It is true that it could be much better, and that important things from the books should have been included.

Nevertheless, it is a very good adaptation that opens the Harry Potter universe.

I will always have a special affection for this movie.

Final Thoughts:

Harry Potter would undoubtedly have been a classic in its book form, but, thanks to the cast and crew of the film adaptations, the series became a phenomenon. From detail-attentive storytelling to character castings that feel like the creators performed real magic to pull them from the pages, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone smartly uses its beefy runtime to tell an unmissable coming-of-age fantasy. A strong, old-timey feel creates distinct aesthetics, and John Williams’ musical score is a special magic of its own.

While it is slightly overrated, it's still the magical beginning of the Harry Potter Cinematic universe we all love to this day over 20 years later. The special effects were also good for a 2001 film.

The Harry Potter book series is consistently great. The movies, however, much less so.

The later films are not the greatest whilst the first film is an absolute masterpiece. Ironically it is one of the lowest rated. If you could travel back in time to the early 2000s you would quickly remember just how gigantic this film was. For YEARS, even after the 2nd film, it was this film that was constantly rerun on TV stations. It was HUGE and deservedly so.

The visuals are stunning, the pacing is fantastic, the dialogue is witty, the scary parts are truly terrifying, but most of all, the music is unforgettable and brilliant.

Harry's Wondrous World represents this movie so well. It makes you feel giddy with childish excitement while leaving you with an unmistakable sense of dread. JK Rowling owes a lot of her success to this masterpiece of a film.

This movie is based of the book, but unlike the book, the movie just skips the first part just so it can get to him going into hogwarts and all this wizard magic-ness faster. This movie is instantly forgetable, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Daniel Radcliffe is very likable as Harry, and he is given solid support by a funny Rupert Grint and a good Emma Watson, though she was annoying at times. The scene stealer was definitely Robbie Coltrane; I actually can't imagine anyone else playing Hagrid, Coltrane was just hilarious. Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith were also great, but for me the standout was the late Richard Harris. Now I much prefer Harris's interpretation of Dumbledore. He was soft-spoken, and actually fitted the part better. Both of these qualities were lost in the interpretation that Michael Gambon gave. I am not saying that Michael Gambon was bad, he just wasn't my ideal choice for Harris's replacement. The film is fairly faithful to its source material, and looks very beautiful. However, it is a bit long, and very young children may find Voldemort too frightening. I know because I have triplet brother and sisters who saw it, and couldn't sleep for about a month after viewing. In conclusion, a very good film, well performed and quite dark. 8/10 Bethany Cox Expand

Director Chris Columbus directing style sometimes becomes annoying because he gave the movie a childish theme and it sometimes fits with the movie and sometimes not so well. Columbus works with children who all enroll at the same campus, which makes him feel very delighted about his job, however, eighty-five percent of them are just consultants while the other fifteen percent are names JK Rowling put in her novel.

Little Daniel Radcliffe plays the orphaned Harry Potter who has lived for a decade with his callous cousins, the Dursleys, who have an opposing opinion with Harry when it comes to magic. “Magic” is a word forbidden in the Dursleys' residence. When magic occurs during a scene, we get to sit back and relax and watch the aesthetic philosophy of the Harry Potter world while charming and triumphant music plays in the background by the one and only John Williams. Harry Potter’s name is prominent in his new world, especially by his peers, which makes him feel astonished and questioned when he is introduced. Rubeus Hagrid, who brings Harry into the throng of Muggles and out of it into the throng of witches and wizards, substantiates Harry’s life origins and blissfully compasses him through his wizarding orientations. This movie shows us what it is like for a fresh student to enter a new league in education, (for a former child celebrity that is). This league begins at the age of eleven, which is like a child prodigy skips secondary school and begins college posthaste. It is also enough time to earn credits in college and end it at the age of a typical high school student, only with a master’s degree if they desire. This is a film that is so full of joy and delight that these children are overwhelmed to be out of a reality school and finally ready to learn about their future. From my point of view, the magical campus, Hogwarts, is like a school that is way more difficult than getting into Harvard, because it is restricted only to people who can manipulate motion, and it was established many centuries prior to Harvard just by looking at its furniture and construction. If you are interested in art or any kind of fantasy, definitely check out this flick; it is an engaging, triumphant, extravagant, charming, and overall envisioned motion picture event.

In fact, that's pretty much the film in a nutshell, magical. I must also place a huge emphasis on "cast" because every single actor and actress involved in this production were tailor made to play these characters. I couldn't think of anyone else in these roles after the credits rolled. Columbus' direction is also excellent; painting a picture of contrasting lights and shadows that clash to create a warm and welcoming picture quality. This is a film that continues to stay in my memory long after it is over because it excels at creating a believable fantasy world and characters. Luckily enough, sequels have followed to let us get more immersed into this world and the events that happen to the titular character. Congrats to the film crew as well as the author, J.K. Rowling. Throughout my life - school days, college, internet; I often used to see people going non-stop about Harry Potter (I think they are called Potterheads). Harry Potter this, Harry Potter that. So finally yesterday I decided to give it a try and oh my god, it's amazing! Why didn't I see it back when I had the chance to?

It is kinda unbelieveable that such a nicely detailed CGI movie was released in 2001. I know the VFX had grown a lot better since Lord of the Rings trilogy was also made at the same time, but still I was not prepared for it. I was expecting it to be just some regular CGI that didn't age too well. Trust me, if you haven't watched the movie till now, it hasn't aged at all. It can very much still be the selling point of the movie.

I had watched some parts of the movie, like the beginning where Harry's cousin was brought back home after he fell in the snake's cage and the Quidditch scene, but I didn't have any powerful memory of any other scene from the movie. In the scene where Voldemort says to the professor, "Kill him!" somehow I used to remember that scene to be the teacher first saying "What should I do?" to which Voldemort replies that. And I'm glad I didn't have any previous memory of this movie, because that way I was able to experience everything for the first time.

This movie has the 2001 movie's vibe to it, where the story is very straightforward and the childish background music makes it seem very easy to understand. I haven't seen any other movie of the franchise, as I'm going to watch the next part after writing this review. But I hope it stays that way, since it's very easy to understand and thus I can watch the movie on my phone while doing my work on my laptop.

Yes, this is my opinion, it is a film for children because it is magical, but that magic manages to make even adults become children again. John Williams does a "magical" job, an adjective that I will often use in my analysis. The first film starring Daniel Radcliffe boasts a cast composed of, to name a few, Alan Rickman, Richard Harris, Maggie Smith ... exceptional. The plot, like that of the book, is well curated and adapted to a mistral script. No flaw except, perhaps, that of having remained a faithful film and that has not, how to say, made the big leap, yet it is epic despite its magical normality. Rating: 8 (would be 8.5) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Of all the films I have seen, this is the only one I walked out of the theatre on. Mind you, I have tried to be selective of many films and there have been bland ones I sat through, I found this piece of cinema back in 2001 absolutely cringe-worthy. I have not returned to it since but everything about it struck me as over-the-top, child wish fulfilment. J.K. Rowling's book turned to celluloid may have sold millions of tickets yet this is nothing more than a trite rehashing of the numerous collective tropes of the culture industry. Chosen one as orphan. Quirky side-kick. Bold and brash female friend. Obvious nemesis. Chosen one is adept at everything. Yawn after all the checkmarks are checked. This is pure fantasy and evokes nothing mature or three dimensional. Aesthetics of the film are modest while the main actors back then struck me as stilted and clunky in their delivery. The seasoned professionals, some Shakespearean actors stood out as moderately genuine and dedicated to their roles while the child actors motored along with unemotional delivery. But no, their ability to act was not the point. This whole venture was to make the audience not only relate to the character but long to be them. The Harry Potter books were marketed for a younger audience yet really they were blatent cash grabs, feeding on the fantasy of the uneducated. I admire someone like J.K.Rowling for her generosity and work with charity with her earnings yet she is guilty of arresting the development of an entire generation and this film is a contination of that. There is nothing edifying here and when the scene in the film where Ron wants to sacrifice himself for Harry over the perilous game of chess, I had it. "Harry, it's you who has to go on." Barf. Mental food poisoning. This is tripe dressed up. Digest at your own peril. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my 7th favorite Harry Potter movie. The performances from the cast were stupendous especially Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman, Richard Griffiths, Fiona Shaw, Maggie Smith, and Ian Hart and the voice over performance from Leslie Phillips as the Sorting Hat was great. The visual effects were gorgeously done especially during the Quidditch game and the three-headed dog fluffy. The scenery and sets were well done and really cool looking. The writing, story and screenplay were fantastically done. All of the costumes were very nice. The filming of the movie was great. Also the film score was amazing. Expand

Faithful to the book.

This film is an adaptation of the first book of Harry Potter's saga, written by the British author J.K. Rowling. Directed by Chris Columbus, a man with experience in making films for young audiences ("Home Alone" is paradigmatic), this film has a very young cast led by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, in the roles of the apprentices wizards Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, while also features veterans actors of the British theater and cinema, as Richard Harris (in one of his last appearances in movies before his death), Maggie Smith and Robbie Coltrane, in the roles of Professor Dumbledore, school's headmaster, his main collaborator, Professor McGonagall and the school's gamekeeper, Hagrid.

This film marks the start of one of the most acclaimed and profitable franchises in the twenty-first century cinema, where several acting careers met its beginning or end. The film practically doesn't have a single negative note: he managed to pick up a book that was already a huge success and amplify it astronomically without sacrificing its authenticity. Anyone who has read the book recognizes it in this film and sees the book's magic gaining life, body and shape. The special effects, the details of the scenario, the costumes (any similarity between the school robes and the traditional black cloaks of university students of Portugal is not a mere coincidence, since Rowling lived in Portugal and has even married a Portuguese) all contribute to make us feel that this movie is the book we read and we have on our hands. Phenomenal, one of the best adaptations of a novel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a film that I have loved since the first time I saw it. All of the casting is absolutely perfect. This film is also very lighthearted compared to how the series progresses. The villain, Professor Quirrell is a great first villain. My only real complaints are that the acting doesn't work in some parts but the acting is nowhere near bad and some of the special effects are a little dated. In the end, this is a great first installment and my rating is 8.7/10 Expand

Sometimes when you're reading the book or watching the movie, you feel like you are right there with them. The storyline and plot is amazing. The personalities of the characters in the book are almost identical to them in the movie with maybe a few mishaps here and there. One piece of advice: read the book before watching the movie. In other words, it makes me feel awful to have to say something negative about what is a good start to possibly the greatest film franchise of all time. But I want to be objective. So, I'll try to just get the negatives out the way firstly and quickly: the film definitely has not aged well. Its PS2-worthy graphics are sometimes laughable, particularly in the troll and Quidditch sequences. In addition, the film sometimes struggles to cram everything into the short space it has - for example, that the first act with the Dursleys is so short is both a curse and a blessing: we don't get to experience the nitty-gritty early years of abuse suffered by Harry that is so well documented in the books - but on the other hand, it just means we get to the magic of Hogwarts so much faster. And finally, on a negative point, its decidedly light and almost twee tone makes it very much child-friendly, but may cause the adults to lose interest now and then. I'm sorry, but these things had to be said.

But let's face it - who cares? To anyone who's never seen or read Harry Potter before, this is the compulsory stepping stone in what turns out to be a most magnificent journey. So brilliantly crafted by Columbus and of course Rowling, Philosopher's Stone features some of the best acting talent Britain has to offer - special mentions going to Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, the late Richard Harris and, in particular, Alan Rickman as Snape - the role he was born to play. The sets depict almost exactly what any reader has ever imagined, and the kids - well - they're pretty bloody cute.

Philosopher's Stone is not the best - it's just a taste test. What happens next is delicious.

Until today, the only time I had seen any portion of a Harry Potter film was, I believe, this film in the car of a friend that had a dvd player in their parents car. It absolutely terrified me, rendering this a franchise that would get put off for a long time. Add in some parental worry regarding the depiction of witchcraft and it was obvious that this was not a franchise I would see as a child. As an adult, however, this became an inevitability and, well, the time has come. In this first entry into the series, The Sorcerer's Store is a Spielbergian film with a great sense of wonder, magic, and a child-like view of the world in which it inhabits that makes it a true expression of childish glee and joy, even when it can become quite cheesy and a bit hokey.

Those cheesy and hokey bits come at a few moments that can certainly be pin-pointed at the real lowlights of the film. The first is the Quidditch sequence. In 2001, the special effects in that scene were bad and they are somehow even worse in 2017. The flying as a whole is often quite rough, but the prolonged Quidditch scene is the most obvious portion that really fails to live up to expectations, especially because it is so long. Another bit that was a bit cheesy and cliche is the first act of the film. With young Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) dumped with his aunt and uncle after the death of his parents, he is constantly emotionally abused by his family with them constantly favoring their own son, Dudley. The exaggerated and cringy behavior of the family really never lands. It makes the audience hate the aunt and uncle, as they should, but it feels inauthentic and derived from a child's hyperbolic belief of how his guardians raise him, except it is all true. Overwrought and an entirely cliche way to introduce us to this magical world of wizardy, the opening is a rather pedestrian start to the beloved franchise. Finally, the ending is similarly pedestrian with the House of Gryffindor coming from behind after some last minute point additions. It is too much like a classic sports movie with the cliche of the protagonist team always snatching victory out of the jaws of defeat at the hands of the enemy - House of Slytherin, which includes Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) and is led by Snape (Alan Rickman) - to really work. It is too happy and cheerful for a film that had already ended happily. Letting Gryffindor lose in the first year would have been a nice touch, as it gives them room to grow even in the game of Quidditch and not just as wizards.

Aside from those issues, however, it is hard to rely find fault in the first foray into the world of Hogwarts and magic. Potter is a modern icon for a reason: his story is damn captivating. With a Spielbergian sense of wonder - just see Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) ride in on a bike akin to E.T. for how Spielbergian it becomes - The Sorcerer's Stone always delivers the goods. It delves into this world of wizardy just enough without ever diving into full-on exposition, instead it sprinkles in mythology every so often to really wet your palette. The refusal to divulge every secret of this world really keeps you hooked in and aching for the next installment to the series in order for more of those questions to be answered and more magical doors unlocked.

What makes the film so undeniably charming, however, has to be the cast. With young Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, leading the way, this deeply British cast always makes the film incredibly appealing. Though child actors, the trio of young leads strike the right balance between childish earnestness and strong acting. They retain that confused innocence of their situation - especially Radcliffe throughout, particularly before he gets to Hogwarts - without ever letting their performances devolve into truly annoying childhood roles. Alongside them, the reliable cast of elders deliver excellent performances. John Hurt is delightful in a brief appearance as the wand salesman. Maggie Smith nails her role as the headmistress, really possessing the right look and demeanor for a nice, but expectant headmistress. Richard Harris is lightly used as Dumbledore, but nonetheless a positive and friendly presence. However, nobody really nails their role like Alan Rickman. Reserved, cold, calculating, and menacing, he plays Snape like a villain and makes Harry's confusion regarding Snape's intentions all the more believable. Whenever on screen, Rickman steals the show.

This is not only thanks to the source material, but also the film's faithfulness to it, and the cast that backs it all up.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Also like most franchise starters, it fails rather dramatically in some story departments. Instead of a compelling sequence of events, we're left with a group of magical obstacle courses where the stakes seem somewhat forced and the reasoning is weak - even for my small brain.
VERDICT: It was a good start, but the franchise hadn't really got going yet at this point.

A young boy's lonely life is turned around when he discovers that he is a wizard in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", a story written by J.K. Rowling and adapted onto the big screen.

Daniel Radcliffe plays the title character, Harry Potter, who, as a baby, was left to be looked after by his aunt and uncle, along with his raging cousin, and they all mistreat him for years of his life.

Not long after Harry turns 11, a strange, huge and hairy man who goes by the name "Hagrid" (Robbie Coltrane) informs Harry that he is a wizard, and that his parents were exceptional students at a school named "Hogwarts", where gifted, magical youngsters are able to use their spells to their very best, and learn other new skills in regards to magic.

Harry begins to learn more about his past, such as the fate of his parents' death was caused a by a "Lord Voldermort", and how he managed to get the scar that is on his forehead.

Hagrid then decides to take Harry to the magical world of Diagon Alley, where Harry can purchase wands and broomsticks galore. After getting the essentials he needs, he then takes the train that leads directly to Hogwarts. It is there that he meets two other young students, Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson). He also comes across a very cynical young boy named Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) who proves to be one not to be trusted.

The movie is filled with wonderful imagination, and a sense of strong, individual characters that many will choose to identify with. Director Chris Columbus ('Home Alone' and 'Mrs. Doubtfire') crafts an amazing magical adventure that is enchanting and thrilling all at the same time. The young actors do fine in their roles, although, there are some room for improvement, but they are young. The movie is also very well paced and should hold one's attention for longer than possible.

It is an excellent start to one of the most iconic franchises of all time. You wouldn't want to miss it.

With all that said though it doesn’t make for a coherent film. The director is so caught up in establishing the world and hitting all the necessary plot points that he forgets to flesh out the characters. Harry isn’t that interesting serving more as a vehicle to get exposition about the world and the transitions between scenes are jumpy with so much emphasis on hitting the main beats of the film that the story doesn’t flow. At 2 ½ hours the film can drag a tad. While the film is nothing great that doesn’t mean it isn’t a pleasure to watch. Seeing the story of Harry Potter come to life was and still is a major treat and considering how popular the books are/were the fact that it was done this well is impressive they gave the fans what they wanted. And when you consider all the failed attempts at starting a franchise seeing one succeed is magic. Expand

The most loyal book to film adaption of the series. Everything is just spot on and there's truly not a single weak spot imo. It's just a wonderfully done movie that really brings the book to life.

I really like the darker tone the later movies were going for. This one is much more lighthearted. But my biggest concern with this movie is that it's not a focused movie. This movie is doing a great job introducing several things but while doing so it really forgets it's main plot with the sorcerer's stone. And that's why it really feels forced and weird when the movie focuses on that plot in the last half our of the movie. I also think younger kids won't understand all the stuff with the sorcerer's stone.
But still, it's not a bad movie. It's very entertaining, it's well written and looks good (even though the CGI really isn't all that great).

I read the Potter books, but I am not fanatic about them, that being said this movie is a solid adaption and started the Potter craze on the big screen. An enjoyable movie but not one that makes a lasting impression.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone had high expectations from the beginning – expectations from viewers who already loved the books and its intricate details. Such a viewer would be bound to notice the discrepancies and shortcomings which may affect overall enjoyment. But for a viewer simply watching The Sorcerer's Stone for the story and the entertainment may be in for a real treat.

The movie's strength is truly the story. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are a lovable trio that carries this enchanted world of wizardry to us Muggles in a way that we can only dream of being there. Hogwarts' enchantment is so spectacular that one may even forgive the movie for its, at times, incoherent and overly emotional plot. I will always love Harry Potter, but its best form is with every small detail showing through.

The soundtrack of this movie, however, was rather spectacular. Paired with graphics and scenery that shows wonders beyond our wildest dreams, this is where The Sorcerer's Stone wins. Marvelous details.
