As a morality play, the film wavers between ambivalently observing and downright smirking at the questionable actions of the characters at large, an approach that doesn't exactly line up symmetrically with the more stern and cautionary final act. How are we supposed to feel about these characters? I at least felt certain of this at the end of the film, but throughout? Not sure. The performances are all quite good, with Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez among the standouts. I honestly wish I had more to say with this one, but I really don't think I was given that much else to discuss. Expand

Good film.

'Hustlers' makes for satisfactory viewing. Jennifer Lopez (Ramona) is accomplished in one of the two lead roles, I've previously enjoyed her in 2013's 'Parker'; which is the better film, but individually she's best here for sure.

Solidly told story, a few decent song choices in there too. All in all, it's a pleasant film to watch. Recommended.

What they think that made it look not sexy, actually did, they needed a better guidance, that's all.

Hustlers

Lorene Scafaria, the writer and director, is a hustler. Similar to the film, we, the clients, are robbed shamingly. But what's interesting is that the film loses at the end of the day. Not even looking at the intentions of the film, the film, as a story, had an extremely solid argument to walk through that Oscars table head held high. And instead the opportunity is not only missed but chucked away for cheap thrills and manipulative emotional blackmail. And this could have been a worthy Oscars contender and is instead just an Oscars contender.

And I emphasize on how big a mistake they made, on going light on this material. What the film industry, in the last few years, had twisted and turned its way out to address the political correctness, is something that the film has in its pocket all along. So now, all they had to do was carve a compelling drama. And instead they are overcooking those same ingredients, that turns into a preaching to the choir tone, within the first act.

The film craves for such moments. If anything it goes all the way around, just to create memorable scenarios, to the price of pacing. And it is not the pace I have an issue with, it is the two page script that is told magnanimously within two hours that I can't just "whoooooo" around. The film is also hard to watch. Not for the justification it attempts to give its characters but also the justification that it doesn't give to its characters. And it is not the narrative but the visualization of that crime scene that makes it horrible. For if told properly and rummaged around the files, dug deep into their homework, you will find a sweet spot to explore that would balance these Hustlers.

Critics who had anything good to say about it should be barred from the profession, and moviegoers who liked it should not be allowed to bring children into the world. One critic called this Jennifer Lopez' best performance in years. That's like saying Showgirls was Elizabeth Berkley at her best. Constance Wu plays the new girl who's taken under the tutelage of the accomplished mastermind (Jennifer Lopez, introduced via an amazing dance number and looking fantastic throughout). At first, things are all fun and director Lorene Scafaria has captured the carefree repartee and lively lifestyle with a natural energy. A valentine to female friendship and a condemnation of an engendered capitalist system. Wu and Lopez are phenomenal in fully rendered, dimensional parts. There are no heroes in this film - as well there shouldn't be. But Wu and Lopez craft their characters with tremendous humanity, equal parts empathy and frailty. Scafaria rightly depicts the victim's perspective of the events that unfolded too but doesn't condemn her characters for it - as there is a larger, more antagonistic, more pervasive economic system to which they ALL fall victim. 'Hustlers' is not as groundbreaking as festival critics set it out to be, but enjoyable nonetheless. Constance Wu may be the lead actress in #Hustlers, but it's Jennifer Lopez who shines through (especially at 50 years of age).

The key issue about 'Hustlers' that's still being discussed is whether or not the movie condones the "Robin Hood-esque" actions/crimes perpetrated by this opportunistic group of ladies. I personally wasn't bothered by it. The film ultimately felt ambivalent to their crimes. (But I know there are critics who think the film doesn't do enough to rebuke their actions — considering events in this movie happened in real life.)

Caution: To those of us who grew up listening to the magnificent pop music of the 2007s, you will want to dance and sob and remember that amazing, care-free era of our lives. #NeverForget: “Gimme More”, “Love In This Club”, “Club Can't Handle Me”, “Beautiful Girls”, “Motivation” + more.

Many years ago, when I was a kid, I use to dream of Chita Rivera and Rita Moreno doing a cabaret show together but now that I am a big kid I think of a cabaret show starring Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce Knowles. Where does all this come from? Many years ago, when I was a kid, I use to dream of Chita Rivera and Rita Moreno doing a cabaret show together but now that I am a big kid I think of a cabaret show starring Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce Knowles. Where does all this come from? Watching "Hustlers" I thought of Lopez making a big splash in the movies when she starred opposite George Clooney in "Out of Sight" and Beyonce doing the same when she co-starred in the movie "Dreamgirls" and neither did any more movies worthwhile.

Chita became a star playing Anita in "West Side Story" on Broadway and Rita won an Oscar for the same role in the movies. Chita would remain a big and much loved star on Broadway for the next 60 years while Rita became a star on television.

In any case, thinking about the 4 women was a diversion from looking at a movie that, while certainly glorifying a woman's body, shows smart women 'taking' dumb rich men. It sort of looks like in spite of all having sad backgrounds, most being uneducated, what choice did women have except for pleasuring men whether stripping or giving them lap dancers while other men took most of the money they made.

This all takes place before the 2008 recession when men threw money around as if it wasn't theirs and in most cases it wasn't but then that recession came along and the women team up together to fleece the wealthy clients they still have, making thousands of dollars knowing the men are either married or would be too humiliated to report them to the police or still had enough money not to worry about.

After Lopez's fantastic entrance doing a pole dance I lost interest in the rest of the movie possibly because the story of rich men being taken is so common place in South Florida that it seems to be in the paper and on television at least once a month if not once a week.

The performances, by Lopez especially, are all good while the direction by Lorene Scafaria keeps the movie going but her screenplay, based on a 2015 magazine story by Jessica Pressler, gets tiresome very quickly.

"Hustlers" is getting good reviews including talk about Lopez getting an Oscar nomination but I would rather see a 'duel' between her and Knowles or, even better, between Moreno and Rivera!

To be honest, I wouldn't have watched this if it wasn't for the fact that there weren't any films out this weekend that I was particularly jazzed about. Still I try to rationalize the cost of my AMC A-List subscription by seeing at least one movie a week. I was really glad I chose this one.

This is an interesting film. It's a morally gray movie that focuses on the ethical murkiness of the situation of women taking advantage of the type of men who take advantage of them. The movie doesn't try to take a particular stand but just wants you to watch in fascination like a good true crime story. This also sort of has a heist-type feel to it. It's also pretty funny at moments.

The film does a good job of making you like the strippers at the outset before their actions become more complex and shadier. All four leads are great. I particularly liked Fresh off the Boat/Crazy Rich Asians' Constance Wu as the lead in a well-balanced performance. Keke Palmer also has great comedic chops in this.

Director Lorene Scafaria (who directed Looking for a Friend for the End of the World, an interesting film) really has a confident hold on this film. This is one of those movies that does an excellent job of leading the viewer. There are just some really strong edits and other ideas. The lighting, the outfits, the musical selections, etc. are all good.

Overall, the Hustlers is very interesting, very enthralling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Interesting premise ruined by characters that are not really redeemable or like-able. Maybe it's limited by the source material, but very little is done to build up the strippers as the protagonists. Also, the disjointed nature of the interview style of story telling did not suit this movie well; especially with the weird non-drama that is created when Julia Stiles' character is "kicked out" of the interview, only to be called 10 seconds later with no plot in between. J-lo, Cardi B, Lizzo, and the chihuahua are the only highlights of the film for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. + Lots of good performances, especially Lopez, who is excellent, and even the cameos
+ Visually interesting, cool shots and lighting etc

- The way the moral ambiguity is handled here is frustrating. Not a fan of how the film often seems to excuse forming and running an assault and robbery ring as an acceptable response to trauma and hardship, or that it's sometimes written as a fun bonding experience among friends. A more critical framing and tone would have been appropriate. On the other hand, if the filmmakers wanted to commit to going the other way, trivialize the many wrongdoings, that could have worked too. Instead, the film seems confused about its own intent in portraying these events, and that makes it a much less satisfying watch than it deserved.
- Too many montages and slow motion sequences. The pacing feels off as a result. Dialogue and further character development would have been more interesting than the sixth "gang enters a club in slow-mo" sequence.

This is an incredibly superficial film that's being sold as something with a higher quality than it really has. I'm still surprised by the reaction it got.

Director Lorene Scafaria adapts the New York Magazine true story of a group of New York strippers who began to con some wealthy clients by drugging them and charging their credit cards to the fullest.

If you try to watch it as pure entertainment, it's fine, because other than that there isn't really much to grab in.
The story in itself is pretty basic: Dorothy (Constance Wu) is the new girl in the club, where Ramona (Jennifer Lopez) is the big one dancer. Dorothy wants to learn from her and Ramona becomes her mentor to attract different types of men. Especially the ones who are loaded. Basic stuff.

Unfortunately for the story that's where everything starts to fall apart.
All we know up to that point is Dorothy's ambition, and her ambition is not to depend on anyone but herself and that's fair enough, yet it's never fair enough to justify the whole thing.
I say this because pretty soon the greed shows its face when you're watching these girls drugging these dumb men trying to make you believe they're doing it to continue supporting themselves while they continue their exorbitantly spending.
Right there the balance disappears, no matter how much the director tries to make you believe this is a story of popular revenge, Robin Hood style.

Perhaps the most serious problem is that the film never manages to connect all its themes and above all its own message of paying those rich and misogynist men with the same currency - Because they're Wall Street men and they have done the same with the country - Stinks of enormous hypocrisy.
Especially when as I said, they use the money in superficial purchases, feeding the same capitalist machinery they criticize.

Definitely the films has some strengths but in my opinion not enough to receive the surprising reviews it has received.

The bond between the women is pretty good and yes, Jennifer Lopez gives her best performance in decades but Oscar worthy? C'mon give me a break.
Constance Wu is good but I never felt her right in the stripper role, I guess I'm just too used to see her like I see her in Fresh off the Boat.

In the end Hustlers feels pretty much like what actual strippers do, it's all just a tease.
Entertaining for a while but after that there's nothing really unforgettable.

She demonstrates that these women are much more than male fantasy stereotypes, broadening and deepening all of them by sympathetically depicting their roles as mothers, wives, caregivers, businesswomen. As a result, even the scenes in the strip club are less about objectifying women’s bodies and more about respecting their strength, power and grace. In accomplishing all this, “Hustlers” raises the bar for female empowerment movies.

Most important, Scafaria has created a truly memorable star vehicle for Jennifer Lopez (Ramona), who is simultaneously strong, independent, nurturing, vulnerable, manipulative and predatory. J Lo’s opening dance number in a strip club that is literally raining money is one of the most captivating visuals in recent memory. Throughout this film, she struts, she prowls, she hugs, she cries – and, through it all, you just can’t take your eyes off of her.

“Hustlers” is a fictionalized version of a true story, based on a “New York Magazine” article by Jessica Pressler, portrayed here as Elizabeth (Julia Stiles). The story looks back fondly at 2007, the period before the financial crisis when money was flowing and corporate credit cards had few limits. Over the following years, strip clubs, like the rest of the country, were in financial meltdown. After trying to survive on straight jobs, Ramona and Destiny (Constance Wu, “Crazy Rich Asians”) eventually decide to work their old client lists, plying them with booze until they can drug them and steal what’s available on their credit cards. Initially, there are few, almost no, complaints. One client was apparently bilked out of over $125,000 – amazingly, over three different encounters with these women.

There are enough missteps in this film to undo some, but not all, of the goodwill created by its strengths. Scafaria has squandered a perfect mechanism for social commentary - she intercuts the movie with interviews between Destiny and Elizabeth, a great opportunity to explore bigger issues and lessons learned. At times, the film does seem to be trying to address a bigger context of larger social, cultural, moral issues, but that all evaporates much too quickly. When the interviewer asks Destiny to analyze why and how it all went wrong, one would not expect her to offer insights worthy of St. Thomas Aquinas; however, it’s unsatisfying that we’re left with little more than a fortune cookie riddle: “Hurt people hurt people.” Without directly saying so, the film also seems to suggest an interesting moral equivalence. By supporting/advocating for Ramona and her friends, the movie’s clear implication is that it’s okay to rip off Wall Street executives because they’ve been ripping off the country all along. At the end of the film, Ramona says so directly: “This whole city, this whole country, is one big strip club.” This statement would be considerably more interesting if the film, at any point, had explored the ethical or moral dimensions of those times.

Ultimately, “Hustlers” is a lot like real-life strippers (or so I’m told) – a lot of flash, a lot of tease, but ultimately a less than fulfilling relationship.

In 2014, Elizabeth, a journalist, is working on a story involving former New York City-based stripper Dorothy, known as Destiny, and Destiny's former friend and mentor, Ramona Vega.

Seven years prior Destiny is working at Moves, a strip club, to support her grandmother but is barely getting by. Mesmerized by Ramona's performance and the money she earns, Destiny strikes up a conversation. Ramona agrees to take Destiny under her wing, and the two form a formidable team. Destiny enjoys newfound wealth and a deep friendship with Ramona. A year later, the financial crisis of 2007–2008 strikes, and both women find themselves out of a job and lose touch. During this period, Destiny becomes a struggling single parent who has a hard time finding a job.

With no other options, Destiny returns to dancing. However, Moves has changed: the financial crisis has impacted the number of customers, and the club is primarily staffed by dancers from Russia regularly willing to perform sex acts for money, a line Destiny crosses in a moment of desperation. She reconnects with Ramona, who introduces her to her new hustle. Along with her two protegées, Mercedes and Annabelle, Ramona targets rich men at bars. With each outing, the women pretend to drink with each target while also secretly lacing the men's drinks with a ketamine/MDMA mix; once inebriated, they are escorted to Moves where the crew has negotiated a set cut rate that they receive based on how much they are able to charge on their targets' credit card.

The hustle proves itself to be very lucrative, and the women enjoy their new source of wealth. However, other strippers begin to emulate their strategies of bringing the clubs clients for a cut. Furious, Ramona cuts her business ties with Moves, reasoning that they can keep the entirety of what they earn, and the group begins to service clients in hotel rooms or their own homes. Mercedes and Annabelle become uncomfortable with the new practice and no longer reliably show up, so Ramona hires women with drug problems and criminal records as well as sourcing strangers as new clients against Destiny's advice, making Destiny uneasy.

Destiny's fears prove true when a client Ramona booked for Mercedes suffers a near-fatal accident and she must take him to the hospital because Ramona could not be reached, with Mercedes bailing out in the process. It is revealed that Ramona had again been preoccupied with bailing Dawn, a drug-addicted new hire whom Destiny finds sloppy and unreliable, out of jail. Upon returning home, Destiny finds that her grandmother, who has raised her since she was a child, has died. At the funeral, Ramona makes amends and promises to take care of Destiny from now on.

Returning to 2014, Destiny becomes uncomfortable and stops the interview when Elizabeth insists on talking about Ramona as well as why they ended their friendship and brings up Doug. When Elizabeth returns home, Destiny calls to finish their conversation, recalling how her friendship with Ramona—and their crime ring—fell apart. She explains that Ramona's continued callousness drove a wedge between the women, and Destiny could no longer justify her crimes (with Doug being one of her last targets, who Destiny viewed as being a genuinely nice person, as opposed to their initial targets who were Wall Street bankers not held accountable for causing the 2008 market crash). Doug is able to convince the police to take his claims seriously because he has evidence of the group's crime, leading to Dawn being picked up by the police and quickly agreeing to wear a wire to implicate Destiny and Ramona, and the investigators managing to locate several other corroborating victims. Destiny, Ramona, Annabelle, and Mercedes are arrested, but only Destiny takes a plea deal where she serves no jail time because she does not want her daughter to grow up without a mother the way she did. Ramona is sentenced to five years of probation, while the others serve short jail sentences on weekends before being released on probation.

Sometime later, Elizabeth receives a call from Destiny who has read the article and asks her if Ramona ever said anything about her. Elizabeth reveals that she only interviewed Ramona once, during which she explains that after an incident she started to keep her most valued possessions with her at all times, including a cherished childhood photo of Destiny. Ramona fondly expresses that she could never understand how Destiny's parents could have abandoned her. At the end of their call, Elizabeth encourages Destiny to reach out to Ramona.

-Trip Fontaine

The Great Recession hit the American economy like a ton of bricks. Banks! Foreclosures! Retirement Accounts! Strippers! Yes, multiple facets of the American society felt the pinch of the economic bust of the late 2000s and early 2010s. The dazzling crime drama, Hustlers, directed by Lorene Scafaria, details how when the money dried up on Wall Street the ladies on the main stage at Moves had to make some other moves *wink* to keep things afloat. Hustlers is based on true events reported from a New York magazine article. As outrageous as the tale all seems, the fact that there is some basis of truth makes it even more engrossing.

Constance Wu plays the neophyte dancer, Destiny, who just wants to be successful, powerful and as confidant a dancer as the veteran, Ramona, portrayed by an awe-inspiring Jennifer Lopez. Ramona is Destiny’s mentor in the good times and, eventually, partner in crime in the bad. The fact that these women hustle some guys looking for a good time is no secret, but the how of the scheme is interesting. Plus, Ramona’s justification for their actions is thought-provoking as well. Do these slime balls deserve to get swindled like they swindled the American people!?! Do two wrongs make a right? Exotic dancing Robin Hoods.

Well, Jennifer Lopez is the reason to see Hustlers on the big screen. I don’t want to oversell her performance, but it is the best things she’s ever done. Jennifer Lopez was a bona fide superstar before Hustlers. Her performance in Hustlers only underScores *wink* what people have known for the last two decades, even if it hasn’t been evidenced in some of her previous films. The determination that Ramona has is palpable through Lopez’s every move in the heights of her dancing and the desperation of her crimes.

I’ll also say that Wu is very good as the conduit for the audience. Keke Palmer has some great scenes as one of the fellow Hustlers. And, Cardi B has a hilarious cameo. The remainder of the cast is uniformly good, if not a bit overshadowed by Lopez’s strong presence. And, there’s an awesome soundtrack from the late 2000s that is full of earworms.

While the ending feels a bit rushed, the movie does get to what happens and the how even if that’s a bit of an after-thought. There’s an interview framing device that is kind of distracting. All you will really want is the film to get back to the club and back to whatever Ramona is doing.

Ultimately, Hustlers is an entertaining time, with a great performance by Lopez, and a thoughtful moral tale about money, desperation and the limits of friendship. It really feels like an easy theater going experience for all that will fulfill your expectations. Hustlers is worthy of your movie theater dollars, and if you can’t make it before it leaves theaters, definitely catch it as soon as you can on your streaming device. In fact, Lopez’s first appearance on screen is worth repeat viewing.
