It is one of the darkest and most emotional films in the series and really does a great job leading up to the conclusion. It is beautifully filmed and acted and happens to be very faithful to the novel. My only warning is that if you've never read any of the novels, the film will be hard to understand at some points. If you haven't read the book, do so. It tells the story better than any movie ever could. Expand

Deathly Hallows Pt 1 is definitely a breath of fresh air after having 6 movies take place at Hogwarts, as the setting is more of a traveling fantasy movie.

Obviously there are many things differing but they seemed to capture the essence of every major point from the book... at least up to the point of the break before the final installment. It's tough to give the movie a perfect rating because as an individual film, it obviously lacks the conclusion that's provided in the last film. Nonetheless, awesomely done and I can't wait to watch the final film in the series! Expand

The first year out of Hogwarts. By far the darkest and deepest entry yet. One almost feels unsafe when the main characters are out and about. Anything could happen. This is a highpoint of the HP films.

It was a resounding, "what?" I wasn't sure if that would be the best idea in the world, because even if the book is pretty long, is it worth two movies? The answer is "yes." "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" (which I'll probably just call "Part 1" for the rest of the review) is well-acted, well-filmed, visually great, and successful in its darker tone and mood. Even if it doesn't stand as the best film in the franchise, "Part 1" is a great film that fans of the franchise will absolutely enjoy. Expand

'Deathly Hallows: Part I' is an incredibly well-acted and visually stunning precursor to the franchise's final installment and serves as a tense character-driven penultimate film. However, it can't help but feel like an obvious prelude.

Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort's immortality and destruction--the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart. Meanwhile, the wizarding world has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort's Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. But the one prize they still seek is the one most valuable to Voldemort: Harry Potter. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort...alive. Harry's only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale--the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks. Little does Harry know that his future has already been decided by his past when, on that fateful day, he became "the Boy Who Lived." No longer just a boy, Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with Voldemort. Expand

I saw HarryJust for the record, I love the books(for a while Philosopher's Stone was a huge favourite of mine) and I personally like the films. None of them are masterpieces, but they are likable, entertaining and I think well made too. I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 with high expectations, there were many friends of mine who said it was brilliant and the best yet. After seeing it with my family last night I have to say Amen! This was a wonderful film in my opinion, and it does a very good job sticking to a mammoth story. I also think they made the right decision splitting it into two parts, if they hadn't the result I think would have been too rushed.

If I do have a criticism here, I do agree that the pacing is rather slow. I think it started and ended brilliantly, it was the middle where it dragged with a lot of admiring the scenery. As beautiful as it was, it didn't admit much to the story.

Criticism aside, I adored the production values. The darker scenes were indeed dark and somewhat bleak, especially the beginning at Malfoy Manor where it looked like a film noir, while the scenery in the middle of the film was gorgeous. The music was another delight, it was sweeping, grandiose, majestic, for me the most complex and most atmospheric of all the Harry Potter movie scores. The script is an improvement too, not that it was terrible in the other movies, but especially I thought the humour was better judged(ie. Moody's comment about the polyjuice potion), while the story despite the slow pacing was never less than engrossing.

There are a few scenes too that I especially liked. One was Dobby's death, I thought it was heart-rending. Dobby was so lovable and funny, and in this instalment cute too I think(loved the trainers), although I knew it was going to happen I couldn't help shedding tears. I think what got me were his last words, they were so poetic and touching. Another was Godric's Hollow, like the former I knew it was coming but it was done in an atmospheric and unnerving way I couldn't help jump. I was also taken with the first "obliviate" scene, the regret in Hermione's face and voice made it incredibly poignant, while the 7 Potters chase was both funny and thrilling. My favourite though was the Three Brothers animated sequence. I was wondering how they were going to do that, and after seeing that scene I have to applaud the writers. It was a clever and beautifully done sequence, with some haunting images especially with death. Harry and Hermione's dance got mixed reactions in the cinema, some thought it was awkward and others like me liked it, at that one I thought they were going to kiss which I don't think would have gone down well.

Yates's direction is also much better than it has been. It wasn't bad in the other two films, but here it looked as though he took real charge, and all the pivotal scenes here were in general wonderfully handled. The acting is mostly very good. Daniel Radcliffe is likable enough, and Rupert Grint has great comic timing. Emma Watson I think gives her best performance of the series so far and she steals every scene she's in, while Alan Rickman while not in much is deliciously suave and dour. The two standouts for me were Helena Bonham Carter, whose Bellatrix was powerful and sometimes even scary and Ralph Fiennes who was really quite creepy sometimes without saying much at all. Bill Nighy's Scrimgeour is good but not as memorable, while I do think they wasted the Dursleys.

Overall, a rock solid film that ended in a perfect place and my personal favourite of the series so far. In fact, it makes me all the more excited for the next. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Rowling, and was directed by David Yates. In this film and the next, Yates reaches a point of true excellence. Always supported and anchored in its central cast, virtually unchanged since the beginning of the saga, he will use all his wide budget to create a true masterpiece divided into two films, two parts of a whole practically perfect.

Warner Brothers showed all his talent and capabilities with regard to the computerization and use of special effects by advanced computing techniques. Also the actors reached huge levels of psychological complexity and dramatically performances, especially the three protagonists, involved in a triangle of love and jealousy that exists only inside the head of one of them. The hunt for the Orcruxes will be a challenge for everyone and will, eventually, test the three characters like never before. They are out of school, away from the castle (which never appears in the film) and will have to use all the acquired knowledge to overcome their challenges.

Drama, romance, jealousy, pain, a confrontation with a hidden past of Dumbledore and three talismans that can change the fate of war. As the saga moves to its final moments, will become increasingly mature and truly tense, almost a thriller for youngsters.

The scenes are pretty good,I like the action scenes for me,my favorite part is the motorcycle chase, when the Death Eaters starts attacking in the sky with multiple Harry Potters, but it's more compelling to the other three films like Sorcerer's Stone,Chamber of Secrets, and Order of the Phoenix. The screen is changing back to the same effect like the Order of the Phoenix (Sometimes it change the screen all the time with each scene that turns bright, dark, blue, and happy, when I saw Harry Potter films. I don't know? It's why they set up too much,if you feel happy or depressing while you watching.) It has some scary scenes that made me scare the whole time and it's very emotional that every movie got killed by those beloved characters and I won't spoil it for you,it's really sad. The story is very good and it needs some time when the new one is coming by for the finale of Harry Potter must face against Voldemort. The seventh movie is really done well and it's a great film that they show Harry is becoming as an adult and he could actually be a brave guy, that's really important for us that we watch the entirely films that what we read entire series. ThisIs it me or are the films of this franchise getting better? I don't claim to be a fan of the series (actually I don't really care about the books in the slightest), but as the years go on, the movies are becoming more enjoyable for me. This film won't appeal to as many people due to the dark tones, but I feel that it fits the mood very well and does something that many mainstream, big-budget films fail to do: the tone and mood of the characters fits the severity of the world/situation that they are in. This is by far the most gloomy/depressing one yet; with Harry and his friends slowly descending into the darkness with each moment as all their hopes begin to fail. To me this is reminiscent of The Empire Strikes back (my favorite of the Star Wars movies) which leaves you with a somber feeling at the fact that the heroes don't come out on top, but manage to just scrape by. Of course this is all setting up the finale for a "come back", but that's pretty much to be expected. The journey there is very meaningful; although there are moments that are weak here and there, but that could also be that I'm not aware of their significance to the past and current events of this very long series. All in all this movie kept my attention and I'm glad that it didn't try to soften that harsh reality of their situation, which makes me live for the day when they hopefully mete out some much needed justice to Voldemort and the somehow eviler Belatrix. I'm definitely looking forward to the finale... Expand

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" does exactly what it is meant to do--develop characters and create tension in anticipation for the great climax that will be coming in less than a year.

Is there some action? Yes, but only enough to create more tension. The core of HP 7.1 revolves around our three young heroes (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) and their dynamic relationships with each other and the world at large as Voldemort steps into the driver's seat to create a kind of world/empire not unlike the Third Reich.

Moviegoers should already have a strong grasp on the franchise and its characters by this point, and you assuredly will not be disappointed. Those who are not familiar with the characters or what a muggle or a horcrux is are better off skipping over this one.

First I'll actually start off with what was bad about it. Since I'm someone that hasn't read the books and has only seen the films, I found this a tad confusing at times. This is partly because of the way that the film is paced. It dives straight into an action sequence right at the beginning, the rapidly slows down throughout the rest of the film, with another brief action scene at the very end. This slow pace did make it drag on a bit at times, but strangely I felt that the movie went along fairly quickly despite being almost 2 and a half hours long. Now onto what was good about this film. The CGI is definitely the best it has ever been. Some of the scenes looking pretty stunning. Also, the acting is as solid as ever. Daniel Radcliff and co put on an excellent performance once again. The main positive though is the atmosphere that was built. It did a great job in building a dark, but well rounded (unlike Half Blood Prince) atmosphere to the film. This is definitely a great film to see if you are a fan of the franchise. Expand

Nonetheless, in it's own way, this film is a success. Dark, captivating, and visually stunning, it gives us a better look at the inner worlds of the main characters as they set out to find Voldemort's horcruxes, and makes us start looking at the Wizarding World, with all it's wand-waving and spell-casting, much more seriously.
The down side is that it was rather dull, emotionally. The scenes that in the book appeared moving were rushed through and did not leave an impression on the viewer. Turning a blind eye on this, Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is one of the best Harry flicks made.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's obvious that this Part I was going to be "unfinished". But the film wasn't bad... It was good! The problem was that all Harry Potter movies end in a good way and this was the only one that didn't... It was a little boring in the beginning... And we all expect the last movie to be awesome! I think Harry Potter franchise has been passing thru a lot of steps... we've got the ''children'' one (Chris Columbus)... that it's almost the book itself but... it was intended to be seen by children... not a decission of Columbus himself but JK Rowling's books. The we've got a ''poor'' one from Alfonso Cuaron (3rd movie), it has funny stuff but no so much at all. Following... Mike Newell's one... which give more ''attention'' to adults, because of the movie of course, but it comes from the book also. Ok then. And then we've got David Yates starting from the Order of the Phoenix... don't know neither if it's the fact he came when the story plot was gaining more... maturity, nor if it was just him... but the movies have been raising from there a lot. And here is almost the last prove of it... it really comes as no surprise after watching the 6th movie that this one was gonna be a success. But... in my case, even saying that this movie is terrific and really powerful, it kept a lot of things aside... like important events in Dumbledore's life (if you read the book you know better, or in this case, you KNOW something), while the 6th (which tell us the life of Lord Vodemort) is more accurate to the book and tell us what we expect (if we read) or what we need to know about Voldemort's life (what ends in his propose in real time). So... good enough to be an ''epic final'' but not better than the Half Blood Prince. Expand

In this, Kloves could make a great script that appeals both fans whose worry too much about fidelity to the book about the fans who prefer a movie that flows well (like me). Yates proves to be the best director of the saga, and hits in all scenes, including creating beautiful scenes like the dance between Harry and Hermione and when Harry visits the grave of his parents, scary scenes like the house of Bathilda Bagshot and great action scenes like the battle of the seven Potters. In terms of performances, it's also the best one. Radcliffe finally shows a nice dramatic flair, Grint won't disappoint those scenes (and still shows its good comic timing). However the highlight of the trio goes all the way to Emma Watson, as her character Hermione also gets an interesting highlight in this chapter because it is the best in magic, it is she who takes care of Harry and Ron on the journey in search of the Horcruxes. And Emma doesn't disappoint, delivering a fantastic performance (the scene in which it erases the memory of their parents is one of the most beautiful of the saga for sure, thanks to her acting). The older actors do not appear much in this, since the movie focuses on the trio most of the time, but it doesn't disappoint in small moments in the scene (as always Raplh Fiennes as Voldemort is fantastic). Technically, is not the best of the series but is one of. The visual effects, Oscar nominations, although they are well used, are way far from being very realistic (the Chamber of Secrets, Dobby, was better than the new and the Prisoner of Azkaban, dementors, were much more realistic). The art director Stuart Craig has always been perfect, and that, even without the backdrop of Hogwarts, is still very good (the landscapes are gorgeous, and some scenes of destruction are great), deservedly nominated for an Oscar as well. The photograph although not as good as the Half-Blood Prince, is beautiful. But the coach will focus entirely on the soundtrack of Desplat. Many fans were calling for the return of Williams for the final chapters of HP, and I can say it was good he didn't return. Williams could hardly write a novel as beautiful as that Desplat composed. Besides beautiful tracks, Desplat also appears to be able to create good tracks for scenes of action and horror. Expand

The filmmakers stretch out for it quite far, but they reach it. Since the end is coming, they try and put as much as they can in it. Trying to stuff back in what they left out in the previous chapters. Maybe it was a miracle, maybe it was with new producers J.K. Rowling's help, but whatever it was, they succeeded. From the start of the film, I can tell they have advanced in their film-making ways. No more depending on the greatest and never tiring land of Hogwarts to save you anymore. They must bring something new to the table, but making us feel just as much as watching a Harry Potter movie of any others. Whether the film felt like a trailer for part 2, or not, there is no doubt that the film can still satisfy any hardcore Harry Potter fan and critics. However, may not do the same for those entering the Harry Potter world for the first time. Those newcomers might just expect a cheery group of kids at a magical school, and everything is wonderful in the bright world of magic. They were quite confused on the absent of a magical school, and the dark talk of murder and soul philosophy. The characters aren't these little kids anymore. The filmmakers perfect in drawing out all the character development created by Rowling. It was perfect in a character aspect. Overall, this movie is a little more than your average blockbuster. It is based on half a book so you can't fault the movie for having no real conclusion or resolution. The first half of any story is usually comprised of the build-up before the big finale and that's what this movie is. It's a build-up, and cannot stand on its own until the second part is released. Part 1 is a movie with flaws, the biggest of which is its pacing problems. The first 40 minutes are action packed and frantic but soon things slow down and stay that way for most of the movie. I don't want to judge Part 1 too harshly for this, however, because it is in the unfortunate position of being one half of an adventure. Other than that, I found this movie very enjoyable, with all three leads giving their best performances of the series so far. The emotional toll and tensions of life on the run were well-handled and made for a more mature movie. As I mentioned, Part 1 is a strange movie to review. To enjoy it, the viewer must accept the compromises the filmmakers had to make. Expand

A much darker outing than previous installments resulting in a more direct approach all the light-hearted and cheerful themes are long gone bar a few funny comments to break the ice at times. Part 1 of The Deathly Hallows picks up from were The Half Prince left off with Harry, Hermione and Ron on the search of Horcruxes to bring and end to Voldemort once and for all. The start is frantic and doesn't mess around with a chase through London very well shown as the dark forces hunt for Potter. However very quickly the focus switches purely to the Harry and co and their quest for the Horcruxes. I was worried about the setting as for the first time in a film Hogwarts is not at the heart of things but any doubts I had were soon forgotten and thus really drives at home that the protection they were all once under is truely gone! The search for Horcruxes sees Harry, Ron and Hermione face danger at every turn they, under false identites, head to an infiltrated Ministry. However their quest takes its tole as the effects of a Horcrux are shown by Ron who wonders off half way threw. During this a clever scene involving Harry and Hermione dancing which was a great inculsion to lighten the tone ever so slightly. When Weasley eventually returns it leads to the destruction of a Horcrux but leads to the unravelling of an old myth - The Deathly Hallows. As the pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place Harry is now aware of exactly what Voldemort is after. The climax to Part 1 left us with a teary-eyed goodbye to an old favourite and with a minor cliffhanger setting things up perfectly for the enevitable emotional finale and the final chapter of an epic series. Part 2 can't come quick enough! Expand

That was rather a nice turn of plot from the chosen-one, uber-retarded theme of the past.

Harry isn't so special, he just lives in special circumstances. Nice save JK.

Anyway, the cast give solid performances, cinematography rocks, effects are great... good fun all around.

Honestly, I think Emma Watson is the most interesting talent to come from the franchise. I like guys, but can't wait to see what she makes of her fame(cache), she's just a treat to watch!!! Is it just me, or is she a force we'll see on the silver screen for some time to come?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a huge fan of Harry Potter (books and movies) but today I'm reviewing from a normal person's point of view. I thought that some of the action scenes were a bit cheesey and corny. It is one of the better Harry Potter films, but not the best. Dobby is one of my favorite characters and seeing him die was so sad that I almost cried. I can't wait for Part Two the finale. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can sorta understand why this penultimate installment to the HP film series was received so tepidly. Much of DH Part 1 is spent milling around, looking for horcruxes, and it doesn't do much justice for those who haven't read the book. Many people may just skip this one in favor of the impeccably epic Part 2, but there's still much to be enjoyed in Part 1 - the only difference is that it tells more of a human story than an adventure story. Ron's insecurities and resentments rear their ugly head in the form of the locket, and we watch as he comes to terms with them and makes his peace with his friends. Dobby's death is made all the more heartbreaking with the addition of a few choice lines of dialogue, and the climax in Malfoy Manor is satisfying enough. The appeal lies more in the scene's emotional execution than its actual action. Expand

This movie gives a real impression, really, but there are many details that make this not quite good.
It has a good start, a good fight to avoid boredom aerial fast.
The film is very tense and accelerated to give you that excitement comes from despair and anxiety, but the pace has accelerated, many incoherent things about the plot, I will not say them because if you read the book and see the movie you can give cueta what they are. It incoeherente with the series, not the movie itself.
The acting is good but many of the cast are still acting like it's supposed to be your scene, many scenes are very raw and should act as unique are the three main characters really were glorious this time, they have proven to the world grandeur film but the ones I liked were Rupert Grint and Emma Watson really make the viewer feel that anguish, fear and fury of that journey to defeat the Dark Lord, but the rest of the cast does not align very well and paper consumption that's a good problem.
The special effects are good, make it look all relista movie, the music is good but loose, is very good and disturbing scenes with street style and adult can enjoy especially people who do not usually like this kind of movies Adaptation is the best of the series, even if inconsistent with the series, but ruling that the film is consistent with itself, arguably no need to read the first part of the book, only if you do not want to confuse you with the characters but generally not necessary.
It is a good movie worth watching all the public, is entertaining and is the most mature of the entire Harry Potter series. You must see it.
My Score: 8.0

A mysterious movie that has entertaining scenes and an spectacular story.

The opening scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is great and exciting. The movie is very well made and the actors couldn't have been more awesome as they are, and the story is spectacular. The movie also contains some humorous scenes that I really enjoyed. The negative things about this movie is that it contains to much slow scenes that doesn't got a high amount of action, which made it a little boring. Another bad thing is that the movie itself didn't contain anything new or spectacular, and I think it might could have happened more in this movie, but also that the music could have been more touching.
Even though this movie contains slowness is it still a great movie, because it got an awesome ending and the movie overall felt mysterious well made.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I gets a 8/10

Rowling's longest "Harry Potter" book, so the safe choice was to split it into two movies. Obviously, this means that the first half would be least eventful, and the second portion of the story would be fast-paced and always moving. 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1' is a haunting, effective, emotionally stirring and chilling chapter into the iconic franchise. We see our main heroes; Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) running around alone in the woods looking for more horcruxes to destroy. Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) has also planned on how he is to attack Harry, with the help of Snape (Alan Rickman) telling him where he might be at all times. This informs that Harry is unsafe, and even anyone who knows him is also at risk of getting killed since they are to tag along with him on their journey. There isn't much to the movie's premise as it does mostly follow our three heroes running in the woods, but what I loved most is that, without the overlong presence of Fiennes, Rickman, Maggie Smith, Emma Thompson etc. this movie gives more room for Radcliffe, Watson and Grint to showcase their emotional weight for their characters. You feel exactly what they feel, they are confused, angry, upset... a whole roller coaster of emotions just escape these characters, and the actors play them well. This might not be everyone's favorite "Potter" chapter, but it's definitely worth seeing if you're a fan of acting and atmosphere. Expand

This movie is of course the setup for the last movie. And that causes things to go really slow, since one book is spread out over two lengthy movies.
This movie starts off really promising, lots of action and excitement, but then it slows down and repetitiveness starts to occur. Lots of scenes where not too much happens fill most of the run-time of this movie. and during the few action scenes this movie has to offer there is little to no music, also some lazy writing with too much coincidences is again a fact. But the performances and the cinematography are amazing. And even though there is slow pacing this movie still can be very entertaining at some parts.
And tells a very decent part of the story with some decent character development.

This isn't a great movie, but it's a good one, yet because its predecessors were so fantastic we see it as a disappointment. People may not like "Deathy Hallows Part One" that much because it has a cliffhanger ending and it doesnt do much in a rather long running span, but give it this; this movie is rarely dull (I only checked the time once; near the end of that long camping trip) and it's quite beautiful at times with some really tender moments. I believe it's best to wait until Part Two comes out in order to properly judge Part One. Remember, many people disliked Kill Bill Vol. 1 when it first came out, until Vol. 2 came in and blew everyone away. Expand

I'm sure they're disappointed they didn't think of this earlier. The film is good, but bloated and poorly edited. There are many unnecessary scenes, such that this movie could have been an hour and still told the story. That being said, it has a great melancholy and brooding atmosphere and is a welcome rebound from the last installment, which was so fixated with high school romantic melodrama that it was quite frankly the worst film of the franchise. It jumps right into action that is sadly not consistent. There is a lot of waiting. But for a fan of the characters and story, one cannot miss this and we are left with an obvious cliffhanger and half a year to see this to the end. Expand

The filmakers were just stalling for the entire film until Voldemort found the object he was desperately trying to find. It was long, the plot had an inconsistent pace, but was otherwise decent. It was hard to appreciate the beginning of the end for the series, and how the movie's "epicness" was overdone and quickly overated. Although, I do expect part 2 to compensate for the overwhelming "epic" tone and a faster paced, more intelligent plotline that the filmakers lacked in this one. When fans who haven't read the book view this, I expect them to focus on the plot and the mysteries that unfold. As far as i'm concerned, this one became a slight dissapointment as they tried to make it feel big with a lack of a dark score, overdevelopment of characters, which made me feel uneasy. I do expect to give a perfect review for part 2 because of the plotline set in place. Harry, Ron, and Hermoine are no longer in Hogwarts. They are on the search for the horcruxes, and time is closing in on them. Expand

My expectations were consistently lowered from movie to movie over the years due to key characters being left (older Weasley brothers, Dobby removed from all but one movie, etc.) and the omission of key moments from the books (Dumbledore's funeral, blah blah blah). But I have to say, they did not do a bad job! Sure, if you want to sit back and nit-pick, you'll have your chance. But most of the liberties taken with the story are in the action department and I would much rather have an action scene embellished rather than a major plot moment glossed over, ignored or changed into a warped version of itself. The movie is well directed, the casting is near-perfect and each member of the cast turns in a solid performance. The pacing is handled incredibly well with scares, laughs and tears sprinkled throughout. If you're a fan of the book and immediately wanted to stab yourself in the throat with a wand after seeing the train wreck that was The Goblet of Fire, don't be so quick to write this one off! If you approach it with an open mind, more often than not you will find yourself pleasantly absorbed in this film instead of sitting on the outside staring at it with scorn. Expand

Part 1 begins with an exciting tone, but continues to disappoint and surprisingly drags to a state beyond any form of dullness in movies. Leaving unexcited, confused, and not knowing what to think. Giving it time for the movie to settle in, it begins to stick. It had by far the best level of acting from the main three so far in the series. As well as the manner in which the reminiscent elements and major plot points were visualized gave it somewhat an unforgettable essence. In combination, the two parts probably deliver the ultimate Potter conclusion harmoniously. But as being a part of a movie doesn't take away the fact this will be treated as a movie by itself. This movie alone, made well, just stalls the flow of the story. It needs some push, some audacity, some passion. With some interesting elements in the story and something unforgettably alluring in its tone and filmmaking, making some powerful moments, this altogether is a molding story that drags to a dud and sucks the utter life and excitement out of this finale. It's shrieking for Del Torro's pizzazz. In spite of, overdue David Yates synthesizes a thoroughly sauteed and seared production, but lacks any density of zest, or moxie, or hurrah. A bitterly soulless Potter film with no magic, yet still a ravishing and stimulating & extraordinary vision. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They did a good job making the movie stand on it's own. I was expecting a really lame and dragged out setup for the second part and a silly cliffhanger ending out of nowhere with "AND NOW WE GO FIGHT VOLDEMORT" before the credits. Luckily, that didn't happen. As always there are omissions from the books and differences altogether, but for what it was, it was a good movie overall. Not the best Potter film (Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire still hold those honors) but I enjoyed it more than all of the other movies in the series aside from the two already mentioned.

I wish they would have shown some of the deaths, particularly Mad Eye Moody. It didn't give the same impact when something happens and they just mention that a person died, it was kind of lame. I did like the extensive torture that Bellatrix does to Hermione though. Even though it didn't happen that way in the book, it was really gruesome sounding and cringeworthy when it first happens.

That's what makes the abrupt ending such a slap in the face. Even die-hard fans will leave wishing the studio had either committed to making a complete, behemoth final film or had picked a different spot to end the film. Depending on your patience for the series, you will either find the movie gorgeously true to the novels and emotionally well-wrought, or a mind numbing snore-fest. People who think the latter probably disliked the book, and there's no shame in that, but people who enjoyed the relative desolation of the first half of the book (because of the psychological and emotional impact it had on our heroes) will be equally transfixed. It almost seems a shame that the first six movies weren't this devoted to detail, until you consider having to go through 14+ films (admittedly, I would probably preferred each film to be as long as necessary, but I am more patient than most).

As a final note, this is easily the least family-friendly film in the series...which should be expected. Keep the little ones at home for this film. There is little they will gain from it, and plenty to lose.

Excellent addition to the Potter franchise and a huge step up from the Half-Blood Prince which lacked so much!

The music is disappointing with Desplat's promise of using John William's themes as they have been so unused in the last three films but he broke it and the actual Harry Potter theme had more or less of a cameo during the traditional sky writing title credits.

The visual effects are at their best since Prisoner of Azkaban, the art direction is fab and the cinematography is good too!

Man, I love Mad Eye. Brendan Gleeson is such a burst of manic energy to this series.

Oh no, he is dead now. Well, at least this one added Bill Nighy as the new Minister of Magic. Nighy always makes films great. Oh my God, how are you going to just kill Nighy like that?

DOBBY. OH MY GOD DOBBY IS BACK. PLEASE DO NOT IRON YOUR HANDS, FRIEND. HELL YES YOU ARE A FREE ELF.

OH MY GOD NO NOT DOBBY TOO. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO KILL DOBBY?!

A truly traumatic watch, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 compounds the trauma of killing of Gary Oldman a few movies back by killing three of the other great parts they had going for it. Beyond writing out Kenneth Branagh's insanely narcissistic teacher, under-utilizing Alan Rickman throughout, and seemingly forgetting they have Emma Thompson as a professor, this entry may be the most egregious in killing off writing out the best characters. The worst part is it does this all while letting Ron's teenage angst and jealousy get so out of control that he storms off and ditches the mission that he fully understood would be difficult half-way through. Why kill of Gleeson, Oldman, Nighy, and Dobby, and under-utilize Rickman, Thompson, Branagh, and even John Hurt, if Ron is still allowed to live? Really missed major opportunities in the name of keeping this kid around.

As the set-up to the final film and, by extension, the final showdown between Harry and Lord Voldemort, Part 1 of the Deathly Hallows packs a considerable amount of menace throughout, in large due to the excellent opening. As Voldemort kills a hostage and then attacks the Order as they move Harry to a safe location, the film starts off on an incredibly thrilling note. With beautiful special effects as they change into all looking like Harry, great mid-air duels, and a gorgeous combination of Voldemort and Harry's wands fending one another off, the opening of this seventh film is perhaps the best yet in the series. Without meandering or bothering to slow down the pace, the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 drops us right back in the wizarding world and dares us to keep up as it weaves its tale. Starting with its foot on the gas and never letting up - aside from the scenes in the woods to some degree - this first entry into the Deathly Hallows novel is menacing, thrilling, and one that has you constantly looking over your shoulder for Voldemort.

Combining this tension with a great central mystery regarding both the horcruxes and the deathly hallows, the film really ramps up the tension nicely. Perhaps the greatest touch is one yet to come in how this introduction of the deathly hallows ties in Harry's invisibility cloak. As the trio of friends traverse the country side in search of these horcruxes, the film really builds up the stakes nicely as they race with Voldemort to find them all and to find all items in the deathly hallows. That said, where the film really trips up is the ending. Showing Voldemort taking the wand from the deathly hallows out of Dumbledore's grave, it really begs the question: who the hell thought the MOST POWERFUL WAND IN THE WIZARDING WORLD would be safe being buried with a dead guy? Did nobody foresee Voldemort just walking on over, exhuming the grave, and then just taking the wand? At this point, Snape playing both sides is hardly the main issue at hand. The issue is the sheer incompetency of the Order of the Phoenix.

While the sequences in the woods can often drag, they provide some great character development and shore up the bond between the central trio very nicely. After Ron is manipulated by a horcrux and storms off, Harry tries to cheer up Hermione by dancing with her. Perhaps a superfluous scene to the plot, the sequence nonetheless really brings a smile to your face and shows the connection between the two. Coming right off the heals of Hermione resting her head on Harry's shoulder as he visits his parent's grave for the first time, the two moments show the emotional connection that goes well beyond the events the two are experiencing at the moment. Powerful and moving to watch, these two moments show the growth of these characters into caring young adults who truly love one another and, above all else, want their friends to be happy and safe. These moments are very nicely acted and brought to life by director David Yates, who gives them just the right amount of emotional charge.

As in all of the films, Yates gives the film some great imagery along the way. One such shot is one of Ron and Hermione skipping stones in the background with Harry in the foreground. Beautifully framed and a tranquil moment amid the chaos of the impending war, the shot highlights the sheer beauty this series has been able to create at times. The aforementioned combination of Voldemort and Harry's wand beams coming together always serves as a beautiful shot earlier in the film. One of the highlights of the visuals, however, comes when Harry finds the sword of Gryffindor.
