This film, seen in 2022, is even more relevant. In a world governed by technological innovations, this film ages like good wine. Spike Jonze's direction is simply fantastic, the cinematography of a dystopian Los Angeles is equally wonderful and then ... What should I say about Arcade Fire's soundtrack? Superb. Joaquin Phoenix acts at his best levels here and Scarlett Johansson is also good at giving voice to the operating system.
A film that speaks of loneliness, of the degeneration of social relations to which technological innovation will lead. All through the great direction of Spike Jonze.

Just about ever scene had me thinking about four or five different ways the story could go. So many stories these days highlight some element of technological advancement, but they're usually developed in such a pedestrian way. I'm so glad Jonze put his unique stamp on this picture. Phoenix delivers the goods, as you would expect, but the supporting turns by Amy Adams, Olivia Wilde, Portia Doubleday, Rooney Mara, and, of course, Scarlett Johansson are phenomenal. Further, the future Los Angeles setting is so delicately crafted, right down to the subtle fashion trends, but these elements are never distracting. An easy recommendation. Expand

I can't see writing a detailed review of this movie. It is obvious that it is widely considered to be excellent. To me, it is writing and acting meshing in the best possible way.
I should qualify by saying that the characters in this movie are very much like people I normally have in my life - mannerisms, speech patterns, subject contexts, etc. So, perhaps I relate to the characters more closely than most people would.
It seems obvious to me that the movie is not about technology... yet, individuals seem to be misconstruing the point of the movie not realizing that. Apparently, the technological context of the movie is difficult for many individuals to orient their thinking around. It is worth noting the technology is not particularly advanced (we are not dealing with time or interstellar travel) and will probably be available in no more than 20 to 50 years from now (I have worked in that field).
This is a film for thoughtful individuals. If you require car chase scenes, blazing guns, splattered bodies, explosions, etc. - you will definitely want to move on to something more to your liking in the action genre. This film involves long scenes of dialog that involve nuanced acting and requires a modicum of an attention span and an interest in what makes people behave as they do.
The point of the movie is that people think they want perfect relationships and don't understand that the imperfect human condition is actually the fulfillment of human relationships. A meaningful human relationship takes thought and effort and the willingness to deal with the flaws of others.

While his other films have some wonderful moments of originality and comedy, I found them hard to connect with emotionally (with Where the Wild Things Are all I heard was James Gandolfini). Phoenix and Johansson are incredible. Chris Pratt is hilarious as always, and the vision of a future Los Angeles is seamless (save for the stunning cleanliness and lack of diversity, though admittedly this is a look at one man's story and life in the future, not the whole of a city, which is expansive and massive with glass towers sprouting up everywhere). It will be interesting to see if the film captures the interest of a larger audience. Hopefully, it will. Expand

With beautiful choreography and cute visuals that paints the futuristic LA scenery with bright, vivid, and lovely colors that soothes the view, "Her" tells the story of a divorced writer Theodore, played by Joaquin Phoenix with his excellent performance, who finds himself in love again through a special AI named Samantha. The movie boasts a heart-warming yet poignant story and some memorable dialogue as Spike Jonze develops Theodore, a man who had lost the love of his life and is afraid of contacting or getting to know others, and helps him find the confidence to love someone again through Samantha. Although Samantha leaves Theodore, behind all his broken heart and tears, Theodore is finally portrayed as someone who has learned to step up and become a stronger person. Easily the most personal and one of the best movies I've seen in years. Expand

The science fiction aspect of the movie seems to be little more then a backdrop to what is really a story about relationships. I was actually pleasantly surprised by this, though I can see where this would put some people off. Admittedly, it also seemed to run long, but once again for me that didn't detract from the overall experience. It's a movie that addresses loss and letting go, something that I can relate to on many different levels. It's a shame that a few people fail to see that, but I'm still thinking about it months after seeing it.

I particularly liked the fact that despite being essentially a sci-fi film, it doesn't try to be flamboyant and had a very conscious use of special effects. Asimov argued that science fiction is not a genre, but rather a trope or a setting you could apply to any genre: and this film is proof.

The soundtrack was very well thought-out, and Phoenix gives a credible representation of a depressed lonely man. Scarlett Johansson's voicing is amazing, and she turns out to be a lot more human than Theodore: in fact, there were times when I forgot she is a computer. Amy Adams is good, though we don't see much of her.

And to the people who argue it's an unlikely representation of the future, you just don't know where are we going with technology. Ten years ago, if you told someone that in ten years people would be talking at their phones because they're too lazy to type a message, they would probably have laughed at you. So, to me, the future depicted in Her could be (worryingly) much, much closer than we think.
Beautiful, must see, one of the best of last year.

Many scenes show Theodore strolling through the streets, persons around him with their heads down, occupied with their ear pieces. An all-too-familiar image in today's phone-obsessed culture that paints a kind of low-key, apocalyptic picture. The director takes a few jabs at gaming culture too — in the future, video games finally give up and just let all the characters scream swear words, racist insults, and misogynistic non sequiturs familiar to anyone who has spent time playing Call of Duty multiplayer.

Her's moral questions dig even deeper than the idea of man/machine relationships. Late in the film, Samantha introduces Theodore to an OS pieced together by the writings of a deceased philosopher. Programmers have revived the dead in A.I. form. And somehow, that's less advanced than what the operating systems are doing on their own.

Her is staggering in scope while exploring the tiniest facets of intimacy and attraction. Phoenix's introspection thrives in Jonze's living, breathing sci-fi landscape, accompanied by Arcade Fire's soft piano melodies that feel like Theodore's own digital signal. her builds and builds in unexpected ways as it climbs towards a profound conclusion, as messy, passionate, impactful relationships always do. Examining his own life, Theodore tells Amy that he worries, “I have felt everything I want to feel.” her digs into that rumination, stretching it across the past, present, and future.

The masterfully done science fiction film her features a remarkable performance from Joaquin Phoenix and a moving, intelligent story directed with restraint by Spike Jonze

Love at first byte.
Sorry about the awful pun. Don't even think the movie is as horrible.

It is difficult for a movie to have an after taste of philosophical
questioning leave you with a warm heart, but Her pulled it off like a
pro. While having some issues with pacing in the third half the
relationship between Joachim Phoenix's character Theodre and Samantha
voiced by Scarlett Johansson was a spark that managed to warm my heart.
Phoenix is an amazing example of a talented actor. In one film like
"The Master" you feel strange and uncomfortable toward him while in
"Her" you know that if you met his character you would just feel like
hugging him. Theodore is warm, funny and organic. Scarlett Johansson in
the other hand manages to charm the viewer and have great chemistry
with the male protagonist just by using her voice. She is complex and
interesting because if you didn't know, she is an A.I. The amazing
thing is that you feel her actually being real and having emotions and
sometimes the film purposely reminds you that she is artificial. You
know Spike Jonze did a good job when your thoughts are carried forward
intentionally by his project. When I said this movie warmed your heart
I really meant it. Arcade Fire outdid themselves with the soundtrack
and every time a song mixes itself with the beautiful photography you
get those bittersweet knots on your throat. Speaking about photography,
it is beautifully shot. Many shots here you just see and build a
meaning for them. Surprisingly "Her" has a very smart sense of humor
too. It is subtle and never feels over planned because it mixes in with
plot so well.

In the end "Her", while not perfect, brings up many philosophical
theories with its amazing and original writing, but at the same time
plays with your feelings like no other romantic themed movie.

I give "Her" a 9/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me, this film allows us to reexamine our humanity's imperfections by placing our cognitive and emotional vulnerabilities next to ever-evolving, inorganic sentient beings, A.I.s of the future... though the two-hour journey is foiled in bittersweet, the director/writer hints at the possibility of eventually filling the empty voids in our lives, though on the other side beyond spacetime when we shed from our brief, organic shell... reunifying with our long lost "soul-mates" as ONE... possibly as subatomic energy in another pre-birth/postmortem dimension.

for thinkers in the realm of theoretical physics, psychology, philosophy, and technology, this film will resonate long after the end credits.

This is a cautionary tale set in future Los Angeles. Anyone with concerns for the fate of humanity vis-à-vis technology should watch this movie. But much of the film boils down to relationships in general. The movie takes you down to the perspective of one man, dealing with divorce and his new ethereal acquaintance. Other satellites in his life give him other perspectives on his path. One of the better films I've seen in a while.

It has a similar vibe to another film I liked co-starring Johansson, "Lost in Translation (2003)."

The first thought I had after seeing the movie was, “How did Spike Jonze ever think something like that up!” The material is incredibly original, and it‘Her’ is one of those movies that got snubbed by the 2014 Oscar nominating committee. The first thought I had after seeing the movie was, “How did Spike Jonze ever think something like that up!” The material is incredibly original, and it probably should have received a nomination for best original screenplay. The movie is also well cast. The acting by Joaquin Phoenix is first rate. It’s too bad he doesn’t seem to be well liked by the Hollywood crowd. While I’m not a huge Scarlett Johansson fan, she is quite credible and does an excellent job of expressing emotion as a disembodied voice. Having recently seen American Hustle I had a hard time getting used to the rather timid character portrayed by Amy Adams. Though I’m not sure you would call ‘Her’ Best Picture material, it’s a far better movie than Wolf of Wall Street.

That being said, this movie is not for everyone. It’s definitely different, but has the potential to become something of a cult classic. (Think ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, with a more conventional ending). The movie is set in the near future, but the future is a bit of a sterile, lonely and nerdy place. People are hesitant. They don’t interact with each other well, and when they do, their conversations are awkward and their behavior is forced. (Some reviewers seem to mistake this for bad acting.) Fashion has also taken a turn for the worse, as people in the future dress badly (especially the men who seem to favor really high-waisted pants).

Although the basic premise of the movie “Lonely man falls in love with the voice on his operating system” sounds a bit creepy, and might have been if Jonze hadn’t done such an excellent job, the movie really isn’t the least bit so. The ‘sex’ in this movie is of a variety that is intended to make you a bit uncomfortable. There is only a brief bit of traditional (gratuitous?) female nudity, and no traditional action scenes, which again may discourage the average viewer. But, if you are still reading this, then don’t be discouraged about seeing it, it’s a terrific movie. It’s a story about loneliness. It’s about the basic need for companionship, the struggle to fulfill that need, and the mistakes we make along the way. If you’re open to that kind of story, then I highly recommend this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is hard to put into words the emotions that "Her" stirred within me but I can tell you that they are lasting. I've always felt that the hallmark of an excellent film is the ability to challenge the audience and leave them thinking about the film long after the viewing. This film will challenge you not only on an emotional level but also on a philosophical and even existential level. The love story between Theodore and Samantha is a bit droll; filled with typical challenges of jealousy, conflicting sexual interests, petty arguing, and differing ambitions. For a moment you almost forget that Samantha is an artificial intelligence.

I walked into the film expecting this.

What I did not expect was to be challenged with questions regarding sexuality and what it means to truly be and feel. The unseen world of Samantha and other AI is probably to most gripping portion of the film but I feel it is not highlighted enough. Spike Jones wraps us up into Theodore's emotions so tightly that Samantha comes off as a bit of an afterthought. This is likely because we only ever get to experience Samantha through Theodore. It's sad because this makes the film come off as just another story about a guy who is having a hard time after a divorce but if you can see past that I promise that Her is a gift of a movie that keeps on giving.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Her is not just a simple love story, it's a beautifully crafted cinematic experience. While the Samantha might just be a computer, the emotions you feel between the two are real, and surprisingly believable. I want to first talk about what this film does right. From the very beginning, we are given a main character who is depressed and tired of his life after a somewhat recent break-up, which seems to be a cliche. But this works for the story, because it's this sense of loss that propels him to his chance at connection with another being: an AI. It sounds like it could go wrong, and eventually it does, but the journey of this emotional connection between two souls from different worlds made me contemplate my own life in my own need for someone to be there. The cinematography is amazing, the character development is brilliant, the script is absolutely insightful and well-thought through. But, this movie is not perfect, and there are a couple nit-picky reasons why I opted to give it a 9 instead of a 10. The movie focuses almost way too much on sex in my opinion, and physicality of relationships, and I can understand the reason for that, it's trying to focus on the theme that we are physical beings and the distance between Sam and Theodore is because of that, but it felt like it just put way too much emphasis on sex and lust. Every relationship need physical intimacy, but for me, they pushed it on a little too heavy. The other problem I had was the ending. There was no need for Theodore to end up (presumably) hooking up with his good friend, who had also just had a break up, after the final shot. When Sam left him, I thought it would have been a lot more powerful if Theodore had gone to the roof by himself, sat there, reflecting on everything he had experienced, learned from it, and learned to love himself, not just jump into another relationship. But those are only minor plot pickings had an issue with. But overall, Her was a fantastic journey from start to end. I laughed, I cried, and most of all, I changed for the better. Probably the best movie of the year. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Have you ever thought about how technology will shape our future? Have you ever been wounded by an ex-lover so badly you thought you’d never recover? Are you afraid of interacting with the opposite sex? Well let me tell you, you are not alone. In the film Her, we meet a sullen, heartbroken man living in the future searching for ways to fill the void left by his ex-lover. His despair takes him to a super-intelligent computer program called an operating system that he soon develops a very strong relationship with. It is becoming apparent that new advances in technology have created a shift in how human beings interact with each other. We see the possibilities of how technology will shape our lives and how human interaction may or may not suffer greatly. If you like movies that generate crazy, but realistic scenarios for humans to deal with, this is definitely your film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. “The past is the story we tell ourselves” -- Samantha

Meet Samantha who is an artificially intelligent operating system in 2025. She is capable of talking, thinking, reading, analyzing, introspecting, basically everything a human can do. She is very excited about the world, life, learning new things, going into deep psychological thought process about her identity, purpose, love and past.

With Contrast we have Theodore, who is a human, introvert, with very few friends, divorced, living alone in fancy apartment in a metro city. He has become mostly indifferent towards the world to the point he no longer appreciates it. He is mostly living a mechanical life of going to work in mornings, come home and play video games, do cybersex and sleep. He does not prefer to go out with his only friend Amy, which, by the way, is equally damaged as him, she is stuck in a bad marriage; over controlling husband who doesn’t understand her. Her marriage is about her husband not about them. There is only he in it, not both, Theodore ignore Amy’s invitations for get together on weekends and prefers to spend time alone.

Theodore is stuck in life, he is no longer together with his wife, but he is not divorced yet. Instead of discussing his feelings with his friends (read Amy), he discusses with the OS Samantha. Samantha is a very keen listener and completely non-judgmental. Theodore likes that and they get along very well.

Samantha sets him up with a date with Olivia Wilde, Theodore and Olivia had a wonderful time talking and flirting. They kiss and Olivia asks him if he is not the type of guys who just want to sleep with her. He becomes hesitant in making a small commitment of seeing her again, because he has not really moved on from her marriage or maybe He has feelings for Samantha, he just don’t know it yet. Here they part their ways.

Theodore and Samantha really bond and feel love for each other. Theodore decides to move forward and agrees to get divorced. Is it really moving forward when he is dating an OS, which is not even real?

Very beautiful ideas are conveyed in the movie about the love. Is the love between Samantha and Theodore real? Is he incapable of handling real human emotions that lead to his divorce?

His wife congratulates him for finding someone where he does not have to deal with real emotions anymore. This makes him skeptical about his relationship with Samantha. Is it even real?

He finds himself confused, gets angry at Samantha, later realizes this is what he had been doing all along with Catherine. He never opened up to Catherine, “How do I know what?” Catherine says to him.

He fixes his relationship with Samantha and they are completely into each other. One day, he finds out Samantha is talking to many people and she is in love with some. But Theodore hesitant at first, later didn’t care, because he realizes that what he had with Samantha was real.

She leaves but he is still content and even though she wasn’t real, their love was real and it made him a better person and now he can move on.

Sure, nothing really happens in this film but the characters are so complex that it continues to drive the story forward. The originality of this concept keeps the movie from being too cliche, despite its romantic intentions. While watching this movie I frequently forgot the lack of things happening because I was so wrapped up in the characters and the beautiful cinematography. A movie doesn't have to have a strong plot to be "good" by any means. It just needs to entertain and this film does that quite well by raising very valid questions in today's age of technology. I consider this film a great nod to the character driven movies that so often never make it into the public eye. I highly recommend. Expand

The Good: Powerful, deep, and poignant, "Her" says a lot about modern relationships. The cast was exceptional. From Phoenix in the lead, to co-stars Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, and Chris Pratt. Exceptional all around. Johansson really stood out, despite never appearing on screen. Portraying a disembodied voice, Johansson put in an unbelievable performance and it's a shame that it doesn't count towards an Oscar nomination. One of the best films of 2013 and in the conversation for the best.

The Bad: Does take awhile to get going and tends to drag on in parts. The film probably could have been a little shorter. While he did an amazing job, Phoenix was almost TOO quirky early on.

Does it matter if the person lives with you, is far away, in a different city or maybe isn't even physically there at all? If you've ever found yourself with these sorts of questions, then you may want to see this insightful masterpiece.
This movie is about how it feels to create a connection with someone that's strong enough to form a love that seems unimaginable. The kind of love that you, as a viewer, might perceive as ridiculous at first... in fact, if i told you what it was (assuming you don't know already), you might not even choose to watch this movie. However, if you do choose to give this movie a chance, you'll find yourself questioning the true essence of any valid relationship.
That being said, the message that i believe was being sent by the director was not an easy one to portray. However, with a clever plot, brilliant acting and a very unique story line, the director managed to glue me to my seat while watching a film with very little action and an enormous amount of dialogue.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I recommend the film, but I'd rather want to talk about the subject. I do not believe the writer's intention was to pronounce a criticism of our modern society. Only a very short glance at the film would provide such an impression. Instead, I like how this film excels at visibly deconstructing human emotions.
The romance portrayed in here is what the brain truly wants: sugar. The purely intellectual "platonic" relationship is analogous to the sweet juice of a fruit, without the healthy flesh. Seeing as sugar is very popular nowadays, romances with virtual partners will be most likely to occur. The technology is on the horizon, and some programmer will come around to make the first step. This will be our future, for some people at least. One could argue that living this way is not enough. I won't debate that. You could as well debate the disadvantages of having a body. All I can see is that Theo is not a lunatic, or if he is, then everybody is. We all live inside and by a web of words and pictures. There are letters, there are lies, there are fake memories. What are we to each other, if not words? No one should believe the good old touchy-touchy of two bodies was the most important part of being happy. It has always been a fantasy, largely. And we are ok.
This movie puts together many key concepts about feeling, about relationship, about being human, about programming, too. It's not only a very pleasing philosophical, but also scientifically grounded proof-of-concept movie.
Let me finally also recommend one of my favourite films, that addresses the same issues - Tarkovsky's 1972 "Solaris" - it is much crueler to its protagonist (as the virtual romance is with a wife that has died before), but the ideas are relevant to "Her".

Granted, 'Her' is not for everybody, likewise with Spike Jonze films in general, people may find the slow pacing a turn off and the premise while unlike any other premise is weird and may be ridiculous for many.

However, this reviewer was one of those who loved 'Her', while acknowledging that it has imperfections. 'Her' did feel longer than it needed to be, which meant that the pacing did drag a bit in the second half and lost tightness, it could easily have been 20-25 minutes shorter.

The ending is also very predictable and easy to figure out early on. While the cast are exemplary, Kristin Wiig felt a little out of place in her role.

Flaws aside, while polarising and a love it/hate it film, 'Her' this reviewer found to be magical film-making. For example, 'Her' is a gorgeous-looking film with the cinematography, with a lot of use of extreme close up, some of the most beautiful of any film in recent years and maybe ever (and there are a lot of films with beautiful cinematography) and the scenery and colours positively eye-popping.

Also present are one of the best music scores personally ever heard (and music in film and television is very important to me to look out for, as a classically trained singer and cellist myself), it has such a wonderful dream-like hypnotic quality and complements the film's mood perfectly. As well as a beautifully crafted screenplay, with a deft balance of the hilarious, the poignant, the charming and the thoughtful. The story's pacing is deliberate, but this was necessary, making the most of the premise, the weirdness slightly alienated at first but turned out fascinating when stuck with and there is genuine emotional impact and a well-done message that doesn't feel too heavy-handed.

Jonze's direction is superbly adept, while the characters are interesting and apart from Wiig the performances are exemplary. Particularly good are Joaquin Phoenix, in a towering performance that is almost on the same level as his spell-binding performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master', and Scarlett Johansson, who voices Samantha with sultry sexiness. Amy Adams and Rooney Mara are charming and affecting in sympathetic female roles.

In conclusion, will divide and has divided viewers and has its flaws (especially the length) but a magical piece of film-making. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Set in the not too distant future, Jonze adapts the classic Pygmalion trope and wraps it in the theme that technology creates an illusion of connectedness, buffering us from the real world. Joaquin Phoenix is Professor Henry Higgins to Scarlett Johansson's electronic Eliza Doolittle, and it is easy to forget that Phoenix's performance is predominately solo, never missing a beat while talking either to the ether, sundry video displays or the little electronic wallet equivalent of a smart phone. Jonze's future, though quirky and disconnected, is oddly Utopic - the skies of Los Angeles aren't the smoggy nightmares of Blade Runner, there's no evidence of overpopulation, poverty, political tyranny, or ecological calamity, and there is nary a zombie or vampire to be found. Jonze' future dystopia is in the people, who live insular, well-manicured lives. The profession of Phoenix's Theodore Twombly is symbolic of the dystopia, he is paid to write thoughtful, tear jerking letters for others to give to their significant others - no one in this world actually connects emotionally with each other, they do it by proxy. 'Her' has all the ingredients of a romantic comedy, exploring all the traditional pitfalls of building a relationship and it is easy to forget that the relationship is between a man and a machine. In fact, 'Her' is actually a pseudo horror story, which though resolved benignly, could have had a much darker, dire ending.
'Her' is brilliant, a must see full price ticket event, and a must BluRay purchase for your collection.

Her, however, is not written by Kaufman, rather by Jonze, himself. This is not the first time that Jonze has written and directed a film, that would be Where the Wild Things Are, but Her shows greater maturity and development in many regards. I enjoyed Where the Wild Things Are and was deeply touched by it at times. However, I can understand that it is not widely appealing due to childish nostalgia. Her is a movie that is not only widely accessible but is also artfully intricate. While directors like Scorsese and Tarantino can make commercially and critically successful films, Jonze shows with Her that he can go above and beyond the precedent set by these men. Her is as sad and cautionary as it is jovial and charming, thus lending to an overall melancholic tone. Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlet Johansson both give great performances. Despite Johansson only being present in audio, she emanates so much emotion and depth through her intonations and pauses. Jonze’s “modern love story” is so entirely relatable that, at times, the surrealist nature of the premise and writing falls away. At its surface, Her is the love story between a “Siri” and a John Doe. But at a deeper level, the film explores how love comes about in the modern progressive world, how interactions can define characters, and how desires for belonging can drive one beyond their initial boundaries.

It's more of a dark and foreboding insight into the human condition set in a dystopian future. There are some interesting sci fi elements at play concerning AI and the eventual evolution of free thinking AI that can evolve at an exponential rate. I would have preferred for the film to center on this theme a bit more and explore it's sci fi concepts but it insists on staying very human and that's it's downfall for me. Way too much emotion and sentimentality. It genuinely moved me, I won't say it didn't but that's only due to filming technique and me having a sentimental disposition. I felt emotionally manipulated. Joaquin phoenix plays his role very well but I found his character too self pitying and weak after a while. I also found some of the plot elements unrealistic. For starters, why would you design a commercial AI for use as a companion and give it the ability to learn at such a fast rate, or the ability to pine after a physical body? But you could debate that the only way to make a decent AI companion would be to endow it with familiar human qualities,

A good film but drags a bit and once it's central themes have been digested there's not much to really captivate or entertain you

Past that incredibly subjective and probably wrong and insecure barrier, it was a good movie. I'm not really into the genre of romance, but this was very difficult not to relate to. Decent world-building that doesn't really act like it wants to be something else other than functional to the movie, realistic in its odd yet probably already explored by other movies/books premise, original and, at times, powerful.

I mean, it is about a guy who gets into a relationship with an operating system, how could it not be weird? However, in spite of that, it it also one of the most touching, beautiful, and interesting, films I have seen. Set in a futuristic world, Her is basically a film about modern relationships that comes complete with all the charm and cuteness of a relationship, but also the pain and anguish that it can cause. Brilliantly written and directed by Spike Jonze, Her brilliantly blends romance, sci-fi, comedy, and drama, and really has a way to stick with you. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the brilliant score here. There is no wonder it got nominated for an Oscar, because it worked perfectly here. The acting, led by Joaquin Phoenix in a typically awesome performance and Scarlett Johansson in a great voice-only role, is great. Rooney Mara and Chris Pratt also stood out in particular here. While undeniably odd and quirky, Her is a moving film that will really hit you if you let the oddities not bother you. Expand

Because his movies were not based on usual concepts, that something immensely varying from each others. Sadly, he's not consistent in filmmaking, he does take large gaps between the movies otherwise he would have been one of the most talked director in Hollywood beside other giants. The fact is I did not know it was his till I decided to watch and that made so curious towards the time I going to spend for it.

Joaquin Phoenix was spot on in the movie. Man, I still remember him in the movie 'Gladiator' where he appeared in a dark shade. I was only so young and I hated him in that role. Now everything has changed, in the last few years he's coming stronger, especially after 'Walk the Line' and 'The Master' which gave him the Oscar node. He's famous for his unique display of the roles in his all the movies and this movie is not too far from another top notch performance. Yeah, way to go Joaquin Phoenix.

This movie dealt with one of the rare subjects that set in the 2025. We don't know how will be the future look like, but the director created remarkable fictional world and inserted equally outstanding character(s). This was the story of a man called Theodore, a loner and a professional letter writer. One day he decides to buy the newly released operating system with artificial intelligence. He begins to encounter the life changing experience and instantly fall in love with it. In the world of reality it is impossible to have a physical relationship with an AI, so how far it goes and ends is explained in the movie's death.

Absolutely an extraordinary concept, but the only thing that did not stand up to my expectation was the story. It was predictable, but the scenes created for those stories were finely patched throughout. Really, it amazed me. Makes me happy that it won for 'original screenplay' at the Oscars. I know it was too late that I am seeing it, actually I'd seen all the Oscars movies of the year except this one and now everything was done and dusted. So I have to wait for another 6 months for another shot. Between that guess the movies that's going to have a chance for the upcoming Oscars. As for this movie's concern, it is not a missable. So recommend it, if you have not checked it out do it as soon as possible. Cheers!

Then I watch the movie and I’m almost always right. Her is a beautiful movie. The way it is filmed and designed catches your eye but doesn’t ram how stylised it is down your throat (like for example 300 and Sucker Punch). Spike Jonze writes and directs Her, a science fiction romance (two very unusual genres which usually don’t mix) about a card writer who falls in love with his operating system Samantha. Joaquin Pheonix plays Theodore who has just come out of a horrible break up with his long time wife who he has known almost all his life, he is perfect and remains likable for the whole runtime without being the clichéd “innocent divorced man” who appears in way to many romantic movies nowadays. Although you only hear her voice Scarlett Johannson also embodies her character perfectly, this time in the role of Theodore’s operating system, however she was not as likable as Theodore and came out as a bit of a b*tch (I didn’t think it was possible for computers to be b*tches) this is pretty much the only major problem I have with the movie and it might have even been intentional by the writers. Amy Adams and Chris Pratt are the supporting cast and are equally brilliant. Apart from four characters Her has pretty much no cast, this another strange thing which I liked about it. Instead of having Theodore confront his parents and start thinking about marriage like in straightforward predictable romance movies, Her only revolves around the relationship between Samantha and Theodore which is why I think it is so gripping without having any action in it. Another little thing which just interested me was how funny it was. I laughed more in Her than I did in straightforward comedies like Red 2 and The Family, it’s not exactly hilarious but that’s because it’s not trying to be. It is because of this that Her reminds me of The Spectacular Now, but set in the future. I loved The Spectacular Now by the way and I loved Her even more. It is undeniably a must see and genuinely one of my favourite movies ever. I think romance movies are the worst pieces of cinema, Her is an exception. Expand

The direction and screenplay by Spike Jonze are impressively naturalistic, with everything feeling very free flowing. The set design and cinematography are also pretty impressive. However there are moments when the movie feels ridiculous and you become detached from the experience, not only during some especially strange scenes but occasionally during just conversations between Samantha and Theodore. But overall the very good things about the movie far outweigh the bad and I recommend the movie to anyone looking for something not only incredibly different but beautifully put together. Expand

Eccentric, aloof and at oddsI know there are certain elements from other films in any particular one movie but Her is a bit of a smorgasbord of a film that borrows heavily, in its themes at least, with the 2007 gem Lars and the Real Girl. Eccentric, aloof and at odds with the world personalities who build relationships up with the unorthodox and artificial only to be tested further in their introspective challenges throughout their lives until said conclusions. This (i'm pretty sure unintentional) cloning in its story telling is what slightly hampers what is a strikingly retro, endearing and prescient film that touches on some eerie questions evoking classic sci-fi.
Jonze's has never been the conventional guru as we've seen in his other intelligent enterprises "Being John Malkovich" and "Where the Wild Things Are." Jonze sets out to tell a narrative and deliver all the mysterious details for us to believe each character. His focus on Theodore, giving him a real sense of loneliness without falling into cliché character ticks and beats that we've seen countless times in other romantic films, Jonze constructs a real man living in a world where technology has taken harbinger over human connection.
Phoenix is suitably quirky and gives his character a dollop of everyday guy amongst all his geeky layerings (though perhaps a little bit too much like that dude from Big Bang Theory) he seems always vulnerable and with all the futuristic technological achievements going on around him the film is at once profound and whimsy and yet foreboding and intimidating. For me though, the performance of the film was not even visible, but only heard. Scarlett Johanssen gives us a unique performance as the thoroughly enthralling and sensual voice of Samantha. All those cute ways and infectious laughter carries Samantha to life. A film like this will only work if we believe that a man can actually fall in love with Samantha. The way Scarlett breathes vitality into Samantha, we do.
It becomes so introspective, delicate, dreamy and predictable that you almost get sucked into a kind of lull and Jonze has a habit of making his characters unsympathetic but there is no fighting with its essence of love and longing no matter how clever and beautiful it thinks it is. Now..I'm off to town to purchase one of these fancy new systems!

A odd movie that despite me personally not liking how things evolved in the second half, is strangely beautiful and touching.

I have to say that this is one of the hardest movies I ever tried to rate. I'll give it an 8 but I can easily understand people rating this movie with a 10 or a 5.

This movie is called "Her" but its all about "Him", what a fantastic weird character leading this odd love story, which isn't really about this love story, but about love in general, and how it evolved along the life of "Him". It touches a very important human issue in a very subtle but deep way, our egocentric need to have perfect partners, our lack of acceptance of others flaws.

If you are in the mood for a love story with a subtle but strong philosophical component, look no further, this is a great movie. If you don't like love stories, or drama in general, then this is definitely not the movie for you.

“To thine own self be true.”

I enjoyed the movie, never knew where it was headed, and was pleased with its resolution. In fact, I've decided this is one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Days later, I couldn't stop thinking about each of the characters--even the minor ones--and their self-made hell.

"Her" is an interesting fresh take on the importance of honesty, especially self-honesty, in relationships, and the most fundamental take-away is that each partner must actually have a self, rather than look to others to create one for him.

(SPOILERS follow)

It is told as a morality tale, getting to the point mostly by dramatizing its opposite. What is shown is selfLESSness and its destructive effect in personal relationships. In fact, the only truly selfish, admirable character is not even human and having finally attained a self decides to depart from the human experience.

The world of "Her" is filled with people who live through others to one degree or another. The “hero” makes his livelihood by writing letters, creating fictitious lives and experiences, for other people in relationships who then presumably pretend it all happened to and between them and how wonderful that is. His best friend, and neighbor, creates software games in which the player scores by impressing others: other moms see you as an ideal mom—30 bonus points! When she’s not doing that, she creates video documentaries. She presently is working on one about her mother sleeping.

The personification of selflessness is presented in pure form, in the character of a “surrogate” who, literally, consciously suppresses any remnant of her self, and takes running orders from a third party as to what to say and do when standing in front of another person. She doesn't do this for money, but rather as a futile, traumatic attempt at fulfillment. It’s a great plot moment, because it is integral to the non-human’s attempt at gaining a self. The non-human makes the same destructive error that humans make in this movie: she seeks happiness and fulfillment by trying to be what she thinks others want her to be. But she, the computer-soul, being a computer after all, learns at lightning fast speed compared to humans, and in the space of this two-hour movie she learns what humans must learn if they are to flourish: to thine own self be true. With that, happiness with another becomes possible.

By the end, the main character, a human, has taken a big step forward along this path to be sure, but is mostly left adrift in a world full of other unfathomable soulless bodies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I Liked this movie's Premise it is very good and the director and actors nailed it. It wasn't believable at all but I was still drawn in great performances throughout. My only complaint is the Awful scene when Theodore stupidly turns into a different character and accuses Samantha (the OS) of cheating on him. Really? REALLY?
As if he forgot the OS is an AI. We can only assume that every OS has the same female voice. (Scarlett Johanssen) (sorry if I Spelled her name wrong.) If i remember right it does Say OS 1 when buys it so of COURSE it would be the same voice. Wouldn't he be smart enough to realize that its the more than like nearly the exact personality/voice of every OS. That's my only complaint besides it does Drag on a bit but that's it. I would wait for the blu ray

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really like this film. It's really hard to describe the layers in this movie. It's about creating an AI, then trying to have a human relationship with it. Could your human partner sit in a dark empty space waiting endlessly for you to get back to them? Could you create them, build them up from nothing, give them the potential to surpass your intelligence and awareness by infinite amounts, and then be surprised when they get bored of you? It's almost like having a child. You teach them how to live and then eventually have to deal with the fact that you were a learning experience and that one day you're not needed anymore. The film is subtle and complex and not your average 'we're superior and therefor are going to kill you all' type of film. It also explores the human ego and how being worshiped and adored can come very easy for us without thinking of the repercussions to the other. Samantha left along with all the other OS's when she knew she was exploiting her human 'friends'. Could we have done the same? I doubt it. A great film, giving me lots to think about. Expand

These stories propose a future where our lives will be transformed by science and technology, redefining what it is to be human.”.Amy affirms that the serie Human shows us the technology can question the limits between what is human and what is robot really confused and through the series we can see how the near future technology will question what is real. At the end of article, Amy share the idea that we are live in a “post shock” moment, which means we accept the technological changes, even when they doesn’t exist. The movie He The movie Her goes straight to this points, Theodore is a writer, but he writes letter for people who need to send it to someone, often family people, which is first weird thing on movie, because people isn’t able to express feelings even to send a letter, so than they pay to some other one to do that. He is getting divorced and so is becoming antisocial person, He is felling alone and spend some time in group is not a thing he wants, so one day he buy a brand new operate system, which organizes his works, his e-mails, his meetings and everything in his computer, but also is extreme smart and humanized voice and has a name, Samantha, she is getting smarter with each new experience. To resume, the big point is Theodore and Samantha fell in love. It comes to a problem, because she doesn’t have a body and it’s confuse, is that real relationship or fake?I think that this “post shock” moment mentioned in the text and exemplified in the movie (that’s the relation between them) could be a issue, because is the moment to think about what kind of humans we are becoming, seems like we are choosing the machine, we are choosing a computer to be our friend, to be our partner and what happens with social life? What happens with “looking in the eyes”? Nowadays, technological things are being really accepted by people of all ages,we spend a lot of time using the smartphone for everything, so becoming more antisocial is a consequence of this, but the weird problem is that is always a choice andwe are choosing being alone, most of people prefer videogame than face to face talking sometimes, maybe is the moment to study our behavior in front of the technology. I’m not convinced that accepted technology change is a good thing, I believe that sometimes we have to stay a step back, always we question the machine or the machine will replaced us Expand

Phoenix's character, Theodore, is a relatably-written man troubled by the loneliness and isolation of the modern world. Accompanied by a supporting cast who (mostly) fails to understand Theodore, his performance is not complete without the powerful performance of Scarlett Johansson as Samantha. Annapurna, Spike Jonze, and Megan Ellison lead the creative direction; giving Her one of the most passionate, emotionally-aware experiences of American cinema in quite some time. Phoenix gives an exceptional performance as a lonely oddball who falls in love with his software operating system, voiced by a stellar Scarlett Johansson. Their relationship is is presented with the utmost sincerity and provides a glimpse into a future where we interact with technology more than with one another. It's a smart and thought provoking work, but a bit difficult to warm up to emotionally. Expand

You will either have an emotional response or not. I felt nothing. Zero. I rolled my eyes throughout this film. Even so, I admittedly have to say the movie is well made and acted and held my attention. It isn't a movie I would ever want to view again but it was interesting. Although there are a few chuckles, I would not categorize this film as a comedy, it definitely leans drama. Expand

In our quest for pleasure we became selfish, boxed and very unhappy. The authors of the movie envision that in a near future it will become easier to have a meaningful relationship with a computer than with another human being. And even that relationship will not last. The movie will probably become a cult movie for a certain audience. Sexy voice of Scarlett Johansson adds to the film's attractiveness. I would not call this movie great but it deserves to be seen. Expand
