The prospect of a reconciliation is the main, and indeed only, driver in a film that’s seemingly more concerned with illustrating the iniquities of our gross “comphet” (compulsory heterosexuality) society than bothering with anything so trivial as dramatic tension, character arcs or narrative subplots.

Capturing all the emotions wrapped up in growing pains, embracing the future and longing for what was, Oseman delivers a wistful conclusion to Nick and Charlie’s story. A mature and elevated swan song, the movie delivers a fitting goodbye while giving fans a glimpse at the perfect epilogue.

Glossy, dramatic, but always big-hearted, it is the kind of teen drama that offers an idealized glimpse of the future for queer youth at a time when that is sorely needed. It may not be especially revelatory, but it serves as a feel-good conclusion for a beloved show that will no doubt be many people’s comfort watch for years to come.

Tales like Heartstopper don’t just deliver a feel-good, fizzy love story (though it certainly does that), they remind us to value all our relationships while we have them — they can change so fast. But if you’re lucky, or wise, or both, that change can be for the better, and the people you know can surprise you, if you let them. And what better way is there to spend forever?

Heartstopper’s magic rests in its rosiness, but part of Nick and Charlie’s glow comes from the extended cast that Heartstopper Forever mainly ignores. The film isn’t without its aww-inspiring moments, but the odd pacing, relentless Easter eggs and montages often leave it feeling like its own fan cam edit as it attempts to put the neatest possible bow on the couple’s puppy love.
