I expected less and this film delivered a whole lot more. The depth and complexity of the dialogue in combination with excellent cinematography was impressive and kept me engaged throughout. Powered by great acting performances, an interesting story, beautiful cinematography, an eerie and unnerving soundtrack, genuinely tense scenes and an absolutely insane last half hour, this very polarizing horror movie deserves to be seen.

Honestly, where do I begin with this movie? I'll try my best, but there will be no promises. It's been awhile for any horror movie ever to leave me traumatize. While I wouldn't call it scary, just unnerving and tragic; youI'm speechless...

Honestly, where do I begin with this movie? I'll try my best, but there will be no promises. It's been awhile for any horror movie ever to leave me traumatize. While I wouldn't call it scary, just unnerving and tragic; you will never forget it.

There is no jump scares or any typical story about a ghost haunting - nope, instead we get a slow-burn nightmare about a family quietly going insane together.

Toni Collette and Alex Wolff are forces to be reckoned with. Both deliver powerhouse performances, which only added to the intensity. Not leaving out Milly Shapiro, Gabriel Byrne and even Ann Dowd for their superb acting.

This is Ari Aster first feature length film and already his on my radar. Aster directing and way of building tension is crazy good. Shut up and give me 'Midsommar' already!

One of the best psychological movies of 2018.… Expand

In the subsequent weeks I found myself talking about it often with friends who had seen it, revisiting the most memorable moments and finding myself disturbed all over again. The plot is absurd and if you read a synopsis you'd assume this was a hokey mess, but the characters and their relationships are so grounded in reality (anchored by Toni Collette and Alex Wolff's remarkable performances) that when the worst happens your empathy overpowers your incredulity and you're sucked in. Not for the faint of heart, but I wouldn't be surprised if we're still talking about Hereditary decades from now.… Expand

Apart from the dull elongated shots of nothing and slow conversations about nothing in the first half the rest of the film is perfectly paced revealing the story is a near perfect way. Acting, sound design, cinematography are all excellent. This is a really scary film that will stay with you so long as you get through the slow first part.… Expand

I didn't dislike it as such. It had some interesting scenes and the acting was excruciatingly good at times. It's the story that lacks in my opinion. Or rather, how it's explained or played out. It relies too much on just throwing weird stuff at you and hoping some of it sticks. I expect most of it has meaning, but a lot of it just went over my head.

Overall it was too weird for me, but ultimately I did like it for the plot twists and parts of the story that did end up making sense... mostly.… Expand

From the get go, Hereditary unsettled me. The slow and sweeping camera angles, the creepy young girl character Charlie, and the inescapable feeling that some huge scare was on its way. But the film holds back so effectively on the jump scares. It chooses psychological and audio horror over visual scares, until much later on. The acting is on the whole excellent and powerful, and brings to Life a particularly terrifying and grisly event that happens in the first half of the film. It's a film that affects psychologically, and is in that sense a cut above nearly every other modern day horror I've seen. The final few scenes do rush up on the viewer perhaps a little too quickly, and at first viewing seem bizarre, but all make sense when you think about them afterwards. Its horror would come from the same place as TheSomething, something, A24. Ari Aster proves himself a competent director with his debut “horror” film. Hereditary is many things – suspenseful, intriguing, occult – but not necessarily scary. Its horror would come from the same place as The Exorcist or Sinister but is tamer. Comparatively, Hereditary could certainly be classified as a drama with psychological horror elements, a title I would deem aptly placed. Aster is a subtle filmmaker including many obscured symbols and lighting choices which play into the movie’s theme and help build up the atmosphere. Toni Colette gives a drop-dead performance and truly is the selling point of the film. Her character’s relations and mannerisms are intricate, well-developed, and the focal point of the film. Aside from Annie Graham (Toni Colette), the supporting cast give above-average performances, each demonstrating their specific character’s motivations and trauma. Aster crafts Hereditary with a steady hand and provides audiences with an unflinchingly deep (lore-wise) piece of modern cinema.… Expand

Absolutely stunning movie and one of my favorite horror movies of all time. The atmosphere is amazingly eerie, the movie is well shot and cut and the actors are doing an amazing job. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. We are facing an extremely thrilling feature right here. 'Hereditary' directly inserts itself in the continuity of the alternative modern horror movies, cultivating throughout its story a visceral, unwholesome and toxic atmosphere.

The cast is just awesome and delivers a stunning performance including from Charlie (Milly Shapiro), who clearly is here thanks to the cleidocranial dysostosis she suffers from. I guess all means are good to evoke fear and a sense of strangeness in the minds of the audience. Each actor and actress is on the perfect place for him/her excepted maybe for Joan (Ann Dowd). The photography, overall artistic direction, lighting, scenes are just top notch. The pace leaves much to be desired but participates in the terrific intensity of the movie.

The story is to me the worst of it all. 'Hereditary' presents us numerous tiny and gigantic clues. As you watch it for the first time you do know they will be usesuf in a near future. But no. At the end of it, there is as many events, characters' choices and scenes remaining unexplained. The details struggle greatly to come together to form an understandable and engaging whole. I checked explanatory videos but I truly didn't learn more than what I already knew, as the storylines of the movie seem to be dark for many of us. The end is characterized by a rarely-seen before intensity but is clearly related to paranormal and surreal which ruins a major part of the realistic atmosphere.

'Hereditary' almost had everything to be a true masterpiece but ends up suffering from the inordinate aspirations of its producers.… Expand

one of the best horror movies of the 21st century for sure. it completely promises for a new ground-breaking director that is ari aster. the last 30 minutes of the movie alone is worth watching more than once

That's how horror has to be. I'm really not a fan of the recurring 0815 Jumpscare horror flicks and so I'm all the more happy that Hereditary is breaking clichés with most horror genres.

This is not conjuring or insidious part 30, but refreshing horror food that is damn creepy.

The film creates a really disgusting, threatening atmosphere that makes you shudder again and again. In addition, some scenes are staged incredibly disturbing and penetrate to the core.

You have to have a lot of respect for the acting performance of everyone involved, that's really great.

All in all, a damn creepy, disturbing horror trip.… Expand

The very opening shot of the film sets up the idea that the family is being observed and manipulated by outside forces. As the film progresses a strong sense of dread and hopelessness sets in because everything seems to be staged by the cult in this movie. Not only to they appear at the funeral, which the mom notes the unfamiliar faces, their sigil is carved on the post Charlie is decapitated on; suggesting they placed the deer and orchestrated the nut consumption. In kind, upon repeat viewings I definitely try to pick out more of these signs. Toni Collette's performance in this film is also something that floored me. Never before have I seen such a convincing depiction of abject misery, her wailing is haunting. I recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it yet, it's phenomenal.… Expand

Mysterious characters, symbolism, and a less-than-conventional family are all wired into a thicker more hellish outcome than one might anticipate from start of the film. The movie visits the macabre corners of personal family issues...loss, betrayal, and parenting, to name a few. But the other end of the spectrum of the plot requires deeper investigation to understand the occult, witchcraft, and even hell. The fact that the film captures dread in such an intimate way from a personal and cosmic experience is fantastic. You'll be on the edge of your seat the entire time.… Expand

This is an interesting debut by director Ari Aster. The talent is evident here for the director and the movie is a family drama for more then the first half and by the end it becomes a ferocious and effective pure horror. I enjoyed it and I found it pretty original tough it's obviously a derivative movie. It felt like a well done genres mix (family drama and horror) with an art house production design and it clearly succeeds in its intent to be scary even if it isn't disturbing (as for example "The Witch" actually is, less scary but certainly more disturbing). This movie is not a masterpiece but it is a good One of course. A movie destined to become a cult.… Expand

Also it shows the best performances of the leading actors: Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Gabriel Byrne and Ann Dowd. Ari Aster creates a classic snapshot of horror cinema and which will be taken as the main point of reference for future generations.

I enjoyed this movie apart from a couple of aspects. I'm glad that I missed the hype train on this one cause I went into with a blank slate. This movie is more unsettling than sudden jump scares, which I like more. My biggest issues with the movie was the direction of the story (It all works together but is kind of dumb) and the main guy looked a little too old for the part. Though he did do a good job with the majority of the film. I'd recommend this movie if you are a fan of more passive horror that creeps you out rather than outright scares you.… Expand
