The acting was amazing, the imagery superb. Although it can get boring, Howards End is a classic.

Excellent. How could anyone rate it less than a 10? If only people would gain insight from movies like this about the importance of preserving and protecting the environment. Very disappointing - despite the lovely settings, powerful story and some of the best actors. Performances unconvincing, and less than had expected.

This is simply an amazing film. The acting was so suberp, I was walking out of the house to go do something I had looked forward to all day, the film came on and within moments I was glued to my chair. Beautifully filmed and acted. My first of the Merchant Ivory works, and I was thoroughly impressed, though for all the fine craftsmanship, it seemed to be exactly like Howards End after its matriarch died--empty, barren and without any soul whatsoever. That's what stops me from giving it a 10. And mysteriously, I kept on half-expecting Sir Anthony to say 'Margaret' like he did 'Clarisse' in The Silence of the Lambs'... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having already loved 'Remains of the Day' which also starred Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, I was keen to watch this. Its amusing at times, such as at one point when the following is said:-

'I know he's been here. He had his tea here!' to which someone responds with 'this is a grave allegation!'

Its got a good script and a pretty stellar cast, as I say, with Helena Bonham Carter, Vanessa Redgrave, Prunella Scales and Jemma Redgrave also present.

It is a film about the social classes at the time its set in - the early 20th century. I suppose its relatively thoughtful and while not greatly exciting as such, its an ok period drama regardless. Its very dialogue heavy as well, with many scenes taking place around a dinner table or at a restaurant etc. This isn't as good as other similar films, in my opinion but it's still good. I quite liked the female characters, how they spoke their mind, given the time its set in, it was perhaps somewhat brave of them to do so.

This is very much like a film of a play - its an adaptation of a novel, which is fair enough. It seemed more theatrical in tone I think. Maybe not entirely enthralling (and somewhat long at slightly over two hours and twenty minutes long) but pleasant and not totally without merit, this is worth a watch if it sounds of interest, yes.
