Film had a good start and I loved Peter Dinklage in it. The ending and many plot holes throughout it ultimately lead the movie to being cheesy and absurd through multiple moments. At the beginning we are introduced into a life-destroying kind of scam perpetrated by a small group of greedy people led by a coldhearted sociopathic guardian (impressively portrayed by Rosamund Pike). If you are not a sociopath yourself, this part will make you angry (and make you wonder after a while why this is labeled a comedy). But then we watch how the lead couple after picking the wrong target (great: Dianne Wiest) defends itself against a Russian mobster played by Peter Dinklage. This doesn't work on an emotional level because the main characters are so disgusting. The only warm emotions can be found between the mobster and his mother, and the guardian and her lover - and it both cases most viewers won't get involved. And it gets worse: From the very beginning the movie wants you to believe that is much more than it really is, namely a deep analysis of modern American society. Its catering to a very dumb version of a left world view - which obviously some critics find convincing :-) The end is especially telling: The movie is not brave enough to end with her climbing to the top of the society. To comfort those poor souls who have a sense of justice she gets - well, what could take her down? Drawing on real stories we would say: a police investigation, investigative journalism, a traitor from within, or a trial. But as the message of this simple minded movie is 'if you have money, they cannot harm you' these won't do. So it is the lonely disenfranchised killer who brings 'justice', basically confirming an analysis which is the basis for all the stupid conspiracy theories one can find. This movie is labeled by Netflix as a LGBTQ. Probably because the main couple are lesbians. But while this can be important to win our emotions when the world is trying to keep them apart because they are lesbians, here it is just a random fact. Or because most men with the exception of the mob boss are depicted as mean, greasy or stupid. Again, this movie is supporting the most simple and primitive prejudices.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like Rosamund Pike since The World's End and I was really looking forward to this movie. Unfortunately it turned out rather uninteresting and predictable. And starting with the scene of "assault" at the elderly home it turned into some kind of fantastic comedy with giant plotholes. I started skipping portions after the interrogation scene.

As a Russian, it was also funny to see Russians portrayed as tracksuit-wearing blondes without a hint of Russian accent. Oleg from 2 Broke Girls would make a more believable Russian. Peter Dinklage is excellent, providing that his objective was to portray an incompetent moron, who constantly angrily bangs at various surfaces. I guess anyone can become a drug kingpin this days, even if you get outplayed at your game by some middle-level legal authority. Pike is good at portraying her character, but I've already seen that character in Gone Girl. Overall I don't know what the creators were going for and what's the message of this film. Also, JClay Davis didn't say SHIIIIIIEEEEET in this one. Music is good though.… Expand

Missed opportunity~

The super-assassin (female of course) knocks the protagonist's car off the road, and then apparently assumes, "Well, the car left the asphalt, clearly shes dead".

Every scene is like this.

So this movie starts off rather promising, but quickly devolves into some sort of action thriller that immediately falls apart and never comes back. It could've been an okay dumb movie, but unfortunately it is something far worse - a terrible serious movie.

First of all - whoever wrote this doesn't know the difference between villains and anti-heroes. Even movies based around monsters know how to work around this by having a protagonist or at least someone likeable - the core of this movie is nihilistic, in that everybody is awful. Okay - but then why are you trying to make heroines out of the two monsters the movie revolves around? Actions scenes trigger sound queues to make us realize this should feel like a triumph towards a character we feel nothing but contempt for.

Peter Dinklage is great, but poor casting for a formidable, violent criminal - not because of his stature - because of his demeanor. Rosamund Pike is as great as always, but she has to work around a trashy script that tries to backflip and ends up breaking its own neck. No character arcs, no redemption, no folly. And then comes the ending - nonsensical schlock, where both the crimelord and the litigation parasite join forces, and then out of nowhere she gets murdered. Why? Well, clearly because they had finished the movie, but test audiences hated it, so they tacked on a scene that undoes the bad ending.

It's... it's a giant mess, really. The first act is promising, if a bit too dark, and then it all just goes to hell, and suddenly thugs and mobsters are complete incompetent clowns incapable of taking down a single guard at a home for the elderly or offing an unconscious person, while our evil legal guardian Jason Bournes the crap out of armed goons using tasers. It's just so improbable and moronic.

This movie completely falls apart at the script level, unfortunately. It's well shot, okay direction, great lighting, great soundtrack, and is somewhat well paced. But the writing of the characters, plot arcs, story and some of the dialogues are just so damn bad, I wouldn't hesitate to call it The Worst. At least if it were a little more hammy and a little less dour, it would've made for a fun romp - but unfortunately it is just too damn serious about itself to be this poorly written.… Expand

It's fun to watch a movie with no protagonist, just antagonists battling each other. What isn't fun is in the last quarter of the movie thinking you somehow warmed the audience up to one of the **** characters so that I'm rooting for them. Nah, man, you did a good job making us feel a certain way and then got it twisted at the end. The cathartic torture scene never comes and there are no lessons learned, only sociopaths pitching each other business plans.… Expand

Rosamund Pike and Peter Dinklage are great, but it's not enough to save this garbage script. When I thought karma was finally catching up with Marla, I was pleased. She deserved it. She literally imprisoned elderly people and stole their money/assets.

C’est un couple de lesbiennes, arnaqueuses de merde de leur état, qui se font du fric sur des pauvres vieux (enfin, façon de parler parce qu’ils ont quand même du pognon) en les plaçant sous tutelle et en les dépouillant de tous leurs biens…C’est un couple de lesbiennes, arnaqueuses de merde de leur état, qui se font du fric sur des pauvres vieux (enfin, façon de parler parce qu’ils ont quand même du pognon) en les plaçant sous tutelle et en les dépouillant de tous leurs biens… Une magouille bien huilée jusqu’au jour où la vieille qu’ils ont arnaquée se trouve être la maman d’un mafieux…

Jusque là, ma foi, c’est tout à fait distrayant et la blonde Rosamund sait ce qu’elle sait faire de mieux, à savoir incarner une détestable manipulatrice, criminelle abjecte, cynique et impitoyable… Elle l’avait déjà (dé)montré dans ‘Gone Girl’ mais là, elle se surpasse et très rapidement, on la hait cordialement, très cordialement mais on la hait de toutes nos forces, elle et sa plus jeune copine bien entendu.

Il faut dire que le film est un panégyrique entier à son effigie, tout au premier degré, une glorification d’une immoralité sans bornes avec de forts relents féministes et LGBGTBQBGLGTQ à la clé… mais je doute que ça serve leur ’cause’ ou leur ‘réputation’, bien au contraire même…

Mais ce n’est pas, cela dit, le plus gros problème du film ; son plus gros problème, c’est son invraisemblance de tous les instants avec par exemple ce mafieux (russe) affublé d’un certain handicap qui n’en fait certainement pas un mafieux crédible (encore le symptôme d’un autre agenda SJW, je suppose…). Sans compter notre machiavélique Rosamund qui déjoue tous les plans de la mafia russe, triomphe de tout et… survit à tout… telle une super héroïne (du mal).

Faudrait quand même arrêter de nous prendre pour des cons… un petit peu quand même ! ou alors ce mafieux est un nain dans son domaine, incapable de régler le problème de deux petites connes qui viennent de marcher (sévèrement) sur ses plate-bandes. Ridicule ! Enfin… la fin tente de se dédouaner in extremis, histoire de se donner bonne conscience mais le mal est fait, depuis longtemps déjà… sans compter le rebondissement super bidon juste avant l’épilogue : putain de n’importe quoi !… Expand

Right on the half of the movie the scenario goes down hill, plot gets corrupted with huge holes and a number of "convenient coincidents" which are used to fly main characters straight to their aims despite all logic and common sense.
Fair to say that all actors made really good job, I cannot think of anybody acting poor, but the scenario is just a pile of trash, honestly.… Expand

Full of plot hole. Multiple time, the protagonist is utilizing of deus ex machina to escape and decieve. The law is absolutely stupid, the bad guys are even more stupider. The only satisfaction in this movie is the end.

The movie forgets that she is the bad guy until the last possible minute just for the random guy at the beginning to shoot her dead in the street. She dies happy, rich, and in the arms of her lover, so the pay off is not at all worth it.

Also for someone who's job it is to take care of the elderly, she's really good at taking out Russian mobsters. Yes someone in the writers room actually wrote that as a plot point for her. Dont waste your time.… Expand

Really awful... I love Peter Dinklage, but he owes me a drink for sitting through that.

Being a lesbian doesn't somehow vindicate the moral bankruptcy of grifting the elderly.

Poor character development, awful story, and an abysmal ending = 1/10.

At first the plot seems good, and then as you get in hooding for good to triumph, major plot pitfalls develop. Never felt so morally bankrupt watching a movie before.

BRAVO! Great original concept. Amazing actors, but still a bore of movie. When she wakes they put a plastic bag over her head and right when she’s about to suffocate to death, the villain pokes a hole in bad through her mouth (good moment ). He then says “I hate you.” And she reply’s ( as calm and cool as ever),” but you’ve only just met me”. WHAT!? Anyway absolute garbage. You will be bummed unless you like fast and the furious movies if they had no action scenes.… Expand

Like other users have said, there is a strong promising start in the first half of the movie, but subversion after subversion of conventional expectations of plot and twist after twist gave me the same feeling as if I were to watch an inexperienced friend on grill duty at a Sunday barbecue flip the patties every 2 seconds ad infinitum, leaving me with nothing but feelings of horror, disgust and overbearing anticipation of the gross taste that the final result will leave in my mouth.

Funnily enough, as per the titular prophecy offered by the film, I was spurred to action purely out of the pure distaste with this viewing experience which I was left with. It is saddening that I have wasted a few hours of my life on this film, even more so is the fact that there were many more, hundredfold hours spent and wasted on this production. I’ve seen plenty of bad ones and good ones without feeling this way because it almost seems the criticism is unanimous. But this film, the amount of “certified reviews” that praise this film for being “brave” and “bold”.... just because the lead role is an intelligent, conniving, homosexual female empowering women with a take-home message; there still has to be a real story to tell. I have no problem with said character, in fact I applaud it. However, this film does the opposite. Yes, the premise portrayed does exist and begs questions for its ideas. I love that. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You really want me to be entertained by the exploits of a manipulative lady imprisoning elderly people against their will? I’m supposed to be invested in the goals of a lady that liquidates their assets to fuel more of her scams? Really? Don’t tell me the movie doesn’t use film language to make you root for Marla. she’s always framed as some sort of bad ass, boss babe. “I’m not intimidated by men! They don’t expect a woman to stand up to them!” Who cares- you threw away your chance at making a “feminist” statement when you made a business out of imprisoning people. I’m not impressed by her at all.
Other reviewers keep saying something about satire? B**ch where? There were no moments where I found myself being persuaded through exaggerated circumstances. I hated Marla for what she did, and that never changed. a movie going, “LOOK AT THIS BAD PERSON THAT DOES THIS BAD THING!” Isn’t satire, it’s just stating reality. There was no twist that gave me a different perspective.
I expected some sort of karmic justice, some sense of retribution. An assassination is the very least Marla had coming. She even expressly states in the film that she isn’t afraid of death. Taking away her freedom, like she did to others, in some karmic fashion (for example) would’ve been satisfying and left viewers pondering. Why am I supposed to be okay with a half baked, predictable ending? The ending isn’t good enough to defend.
I hate her girlfriend too. Their romance is set up as some sort of beautiful thing. You can’t deny the pathos this Film gives its monster main characters. The scene where Fran pleads for Marla to pack so they can escape the consequences of their actions; Their steamy romance scenes; Marla sobbing over Fran’s unconscious body while whispering “oh baby no!”; the bit where Marla’s like “we can run away… or get revenge!” **** you can’t get revenge if people are giving you what you deserve. Okay, you’re hot, you’re a lesbian, you’re so stylish (the movie really wants me to see how goddamn stylish you are)- you’re actively ruining people’s’ lives and profiting off of it. Go break a leg while crossing a river and drown to death. I never rooted for the “protagonists,” I kept waiting for their demise. The mafia was weak af, would’ve killed Fran straight up or held her hostage as leverage against Marla. Or Peter Dinklage would’ve killed Marla the moment he had his mom back and Marla’s trust. OR the mafia would’ve sent MORE GUYS TO GET THEIR BOSS’ MOM AND DONE MORE RECCON SO IT WOULDN'T GO SO PISS POORLY. Bloated script too. I wanted to scream every time we had to watch Marla WORK OUT UUUUGH. Screenwriter had to direct because they were too embarrassed to pitch their script. “Oh it was so fun- oh it was so stylish and sharp!” How is it fun…? Cause it’s colorful and has pretty actors and crazy action scenes? That’s all some people need to gloss over the sickening premise? Not thoughtful screenwriting, good payoffs, and a clear message? The dialogue and plot weren’t even that polished. There’s some goofy ass lines in this movie that you’re supposed to take seriously. “She was a cherry… but there were to many strings attached… she’s becoming a spider!” Lmao wtf
Long story short, main character is in a business absolutely no one can rationalize. The film tells you through its language that Marla is an “anti-hero,” standing up against tough guys in the business world. But she isn’t. She’s perpetuating the system that creates the oppression that she also loves to make herself the victim of. There is no thoughtful story telling or character framing that makes this film palatable. Critics can call it slick and smart all they want- it’s nothing new. It’s a standard “outlaw goes against the grain” story. But the main character is not likable, NOR compelling. They gotta be one or the other. I’m not watching a movie where I don’t like anyone and I’m not compelled by their goals. Screenwriter expects the crazy visuals and fast talking to mesmerize you into buying their cynicism as “capitalist satire.”
Movie gets a 1 for actors only, story makes you feel disgusting. The only thing it was good for was making people aware of scams like this.
Better movies about awful people using barely legal methods to gain money/success/control:
-Nightcrawler (protagonist is inherently mysterious. He is disturbingly comfortable with immorality. It’s suspenseful to see his plans come together. Satirical take on “the american dream” and our obsession with work ethic.)
-Gone Girl (Characters are compelling without being likable. Nick is a cheater, but doesn’t deserve the death penalty. Amy is cunning and you get why she’s angry, but you know she’s a monster.)… Expand

This movie felt like pure evil, and just left you frustrated and annoyed as the villians win scene after scene. Sure Pike gets what’s coming to her at the end, but the director takes 2 hours to get there, when you wanted it 15 minutes into the film. Her “ get rich at all cost” (even gross elder abuse) attitude is digusting, and shouldn’t be promoted as this film does in fact do. They are the worst gang that ever existed. They people are brain-dead. The main character's got caught by Hitman and it should be the end of the film. Hitman can't even wait to see if the main girl is actually dead. They were not under time pressure they could easily wait. If you want to see the classics about villains stupidity then this film is for you. And the ending is actually the worst thing if they just escaped I would give it 4 at best but it continues. They went after the mafiioso when they could escape with diamons. They would live with cash and start again! But no they went after him and they actually won xD. Like how is this possible. They don't have any self preservation instinct's. I don't even remember the names of the characters because they are so forgettable. I lived through it because I wanted them dead. At least the main character died at the end becouse of the guy from the start of the film. The title card at the beginning with the chosen and overused font is even painful to see. Combine the cinematography style with the music and you get the movie Drive but instead it’s starring the Nino character and instead of Gosling driving away at the end he just lays to die in the parking lot. The electronic music is cliche, well just the entire package artistically is cliche in the way that Urban Outfitters sells Dr Dre’s The Chronic vinyls in their stores.

Elizabeth Holmes couldn’t even watch this movie and sympathize with the characters or plot. Why does her assistant/ girlfriend never look directly at people when talking and why is her hair always in her face?

Is having a black man as the judge being tricked left and right end up as a failed attempt to check a diversity box?

This movie is tagged as an LGBTQ movie on Netflix, would the LGBTQ people really want this sociopath as a representative?

The whole staff at the wellness place is in on the con? There’s not a single person witnessing healthy elderly getting boxed up and sold? Marla wakes up mid car crash perfectly coherent and slides out of the sinking car like she’s the safety crew on Fear Factor? I don’t want to cinema sins this on the small stuff anymore but you’re telling me that the Russian mob, who can 360 no-scope and pack Marla up in bag like a chipotle employee, can’t kill an unconscious person? Try and find 3 Europeans who wouldn’t be able to tell you about the safety features in a brand new bmw with the “German engineering” that would be able make it an obviously terrible car to try and kill someone with. Im annoyed that this meaningless movie has me foaming at the mouth with anger. In Gone Girl, Pike is a sociopath but she’s really only ruining the life of Ben Affleck and a couple other guys she dated before. This takes it to a whole new level where it is so over the top that a sex slave trafficker is less angering than this woman trafficking the elderly. Please do not watch this movie. This is a movie star taking an Oscar bait role at the expense of the happiness of an average movie viewer.… Expand

I promise I'm not review-bombing this. I watched it because my spouse wanted to watch it. It's just dumb. I don't mind entertainment with dislikeable characters, like Breaking Bad, when motivations, actions, and sequences are believable. This is not. Pike and Dinklage can both act, but I don't know how they delivered half of their lines without laughing. Suspension of all belief is a must in almost every scene.

I can watch many things that suspend reality, but if the core premise of your movie falls apart at scrutiny, most sequences become impotent. It's like a horror movie where they can easily escape the monster, but choose not to leave. Okay, I can get on board with that if there is at least a semi-good reason (Jaws) but this film is only filmed with reasons to not watch it.

Oh, and while they may have been trying to empower women, it just kind of makes women (and lesbians) look like terrible people. Kind of like Hollywood's history of typecasting villains with gay undertones (look it up). Personally I think we're in a "streaming gold rush" right now and they're all competing for content. We now have exhaustive lists, but the quality has been sharply dropping. This garbage is a perfect example.… Expand

Has a great cast and an interesting premise. Elder abuse is no joke and this movie shows this, but to let the predator who abused the elderly get the win is just trash. Just woke trash. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have watched the first half of the movie and I was thrilled to finish it awaiting justice for the victims and retaliation. Unfortunately since the very moment both girls were caught and miraculously survived their executions, writing was extremely disappointing. Last 30-40 minutes of the movie is a joke, writers are mocking the audience and even the street execution of the protagonist at the very end changes nothing. Huge disappointement.… Expand

The script is a huge "wtf", extremely illogical and disappointing, and it's a netflix production, seriously???
I'm so mad, fortunately I didn't waste a movie ticket on it

Absolute trash. It's the last of cucks 2 all over again XD They're trying to make you believe two dumb girls could take out a mob boss. We want to see the main character suffer from the start of the movie and yet she gets away with everything.
