Roger Ebert you are a fool! This film is one of the greatest comedies of all time! I don't think I go a day without saying "Shooter!". In my opinion Happy Gilmore is one of the best comedies of all time as almost every joke in this film is pure quotable gold, I also love Ben Stiller's role in this film as the senior citizens home caretaker he is just so brutal hahahaha

I enjoyed happy Gilmore, I guess you can say a movie when Adam sandler was in this prime.. The story of a wanna be hockey player that ends up taking up golf because of his ability to drive the ball. Some critics doesn't like Adam Sandler these days, but forget them. "Happy Gilmore" was one of the best comedies of the 1990s. I love the film with a hilarious funnybone. Gilmore was trying to score a hole in one, but a fisherman of some sort distracted Gilmore and called him a "Jackass!" and that's why Happy wasn't happy at all. He cost him and Barker the game and when it's all said then done, Gilmore and Barker started to get physical and fighting their heads off as they brawled all the way to the end of the pond. And then Happy said "The price is wrong, **** I couldn't handle myself watching a classic Adam Sandler movie from Billy Madison to Big Daddy. I got it on DVD and it's a must-buy movie.… Expand

A genuinely funny and enjoyable film. Has a great story filled with some laughs, as well as some drama. The characters are interesting and rootable, the villain is dastardly, etc. All in all, Happy Gilmore is truly a hole in one!

I have noticed some people on here dismissing critics in general because this has such a low metascore. However if you go to Rotten Tomatoes this movie is all but fresh with a score of 59. I hadn't seen this 'til now and I found it surprisingly good. Happy Gilmore is one of his better movies, though I would personally put The Wedding Singer and Spanglish over this. Happy Gilmore is one of his better movies, though I would personally put The Wedding Singer and Spanglish over this. But it is better than Little Nicky and the Mr Deeds remake, that I can tell you. The story is predictable and holds no surprises, the script is somewhat uneven and the ending struck a false note with me. However, while it is of no cinematic value, the cinematography and scenery are above decent, and the slapstick action and sports sequences do have its amusing moments and when I say amusing it was actually amusing. Adam Sandler is delightfully goofy and a lot less irritating than I usually find him and Julie Bowen is a nice romantic interest. Overall, not exceptional being a bit of a no-brainer, but it is an amusing knockabout sports comedy. 7/10 Bethany Cox… Expand

There isn no denying that the steam roller success story that is the career of Adam Sandler has had an impact on the comedy genre for the past 20 years. Whether loved or loathed, this guy has made a fortune attempting to make people laugh,There isn no denying that the steam roller success story that is the career of Adam Sandler has had an impact on the comedy genre for the past 20 years. Whether loved or loathed, this guy has made a fortune attempting to make people laugh, Happy Gilmore, while juvenile, crude, promoting violence for laughs and being utterly brainless, is quite a hysterical and side-splitting story, for all its faults, one can't help but appreciate some of the hilarious scenes throughout the film.
Sandler stars as the titular character, a short-tempered and hockey player whose reckless behaviour lands him in many sticky spots, most notably not getting picked for his team for the next season. His stubbornness to play a game he isn't very good at, apart from a killer snapshot, puts him in the crosshair of a guy called Chubbs, who witnesses Happy and shot and sees a gleaming opportunity to stick him on a golf course, Happy sees the materialistic side of things after his grandmother has failed to pay her taxes and is placed in a nursing home, I suppose thats where the heart of the movie stems from.
This sets up what can only be described as ridiculous but also memorable scenes in comedy history. Happy of course receives a cold reception but immediately makes an impression, not to the amusement of the board. He curses, dresses casually and chats up girls cheering him on, and he also punches Bob Barker. With the shallow film though, there obviously comes the predictable nature of how things are going to play out, making for some rather senseless plot points and even characters. Happy himself is also quite a character who is difficult to relate to, his actions are often questionable and I can't help wonder, 'what was the point?" There is also a heavy basis of product placement, which sort of comes with Sandler territory nowadays, but when an actual ad, passed over as part of the film, actually appears in the running time, its enraging to say the least.
With all the flaws, Happy Gilmore certainly won't stick out to reasonable movie lovers, but it should maybe be known as a guilty pleasure for its hilarity in many moments, quite a talented cast including Ben Stiller running an OAP sweatshop and an array of famous faces does make quite a funny and long lasting film.… Expand

Sandler was popular on SNL. He went into the movie business, but was not well received.

I like Sandler's movies. I think his characters are interesting and fun to watch. But Sandler in this movie is still young. Maybe he is immature. InsteadSandler was popular on SNL. He went into the movie business, but was not well received.

I like Sandler's movies. I think his characters are interesting and fun to watch. But Sandler in this movie is still young. Maybe he is immature. Instead of a fun performance, he is angry and fussy. This is not good.

The script is also stupid. There are a number of things that shouldn't be in a movie. But we can see them not as flaws, but as good points. Sometimes stupidity is necessary. Who came up with the idea of Carl Weathers being injured by an alligator, or a person being injured by a falling air conditioner?
After all, we all like Sandler's comedy, no matter how stupid it is. I'm not so sure about Sandler's performance in this film, though.… Expand

This is a very stupid movie but it is also very funny. The little bits and one liners are usually right on. This movie is definitley worth seeing.

This is Adam Sandler's best movie of all time. I have no idea why the critics are such hardasses when it comes to good Adam Sandler movies. Happy Gilmore is an awesome golf comedy and has almost non-stop hilarity.

One of the many films where 'real' critics are off their freakin gourd! Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore is simply hilarious... he just doesn't stop for a second. This is easily Sandler's best movie. There are a lot of memorable characters, but my favorite is probably Ben Stiller's Hal. I recently read an article on Hal and I forgot how funny he was. I'd really like to see him get his own spin-off.
