What a great movie, one of the best I've ever seen This movie deserves 10 stars It's a great movie in terms of story Music, and vocal performance But some of the side characters were a bit annoying like the twins One of the characters that I liked the most was Hiccup. I loved him and Toothless and Astrid were great characters, and Stoick was great, but the rest of the side characters were pretty average I loved the story of the friendship between Hiccup and Toothless One of the best friendships I've ever seen in movies I loved the animation, drawing, and moving in this work One of the best moments is the moments of flying, you feel as if you are the one flying and not the character, and even if I don't take too long for you, it is simply a very great work.… Expand

Unironically one of my favorite movies of all time. John Powell's score is insanely good and fits really well. It's shocking that this is his first solo film and it sounds *this* good. You'll get more laughs out of a movie like Kung Fu Panda, but practically every line from Gobber is great. I genuinely don't see any flaws with this movie, and recommend it to anyone.… Expand

- Madagascar (2005) and Shrek (2001) in the Comedy genre.
- American Beauty (1999) in the romance genre and the screenplay.

This animated film is his "Mona Lisa", it's his animated "Gladiator". It is the most representative MASTERPIECE of Dreamworks.… Expand

I love animation, always have done, always will do, and I was blown away by How to Train Your Dragon. Granted, not all Dreamworks movies are bad, Prince of Egypt is one of the most stirring and evocative films let alone animated films I haveI love animation, always have done, always will do, and I was blown away by How to Train Your Dragon. Granted, not all Dreamworks movies are bad, Prince of Egypt is one of the most stirring and evocative films let alone animated films I have seen, Shrek was very original and funny and Spirit:Stallion of the Cimarron is their most underrated I feel. I will say too, How to Train Your Dragon along with Prince of Egypt is my absolute favourite of Dreamworks, and one of the best of 2010.

The story is very engaging; there is nothing too sophisticated for kids and nothing too childish for adults. It is instead an intelligent, moving story that moves along at a good pace, and I for one didn't find it that predictable, and I loved the bonding scenes between Toothless and Hiccup which were suitably poignant. The script is also very strong, it is thoughtful and touching at times but also amusing when it needs to be.

The characters are another strength. Hiccup is appealing as a protagonist, and Toothless is really quite cute for a dragon. Hiccup's father Stoick is a good character too, he is gruff and such but you can tell he cares for his son. The voice acting too I had no problem with, to me they did fit well with the characters, Jay Baruchal's excitement and enthusiasm contrasts wonderfully with Gerard Butler's restrained, gruff yet sensitive performance.

Where How to Train Your Dragon really excels though are in its visuals and music score. The animation is outstanding, while the characters are modelled convincingly the real revelations are in the stunning flying sequences and the beautiful lavish backgrounds. Oh and the fight sequences are equally spectacular, haunting but also very gripping and almost epic. John Powell's score is a revelation, and one of my favourite scores in a film of recent times. Sometimes soaring, sometimes dramatic, sometimes energetic, in fact no matter what mood is conveyed, the score compliments it to perfection.

So overall, there is very little else to say about this film, other than to say it is a must-see in my opinion. 10/10 Bethany Cox… Expand

This is a fun CGI animated film with quirky characters and some nice themes covered. The settings are fun and its pretty entertaining. Its worth a watch yes, so I'd recommend it.

I never really cared for this franchise to be honest.

First of all, the animation in this is spectacular. All the scenery in the film looks like something you could find in real life. The main thing about the animation that is amazing is how the dragons look. They all look like real, kinda cartoonish, dragons that come across as vicious but also cute. The cinematography in this film is stunning. The lighting in each and every scene was chosen correctly for it. I really like the score in this film that was done by John Powell. The music in the film just helped bring you into this fantasy world of Vikings and dragons. Now my main problem is mainly the casting of the voice actors. They all did great jobs as their roles but I think some of them would have been better casted if their character was older and not a teenager. That can mainly be seen with Hiccup who is supposed to be a teenager but sounds like an adult who already went through puberty. I also had a few issues with the pacing in this film. Some scenes were way too short and I would have liked to have seen them a tiny bit longer. Now I do get that it’s a film made for children but as long as there’s moving objects on screen kids won’t care what’s happening in the movie. In the end How to Train Your Dragon is an excellent film for everybody no matter how old you are.… Expand

Frozen al menos tenía canciones pegadizas con melodías fáciles de recordar, pero How to Train Your Dragon realmente no tiene nada que la haga especial, al menos desde mi punto de vista.

Es una película que ha cogido una fama monumental con el paso de los años así como con su segunda parte (aun por visualizar) y su próxima tercera recién anunciada.

Como cinta es bastante correcta, una trama simplona, personajes basados en arquetipos muy asentados a lo largo del tiempo, etc. En nivel calidad técnica (animaciones, texturizado, modelados, etc) cumple, pero me sigue pareciendo inferior a Tangled (Enredados) en muchos aspectos. Está claro que es una buena película de aventuras y que sobre todo los más pequeños disfrutarán con locura, pero creo que está un paso por detrás de lo que DreamWorks nos puede ofrecer, especialmente echando la vista atrás y viendo aquellas magníficas Shrek, Shrek 2 y Kung Fu Panda.

Rarely I give a 10 to any movies of any type of genre but this movie, in my opinion, deserves a nearly perfect score (Nearly, in the sense, that my original rating of the movie is 9.5 so I rounded it to 10 to captivate viewers to watch this movie immediately). It's part of my collection of unique and classic animated films. I numerously watched this movie for ages and still amazed of how wonderful it's visuals, themes, and soundtrack that it produces. This breathtaking animation is exhilarating, has a top-notched animation visuals, talented voice casts, solid storytelling, and an amazing film score.

The storytelling is easy to follow. It begins on the island of Berk, where Hiccup, our protagonist, is narrating the story and the current situation of his hometown. Now, before we delve and explore the contents of the film, a typical person would just assume that this is an another common entry animated film by Dreamworks since the disappointment we have experienced with Dreamwork's creation such as Shrek the Third, prior to the release of HTTYD (a famous acronym of "How to Train Your Dragon"). Honestly, HTTYD is very, very different from those previous installments of Dreamworks in terms of quality. It now evolves into a successful franchise and the day I'm writing this review, a new and last installment of the HTTYD film series, namely HTTYD 3, is coming to theaters in 2019 and actually I'm very hyped for that moment to arrive.

Returning to the plot of the story. The temporary antagonists of HTTYD 1 are dragons. They are vicious, seemingly hostile, and strong creatures that roam the island of berk since 300 years ago. Now, Hiccup is wanting to prove to his society that he belongs to their culture and wants to garner a decent reputation by killing a dragon in from of all the people to witness, because people in his island have a conceiving notion that he is just a nuisance and a trouble maker to the people around the island because of his frail and muscular strength and inability to fight or kill a dragon since he was born. Another aspect of his desire that motivates him in killing his first dragon is the fact that he is the son of the tribe's chief and he must prove to the people and boldly to his father that he is worth to be his son.

He eventually managed to injure a special black dragon that is considered by his people, a bringer of terror and death. This special dragon is Toothless and is actually a nice and intelligent dragon. I just love the design of the character for Toothless, he is cute, charming, and actually makes a great image for a stuff toy.

The relationship between Hiccup and Toothless (the dragon) is delightful and endearing. The segments of the film put together to show its viewers the progress and improvement of how Hiccup trains it's dragon to like him and have a compassion towards people is solid and appreciable.

The film sequences of Hiccup and Toothless soaring into the majestic air is breathtaking, I've never seen recently any animated film that explores this moment. Combined with those film sequences with a thrilling soundtrack, this "flying" sequences in the movie is the best moments this film will deliver to it's audience.

The emotional tone of the movie, though, is not purely developed when compared to Pixar's grand masterpieces. But HTTYD is still acceptable and find ways to compensate for that loss. Overall, I recommend this movie to be watched by everyone of all ages. It's a great moment to be experienced. One of the top animated films of 2010, based on the awards it has received; it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature in the year this movie was released. Though, I believe if Dreamworks had included a greater emotional depth and tone into the characters and it's story then it would be a difficult contender against Pixar's emotional masterpieces.

Rating: 9.5/10 -> 4.75/5 stars (a near perfect score!)… Expand

People need to realize that “based on” does not mean “movie adaptation”. That being said, I’ve enjoyed this movie every time I watch it. It’s a staple “misunderstood character #1 meets misunderstood character #2” movie, but where it really makes itself soar is animation, and even the interpretation of the story itself. When the movie starts out, we are led to believe that dragons are a static threat to the world of Vikings, as they often raid villages and steal livestock. We are introduced to our main character, a scrawny Viking who desires to prove himself by taking down a dragon, as Viking strength is determined by dragon killing. However, when he finally achieves this and takes down the most evasive dragon known to man, his heart gets the better of him and he sets the dragon free. Trapped by a disability caused by the Viking boy, the dragon and the boy slowly get used to each other’s company. Empathetic, the boy decides to help the dragon learn to fly again, and in doing so, develops a special bond with the creature. All of this is done far from the watchful eye of the village, as the boy fears they would kill his friend if they found him. However, through a heart-stopping twist, and an epic final battle starring the dragon, his friend, and a monstrous foe, the island of Berk’s view on dragons is changed forever. After all is said and done, dragons move in to live with Vikings, our two best friends get to stay together, and the boy gets the girl he’s been crushing on for so long.

The story is nothing special, but it’s the portrayal and pacing that really catch the movie. The animation is amazing for a 2010 movie, and the music (composed by John Powell) fits the scenes like a glove. The ending is, albeit cliched, happier than the premise of the movie, and left me with a big smile on my face when I left the theater in 2010. Now, nearly 8 years later, How to Train Your Dragon makes me cry, smile, and laugh as no movie has done to date. It is the pinnacle of my childhood, and while bringing back nostalgic memories in my heart, I will always remember this movie as a defining time in my life - the movie that kickstarted four things in me: my love for writing, singing, drawing, and dragons.… Expand

I enjoyed the story a lot as well as the characters. I don't know what it was missing, but it had something it needed. The animation is great, and so is the voice acting. It was actually pretty good.

How to Train Your Dragon offers you a story that you've probably seen, read, heard or play quite a few times before, with not a lot of new aspects thrown in, so in that part, it's nothing to remark to much about, and it doesn't reinvent theHow to Train Your Dragon offers you a story that you've probably seen, read, heard or play quite a few times before, with not a lot of new aspects thrown in, so in that part, it's nothing to remark to much about, and it doesn't reinvent the genre or anything like that. But, when you watch this movie, you can definitely see the effort and care that it's made with. The colors, look, designs, movement have been clearly put time and effort being done, and very few 3D animated movies capture the movement of flying and aerial creatures like this one. Throw in the mix some very imaginative designs for the dragons, some lovable (if a little cliched) characters, more than few funny and memorable lines and scenes, a great score, and you have a good mix that produces a fun action-adventure movie that while it's not going to be of the taste of all, and can't say that you HAVE to see it, but it left me with a fun time admiring the cool designs and movements of the dragons, and an enjoyable entertaining two hours that I can really say were well used. There's no two ways about it, "How to Train Your Dragon" is a truly amazing animated film that probably would've been the best of 2010 if not for Toy Story 3. I cannot stress this enough. This is THE Greatest Movie of All Time.

I have long been a fan of the amazing book series by Cressida Cowell. It was a huge part of my childhood, and many moments were spent inside my English class readingI cannot stress this enough. This is THE Greatest Movie of All Time.

I have long been a fan of the amazing book series by Cressida Cowell. It was a huge part of my childhood, and many moments were spent inside my English class reading books from 'How to be a Pirate' to 'How to Speak Dragonese', often to the odd looks of my classmates, most of whom were reading Doctor Seuss or thinly veiling the fact that they were playing Snake on a Nokia phone. No, the books were amazing.

By the time the film came out, I knew full-well that a film is never as good as its book. I wasn't sure I was ready to have my childhood ripped open and experimented upon. Seeing the trailers made me ask, "where's Toothless", as the numerous redesigns had evidently removed the tiny Terrible Terror-sized dragon in exchange for a much larger specimen. Heck, would they even speak Dragonese in this film? I vowed not to watch the film, and from the cinema came no urge to watch what could easily destroy my childhood.

However, I had just moved into a new neighbourhood, and when a parent at my school offered me the chance to watch it with her children, I could not refuse. Walking a minute down the road, I arrived in time to see the disk get sucked into the machine... I was ready.

Dreamworks, the creators of masterpieces such as Shrek and... Well, that was pretty much all I knew of at the time. I felt as if the disjointedness of Shrek would simply leak into the world of HTTYD, and that all I knew would be changed. I was wrong.

From the first scene, my head was dragged in all different directions. Hiccup, Gobber, Stoick, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, Snotlout et al. filled the screen, and the narrator told a new story I had never heard before. Not only was I captivated - I was enjoying it.

As I watched on, the beauty of this Dreamworks piece fully dawned on me. From the epic score of John Powell to the artistic excellence employed by the animators and artists, I could not get over how different it was, but in a good way. Heck, I even got used to Toothless being the size and colour of a panther, one thing I thought I could never get over.

Enough of my own nostalgia, though. In actuality, it is a gorgeous piece.

The voice acting from the likes of Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson was exquisite. I had never thought of vikings as Scottish, but it works. Even the little cameos of David Tennant, which, in regular re-watchings, I point out to my friends, seem to work. Jay Baruchel, a Canadian, seems to portray Hiccup perfectly, from the whiny, nerdy tones to bouts of anger and sadness, his vocal contours paint the way for a beautiful movie.

In terms of animation, no-one may complain. The individual emotions of every character are laid out expertly, and the mark of truly great animation, being able to tell a character's thoughts and feelings just from posture, truly does stand out. The care taken in animation is evident even in the tiny disappearing dragon tail in the final scenes, or the flickering of a candle flame in the wind, and the character design is brilliant. Unlike some other movies I wouldn't care to mention, the main characters look nothing like each other, offering a bright, varied cast to feast the eyes upon.

Finally, probably one of the greatest parts of this movie, the music. John Powell is a musical genius. I could happily watch How To Train Your Dragon as a music video for his expertly crafted score. Forbidden Friendship, Test Drive, This Is Berk and the now famous Romantic Flight all scream 'perfection'. Adding to this, Jónsi's wonderful Sticks and Stone, playing just at the very end, makes for a beautiful, even fantastic, ending to a beautifully fantastic movie.

The screenplay, by the legendary Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders (Writers for Lilo and Stitch) is an epic tale of misunderstanding and reconciliation, with the ending a masterful stroke. I'll leave you to find out for yourself.

All in all, if you have watched it, I can't see any reason not to love it, and if you haven't watched it, buy it now, sit back with a few hours to spare and get the whole family ready. I implore you, do it, and you will not be disappointed.… Expand

“How to train your dragon” is the story of a young boy searching for his identity; searching for who he wants to be and how to become it. It is a story of perseverance. It shows when traditions and conventions are hindering you, they should be changed or abandoned. When Hiccup fails to become a dragon fighter by following the traditional and conventional methods, he questions their authenticity, meticulously examines them, refines them, or even completely rejects them and devises new unorthodox ways. The myths fascinate him in the fantasy world but do not blind him in the real world.

“How to train your dragon” is full of sublime messages and themes but it is not a heavy handed movie for the elite. Quite conversely, it is an extraordinarily fun movie to watch, a movie that even toddlers can enjoy. The graphic design is phenomenal, soundtracks are captivating, dialogues are fluid and seamless, and it has a remarkable story to tell. And this wins them all despite of the nostalgia many older movies bring to me. It makes me ask myself the same question all my favorite movies and video games do: "why can't my life be like this?". But not everybody is a friend of these kind of movies. It might feel pretty generic and boring for some people and I can see that it doesn't actually bring much new to the table with it's storyline. But I'm a fan of happy endings and heartwarming stories.… Expand

This movie is a cult classic. Some dark things happen in this for a kids movie, but that's why it's so awesome. This was one of the best animated films, if not the best animated film of all time

This is the most fantastic, amazing, brilliant movie I have ever seen. Why? Well first of all the music is perfect, always capturing the moment perfectly. Second, the story it just amazing. Third, the voice acting is fantastic. Jay Baruchel plays Hiccup the main character, and America Ferrera plays the love interest Astrid. Jay Baruchel does a perfect job at playing Hiccup because he is just like Hiccup in many ways. Forth and final reason why this movie is fantastic, amazing, and brilliant is that the visuals are amazing. The animation looks nothing like you have seen before. You can see every little freckle on Hiccups face, even a scar or two. Most people would think of How to Train Your Dragon as a kids movie. Well I don't think so and so does Dreamworks. Dreamworks has said many times it is not intended to be a kids movie more of a teen and adult flick. You will notice if you ask a kid about this movie they do not remember it. Why, because they have seen so many other movies that are more kid like that this one slips their mind probably. Most of the fans are teens and adults, but that doesn't mean a kid would not like it, just that teens and adults will appreciate it more. This movie deserves a 10 out of 10. I say buy it. If you have a 3D TV watch in 3D because the 3D also looks fantastic. Dreamworks made the best animated movie ever in my book.… Expand

This is by far the best Animated Movie of 2010 and certainly DreamWorks Magnum Opus. Visuals are perfect, acting is top-notch, and the music is awesome. Having watched this film first on DVD, I sure wish I didn't. With its stunning scenes, its wonderful script, and surprising depth, "How to Train Your Dragon" truly is in itself a winner. How to train your dragon may sound like a ridiculous title to give a movie, but this surprisingly is very entertaining. The story of a boy trying to fit in with his rather violent background is not anything new, but is somewhat refreshing to hear in this light. Some of the great things this film has to offer are some pretty visuals; the flying sequences are a spectacle in 3-D, which has always been great for most dreamworks productions. Again the story may be old, but I still personally like it. Finally the relationship between the father and son, it has some levels if depth; for instance the father tries to appreciate his son, but just can't because he's not good at what everybody else can do. Then there's the stuff that doesn't really fly with me (hehe). The main does have an annoying voice at times, but that may have been intentional. Finally the supporting cast. They're not that well developed, a barely new them aside from simple character traits like: he's the hot shot, they're the troublemakers, he's the nerd, and she's the love interest. Anyways, this still a fun enjoyable movie, and I do wonder about the sequels.… Expand

Overall, while I enjoy How to Train Your Dragon I wish it had a more original premise in terms of characters and story, something Megamind would address. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy this film but I have seen a lot of this before and I wish it gave us something we had it seen before. But for what it is the film is pretty good. Unlike Tangled the film makes the story interesting so even though this is a predictable film with numerous clichés. I like these characters and I love the world. Plus, there is some great animation and awesome flying segments, which probably look spectacular in 3D. While a wish this film had more originality it is still pretty good. The story, characters, and universe I were likeable enough to I was engaged and that clichés did not bother me that much. When the film ended I was happy and glad I saw it but wishing I had seen it in 3D and/or IMAX. While it may not be the most original or creative film I have seen How to Train Your Dragon is pretty good providing likeable characters, a cool world, and is engaging and that is enough for me to say it is worth a watch.… Expand

How to Train Your Dragon is exciting, magical and sincere. Too bad that is only the case between the boy and the Dragon toothless. With all the action and exciting times throughout the film it needed to stop and let emotion take over for a bit.

Took me a while to get around to seeing this but now that I have I can see why so many people liked it. "How to Train Your Dragon" excels visually and creatively. Although I would change the ending a bit in order to pack an emotional punch, you can not deny the raw beauty of animation and visuals when you see them. Truly a gem of animated features.

I remember watching this in the theater and enjoying it, but just watched it again tonight, and it was sooooo much better than the first time. Probably because it was in 3D the first time, and all we are watching are for the affects! An absolutely brilliant film, and I have to say that after watching it tonight it is now one of my favorites of all time. Just a wonderful story. And the final scene in which Hiccup realizes he's missing part of a limb, and the dragon whisks him away...beyond touching!!! Will watch this over and over!!!… Expand

Surprisingly fantastic. The movie was epic on an animation level. A well thought out script that carried such heart around it. The music was the highlight and the comedy/action was fun.

One of Dreamworks best films. No wonder it has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Great characters and a ton of dragon action scenes render this as a great start to a potential franchise.

An entertaining tale on how a Viking boy befriends a dragon. Fantastic visual effects, and proberly the only film I have seen where I have actually liked the 3D. Well worth a watch 10/10

First off, I would give this a 9.25 out of 10. Great animation. Action sequences can be pretty great. Story is also well crafted. Score is epic, and the acting is quite well done. Highly recommend.
