Himizu is a challenging film, but not because it's complicated but because it's not a film that wants you to like it.
And that as strange as it sounds, is what Sion Sono was trying to do.
The movie is a manga adaptation of a different story.

The movie is a manga adaptation of a different story. Sono changed it to focus on the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in 2011.
The disaster occurred in March, in May Sono was already filming it.

Much of the repetitive style of the director is present. It's no longer something I can complain about because that's how he tries to deliver his message, and although this may be more than exasperating for many, the environment and the situations portrayed make of Himizu a quite emotional experience, regardless of the stress caused.

One of the best film I've seen from Sono.
