Although the addition of interesting new characters that we did not see before the completely different approach to hellboy's paternal character lacks charisma and there seems to be no chemistry between hellboy and him. There's a lot of gore scenes that looks very cool but all of them feels very rushed without giving it the time to build up.
The interpretation of David Harbor is very convincing, even his makeup and prosthetics do not look bad at all, he did a very good job, probably the script and the direction in this new take are the problem. In the end it only becomes entertaining and fun moments, but without a doubt the vision of Guillermo del Toro was much more accurate to the characters and folklore that the comics transmitted.

I love this film!

It's what I wanted! King Arthur and CGI happens to be my thing. I very much loved the climax scene and I do hope a sequel can be possible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR - Give it a pass and re-watch del Toro's version once more if you have and instead if you haven't.

After the reveals of the production issues this movie went through it is not surprising to see the movie dwindle in quality from minute one to the climax. Setting aside my love for del Toro and Ron Pearlman, I really do like David Harbour as an actor and as Hellboy as well. The first half of the movie got me in as the secret clans plotting, Prof Broom-Hellboy's interactions and the Foul Mouthed yet terrifying if you ever seen one Pig Creature back story were all pretty interesting.

What I did not like is the train wreck of the writing and a lot of what seemed like editing issues as I felt many scenes just ended abruptly, this really put me on edge as it kept increasing through out the film. Some plot points also started going in weird directions like King Arthur's Blood line/Hell Boy's Half Human Heritage and Excalibur's importance, though I am not sure whether this is cannon accurate; it just seemed to come out of no where.

The CGI was decent and I didn't see any problematic eyesore CGI through out, with one absolute stand out of Hellboy with the flaming sword riding the Dragon; I wish that was a more fleshed out scene than just a vision as that was spectacular.

I always liked Milla Jovovich because she is pretty and I have a special so bad it's good place in my heart for the earlier few Resident Evil Movies. Similarly she did a decent job, here as an over the top Vampy villainess Witch. The Creature effects also were well done for the most part, Baba Yaga's Home was a particular standout. Weirdest possession I have ever seen though; if they were going for a gross out creepy vibe they hit the nail for Alice's Spirit Possessions.

But sadly all in all the whole thing put together was a mismatched puzzle at best, or a painting that the longer you look at the more you start seeing glaring issues that take away from being as glorious it should be.

While I did enjoy Hellboy 2019 more than I expected, it failed to leave any lasting impression... The editing and direction result in a film tone that flitters between horror, action, fantasy, comedy drama in such a way as to deliver an odd pacing that doesn't ever feel 'good enough'. Worth a peek if you have any interest in this kind of genre blend. Beware of the randomly intense and quite graphic gore sequences!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The reboot of Hellboy is the first time this year that I seriously started questioning my own judgement. Directed and written by two guys who have virtually no credits to their name and abandoned by the visionary, Guillermo del Toro, who made it possible in the first place, it’s hard for me to recreate the headspace I must have been in not just to walk into this movie but to have reserved seats for this film weeks ahead of time like a little **** Daniel Dae Kim is in this though man, David Harbour–you love that dude from Stranger Things–Milla Jovovich hasn’t aged a day, **** Odin is in this **** man, I must have said to myself before a truly mirthless two hours of exposition.

It’s hard to imagine now that we’re on the eve of possibly the biggest opening for a Marvel movie ever, there was a time when this was a big priority for me, but pickings were slim and we were undaunted by the 9-12% rotten rating it was receiving ahead of its wide release.

There are aspects of the film that even with the distance of two weeks I still find baffling. Like, why did the trailer place so much emphasis on a throwaway scene in the last two minutes of the actual movie? And, is that brilliant or confoundingly stupid? Why did the father-son conversation have to happen when Prof Broom was dead through a medium who inflates her organs into balloon people? Why was the Merlin scene essential at all? Did he need to come back only to shout at Hellboy for failing? And what reward did the witches who are holding that twig crown in that first Arthurian scene receive that’s so worth betraying Nimue? Because they seem to be skulking around real quiet-like with very little to show for by the time of contemporary events.

I’m left a little bit mad at myself for not having seen Missing Link or stayed home and flossed.

SeeingSo I really hate to have to say it, but I got to. This film is PURE trash. Between the ugly visual effects for Hellboy himself (he looks just god awful) and the non-stop over-the-top gore I can find nothing to like in this movie. Seeing this after watching the first movie over again did not help, because the comparison is just overwhelmingly in favor of the first.
Where do I start? Well I can begin by saying that they really never gave Hellboy a character in this movie. Throughout the entire thing he was either sarcastic, whiny, brooding, or just not very funny, but trying to be funny. He was never developed throughout the entire film, he just kind of was there. Things happened TO him but he never really did anything special, even in the end external forces were required for his choices to actually be made.
The over-the-top gore was just pathetic. The cartoonish fight scenes were just that, cartoonish. The original movie had fights, yes and they were unrealistic as hell, but they were not cartoonish (compare the fight between the giants in this film and Hellboy with his fight against the giant plant monster in the second film or Sammael in the first). The gore was just unnecessary filler to make people react to gore, it served no purpose.
The greatet thing about the comic and the first film was its mixture of the occult, myth, legend, stories, and real life. In this film they just seemed to throw around references to myths and legends to fill gaps in the plot. Baba Yaga? Sure lets add that. Excalibur, why not. Hell why not add in some Alice in Wonderland and Chupacabra crap as well. It had no direction, the subtlety of it was lost on this film. Everything was just spelled out and poorly.
This film is terrible. God can only hope it will never get a sequel. If you are a fan of Hellboy stick to the comics, the original movies, and even the animated cartoons. This film is just trash.

So leave your brain at home, get your massive bucket of popcorn and coke, sit back and enjoy this entertaining rubbish.

Open with a huge exposition piece narrated by Ian McShane, King Arthur uses Excalibur to destroy The Blood Queen, Nimue (Milla Jovovich) and scatter her body across the corners of the land so she doesn't come back and unleash a deadly virus that will destroy mankind. Fast forward to modern-day and Hellboy (David Harbour) is working with the B.P.R.D. to make sure Nimue isn't pieced back together by a hog like beast and take her revenge. Maybe early on the development of this adaptation of Hellboy they realised it was going to be terrible and decided to go full on with everything. The violence is ramped up to the max, the script is hilariously terrible. There's only one sequence that really worked for me, featuring a grotesque witch Baba Yaga, this scene shifts the tone of the whole film away from cartoonish comic book violence to dark and horrifying and then moments later Hellboy is back with the fairies and all other madness.

I'll give it one thing, I was never bored. But don't get me wrong, this Hellboy remake is awful, it could not be more of a mess but despite that I was still entertained. What it lacks in almost everything, it makes up for in pure violent enjoyment. I was part of the group that wanted one more Hellboy movie from Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman, just one more, finish the story and then reboot the whole thing. Well that didn't happen and the whole thing has been remade because that's all that ever happens now and the result is interesting to say the least. I feel Hellboy was always going to suffer without del Toro but with new director Neil Marshall who has made Dog Soldiers and The Descent I thought hey maybe this guy knows what he's doing. I'm not quite sure who to blame, him or the writer, it's someones fault so one of you has to take the blame. I've never read the Hellboy comics but from I've heard this film does them no justice. Which is a real shame because I love the idea of Hellboy, I loved the first adaptation by del Toro the second one not so much yet they're both better films than this remake. David Harbour is as good as Ron Perlman, I wasn't ready for the role to be recast but honestly they could not have gotten anyone better. Harbour does a great job, unfortunately the rest of the film doesn't live up to that standard. Recommended for those who want a movie so bad it's good, just make sure to go to it with low expectations and an open mind.

This time, it’s the red deviled superhero, Hellboy, getting the let’s try and do it over again approach. I have to start off by saying I was not happy at all when I found out that a reboot was coming instead of a third and most likely final installment of Del Toro & Ron Perlman’s series. I very much enjoyed what Del Toro did with both films and Perlman’s Hellboy performance was just near perfect. It deserved a bookend film to tie everything up and create a solid trilogy. So, with that being said, I attempted to walk into this film with an open mind and not judge it from it’s previous films. I was successful at times but couldn’t help but think about what was done before when watching this reboot. There are moments in the film that work well and some not so much. We are treated to a dark but very quick and morbid opening with Ian McShane’s Professor Broom, taking the role over from the late John Hurt. McShane is a great actor but he is no John Hurt playing this role. Hurt’s interpretation was far better I think and enjoyed his much better. Broom talks about the origins of the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich) and how King Arthur used excalibur to chop her to pieces and hide all of her body parts across the world in treasure chest containers. The opening works well enough but McShane just seems like he is rushing through dialogue during this which I found a little irritating. This is followed by Hellboy trying to recover a former partner who has been turned into a vampire. As the movie petals along, we are lead to explanations of the Blood Queen’s motivations to different set pieces with tons of blood and gore. I was surprised by how much gore is shown throughout this film. It almost seemed a tad bit overboard especially in the final act when numerous creatures are just tearing through civilians and doing it in very morbid and disturbing ways. The humor seems to fall flat a lot at times and only found myself chuckling at some things Hellboy said. This is where the writing in Del Toro’s begins to show why it was superior. It just seems like this film was made for more of a B movie audience as some of dialogue is cheesy and over the top. I didn’t have any problem with the VFX like a lot of other critics seemed too. There were only moments where some things that didn’t look finished but don’t think they were any bad or worse then Del Toro’s with the exception of he used a lot more creature works then this film does. It just solely depends on VFX for the creatures instead of costume and design. Harbour is likable playing the part and think he holds up well to Perlman. Jovovich is ok here with sort of a campy performance but still does the job. All in all, the film has some moments that work but the problem here is you can’t help watching this and thinking we deserved a final film by Del Toro before we got something like this. Del Toro’s films were just made so much better and when you walk out of this film, it just seems like a cheaper and weaker script than what we have seen before. Grade: C- Expand

Harbour doesn't have the same charisma and it's partially because his lines feel generic and with less humor. The action is very unequal, and tends more toward horror style than fantasy. Which I think is a mistake. The FX aren't on the top level here. Some composite effects are too apparent. The CGI of the creatures isn't always great. In that area, the movie is a complete failure to the previous movies. The music is fine. The audio is more than decent. I give it 48%. This is the story of Hellboy and his father running a sort of Men in Black assassinate all monster Enterprise. There are lots of special effects. Back-to-back-to-back. Lots of monsters. Unfortunately, a lot of them look like Muppets. Which is not scary. It's also not funny. There's lots of decapitations, stabbings and Gore. But none of it is very interesting. There's a scene between Hellboy and his father where he talks about wanting humans and monsters to live together in peace. It's probably the most real moment in the movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay, we had two Hellboy movies directed by Guillermo del Toro, one from 2004 and the Golden Army in 2008 starring Ron Perlman as Hellboy. Unfortunately, I didn't watch the whole two films, but some clips because I didn't have much time. The two movies were praised by critics a lot and the first one was rated 81%, the sequel was rated 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. And then, in 2019, Neil Marshall decided to have this reboot of Hellboy. They wanted to prove that Hellboy should be more modern with good effects and cinematography. But they had also gone too far.

Starring David Harbour was Hellboy, in this reboot, Hellboy had to battle so many monsters. Monsters here and there. There was so much action, these people wanted to make better cinematography so audiences would think that these battles are epic and unforgettable. The performances, I think they're okay but sometimes they sucked. Harbour's performance was really good, he's funny. He made most parts of the movie looked like a joke and kinda like a parody (because the cinematography's better).

I like the humor they added here. I did laugh, especially the elevator scene (up down up down). But Harbour wasn't as good as Perlman's. Then I like the make-up of Hellboy here more than the two previous films. Hellboy was more good-looking here (with long hair and small eyes). Those're the things I only liked about this reboot.

The special effects were really bad. They created monsters filmmakers could do in the 80s like the Gruagach or when Ben Daimio turned into a jaguar. They could've used an animal and add some extra parts. They could've done better in here. The editing was really not cool. This was like a few terrible movies wanted to have good cinematography but had bad CGI like Fant4stick (Congratulations Fant4stick on going way too far and got in the Razzies!). The cinematography was really awesome and if you watch this in IMAX, you would be entertained a lot. I watched the trailer in IMAX thanks to IMDb. I liked the lightning and the sky.

The fact that this movie was rated R was a BIG mistake. They did drop some F-Bombs everywhere, even when it's unneccessary to say the F word in a few lines. They also had some "Strong and Bloody Violence" (I could see these words in the trailer) like in "Deadpool" or "Logan", but they were needless. There were also people being ripped in half, people being stabbed bloodily by the giant monsters. Are they trying to prevent this movie from children? Huh? What? The movie proved that not all R-Rated movies're for adults and 18-year-olds. I'm younger than that and I could watch it with ease. I'm not afraid of anything. Are they trying to copy Sam Raimi's horror movies?

I really didn't know why this movie was based on the legend of King Arthur and the Excalibur sword. It was not suitable. If it is, I should've read the comics. I really didn't like the idea. They turned this whole action thingy into a fantasy like in "The Kid who Would Be King" was released earlier this year and I kinda liked it. Another problem was that they set too many characters in here. Too many actions scene from lots of characters fighting and they also moved from places to places (just like nomads).

This reboot was unneccessary to make. It was soulless but enjoyable. This was one of the movies that were really bad with black bars, good cinematography and sometimes bad CGI like "Fant4stick" or "Suicide Squad". If you find this Hellboy reboot entertaining, then I suggest you to waste 2 hours to watch it.

Decent “Hellboy” story. Though some scenes were kind of cheesy, this was definitely one hell of a ride! And David Harbour DID HIS THING!! More gore, more rock n roll, more BADASS!! I LOVE IT!!

This movie is NOT the del Toro version. It's not the Hellboy 3 most people wanted and are probably going to be angry that it's not. It's more true to the comics and has lots of nods to the comics and what happens in them. There is some issue with the pacing and it would probably make a better mini series, given that there is SO much content they go through, but it is a movie and they have to work with a time constraint as well as a low budget, which I think they took full advantage of. This Hellboy, as I said, is more true to the comics. It isn't perfect, but because so many people are just ripping on it for not being del Toro's Hellboy, I'm giving it a 10. It's more like an 8 or 7. It's very enjoyable and definitely rated 9. The graphic novel content is not watered down to be palatable for children, so don't take your kids. It's very metal and full of action. The creatures are amazingly designed and it's very true to the comics. Expand

But sadly all my hopes were quickly crushed. This movie is terrible from beginning to end. The story is a mess that takes to long to get going. the first half of the film is just a bunch of random people with no real personality trying to kill our lead, while the second half is your stereotypical story of villain trying to convince our hero to join them in there quest to rule/destroy the world. Now as bad that may sound the film still could have worked as long as it had good characters. Sadly the majority of the characters are uninteresting or contribute vary little to the story including the big bad of the story, The Blood Queen played by Mila Jovoich, who is supposed to be the all powerful evil witch but instead of intimidating she comes off as boring. But even that could have been fine as long as the action was fun and accelerating. Yet even that falls short. The fights are poorly done and CG is of a low quality. In conclusion if your looking for a fun action adventure with some supernatural elements than stick to the originals and stay far away from this hell spawn. Expand

Everything else is an absolute trainwreck, from the peripherals like the awful CG and bad soundtrack to the essentials like forgettable characters and a rushed putrid excuse of a plot. While I didn’t have very high expectations given the trailers Jovovich’s involvement (yeah, she’s generally in a lot of bad movies), and the fact one of the production studios for this film is bankrupt/defunct, I at least expected this movie to be enjoyable. In the end, however, this 2 hour slog fest may be one of the very worst of this year so far. The script is a mess. The direction is cheap and simplistic to the core, while the narrative and rhythm are pretty bad. The special effects are very inconsistent and the film's length feels excessive and that's partly because the story never feels right.
David Harbour tried but he's not even the shadow of what Ron Perlman did and the rest of the cast is as disposable as it is useless.

A failure with capital letters and undoubtedly one of the biggest failures of 2019

This new Hellboy reboot movie has a lot of negative reviews, but I enjoyed myself.

There's a lot of humor and action scenes in this. Gorehounds will be pleased to know that the R-rating is well deserved. They really run with the supernatural/fantasy elements and there's some pretty memorable visual moments.

I've heard a lot of complaints that there is too much going and the movie is choppy. I admit they crunch a lot of stuff in but in fairness, that's not too different than the Hellboy comics. Creator Mike Mignola often fits a lot of separate elements into a single story. (Let's be honest, he's more of an idea guy, than a planning guy.) Personally, I liked that this had a lot of things going on. Say what you will about this movie, but it never gets slow. Even though it's a kinda complex plot, I never got lost or confused about what was happening.

Rumor has it that there was a lot of behind-the-scenes conflict between director Neil Marshall (The Descent; Dog Soldiers) and the film's many producers. And, I can sort of see it. The beginning exposition feels like it was abridged and had a narration slapped on. It felt like in order to make things funnier, there was a lot of recorded dialogue added after filming which was a wee bit noticeable. (Though in fairness to the added dialogue, I may have been looking for it since I heard about the editing issues ahead of time. I'm also aware that now I've told you about it that you could probably be looking for it too and you may not have noticed otherwise. Sorry.) They finally manage to include a Hellboy character that a lot of fans of the comics will be happy about, but he or she is so wedged in that it doesn't feel quite natural.

I loved some of the creature designs in this. The movie includes some pretty creepy monsters. Unfortunately, this is a Millennium film and the budget isn't as big as a lot of the other comic book blockbusters out there. The computer graphics for the monsters are subpar. (A quick look at Hellboy is cut mercifully quick as it is so bad.) The quality just doesn't match the earlier Hellboy films, which are several years old.

David Harbour does a good job as the titular Hellboy. Admittedly, Ron Perlman does a better job of the human, emotional side of Hellboy, but Harbour is definitely funnier. Actually, the full cast is good. Comics fans will be disappointed that main players Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman aren't in this at all. But I credit the creators for trying to separate this from the original films. Hellboy's new partners in crime Alice Monaghan (Sasha Lane) and Major Ben Daimio (Daniel Dae KIm) are pretty likable. (Though I admit that Alice doesn't have much of a story arc and reason to hang around other than to repay a debt to Hellboy.) Ian McShane's Professor Broom, Hellboy's tough love foster father, is a real change of pace from the scholarly figure from the comics and other films, but it's fun to see the actor chew the scenery.

The best thing I can compare this to is the Constantine movie with Keanu Reeves. It's not a perfect product in the grand scheme, but there's enough fun individual parts that I was pleased. (FYI, be sure to stay through the credits.)

The first three quarters were excellent. The final act was a bit hokey, but that's a problem with almost all comic book movies. For a movie with hell in the title though, I think it's appropriate.
I don't follow the comics or remember much about Hellboy (2004) but I enjoyed this movie.
This is another movie that made me realize I can't trust critics (besides maybe Uproxx).
If you're looking for a good plot though, look elsewhere.
If you like exceedingly violent action movies with spontaneous comedy this might be the movie for you though.

This was, by far, one of the most enjoyable, epic, dark fantasy adventures brought to film that I've ever seen. Milla Jovovich was amazing. David Harbour was amazing. Daniel Dae Kim was amazing. Sasha Lane was amazing. You had a guy who transforms into a were-leopard and a girl who can punch the souls right outta the dead. There were elements of Evil Dead, Ghost Busters, and creature feature horror. This movie was so fun to watch that I will be buying it on blu ray. The story is a simple origin story, laying the groundwork for the ongoing plot surrounding Hellboy and his connection to the impending apocalypse. It also litters foreshadowing to events that will occur in a sequel while giving nods to events that have already happened in the comic. I hope it has a sequel in the future.

Critics have tanked this film's ratings out of misplaced camaraderie toward Perlman and del Toro. The actual quality of this film is very high. If del Toro's name was slapped on this production, I guarantee it would be given rave reviews.

From frame one, you're assaulted by this unflinchingly aggressive scent of a studio trying to differentiate its newest product from an older version. "Hey, NERDS! Remember those **** Guillermo Del Toro 'Hellboy' movies that you all HATED?! WELL, GET A LOAD OF THISSSSSSSS," the movie screams at you as you watch helplessly in your seat, now reduced to a fiery crater from the sheer volume of it all. Now, I was never a slobbering fan of the original adaptations, but I guess all it took was one woefully dull and haphazard attempt to top them for me to fully appreciate what Del Toro was trying to do with the character back in the mid-2000's. There was a nuanced caginess to the interpretation of the character, almost a profound sadness that resonated throughout the entire film, ultimately making for a feel that was unique, sardonic, and -- most importantly -- cool. Now, where there was once sadness, there is anger. Where there was once sardonicism, there is now camera-winking punniness. And where there was once nuance, there is now some poor bastard getting his skin ripped off his face. This is a loud, ugly, and poorly put together film, with just a few glimmers of competency: David Harbour's performance, some of the production design, and a couple of entertaining action scenes. Other than these things, though, it's gonna' be a no from me, dawg. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was not just waiting for this restart, I was hoping to see a worthy character rebirth on the screen, later, for a minute, eleven years after the release of the Golden Army. Disturbing bells about the quality of the remake have been received for a long time: the script merged into the network is frankly no quality, the news about the small budget, the Harbor itself as Hellboy, who for many after Perlman turned out to be a rather controversial candidate for the role.
However, despite all this negative, I still ventured on the first day of the premiere (04/11/2019) to visit the cinema. Later I had to regret it very much, because everything turned out to be much worse than I had originally expected. So let's go in order.

The plot, unfortunately, is the sore point of the picture. Instead of a connected and logical story, something vague and extremely transient turned out. Literally from the first minutes, such an amount of exposure and so little specifics are poured into the ears of the viewer that there is a risk of being tired of this already in the fifth minute. You can not wait for any thoughtful narration, disclosure of characters and immersion in the details of the universe, the viewer is mainly told, but not shown everything is extremely empty and superficial. The creators simply took a few plot arches from the original comic book and shoved it into a mess, also cutting it down before it. Locations change at a breakneck pace, the film just jumps from one to another and tries to show as much as possible, without stopping at the same time on something concrete and without complementing the themes raised by past films and the original.

Awful, wretched and, the saddest, giving a very wrong idea about the original essence of the character. Shame, shame and shame again. Ordinary viewers simply do not understand anything, the fans of the original will receive only extreme disappointment. Personally, the entire session is not that I did not show interest in the story being presented, but simply tried not to fall asleep. So everything turned out a second time, faded and gray. The typical Hollywood approach of recent years, when the whole essence of the original work is altered and shown so badly and superficially that one just wants to cry. I swear, it’s better to reconsider the dilogy from Guillermo for the five hundredth time, it’s just a huge gap in terms of the quality of work on the material and its understanding. the reasons for the popularity of the character, just a couple of times scrolling through the original comics, asking Minjol to work a little on the script and stuffing as many fan laura as possible, without even imagining how such highly dubious experiments will look like in two an ases (!) movie.
The acting game is an even bigger finish. All (except for the Harbor) play out with stone faces, occasionally make faces and clearly quietly laugh behind the scenes at the general absurdity and trash of what is happening. Most offensive for Jovovich in the role of the notorious Queen, because the potential was gigantic, but neither the character itself is not properly disclosed, nor the actress herself does not want to convincingly convince him. A harbor in the role of a feature with horns filed suddenly turned out to be the only advantage of the painting. Brutality, anger and threatening appearance are present, but spoil all the frankly poor attempts to joke. Obviously not the Perlman level, but close enough and, as an option for a future replacement, quite worthy.

“Adult” age rating was definitely not allowed where it should be. Instead of the personal drama of the character or the eerie atmosphere of the viewer, there will be an extremely unappetizing tresa rachlenenka and various variations of the word **** which in such a poor film simply cannot go to the village or the city. They do not add depth to the dialogues, the atmosphere (which is not there initially), too.
By and large, Hellboy of the sample of 2019 is not just a bad movie. This is the natural abyss of Hell, an absolute creature of Satan, something that should not exist in principle. The film is of no value either to fans or to, for the most part, ordinary viewers. Absolutely empty and meaningless attraction, trying only to parasitize on the mythology of the original. An attraction where there is nothing good except playing Harbor. Watch in the cinema? No, I don’t want you to repeat my mistakes. At home, when will it be released? The very thing, because the film can clearly trace how recently the notorious “Hollywood” has become lazy and degraded. I honestly wish this “miracle” even lower ratings from critics and a loud failure at the box office. Real fans obviously don't need such a remake.

OnlyNot particularly fan of the first established franchise, I've came open-minded to this new version and well... I've first seen it on original English language and was thinking this is the perfect example of what is an unnecessary reboot! Only that at least David Harbour is a pretty good Hellboy as Ron Perlman was and the gore effects was really enjoyable. Then I've finally seen it again dubbed in Canadian French, and this time I found it very funny! I must admit that's barely not the same movie than the original version. The voice acting are just awesome, particularly about Hellboy himself, the very gross and vulgar display of dialogues are just funny as hell. That's the first time I have a feeling like this after watching the Canadian French version instead of the original since Bad Santa. Of course the CGI are still very cheap, Jovovich's acting was still damn awful even in an other language and the final result does not looks like a film directed by Neil Marshall regarding The Descent or Doomsday. So if you're planning to watch the film in original English language this will possibly be disappointing, but if you're planning to watch the Canadian French version it's really well worth the watch! The low budget results in some poor looking CG, which is primarily used during fight scenes, and some awful looking makeup (Seriously who approved of this design for the new Hellboy? You need to get slapped). The acting is OK and it does feature a solid cast but that means little when they don't have the quality script to make use of them. The weak one-liners and needless cursing throughout make it seem like this movie was written by teenagers and not proper script writers. And let me make one thing clear: Ron Perlman is Hellboy. David Harbour doesn't even compare to the OG.

And as for why this film is such a commercial and critical flop? The studio decided to throw away Guillermo del Toro, who is simply untouchable as a director, in order to try to make a low-budget piece of garbage to capitalize on the want of a new Hellboy film. Yes, Fans wanted a new Hellboy film but one done by del Toro featuring Perlman, Not a reboot. Thankfully, The die-hard fans stepped up with a boycott and chose not to support this trash, resulting in it being a box office bomb. Maybe next time they'll listen to what fans want rather than trying to give them what they don't want.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A movie with strange pacing, disgustingly gory obnoxious scenes, trying too hard to be an action movie/comedy, and a plot that you need to understand by reading the comics, the Antagonist literally getting 7 minutes of screentime, makes you roll your eyes after watching this below mediocre excuse of a reboot and hop back to reading the Hellboy comics/Hellboy 1 & 2 Movie’s that were so great to begin with. If you want some gore-full and lightweight action, don't miss this movie by any chance.

P.S throughout the whole film I was waiting for Abe to make his appearance even when it became clear to me that he obviously wasn’t going to 'fully' be in this.

Nearly every minute has a punchline that no one in my theater would laugh at, which is just excruciating to sit through. David Harbour is far from bad in the role but his version of Hellboy leaves so much to be desired. Like every other character in the film, Hellboy gives us no reason to care about him. What makes this film watchable are the unique creature designs and some of the action sequences/violence. All the rest ranges from forgettable to terrible.

Now, I’m not a huge fan of the original Guillermo Del Toro Hellboy movies, I’ve only seen the first one, but I really like it. It’s action-packed, it has great effects, it has fun characters and it’s just a good movie. The 2019 remake is not a good movie. Like, it’s not the worst comic book movie ever made, not by a long shot, but it just has an overall feeling of cheapness. Some of the action was okay and I like the design of some of the characters but that’s about it as far as good things about this movie go. The story makes no sense, the characters are all boring and unlikeable and the effects are AWFUL!!!!!!! The prosthetics are okay, Hellboy looks fine (Except for the tail. It just hangs there and does nothing.) and I really liked this witch monster that shows up halfway through, but the CGI is some of the worst I’ve ever seen for a movie this recent. It looks like it’s from the early 2000s, not 2019! It reminds me of Van Helsing or Underworld or Resident Evil. Remember those? It’s just terrible! It also reminded me of Deadpool with all the violence and one-liners and it rips off the title cards that show the names of locations from the MCU movies. Clearly this movie is not as good as those. There are some good kills with lots of blood and guts in this movie and some wild monsters that show up that are actually kinda cool, but it’s all CGI so I have to take points off for that. The music was also kinda distracting. Overall, there’s just not much I have to say about this movie. It’s bad, but I didn’t hate it. If you just want to watch schlock, this isn’t a bad choice. I actually think it’s a little better than Venom. If you actually want a good movie, however, stick with the Del Toro films. Expand

To be honest, I was pumped for this film. But then the Rotten Tomatoes score came out...then I was less pumped, but still pumped. Then I saw the movie...well...

...It was better than I was expecting. But by all means this isn’t a good movie. In fact, it was one step away from being terrible. But it wasn’t quite atrain wreck, let me tell you why. This movie was really entertaining. On the entertainment scale, it’s super high. Probably late 70’s to early 80’s. The acting is pretty perfect. I don’t have a lot of complaints other then Milla Jovovich’s performance was bland and uninspired. Although it took some time for me to get used to David Harbour. Even after I was used to him I still was a little meh on his performance. And this could be a complaint or a positive. It depends on how you feel about it. But this film is messy. I mean messy. This is messier than Venom. And yeah, Venom was messy. But this film is messy in a fun way if you get what I mean. It’s not so messy you notice it one hundred percent. Now that’s pretty much where the positives end. I’m still gonna say the messiness is a minor complaint. But the real problem is the writing. Bad writing for both the characters and the film. They try to cram so much in here that the whole movie just gets lost. It doesn’t know what it wants to be. It’s cheesy, but it’s serious. It’s faithful to the comics, but some elements of the comics are just glossed over. (I haven’t read the comics, I watched YouTube videos. Expand

Loved it! Harbour won me over as HB. Added his own unique take, which stands out in the modern echo chamber of comic book movies.

Story is a bit of HB medley that stays mostly true to the respected and rightly beloved source. Don't listen to the haters. They're just a little scared and don't know what to make of a comic movie that has a few rough edges and doesn't come with mandatory hand sanitizer. They'll come around when they see it's cool to like the new Hellboy. We'll be waiting on them.

Just take a deep breath, try not to take yourself too seriously, and remember you're watching a Hellboy movie in first world 2019. Enjoy.
