Director Will Shriner's adapted screenplay is not well made and the film misses elements in Hiaasen's best selling novel, Lerman does a B level acting and Luke Wilson looks clueless as an officer (I could imagine better actors playing this role). Fans of the book will be disappointed as I was watching Shriner's flat direction ruin the adaptation. But the film's message is caring and important for children, the film looks gorgeous but the film falls flat like a pancake don't let Hiaasen's film fool you! Grade C- Expand

Doesn't really hold up to the book, but is a good adaptation. Captures the spirit and is an overall enjoyable movie with good young actors and a good story.

This reminded me of those afterschool specials I use to watch on TV in the early 80's. It has a great message and Logan Lerman is convincing as the main character, but the dialogue and acting ability of the rest of the cast is uneven. Similarly, Luke Wilson was sorely miscast as the bumbling good cop. I'm guessing the children's novel is way better than this adaptation. Expand

The stars are the Florida scenics -- lovingly photographed, and the owls. Like many good stories, there are embelleshments. The bullodozer is huge, the characters are colorful, and the plot vividly drawn. But, as for most stories, one must sit back, suspend disbelief, and enjoy the show. For those who do, and for the filmgoers described above, the film will be warm and engaging. Expand

There are so many jaded critics out there who demand that films be dark and edgy in order to be considered "good" that it is not surprising that some would not enjoy Hoot. But they lose sight of the fact that Hoot is not aimed at film critics but at families. It was refreshing to see a film that championed kids being kids -- not MTV wannabees. The idea that if we act locally we can make a difference is also a story worth seeing. The acting is spirited, the soundtrack is fun, and kids will enjoy it. Another winner from Walden Media and New Line. Expand
