great movie, it really connects with people who are smart enough to understand that the stupidity of the movie is intentional. in that sense, this is the funniest movie ive ever seen, and should be enjoyed by lots of people.

Its all silly and preposterous, but Andy Samberg does a great job in racking up the audience with the movie as well using his great, brazen performance. HE made "Hot Rod" such a funny movie.

It's filled with cheap laughs and slapstick humor, but for the most part it works. It will never be known as a great comedy, but if you are looking for a quick comedy fix I venture to say this one will satisfy most viewers.

A really fun, coming of age comedy that is quirky, kooky, and utterly original. I WOULD give this movie a 0, but I believe they should at least get a 1 for the uh...effort. Now, with that out of the way, I'd rather listen to Fall Out Boy while getting beaten with a stick.

I went in expecting a few laughs, but left with my side hurting and tears running down my face. The forest fall had me cracking up big time. Big thumbs up!!! Can't wait for the DVD.

I got to see a sneak peek June 27th and I can say that I wasn't really excited about seeing this film after seeing the preview. This is a comedy classic and personally I thought it was the funniest film that I've ever seen. I couldn't stop laughing, I'm ashamed to say. The entire movie is about as shallow as the online comedic shorts that made Samberg and his pose famous before SNL. I heard that the role was originally meant for Will Ferrell, and it I couldn't stop laughing, I'm ashamed to say. Hot Rod, is and was the best movie in the whole entire world and i watch it pretty much everyday and it will always be the funniest thing ive ever seen and i cant believe theres people who are too uptight to laugh at this movie. its very funny.

The humour is akin to what you and your friends talk about at school or work. It's often random and stupid but you laugh out loud anyway and repeat the quotes over and over again. HIghly enjoyable for anyone who is a fan of stupid humour.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It reminded me a little of Napoleon Dynamite.. it had that kind of weirdness about it. Andy Samberg was hilarious and the supporting cast had their moments. Some real solid laughs. The physical humor got old after a while, but the creative parts made up for it. I've seen better and I've seen worse, but watching Hot Rod is not something to regret.

Hilariously original and life-changing. I am a big fan of the Seth Rogan, Will Ferrell, and Michael Cera movies. Andy Samberg is right up there with him and he makes hilarious music videos. Great, hilarious movie! It is not a slapstick, the humor lies in the completely randomness that is SNL humor, and if you don't like it go watch Fox News. Only kicking back and listening to NOFX gives me more pleasure than this Great, hilarious movie! I thought it was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a loooong time, and if Superbad hasn't come out the same weekend, I think Hot Rod would be getting the attention and acclaim it deserves. I enjoyed this movie and I know I will enjoy it even more the second time around. The humor is not your typical style of say Wedding Crashers or Talladega Nights but more like Napoleon Dynamite or Jay & Silent Bob. Andy Samberg's energetic performance, the entirely Europe soundtrack despite there not being a clear time setting, and, what I would say is the best climax of all time, the riot scene. Accenting the film is Danny McBride's performance, while not fine acting, is funny during every line. The Cast, Direction, makes what critics may call "A Poor Attempt at an Extended Digital Short" what I call "A Brilliant, Misunderstood Brilliant Comedy"… Expand

The difficulty for many absurdist comedies (Wet Hot American Summer, Anchorman, etc.) is that they are designed to find purchase with viewers' tastes over repeat viewings, with cleverThis is a film that has only gotten better with time. The difficulty for many absurdist comedies (Wet Hot American Summer, Anchorman, etc.) is that they are designed to find purchase with viewers' tastes over repeat viewings, with clever asides and small jokes packed within the larger bit which may at first appear overly broad and simplistic, prompting some people to call a film with a potentially elaborate wit "stupid." Critics don't have the benefit of seeing a film multiple times prior to a review, and thus often absurdist films are lumped into categories with other twee indie comedies and ignored. It's true that absurdism is an acquired taste, and there are many people who don't grasp the rhythm of these films. But for those who can enjoy a scripted comedy with a sense of the wildly absurd and slightly parodic, "Hot Rod" is a must-see, and one of the most underappreciated comedies of 2007. While it starts with a bang, it takes a little bit for the movie to switch into full gear. Having Ian McShane is always a smart casting choice for any film, and he shows here that he can wield comedy along with his usual gravitas. Samberg, meanwhile, is a terrific doofus, as expected, and fans of his web and TV antics will love what he does here. But for the real breakout star? It's a three-way tie: Jorma Taccone, Bill Hader, and Danny McBride shine throughout the film as Samberg's plucky crew, and provide many of the great background laughs that will keep viewers coming back again and again (Hader's facial expressions, in particular, create a film reel's worth of hilarity when you least expect them). Isla Fisher and Will Arnett also play some great bit parts, though nothing too outside-the-box for either of their histories.

Combine all of this with a soundtrack so 80s cheese-tastic it drips through the speakers, and "Hot Rod" is absolutely worth your time. It's not for everyone, but as a fan of slapstick and absurdism, this film had me rolling from start to ridiculous finish.… Expand

Many also tend to bash other comedies that rely on sex jokes or jokes that cross lines of comfortability. That being said, I find it odd that so many verified critics did not at least give Hot Rod credit for not doing so. Again, it is very slapstick much like Napolean Dynamite BUT with a story line. I would say the closest film to compare it to would be Nacho Libre--both slapsticks truly original plots. As a fan of many types of humor, I thought the film nearly perfected it's goal: a childlike and amiable protagonist, off-the-wall humor, and originality.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a slapstick comedy that is quite exaggerated or 'out there' but also its quite good, I thought.
I think in a way its a piss take on family or teen dramas, its certainly pretty over the top, with, for example, the stuffy middle aged sponsor of the big stunt having a crazy rebellious tattoo, which should make you laugh, in a 'well thats random and not what you'd expect' kind of a way. Also adding to the over the top-ness of it is the fact that, at points in the movie, it bursts into music, turning into a musical before suddenly cutting back to regular dialogue, so it is a bit surreal in that way.

It contains some of the usual elements of such a teen drama movie I guess, such as the hot girl (Denise, played by Isla Fisher (yes, its nice to know there is a fellow Isla in the acting business! lol) and the less than nice stepfather (Frank, played by Ian McShane), who Rod has to prove his worth to and so on.

The character of Rod reminds me alot of JD from the US sitcom Scrubs, in the way that he talks and Andy Samberg looks a bit like him too, I think.

Isla Fisher was a good choice for playing Denise, I think, too, as she plays the stereotyped blonde 'hot chick' type role quite well I guess.

Expect plenty of over exaggerated scenes, some slapstick and a sort of retro feel to the movie, which it clearly has (although it doesn't appear to be set then as CDs are used but from the stunt costumes and the music played in the background and other things, I thought it had quite a late 70s or 80s 'feel' to it).

This is pretty zany and daft and I feel a bit of a spoof on other more serious teen movies and it does well as this. There's also a similarity to the 'Karate Kid' movies (again with the 70s feel to it), with scenes involving Rod doing Tai Chi and getting to know his more spiritual side, thanks to Denise.

This is a pretty daft and silly movie but it is also pretty entertaining. Don't expect a masterpiece as its not really like that but it is pleasant and amusing enough for the length of the movie (about an hour and twenty five minutes). Its just about the right length, if it were to be too long it would probably grate a bit but it was a good length, I felt and I thought that Andy Samberg did quite well in his role as Rod, he has the right sort of look for the character and played the character with all his over exaggerated uh ness, quite well.

This film is worth watching, if it sounds like its something you'd enjoy, that you'd find it funny then you probably will, certainly the other reviews ive seen for it have all been positive, so yes I do recommend it. Its good for a laugh!… Expand

A film that you either get it, or you don't. Similarities to Napoleon Dynamite. Predictable throughout, but somehow it just works. Well worth a watch.

Hot Rod is an underrated gem of a movie. The movie's got a really good story and it's about this lad, who's called Rod (Andy Samberg) who's this slacker. He lives with his mother, his brother and his stepfather (Ian Mcshane).

However, laterHot Rod is an underrated gem of a movie. The movie's got a really good story and it's about this lad, who's called Rod (Andy Samberg) who's this slacker. He lives with his mother, his brother and his stepfather (Ian Mcshane).

However, later in the movie, we find out that Rod's stepfather needs an operation. So, Rod and his crew decide to raise some funds for it and he plans to set a school bus jumping record to earn the money for his stepfather.

The movie's got some great acting from all of the cast, especially from Rod, Dave and Frank those three are all honestly brilliant.

The movie's got some very funny dialogue, which is given well from the characters throughout this movie.

Also, the humour which this movie's got is honestly brilliant, most of the scenes throughout this movie had me dying of laughter, especially the ones with Rod doing the stunts.

The pacing for the build ups throughout this movie is very hit and miss, most of the time it works very well and the scenes are very well built up. While, some of the scenes aren't and it sort of ruins those specific scenes being built up.

There's surprisingly a good amount of heart throughout this movie, which I wasn't expecting and that's another positive for this movie.

Finally, there's some really good love and hate chemistry between Rod and his stepfather throughout this movie and it's really well built up.

The love interest between Rod and Denise (Isha Fisher) is decent and it works quite well throughout this movie.

The movie's even got a great soundtrack with lots of great songs from Europe and many more.

Overall, Hot Rod is an underrated gem of a movie. The movie's got a really good story, great acting, funny dialogue, brilliant humour, hit and miss pacing and a good amount of heart. The movie's even got a really good love and hate relationship between the son and the stepfather, a decent love interest and a great soundtrack.… Expand
