Terribly written, utter convolution after convolution, tons of telling not showing, action scenes rendered totally irrelevant since nothing seemed to matter, and wholly generic. It's a remnant of an echo of a clone of a slew of infinitely better movies. And it takes itself way too seriously given the omnipresent and seemingly unintentional camp throughout. There were a few enjoyable moments, and maybe 2 twists or approaches to them, that I genuinely found interesting. But it's not worth the trade-off of 90 minutes of your life. Expand

Hypnotic is a frustrating and underwhelming sci-fi thriller that squanders the potential of its premise and also its cast. Clearly there was little effort or desire to make this movie, and I mean to make it with any real substance.

The film suffers from a lack of originality and coherence. More than anything Hypnotic is afflicted by a lazy directing from Robert Rodriguez and a hollow performance from Ben Affleck, who throughout the entire movie can't get the expression of tedium off his face which inevitably shows that he made this movie more out of a contract than a genuine interest in the character or the story.

There's an interesting story hidden in this ill-fated adventure, but you'll never see it come to fruition.
There is no development or depth whatsoever in its plot and it also suffers from uncharismatic, underdeveloped and uninteresting characters.
Moreover, the concept it explores is not very well explained or exploited and is more confusing than meaningful.

Believe me when I tell you that in the near future no one will be talking about this film when they talk about Rodriguez or Affleck.

A cheap, tedious knock off of Inception. Some of the script sounds like it's been directly lifted. Nolan should sue!!

Clearly, the amount of money spent on this disaster could have been put to much better use, like actually making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. I can only assume that Ben Affleck found himself in dire straits, desperately in need of a hefty paycheck, or perhaps Robert Rodriguez decided to play a little prank on his unsuspecting audience. Because, really, what better way to show appreciation for your fans than to serve them a mishmash of stolen ideas from countless other movies? In fact, I highly recommend spending your time watching mind-numbing TikTok videos instead - they're bound to bring you more joy. Spare a thought for the poor actors who naively thought they were embarking on a project with the esteemed Mr. Affleck, only to find themselves trapped in this nonsensical and woefully misguided cinematic disaster. I love Robert Rodriguez so much, Sin City, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Planet Terror. But this film was disappointing. I didn't think this film was awful. But it didn't feel like Rodriguez, I know. Rodriguez tried to make Inception, but the story and acting were not that great (I blame the director on this one).

Just cheesy. So many twists that it was over-complicated compared to the plot.

These intriguing premises, combined with some successful sequences of the film, however, are spoiled very soon by an unnecessarily convoluted and tangled script, as well as by a substantially unsurprising, not very incisive and effective realization (even in the action scenes).
Robert Rodriguez looks at a cinema of the past that made history (De Palma, Hitchcock, Siegel, even if the closest model remains "The Alien" by Jack Sholder) and at themes already better treated in ambitious, innovative and complex films (such as those by Nolan), but his direction fails to master form and structure or to make his work more modern and personal.
The final result, even on a narrative level, is unfortunately of an insipid ordinariness that struggles to interest or fully involve the viewer, and above all, to excite him or push him to stimulating reflections.
Among the main defects: a simplistic screenplay, low-level digital effects, too many explanatory monologues, and the action that is scarce in quantity and quality.
Ben Affleck confuses inner torment with inexpressiveness, only partially justified by the role and the mental state in which Inspector Rourke finds himself for a good part of the film. The inevitable counter-finale alludes to a possible sequel, but it is very unlikely that "Hypnotic" leaves anyone with the desire to produce one.
Ultimately, a fragile and weak operation that gets lost in its own setting and falls apart by itself because it lacks solid foundations on which to work…

Average thrills with an excellent cast. Once the mystery is unveiled prepare for mediocre action sequences and b movie dialogue. Soundtrack was pretty good too! A fun if unoriginal watch.

The new "Guardians of the Galaxy" has already been watched, and there are a couple more days until the second part of "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," but I still want something new. This weekend, "Hypnotic" came to my rescue.

Before reading further, I recommend watching the trailer.

Perhaps not the most anticipated film. I, for example, learned about it from the advertisement before some other movie. The story about people who influence the minds of others with the power of thought sounds interesting. It immediately reminded me of "Inception," the scenes from the trailer with shifting buildings and the line "What you see is an illusion" helped me make that parallel quickly. The trailer did its job: I marked "Hypnotic" for myself.

By the way, it turns out the trailer is a brief retelling of the first few minutes of the film, not just a compilation of spectacular scenes. This is more of a plus than a minus because it helps us understand what to expect from the movie and whether it's worth spending money on a ticket.

So, the "Hypnotic" trailer is a good foundation. The movie itself (obviously) will answer the questions about the kidnapping of the protagonist's daughter and the specific involvement of hypnosis in more detail. The answers are sequential and quite logical, and the story follows the rules set initially. Up to a certain point. It seemed to me that when all the cards were revealed and it became clear what was happening, the events suddenly started rushing, slightly abusing those very rules. Why this happened is unclear; maybe they needed to fit within the 90-minute runtime? If the film had an extra 15 minutes, the ending could have been more tense and intriguing, but in my opinion, it turned out somewhat chaotic and blurry.

The story of "Hypnotic" looks quite complete, but it seems to hint at a sequel. However, with box office earnings of $940,000 on the first day and a budget of $65 million (I looked this up after watching), it doesn't seem like the result of a film that will have a continuation.

"Hypnotic" is a solid average film that was enough for me to fill the gap between the movies I'm eagerly waiting for. It didn't change my reality, but it didn't disappoint either. So, if you happen to have a free evening and want to spend it at the cinema, "Hypnotic" is a decent option worth considering.

This movie couldn't have been any better. I couldn't tell what's real from what's not and it was keeping me at the edge of my seat. I believe that this movie deserves way more credit than people are giving it and I, 100%, don't regret watching it. It really opened my eyes to the extent of which people would go just to have their own way. It also showed me that you never know who you can trust and that family is really important. Special thanks to the director and casts and I'm hoping for a sequel. Blessings. Expand

Then, bank robberies are framed around incredulous occurrences that call his reality into question. He sets out in this labyrinth of a plot to uncover the truth, which keeps folding back on itself. Affleck's intensity and director Robert Rodriguez's taut direction keep the film interesting and occasionally tense. Meanwhile, co-writer Rodriguez let the narrative spiral into absurdity more than once before a mildly-compelling resolution. This movie isn't especially memorable, but there's sufficient skill in the filmmaking and performances to make it moderately appealing. Expand

And not a bad thriller, there is a good cast, an interesting story, good action scenes. Then, closer to the middle of the movie, you discover the second part of the story and start watching the movie differently. And it all depends on whether you liked the main plot twist or not. If so, you will like this movie and you will remember it for a long time. If not, the entire structure of the film falls apart. You stop being interested in the development of the plot, the final and in general the final third of the film is disappointing. And I belong to the second category of viewers, I did not like this turn of the plot. Robert Rodriguez is a good director, but he can't shoot as Nolan Inception. And that's why Hypnotic doesn't look like a whole movie. You either accept it as it is or you are disappointed in the movie. Expand

Calling this convoluted and stupid is giving this film way too much credit. I would call this offensively misleading and directionless. Affleck is giving a wonderfully bad phoned in and expressionless performance.

I guessed a lot of what was going on when they introduced the hypnotic effect and revealed Affleck's character was immune. But still, the movie was worth watching. The most entertaining aspect was that it didn't stink of rotten woke propaganda. The acting was passable, the plot was decent, albeit predictable, and the movie was not overflowing with bad CGI. Although, there were some times when the plot would have benefited from a little more show, don't tell. Additionally, the mid credit scene cleared up an issue I had with the way the plot was resolved (being vague to avoid spoilers). Expand

An insult to your brain! Most stupid movie of the year! In the beginning I presumed the caracters that were used to do tasks for the hypnotiser where prepped in advance, but the movie is built around the concept that some can make you do something by telling you. I love SF so anything goes, if its credible. This is not! Also its full of mistakes. Like often they only have to arrest or shoot the culprit who is standing closeby, but they don't!And nonsense, like when they shoot his best colleage, to 'save' him from his hypnotic orders. There are many ways to prevent someone from harm, but a bullet in the forehead ain't one. There's only one reason to go to this mess, thats when you can't get to sleep. This will make your mind do tricks to escape the stupidity, like dozing off... Expand
