I have to disagree with the large amount of votes here and say this was the worst of the Potter films so far. Even if you excuse the very slow start, the pacing was way off, and many characters were left just worrying about Harry rather than I have to disagree with the large amount of votes here and say this was the worst of the Potter films so far. Even if you excuse the very slow start, the pacing was way off, and many characters were left just worrying about Harry rather than being developed at all. I place a lot of the blame on the fact that screenwriter Steve Kloves was apparently moved forward to the more important sixth movie, and this movie was put in the hands of "Bed of Roses" and "Contact" screenwriter Michael Goldenberg. The choppy direction by David Yates does little more than attempt to sloppily mimic the two great directors that preceded him. Let's hope for better in the future. I left the theatre for the first time disappointed. Expand

It bothers me when in a movie transcribed from a book, little details are rearranged and altered for no reason, and that seemed to happen constantly in this movie. I know that for times sake this must be the case, but why couldn't Moody show Harry the photo of the Order, and why did Cho rat the DA out, and why wasn't Sirius simply stunned instead of Avada Kedavra'ed, and why hasn't Peeves been in any of the movies, therefore preventing the Weasley's from uttering what is arguably the best line of the book, "give her hell from us, Peeves." The entire end of the movie was terrible. What happened to Harry screaming at Dumbledore in his office? What happened to, "Harry, I'm going to tell you everything." These were big moments in the book, and some of the most emotional, and they were reduced to nothing. The thing that probably bothers me the most, however, is Dumbledore. He has none of the wit and charm he possesses in the book. Bellowing "don't you have studying to do?" and being visibly pissed off in front of students is nothing something that is completely uncharacteristic of Dumbledore. Expand

I'm not going to say that the magic is back. It's finally arrived. The cinematography in Phoenix is astounding--scenes ebb and flow like the spells they're depicting. Of course, there was definitely room for improvement, for example the lack of a better fight scene at the end, and Dumbledore being completely different to the book. I wish Richard Harris (Dumbledore in the first two movies) was still with us, he did a much better job. Apart from the few negatives though, I think Yates did a really good job of balancing pure film-making creative license, i.e. choosing which parts of the book to exclude, and staying true to the book. It couldn't have been any longer or it would have started to bore people, and I think each of the important bits of the book were touched upon FLUENTLY. Compared to other movies where scenes tend to jump around alot, this movie was very fluid. Not a 10 for the reasons stated, but definitly a solid 9. Expand

The first 2 were boring, and the 4th was way to abbreviated for a book with so much going on. It was like Cliffs notes. With "Order" however you get that same painful abbreviation but book 5 itself was a bit drawn out and boring in that it was bloated with superfulous nonsense more than half the time so there is plenty of fat to trim away, leaving the movie as a more focused, sleeker version of the main story. Is it better than the book? No, absolutely not. One of the biggest problems with the "trimming" is that as emotions run high in book 5 and the movie focuses on action and Voldemort (the main story if you will) the emotional build up of Harry's struggle with his destiny and just growing up is lost in the fold leaving you a bit empty by the end, however not nearly as empty as the unimpactful death of Cedric @ the end of "Goblet", so it is an imporvement. The movie cerainly has it high's and low's but I would say "Order" is easily my second favorite of the movie franchise after "Azkaban". Which says alot as "Order" is my least favorite of the books. I have read all the books to date and have also seen all the movies (god knows why as most of them have disappointed me) and this Film has to be the second worst. after the third being the worst. ill explain my Views. the third being the worst as the main story of the book was twisted and rearranged into the film it screwed up the book. and this new film disappointed me as it missed out much of the plot and most of all the final battle although may have been ok in the film the Book version is longer and more thrilling therefore 3 times better than the film. on there own the harry potter films are all fairly great but. as some one who has read all the books. they are on the bulk unfaithful and miss seriously important parts of the plot. my advice if your one who loves the films read the books. they are much better. if you have read the books but not watched the films. then don't expect much or if possible avoid the films p.s 4th and 2nd films are the best. that saying the second film missed out a vital part of the story that did not add much to the 2nd film/story b But does explain a lot in the 6th book those of you who don't know what I'm on about its the cupboard in the dark shop that harry ends up in that is in fact a teleporter which leads to another teleporter inside the room of requirements. The previous four have been mostly disappointing. The first two were a product of a director who had no idea how to direct children and relied on cheap thrills to cover horrible dialogue and flow (to which I blame those who adapted the book to film, not the source material). The second was more of the same, with even worse acting from the youngsters (I blame the director again). The third was the best of the four, despite what many will say. Cuaron made Harry Potter in to a respectable movie franchise. His art house style of directing turned off many of the mainstream crowd, but he was able to save a plot that involved nothing more than Harry saving his uncle. The fourth lacked skilled direction, though was exciting enough to be the most enjoyable. I had not expected the fifth to be the most well done and most exciting. The book was easilly the worst of the series, being just an 800 page set up for the next book. But the movie, under a no name director, makes the characters very real and the storyline very relevant. It doesn't take longer than 5 minutes of this film to understand that this fictional England full of fear, disillusion, and paranoia is our world. In terror, we, like the wizard world, give up reason and our trust to authorities, and horrible things can happen. And while the book lacked any real story, the movie moves at such a pase that you never notice, but you get in to the characters. The climax can not be understated. It was amazing. With the showdown at the end, wizard duels have become what they should have been from the beginning. They have done for wizards what light sabers have done for jedi. Despite what those who wish for Harry to live in a wonderful world of magic and tame adventures might tell you, I'm ecstatic to hear that David Yates will be directing the next movie, and possibly the last. He has come the closest to making Harry Potter the movie series it begs to be. Expand

Jumpy scenes; legions of characters introduced for seemingly no reason other than 'they were in the book', even though they contribute very little to the movie; pointless special effects scenes (how many times do we need to see Potter and his friends flying around?)... the list just goes on. Potter directors need to stop trying to wow us with special effects, because modern movies CANNOT be carried by CGI. Try inserting some flowing plot or intelligent dialouge next time, instead throwing together of this disjointed, boring, mess of a movie. While it missed key scenes and emphasized plot lines not really that emphasized at the time (such as romance) it did a good job of representing the overall themes of the book and the continuation of the series. For mine, it was too short. Yates tried to make this a kid friendly length but in the process, rushed one of the key moments of the series in the end part. The book also failed to explain the prophesy point and the link between Harry and Voldermort which would explain a lot to people who haven't read the books. However, the movie was well acted, generally well structured and flowed well. It's humor sections and drama sections were well achieved, cinematography and editing were adequate. You can see the development of the young actors in this film, this is by far the best acted film by the young players in the series. For all those complaining, read the book first. My verdict, good, not very good, not average, but good. Expand

Ahhh... got to be the only schmuck with a subject line like that for a 'Harry Potter' movie - but think of the intent behind "Joy" and you've captured much of the feeling of the audience's reaction walking out of the latest 'Harry Potter.' Though it's madly efficient and quite often exciting, squeezing in 850 pages of text into the shortest Potter yet, less than 140 minutes, this fifth installment is decidedly more dour and grim than the previous installments. A recurring theme of the past films has been the teamwork that has made Harry, Hermoine and Ron such a formidable trio. The later two take a backseat in this story so that the depiction of Harry's melancholic internal struggle can be front and center. Thankfully, the prevalency of the book's most devious and clever creation, the fascist middle-manager Delores Umbridge, has remained intact. Imelda Staunton, her family name quite appropriate for such a niggling squat character. Gosh, how I adored the emittance of her high-pitched squeal - intended to be friendly...instead such an assault. Also, like always, the film makes grand usage of its exemplary all-star British cast - everyone getting an opportunity to interact within the rich Hogwarts universe. Especially noteworthy are watching Branagh's old flames mug it up under heavy makeup. Never dull, the film flies by... but by the end of a special effects laden climactic battle we realize how unimportant this story in the grand scheme. In effect, I felt a bit used, and my urgent desire to want more from Rowling waned. Expand

Each of them, including I was going to write that this is the best of the HP films, but as I reflect further, I think that sentiment arises chiefly from lowered expectations brought on by how disappointing the first four movies have been. Each of them, including Order of the Phoenix, leaves me shaking my head thinking of opportunities lost. It seems like the various directors have a check list of plot points from the books that they feel must be covered, regardless of whether they work cinematically. Again, Order of the Phoenix is no exception. I wish at least one of the directors would have had the courage to try to make a great movie rather than make a film of a Harry Potter book. For a "good vs. evil" film to really work, the audience must have an opportunity to get to know and detest the villain. On a day-to-day basis, the most constant villain in Harry's life is Snape. Yet he rarely gets a line and never gets screen time without Harry. As a consequence, he never becomes anything more than a stick figure - certainly he is no where near "real" enough to hate. The same goes for Draco Malfoy. If the movies spent as much time developing the dark side of life at Hogwarts, Harry's victories at the climax of each book would be much more significant and moving to the audience. On the plus side, I thought Radcliffe's acting was much improved, Helena Bohnam Carter was a welcome addition, and the cinematography was excellent (best since Prisoner of Azkaban). Sadly, the actors playing Ron and Hermione are still terrible, and Michael Gambon completely fails in showing the wisdom, kindness, and wit that make Dumbledore such a delightful character. Expand

Rowling has engulfed us in. Yates is a horrible directing with the beginning scene nothing more than a child can portray. [***SPOILER**] The script and scene writers have ridiculed the book leaving out every single point exept the battle between voldemort and Potter. Within the first few minutes Potter was safe again at his poor Sirius house, this angered me with this taking over 80 pages which showed Harry confusion and anger towards his situation, Quidditch plays no further part in this movie which is also a large majority of the book. Hagrid sudden intrusion into the centre stage is not stabilised as there is little communication with Potter, Weasley and Granger showing why he wasn't there. Also this scene takes place during Quidditch is on in the book. Cho is portrayed as the traitor when it was actually Marrietta, Cho's friend who betrays harry to the ministry official, Dolores Umbridge. Cho is not shown as a very emotional person throughout the novel exept during their defensive class and their meating at Hogsmeade with Rita Skitter is also absent in the movie. With the expectation people had to viewing this film many of our expectations have been thrawted by the way this movie was shown and its less than proffesional director. I for one felt very upset with the way this movie was portrayed and this has led me to the aligations I have put foward in this text. This is no joke, nor a contest, I am just dissapointed by this performance of the world's greatest book. Expand

Perhaps the Harry Potter saga took seven books to tell; it sure isn't supporting as many movies. This is easily the worst of the Potter films, full of moments that feel been-there, done that both within and outside the series itself. The narrative structure is identical to the last two films and is tired here; Harry and company endure trials leading up to a confrontation with Voldemort. But the writing and directorial approach is a step backwards from the increasingly grown-up and complex execution of the previous installments. Harry's centralization feels forced and false, while the previously razor-sharp Hogwarts faculty seems to have been lobotomized and de-fanged in the face of a silly foil. The climactic wizard-battle is poorly executed, feeling like an out-take from a Star Wars prequel before the CGI backgrounds were finished; the death of a key character -- which should be the emotional punch the movie needs -- carries little emotional resonance. Of course the basic premise is still hugely appealing, and the actors continue to grow into their roles, but overall this is a huge disappointment. Expand

What the hell has happened to Warner bros!!?? This movie puts a masterpiece novel to shame. The only similarities between the novel and the movie are the names of the characers and places. Nothing else! Music (if there was any) is the weakest point of the movie!! Story... I'm a die hard fan of Harry Potter but watching this movie makes me very drowsy. The ootp novel is one of the best but looks like this movie has been made by a bunch of people who have just lost everything. It's so dull!! Acting... This time Daniel has improved a lot. Rupert and Emma were good as usual. Imelda as Umbridge rocked but I think she was given more than enough screen space. At the end of the movie I was tired of watching her but it's the fault of the newbie screenwriter and director. Gary Oldman as Sirius was fabulous. Watching Harry and Siruis together was a real enjoyment. Michael Gambon as Dumbledore was a little better but still Richard Harris was the true Dumbledore. May he rest in peace. Direction... I'd only say that David Yates ruined it! Visuals... They were ok. Nothing extraordinary. The end fight which was the most hyped was the most boring in the movie especially the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort. Why don't they stick to the book?! I feel like crying!!!! The only nice thing about this movie is the acting and the scene when Voldemort gets inside Harry. Expand

It did not do the books justice as it was far too short and did not include some main elements, such as the wit that Rowling manages to carefully exert into her books. It somehow manages to keep our interests though, because as the movie goes on, we find ourselves hoping for more. The ending was...understandable, although I would have preferred the ending written in the book. Nobody other than Harry was supposed to find out the prophecy, and I believe that this is a key feature in the books as Harry in later books learns how important love is. One would think that after playing the same character for four straight movies that these young actors would have identified more with the frustrations of the declining state of Hogwarts along with pressures of tests that define their careers and tension of struggling friendships, but instead we are left with bland, confused faces as if trying to remember their lines in each scene. Not entirely their fault however as the performances of the young cast are only out-stunk by the terrible script. Again, it must've been a tough feat to fit roughly 900 pages into a 2+ hr movie, but not only does the story not incorporate the tension between Dumbledore and Poter, an important tone to the mood of the book, but each scene comes off entirely too serious without any emotion and not in the least bit connected. Nearly without exception, all of the low scores justify their assessments as reflections of the movie's failure to adhere to the book (and even change the book in parts). Well, kids, I'll tell you what a "4"-rated movie would be--an 81/2 hour visual carbon copy of the Rowling written work. Good heavens that would suck (and would lack any creative exercise). Anyway, after 4 movies, one would think the kids would understand the necessary challenge of altering a book to become a movie. Now, for my assessment of the movie as a movie: It's the best Potter film yet. "Phoenix" is the first movie to really grasp the main characters as living, breathing, modern humans--rather than as transposed caricatures--and connect their humanity to the viewer. It was more than fun or entertaining--it was emotionally charged and compelling. Book lovers (of whom I am one) should be able to separate themselves from movie lovers and judge each on its own merits. Expand

Ron gets about five sentences and otherwise is forced to lurk in the background. Hermione just seems pointless, when she's so important in the books. And I think if you added up all the seconds the Hogwarts staff appear in this movie, you'd have, like, two minutes tops. The direction is a mess--really choppy and taking great big leaps in story so that you're left wondering why or how they got from point A to point D. It's like it wants to be a sleek and sophisticated action movie, and forgets that these stories take place in a richly imagined world of magic, where KIDS are supposed to be the heroes. Dumbledore and Voldemort fight like Yoda and that Christopher Lee character in Episode 1. Why? I've seen that fight already. This should look more interesting and new. The movie also looks cheap! (I mean, compared to the last two films.) It looks like they skimped on the effects budget. The final Ministry of Magic sequence is mostly black backgrounds and receding rows of orbs, like a big black storage buliding. The last 20 minutes were also shot to be shown in 3D on Imax screens and you can tell that they sacrificed making a good action sequence to just churn out "it's coming at you!" shots of magic wands and Death Eaters. Staunton and Rickman (Umbridge and Snape) both rock, though, and Luna looks and sounds exactly like I thought she should. I don't think this director knows or likes the Harry Potter books, deep down inside. Expand

Yes, the book dragged out a lot. Unfortunately, a lot of what made the book so good was the multiple subplots, and great setup for the final battle. For example, when Snape throws Harry out of Occlumency lessons after Harry sees his father bullying Snape, there's a huge sense of desperation in the book - not in the movie. There's also an incredibly important subplot of Ligilimency being used to trick Harry into the whole thing, and so on and so forth. Even aside from that kind of stuff that only people who either are huge fans of HP or have great factual recall will care about, the whole movie seemed rushed. The entire part prior to Dumbledore leaving was basically a bunch of snapshots of various events, with no cohesion in my opinion. Mediocre movie at best, absolutely terrible in comparison to the books. Expand

It was the longest book, yet the shortest movie. The previous four movies left things out and changed some things around, but i feel they did so without compromising the integrity, plot, and accuracy of the book. But OOTP changed way too much. Some little things were only changed for the sake of changing and would have taken about thirty seconds longer to do it the correct way (a.k.a. in the movie neville finds the room of requirement by chance, when in the book harry asks dobby if he knows of a place where they can go, and dobby suggests it). And some bigger aspects of the book were also changed to fit the movie (a.k.a how Cho Chang was blamed for telling Umbridge about Dumbledore's Army, when it was really her friend Marietta who was nervous about getting caught. This is a major plot change, because in the Sixth book Harry has another thing with Cho, which according to the movie would be highly unlikely now that he thinks shes a traitor)(in the battle at the department of mysteries Lucius Malfoy never has his hands on the prophecy and Neville is the one who drops it causing it to break so no one can hear it. oh and also at that moment in the movie, Sirius punches Malfoy? I'm pretty sure he has a wand and could have done much more with a simple Stupefy!) Also things were changed that were pre-established in the previous movies (the look of Sirius' face in the fire when talking to Harry in his dorm. the look of the dementors). I feel the new director really let the die-hard harry potter fans down with this poor excuse for a harry potter movie. Expand

I am a huge Harry Potter book fan. I am one of the weirdoes that actually like Book 5 but Mr. Yates and his screenwriter trashed this adaptation. It was over edited, rushed and choppy. It failed to tell a good story. While Radcliffe's acting has improved, he is still lacking in emotional range. Is Harry a one dimensional character? Radcliffe's facial expressions are so limited it is either blank or he's yelling (with blank looking eyes). I saw Equus and it was the same. I suspect he gets critical acclaim because so many people are cashing in on his coattails. I want him to truly earn the millions he's making. Even the fabulous performances of Imelda Staunton and Alan Rickman (he can do so much with so little screen time) couldn't save this movie for me. What made this one so good was the emotional range of the acting as well as the script which allowed such acting to take place. I thought for a while that this movie might actually make it to perfection with its perfect special effects and its depth of characters. There were however a few small flaws. One was they totally glossed over how Potter and gang out into the Ministry of mysteries department. Two was his new love was never reconciled with nor included in his support at the climax of the movie. Lastly after all battles were fought won and cried over the emotional verve just seemed to wane away. Now I don't want you to get the impression this was not a outstanding movie cause it was. It's just that it was not perfect. Oh well, it will give them something to strive for in the next movie. I have high hopes after seeing the characters really blossom in there roles. Good Job guys, gals, and all who were involved. There's a lot to be proud of. Expand

The worst HP movie yet. Absolutely horrible acting; but, nice special effects as usual.

It's not advisable to make a movie over three hours long, because after that it's a wee bit too much to watch on one sitting, but ironically three hours of movie isn't quite enough to sum up the plot of a book as long as The Order Of Phoenix. Despite it's length, in many parts it feels like the story is rushed to the next key point, and many aspects of the book (f.ex. quidditch) have been completely dropped off. Because the storytelling in the movie is processing with such fast pace, it may be hard for people who have not read the actual book to follow the quick advancing of the story. You should judge the movie by it's own merits, it is decent work as a visual captivation of the Harry Potter- universe, and a nice supporting view in parallel with the one you yourself have created in your mind while reading the book. As a stand-alone movie experience however, without reading the book, it is merely an average piece of work. Expand

No Neville seen as who he really is with his parents, or Harry's emotional breaking point that was supposed to be in the end, every magical rule laid down by the books broken, ugly single-tone sets, and the battle near the end removed of any tension and set in a flat-out horrid environment that has no light source but from the characters themselves. The points are for Radcliffe in the sections where he expresses his frustration of Dumbledore's lack of attention, and Umbridge, who is just as evil as I pictured her. Expand

The fifth film's decent but it feels rushed and doesn't seem to flesh out the story as well as the others. Still worth watching if you're mad about all things Potter.
