It's not even enough to say that this is a solid story told competently by a director who doesn't get in the way of it. Because Flanagan does. And for the better. In most cases like this, I'd say it would be better for a director to just play it safe and let the simplicity of the story in question shine instead of atypical directorial choices. But Flanagan really knows what he's doing. Using clever sound design, interesting visual cues, and thought-provoking framing devices, Flanagan wants us to see this story for what it really is -- not just a story of survival, but an examination of sensory perception and vocal expression as a whole, and how a lack of either ability can change, alienate, or otherwise empower a person in certain circumstances. Beyond this, the movie is also quite fun in all the ways that horror movies should be, always allowing the audience to savor the tension, nod along with the intelligent moves on the part of the protagonist, and reel back in their seat whenever something big happens. This was a solid entry on the part of Flanagan and Co. and I can't wait to see what else his budding career will have in store for us. Expand

This movie is about a deaf writer named Maddie, who lives alone in the woods. One night, a man wearing a mask shows up outside her house. From there, the movie becomes an excellent thriller that I loved. Mike Flanagan has a great sense of what scares his audience, and this shows in his excellent direction. The shots are long and drawn out, and fill the audience with a sense of dread. Because the main character is deaf, the movie features little dialogue, which helps permeate the movie with a feeling of isolation. The lead performance by actress Kate Siegel is excellent, and she really sells a character who is surprisingly resourceful in defending herself. The man who played the killer was also excellent, and by the end, I was really rooting for him to die. My only real fault with the movie was the gore. Most of it was cool, and realistic looking, but one scene involving a broken hand went way too far and was pretty disgusting. Overall, Hush is another excellent horror film from Mike Flanagan. Expand

At a brisk 81 minutes, Hush never leaves time for you to catch your breath. I was incredibly surprised by how much I enjoyed this film.

This surprise came largely because one would expect a movie with a formulaic home-invasion premise such as Hush's would be mediocre at best. But the fact that the heroine is deaf makes for some unique storytelling decisions as she struggles to win the battle against her killer with seemingly insurmountable odds. It's not a mind-blowing breath of fresh air to the genre, but it works surprisingly well with help from great pacing, solid acting, and a surprisingly intelligent script.

Even though there are parts of the movie that feel cookie-cutter horror clichés, those parts are overshadowed by the aforementioned strengths Hush boasts. The suspense gets going quick and ends perfectly, never dragging on too for too long. It does lack in the department of stunning camerawork, but the sound editing makes for a very immersive experience.

You know the film was really intense when you keep screaming "LEAVE HER ALONE!" or "NO NO NO NO NO!" while watching it. The sequences are very stressful, and the antagonist is truly a madman- a psychopath that had me pulling at my hair. Also, the fact that he showed himself and we knew what we were dealing with directly from the beginning, and the film-makers still managed to keep it spiced up right until the last second, is a huge plus. In conclusion, this movie is literally 80 minutes of nerve-racking material. Expand

A low budget but well-crafted and intense horror thriller can be best described as Home Alone but with a deaf protagonist.

Not to be confused with the Deep Purple song of the same name.

It's very tense and cleverly written bar a few cliche tropes that come with this kind of movie. It also has a minimal synth score, something I notice more and more horror movies are utilizing - 'You're Next', 'It Follows' - to give it an '80s classic slasher atmosphere. I was thoroughly satisfied watching this movie. It's constantly engaging, has great acting, and a few scenes are genuinely depraved and chilling. It doesn't break any new ground, but with 'The Babadook' in 2014 and 'It Follows' last year, 'Hush' continues to bode well for the future of horror. Expand

However,The latest film from director Mike Flanagan, Hush is a bloody mess. There are quite a few logic errors that take place here, but they get covered in pools of blood and a creepy atmosphere that really generates scares quite easily. However, this film is far more thriller than horror. Aside from the classic horror movie tropes that are present, it only rarely becomes terrifying. Instead, it really manages to thrill you quite frequently as you wait to see what unfolds next. Even more, the premise is quite engaging. While simple on the surface, the fact that the main character is deaf really adds another wrinkle here that makes the game being played all the more confusing and terrifying. As I said, there are a few plot problems, but nothing major that truly detracts from the film to any degree. Well shot, well directed, and well acted, Hush is a nice little modern horror-thriller that may not be a classic, but confirms that Oculus was no fluke and Flanagan is an up-and-coming talent. Expand

A decent flick that keeps the plot simple, in some ways this keeps the tension very high. However as the killer reveals his face at the beginning of the film, we lose that sense of urgency and fear. It becomes more a thriller than a real horror film.

His knack for taking familiar horror tropes and adding a little twist to them has allowed him to make some of the best psychological horror films of the past few years in Oculus, Absentia and now Hush. Hush takes the ever-popular home invasion trope and adds an interesting surprise to the plot: the main character is deaf. This makes for some incredibly intense sequences where someone who can hear could easily get out of the situation, and she has to rely only her sight and touch to survive the night. Even if the home invasion plot doesn't offer much new, there are some incredibly original sequences that arise due to her disability. Also, the intruder cut the lights to the house, so she can hardly use her eyesight to help her anyway. The deaf woman, Maddie, is an author, so she has to come up with several different endings to her books and decide on the right one. She does this several times in the movie when trying to figure out how to get out alive including one part that provides one of the best shocks in the movie. Mike Flanagan creates a home invasion thriller that distinguishes itself from the pack by being both original and brutally effective. Expand

This is one of the best horror films that i have ever watched. The idea of a deaf girl trying to survive without being killed is a creative idea. So what makes this movie so good?

1.The cast: The cast does a very great job portraying their characters. They know what's going on and they know what to feel if these things happen to them.

2.Scary moments: There are moments where your heart will start beating and it's unpredictable of what will happen next.

3.The pace: Hush is not rushed and it takes its time to introduce the characters before **** happens.

Now however, he exceeds all of his previous work with Hush. A psychological horror thriller movie that is very entertaining. This movie is perfectly directed and amazingly written. The premise is nothing new but the execution is what makes it, special and as good as it is.
Even though it is produced on a small budget and has a rather short running time, it still manages to keep us intrigued and at the edge of out seats. The ending is also very satisfying too.
All the actors do a wonderful job here. The dark tone and the R rating is what helps this movie qualify as genuinely scary at times. It takes the familiar premise and the cliches that come with it, and makes something new out of it. And that's a very hard thing to do, but proven possible by M. Flanagan.
I really enjoyed Hush, and while it isn't groundbreaking or anything (which it isn't even trying to be), it is still a fast paced, thrilling, scary and tense movie completed by very good performances and amazing directing.

Hush was made by the same guy who made Oculus, a very underrated horror flick. This movie is available on Netlfix, so it's not that hard to come by if you have an account. The one thing I like about Hush is that it doesn't try to be an over-the-top thriller, it's just a thriller that you can watch in the dark if you're feeling brave one day. I liked the gimmick of having the main character deaf; it means that 75% of the movie is quiet. You can expect jumpscares at one moment, and they never happen at all. You can expect the woman to make a move, and she never does. The movie toys with you very well, making you think one thing, but something else actually happening. The acting was fantastic, Kate Siegal and John Gallagher Jr. were great, even if there was very little dialogue. Overall, Hush is a great thriller that can be enjoyed by any fan of thrillers/horror.

Hush gets an 8/10.

This tense, psychological game of cat-and-mouse plays out in a believable way. It gives real reason as to why the killer is dragging things out like this. There's no secrets or hiding in the dark. Everything plays out right in front of your eyes. As a result it's more effective than your modern, jump scare ridden horror flick.

Now, that being said it's not really a scary film. Just incredibly tense and interesting. The movie's great hook is that our heroine is completely deaf. A advantage the killer sadistically plays with over the course of the film. While that sets it apart from the pack and gives it a edge over the competition, "Hush" doesn't redefine the genre.

It's got it's own unique ideas, but familiar genre tropes are present. So there is a sense of predictability here and there in the movie. However it's own twists make it very exciting to watch. It's another treat from the writer and director of the criminally underappreciated (especially on this site) "Oculus."

"Hush" is smart horror. Something all too rare these days. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it manages to be a standout, must watch for genre fans. It delivers on the mystery and tension you could want from a movie like this.
