do not watch this movie, but if you don't mind seeing a ruthless scammer at work and a crime boss coming after her, then be prepared for an entertaining watch, where you always want to know what will happen next.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The best part of I Care A Lot is when Marla gets murdered. Finally, an event she can’t undo and retaliate ten times worse because she’s already dead. If your fond of movies where the heroine is a villain who’s just as narcissistic as she is selfish then this is the movie for you. Honestly, it’s a great plot because you feel so deeply for the character and I really hate Marla very deeply. It’s a great movie but ding dong the witch is dead still sings in my heart at the end. After seeing the wild variation in reviews here, I just had to add my two cents. Because these reviews are the reason why production companies are sometimes hesitant on taking risks on interesting ideas.

Let me start by clarifying a couple of things:

1. Absolutely nobody that made this movie is trying to get you to root for the villainous main character just because she's a lesbian female.

2. Yes the characters are completely unlikeable - and that's entirely the point. This is essentially a revenge flick that views American capitalism for what it is - a playground in which most of the spoils go to those who are willing to trample on as many lives as possible to get to the top.

I Care A Lot was fun to watch from start to finish - it's vicious, very well written, and campy enough that my eyes were glued to the screen the entire time despite the lack of any likeable characters. This movie works in spite of that because characters don't NEED to be likeable! They just need to be interesting. And this movie has interesting characters in spades.

If there's anything I could fault here, it's that the movie gets a little... ehh... distracted around the middle? Without spoiling anything, there's a half hour chunk of the movie where it pivots from something sort of Kill Bill-ish to something sort of Tom and Jerry-ish. It's wild and entertaining - I certainly wasn't bored - but it doesn't really add much to the movie other than an extra required suspension of disbelief, which the movie was already a bit aggressive with at times. But overall - this is an entertaining, wild, mean, witty, and suspenseful, albeit somewhat unfocused, ride that I would recommend to anybody that prefers their movies a little less formulaic/predictable.

When the owner of a shifty legal guardianship agency adept at fleecing wealthy seniors afflicted with mental health issues meets her match in an equally crafty nemesis with nefarious connections, a war of wits breaks out for domination and control of the situation, regardless of who might get hurt in the process. While the film starts to go off the rails somewhat in the second half, its wicked humor makes clear the ruthlessness inherent in the practices of this economic system, both on a personal and a global geopolitical scale. What makes the film, though, are its superb performances, especially those of Rosamund Pike, Dianne Wiest and Peter Dinklage. Some may find the content and message of this offering troubling, but that's simply the movie doing its job. It stresses the need for us to shed our Pollyanna attitudes, no matter how disillusioning that might be. Indeed, it reminds us of the old adage that it's easier to fool people than to convince them that they've been fooled. Expand

The epitome of capitalism runs amok, bulldozing over the shattered remains of extended families. I had no idea the insidious legal mechanism of guardianship was able to so easily rob elders of their freedoms and imprison them, to be bled until death. It is quite rare that I have wished karma so strongly upon a villain, and the film almost robbed me of the satisfaction until the big payoff. At the very least, the dignity to grow old with freedom should be a human right. I wonder how deep this exploitation goes today, in the US and across the world. The film should be credited for shining light on a very dark corner of society and the legal system. Expand

The one that caught my eye was I Care A Lot. On first glance, I thought I wouldn't want to watch this, but the trailer pulled me in pretty hard. Check it out below. Either way, I Care A Lot is about a ruthless businesswoman, Marla Grayson played by Rosamund Pike, who has figured out a scheme of being appointed as legal guardian for dozens of elderly wards. Grayson uses her position as a way to seize the wards' assets and cunningly use the legal system to her benefit. All is well until Marla and her business-partner and lover, Fran, take on the wrong ward who has some powerful friends. From here, we have to watch Marla figure out her next move to stay in control. Let's see how this turned out

For the most part, I Care A Lot is a standard dark comedy with a twist. Rosamund Pike plays Marla with a cold precision that's necessary for such a prickly character. She wears the power suits and has a blunt haircut that lets you know that she's all business. She does whatever it takes to get her way and line her pockets. There aren't really any redeeming qualities. Pike seems to revel in playing this character and she's quite good. There are funny moments because hijinks do ensue especially with Peter Dinklage's character and his slick lawyer played by Chris Messina get in the mix. The film moves at a good clip and is never boring, but may be frustrating for some if you don't buy into what Marla is selling. The problem is that it becomes disjointed as the plot machinations take over and the movie begins to search for a way to wrap up. It feels like storylines and side characters get dropped because there has to be an ending and Marla's motivations aren't really explained - if you even need that.

Trip: Let me interject! I, too, watched I Care A Lot, and it sounds to me like you are generally favorable on the movie. While I think the movie hits all of its marks for something promoted as a dark comedy and crime thriller, I struggle with how morally questionable the main character is and the fact that the movie asks the audience to sympathize with her. Ultimately, I could not get beyond disliking this woman so intensely for taking advantage of the legal system, but more importantly, taking advantage of innocent, elderly people some of whom may not even need guardians. I had such disgust for Marla Grayson most of the movie that I could not enjoy it. Yes, there is something to a character, who is a ruthless, capitalist and she's using the system to win at all costs, but she blithely hurting people who do not deserve it. I really don't like her and it makes me dislike this movie.

S2S: Sorry, you feel that way, Trip. I know a good therapist for you. You okay?

Trip: ...

S2S: Well... Yes, overall, I enjoyed this movie but I'm conflicted on liking the main character, too, but I guess that's the point. One might say Rosamund did too good of an acting job. I can't tell if that's good or bad in this flick. Judging by Trip's overreaction I can only tell this point is supremely highlighted and intrigues me more.

Long story Short, I Care A Lot is an interesting movie that was fun to watch, in a way. If you like to root for the bad guy, then this is a movie for you. I Care A Lot is led by two solid actors in Dinklage and Pike, but the story felt heartless and devoid of soul. Grab a bowl of popcorn and enjoy this devilish feature.

Abstract

It is a shame that after a powerful and fast-paced start on the interesting (little known) theme of the official guardianship of the elderly and its abuses, the story experiences a gender shift that subjects its protagonist to a series of unbelievable incidents (which some will still enjoy). For this reason, the promising character of Rosamund Pike ends up becoming a stereotype lacking in depth and with little credible decisions, even for a genre film, and that ends up trivializing what it represents.

Best: Dianne Wiest's acting and character.

Review

Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike) has set up a system of medical and judicial contacts and a company to obtain legal and official guardianship of elderly people without relatives who are declared incapable and thus be able to manage their assets to pay for their geriatric hospitalization and stay with the rest. But her oiled state-backed plundering mechanism will encounter unexpected complications when she takes it over as Jennifer Peterson's (Dianne Wiest) tutor.

J Blakeson's film has a powerful and promising beginning, as it informs us of a little-known legal procedure regarding the intervention of the state in the face of unprotected elderly people and does so with harshness, good rhythm and a certain tone of black comedy .

Serious problems arise (for the protagonist, but also for the film) when characters from Peterson's environment appear on the scene, producing a narrative twist that takes the story to the terrain of the mobster thriller. It is in this long segment where the initial problem is lost sight of (almost reduced to an excuse) and the story begins to accumulate incoherencies and implausibilities that make what happens very little credible, even within the conventions of a genre film.

Also because of this, the unscrupulous villain of Pike ends up consolidating a stereotypical character, lacking in depth, with little credible decisions. And that she banalizes what she represents.

The best of the film are the interventions of Dianne Wiest and her duel with the character of Marla.

Abstract Español

There was absolutely nothing likeable about Marla and Frankie. The movie caused anger while watching Marla and her evil corruptness. I wanted her and Frankie to die so much throughout the entire movie. I was happy to see the end. Marla got what she deserved. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first half (up until the rescue) was amazing, great and unique topic, awesome casting. I especially loved the music. BUT the second half is just silly and boring, who am I even rooting for? The abuser or the mafia? Not the mention that it does astonishingly poor job (and I mean really weak) at convincing me about the mafia being powerful or scary, quite the contrary, just a bunch of clumsy clowns, no strength at all. Also our protagonist gets out from every single situation, but how?

I feel like the goal with this was to appeal to the poor people who are angry at the rich but completely ducks up with this heartless elder abuse. The whole thing just falls apart, I would give 7-8 to the first half but 3 to second one.

Shame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was actually really into this movie up until about the 1 hour mark. Then the movie takes a completely different direction than what you expect. In the end, you’re left extremely disappointed because the main villain in the movie becomes the “hero” and she never gets what she deserves. She’s a horrible person that takes advantage of old people and steals their entire life’s savings. In the end, she doesn’t receive any kind of Karma, instead she creates a massive Empire of doing what she’s always done, only now she’s scamming and stealing from way more people. I see what they were going for in this movie; they tried really hard to subvert expectations and give you something that you didn’t expect. Sorry to say, this kind of writing isn’t a good way to do it. Don’t waste your time... Expand

I also found the message of the movie confusing, because it has that empowering feel to it, like a "girl boss moment!", even though they are either doing awful things and how none of it was earned, which rubbed me the wrong way. It sends out the wrong message that doing terrible things or destroying other people’s lives (not just the bad guys) is OK, I guess.

It also doesn't help this was written by a dude named J Blakeson, a dreadful screenwriter who's previous writing credit was the unnecessary sequel to 'The Descent'. So yeah, this wasn't in good hands at the start.

This is honestly the most annoying movie experience I've had in a while. So shallow and empty.

Just watch 'Promising Young Woman' instead.

I give the people behind this film credit for being able to make an unlikable main character (not a protagonist since she has no character growth or change in this film), but they somewhat push it. Personally, I feel she deserved everything that happened to her, seeing how she couldn't swallow her pride and greed and give up before things went south. If you see this as empowerment, more to you. I just don't see this as anything besides a mediocre film with terrible character writing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are a rare few movies I’ve seen ruined in the last 15 minutes. As I started watching this movie, I looked at these reviews since I saw such a difference between the user and professional scores . The low rating user reviews talked about how thing that happened were stupid and unlikely but I decided eh I’ll watch it through see if they’re right. Up until the last 15 or so minutes I was fine with the movie. Sure the main character surviving the car drowning or even her girlfriend not dying from the gas didn’t make since but I could deal they were unlikely but I still assumed the ending would be ok. So I keep watching and get to them going to the drivers house and I get slightly annoyed at how something makes since with one him not hearing the phone hit the ground but that ok it’s a slight thing i could explain it away. Then they’re able to follow the driver of a mod boss with ties to the Russian mafia without the guy realizing he’s getting tailed, now that’s what really started tanking my thoughts of the movie. I had the movie at a 9 in my head at the start. It had great writing a cool use let’s see this **** up person get killed by another one cool. Then after that driver scene combined with the other **** it went down to a 6 for me not great but ok then the very last few scenes happened. So you mean to tell me that a mod boss has a driver and body guard incompetent enough to be tased as well as a zero no cameras or other body guards. Oh then next you’re telling me a two girls that do guardianship have easy access to drugs that will knock you out as well as ones strong enough to cause a near overdoses in a person. Then the fact that this mob boss decides to work with a woman who nearly kills him, stole his mother’s money and freedom, and stole his millions in diamonds. The only reason my rating is this high is because I really enjoyed the beginning half of the movie otherwise I’d be siting pretty at 0 Expand

In the first hour, I really care a lot about elders and decided to get married then have a very big family in the future but thing get worse in an unrealistic way that I have never seen before. There's ton of better ways to end the movie but they choose the worst one.
The protagonist was acting actually good. Her girl friend Fran is cool but unnecessary, just exists to show that the protagonist is lesbian.
The most nonsense thing I'm still wondering is the tooth, the serious scene that she keeps it in the milk just to recover her teeth later. Does it have any goal beyond my knowledge or it just a dental tip I should remember in case a Mafia guy slap in my face???

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I find it difficult to understand what this movie wants. At the beginning we are introduced into a life-destroying kind of scam perpetrated by a small group of greedy people led by a coldhearted sociopathic guardian (impressively portrayed by Rosamund Pike). If you are not a sociopath yourself, this part will make you angry (and make you wonder after a while why this is labeled a comedy). But then we watch how the lead couple after picking the wrong target (great: Dianne Wiest) defends itself against a Russian mobster played by Peter Dinklage. This doesn't work on an emotional level because the main characters are so disgusting. The only warm emotions can be found between the mobster and his mother, and the guardian and her lover - and it both cases most viewers won't get involved. And it gets worse: From the very beginning the movie wants you to believe that is much more than it really is, namely a deep analysis of modern American society. Its catering to a very dumb version of a left world view - which obviously some critics find convincing :-) The end is especially telling: The movie is not brave enough to end with her climbing to the top of the society. To comfort those poor souls who have a sense of justice she gets - well, what could take her down? Drawing on real stories we would say: a police investigation, investigative journalism, a traitor from within, or a trial. But as the message of this simple minded movie is 'if you have money, they cannot harm you' these won't do. So it is the lonely disenfranchised killer who brings 'justice', basically confirming an analysis which is the basis for all the stupid conspiracy theories one can find. This movie is labeled by Netflix as a LGBTQ. Probably because the main couple are lesbians. But while this can be important to win our emotions when the world is trying to keep them apart because they are lesbians, here it is just a random fact. Or because most men with the exception of the mob boss are depicted as mean, greasy or stupid. Again, this movie is supporting the most simple and primitive prejudices. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like Rosamund Pike since The World's End and I was really looking forward to this movie. Unfortunately it turned out rather uninteresting and predictable. And starting with the scene of "assault" at the elderly home it turned into some kind of fantastic comedy with giant plotholes. I started skipping portions after the interrogation scene.

As a Russian, it was also funny to see Russians portrayed as tracksuit-wearing blondes without a hint of Russian accent. Oleg from 2 Broke Girls would make a more believable Russian. Peter Dinklage is excellent, providing that his objective was to portray an incompetent moron, who constantly angrily bangs at various surfaces. I guess anyone can become a drug kingpin this days, even if you get outplayed at your game by some middle-level legal authority. Pike is good at portraying her character, but I've already seen that character in Gone Girl. Overall I don't know what the creators were going for and what's the message of this film. Also, JClay Davis didn't say SHIIIIIIEEEEET in this one. Music is good though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So this movie starts off rather promising, but quickly devolves into some sort of action thriller that immediately falls apart and never comes back. It could've been an okay dumb movie, but unfortunately it is something far worse - a terrible serious movie.

First of all - whoever wrote this doesn't know the difference between villains and anti-heroes. Even movies based around monsters know how to work around this by having a protagonist or at least someone likeable - the core of this movie is nihilistic, in that everybody is awful. Okay - but then why are you trying to make heroines out of the two monsters the movie revolves around? Actions scenes trigger sound queues to make us realize this should feel like a triumph towards a character we feel nothing but contempt for.

Peter Dinklage is great, but poor casting for a formidable, violent criminal - not because of his stature - because of his demeanor. Rosamund Pike is as great as always, but she has to work around a trashy script that tries to backflip and ends up breaking its own neck. No character arcs, no redemption, no folly. And then comes the ending - nonsensical schlock, where both the crimelord and the litigation parasite join forces, and then out of nowhere she gets murdered. Why? Well, clearly because they had finished the movie, but test audiences hated it, so they tacked on a scene that undoes the bad ending.

It's... it's a giant mess, really. The first act is promising, if a bit too dark, and then it all just goes to hell, and suddenly thugs and mobsters are complete incompetent clowns incapable of taking down a single guard at a home for the elderly or offing an unconscious person, while our evil legal guardian Jason Bournes the crap out of armed goons using tasers. It's just so improbable and moronic.

This movie completely falls apart at the script level, unfortunately. It's well shot, okay direction, great lighting, great soundtrack, and is somewhat well paced. But the writing of the characters, plot arcs, story and some of the dialogues are just so damn bad, I wouldn't hesitate to call it The Worst. At least if it were a little more hammy and a little less dour, it would've made for a fun romp - but unfortunately it is just too damn serious about itself to be this poorly written.

Not only does that not happen but they try to make you sympathetic to people who imprison and drug helpless elderly people. And i love Peter Dinklage but this ending was worse than Game of Thrones. The most unsatisfying, depressing, illogical waste of time I've had in awhile. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. plot twists are as unnatural as it gets, the Russian Mafia would delete her in a matter of minutes. She has clearly established her network as fraudulent as you can imagine and, I think a Mafia lawyer can easily change the court or even establish a line of evidence. Expand

Awful movie. Tries to endear itself with girl power, but even if you like that sort of thing, it's done in a completely unoriginal ND cringy way. Concept was OK. Plot and execution was clumsy and boring. Just awful.

O diretor subestima a inteligência do expectador...

This movie has a great beginning, mediocre middle and absurd and horrible ending.
On first 20-30 mins I thought that I have found such a great movie and I was going to post it on Facebook, Instagram... wherever. I'm so happy I didn't do it right away and finished the whole movie first.
Right on the half of the movie the scenario goes down hill, plot gets corrupted with huge holes and a number of "convenient coincidents" which are used to fly main characters straight to their aims despite all logic and common sense.
Fair to say that all actors made really good job, I cannot think of anybody acting poor, but the scenario is just a pile of trash, honestly.

This film has no idea what it wants to be and sometimes that can work... This isn't one of those times. A scattered piecework of cynical characters coming together over a central plot or theme should usually amount to a decently told story. This film has no idea what it wants to be and sometimes that can work... This isn't one of those times. A scattered piecework of cynical characters coming together over a central plot or theme should usually amount to a decently told story. The Wolf of Wall Street did this nihilistic depiction of American capitalism much better. The most interesting thing about this film is just how it garnered so much buzz. Expand

What a waste of time !
Full of plot hole. Multiple time, the protagonist is utilizing of deus ex machina to escape and decieve. The law is absolutely stupid, the bad guys are even more stupider. The only satisfaction in this movie is the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The main character says that she is going to win, and she does just that. The movie forgets that she is the bad guy until the last possible minute just for the random guy at the beginning to shoot her dead in the street. She dies happy, rich, and in the arms of her lover, so the pay off is not at all worth it.

Also for someone who's job it is to take care of the elderly, she's really good at taking out Russian mobsters. Yes someone in the writers room actually wrote that as a plot point for her. Dont waste your time.

Really awful... I love Peter Dinklage, but he owes me a drink for sitting through that.

Being a lesbian doesn't somehow vindicate the moral bankruptcy of grifting the elderly.

Poor character development, awful story, and an abysmal ending = 1/10.

Pure garbage. The "main character" displayed like Rambo or terminator you choose. The plot and the writing are laughable. The user rating speaks for itself
