This is a great movie by any measure. It's an entertainment on the surface, with startling stunts, huge sets, technical dance numbers, entertaining "bits", great music both as background and foreground, beautiful places and cinematographyThis is a great movie by any measure. Attempting to disassemble any part of this juggling act in the act of judging the Movie is to miss the whole point of the movie. It is designed to work as a "meta" meta. Whether or not you agree with the espoused mature outlook and body politic hidden within the clever script and whether or not you choose to pull outward and see how actually genius the entire presentation is as a whole, you can't help but be entertained by this product of Hollywood about Hollywood using the "language" of Hollywood. Like I said, pure genius and I left with a smile on my face.… Expand

Need more time to digest this, but it's genius. A meta movie that plays like a series of movies-within-movies, whilst never getting so caught up in itself that you forget that you're watching a single film unto itself. That's the structural/stylistic approach of Hail, Caesar!, but I need to sleep on it before I can attempt to verbally lay out its thematic density.… Expand

This is possibly the most self-indulgent work by any writer/directors that I have ever seen, but it somehow works out into a movie that I love.

It's essentially a bittersweet love letter from the Coens to Old Hollywood, the gist of whichThis is possibly the most self-indulgent work by any writer/directors that I have ever seen, but it somehow works out into a movie that I love.

It's essentially a bittersweet love letter from the Coens to Old Hollywood, the gist of which is "I'm sorry we batter each other sometimes, but you're worth it." It's told in a zany, 24+ hour workday of a fictionalized Eddie Mannix, Old Hollywood executive and producer.

I think many users' complaints that the stories seem disjointed and the characters seem underdeveloped come from not giving Mannix the proper level of consideration. The scenes inspired by Old Hollywood aren't just thrown in because the Coen's felt like it (though that is one big reason for sure), those scenes are also what make the business worth it to Mannix. The other characters are certainly interesting, but they're there to help us decide if Mannix should stay at Capitol Pictures or leave for a more mainstream career. They aren't separate, unexplored storylines. There is only one storyline: "Should Mannix go to Lockheed or not?"

I'm a big fan of the movies from the 30s and 40s which the real Mannix worked on, so I think the Coens and I agree that it is worth it, even if we are "just" making aquamusicals and superhero movies.

If none of that's for you, I think the movie can also get by just based on slapstick comedy alone.… Expand

This is the Coen Brother's in high art film mode although perhaps more subtly than their previous efforts. Hail, Caesar! is a film more concerned with examining structures of belief that people dedicate themselves to (communism, capitalism, religion and cinema/art specifically) and their relative merit or lack thereof than telling a tight, fast-paced story. It's also affords the brothers Coen a chance to play around in the classic Hollywood sandbox to varying degrees of success (the parlour drama 'Merrily We Dance' is the only movie-within-the-movie that completely captures the aesthetic of the time although the rest are still fun). Consequently, the central story, such as it is, is not as strong as in some of their films like True Grit, Fargo or No Country for Old Men, but that is by design - it's a just a framework for what they're really interested in and the more languid pace actually gives it something of that 1950's old Hollywood vibe.

Slight side note, the ad campaign for this movie did it no favours. It was sold as a movie more in the vein of The Big Lebowski or Raising Arizona - still very Coen brothers, but more in the screwball comedy vein which it really isn't. I'm willing to bet that the critical consensus on this film will rise given time as people recalibrate their expectations as to what the film is trying to do.… Expand

Josh Brolin's character has to deal with the mysterious disappearance of Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), AND at the same time he deals with all the actors, editing, stages, and angry directors. Although if you wanted to se a specific actor such as Scarlett Johansson or especially Jonah Hill and Ralph Fiennes. you are unfortunately out of luck.If you want to see a real picture, see this movie. But if your into action and adventure, some of this may come to your liking, but don't over pay for tickets… Expand

Brothers Coen reproduce with ingenuity the tinsel of the golden age of cinema in the 50s; all this and the double moral and hypocresy of the producers and society. The fat cats of the cast makes a remarkable job, even Roger Deakins behind the camera.

I loved Hail, Caesar. An absolutely hilarious homage and piece of social commentary (politics, Hollywood, human nature, etc.), Hail, Caesar is a really a movie about movies made for people who love movies and their history. An absolutely hilarious homage and piece of social commentary (politics, Hollywood, human nature, etc.), Hail, Caesar is a really a movie about movies made for people who love movies and their history. Touching on all the key movements of the 1950s from the classic films to the politics therein, the film really skewers the time period and entertains along the way. Lavishly crafted with fantastic production and costume design, the film both looks and sounds the part. Channing Tatum honestly stole the show for me comedically, as all of his parts were hysterical. George Clooney, Josh Brolin, and Alden Ehrenhich, were the real stars here and knocked it out of the park. Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, and Frances McDormand, were also very good in smaller roles. Overall, Hail, Caesar is an absolute riot if you love film and film history. It appears many moviegoers thought it would be more of a serious kidnapping type movie, but if you know anything about the Coen Brothers, you know there is always more than meets the eye in their films and their classic kidnapping trademark. This is very much the case in their latest work. Overall, the film was phenomenal and really sets the standard for forthcoming releases this year.… Expand

I went to this film with my sister who has an encyclopedic knowledge of Hollywood lore. She loved this film and I give it an 8 in her honor. She said to me later, “I guess you don’t know what Dashiell Hammett looked like” (all the actorsI went to this film with my sister who has an encyclopedic knowledge of Hollywood lore. She said to me later, “I guess you don’t know what Dashiell Hammett looked like” (all the actors playing the kidnappers were chosen to look like famous “studio”-connected people of the era). She also reminded me that Loretta Young adopted her own child (fathered by Clark Gable), just like an actress in the film almost does, and told me about the rumors that Eddie Mannix (who really existed) supposedly had George Reeves (Superman) murdered because of his affair with Mannix’s promiscuous wife, most of whose affairs he tolerated. So I can see why many critics had high praise for this film. I thought the film was fun, but I yawned a lot at times, luckily not as loudly as a man behind us. But if you know all the old stories, you’ll love this film.… Expand

Hail, Caesar! as a film feels very much like an attempt by the Coen Brothers to make an old-fashioned Hollywood film, in a day and age where it is not accepted. For those who love the films of 1950’s Hollywood, and the general history ofHail, Caesar! as a film feels very much like an attempt by the Coen Brothers to make an old-fashioned Hollywood film, in a day and age where it is not accepted. For those who love the films of 1950’s Hollywood, and the general history of Hollywood this film is a great way to spend time. Hail, Caesar! is funny, well shot, but lacks the memorable stature of the previous Coen Brothers films. For those who love Coen Brother’s films this is not there best, but is still enjoyable.

Not that it is all that surprising but this film has quite a few moments that are truly laugh-out-loud funny, but the humor is more subtle. It should be noted that the film is not as funny as The Big Lebowski, so those hoping for another Coen Brothers comedy classic it may not be that funny. Another small problem with the humor is that while the film is funny, many of the funnier jokes are in the trailer, and naturally the film lacks surprises.

Another trademark of the Coen Brothers is there beautiful cinematography, thanks to cinematographer Roger Deakins. It seems ironic watching it because the film is set in 50’s Hollywood and the film reels they watch look like some of the cleanest film of today. The overall look of the film is mesmerizing, and may be honored a year from now for it’s cinematography. However, in many aspects the film falls short of the expectations that the Coen Brothers deserve today.

While the film is a good and solid entry it has a few too many weaknesses. The villains of the film are a little weak, and because of the crowded story are never really fleshed out in a realistic way. On top of that the story is a little weak, often taking detours that aren’t necessary, and often feeling as though what we’re seeing isn’t all that important. The film also seems to gloss over the consequences of characters actions, and tries to just be funny, but not over the top just subtly funny, which doesn’t quite jive.
In the end Hail, Caesar is a comedy for the thinking man who doesn’t like the modern comedies that are often dumb and overbearing. Hail, Caesar is a film that looks back at 50’s Hollywood lovingly, and for that reason is a great film for film buffs, especially those that love classic Hollywood. However, if you’re expecting a great comedy that is both subtle, and brilliant like The Big Lebowski, this isn’t quite that.… Expand

Może dlatego, że dzisiejsze filmy przyzwyczaiły nas do prostych historii z kompletnie nie złożonymi bohaterami. Śmieszą mnie te wszystkie recenzje gdzie pisze się o braku logiki albo że nic nie jest jasne. To smutne jak bardzo ludzie odzwyczaili się od prawdziwego Kina.… Expand

But all complaints aside, I enjoyed it very much. The scenes on the various set pieces of the various films were easily the best. George Clooney was in top form, and the rest of the cast were great too. Josh Brolin played his character well, with Scarlett Johansson, Alden Ehrenreich and Ralph Fiennes to name a few turning in highly impressive supporting performances. The production design was amazing. They deserve an Oscar for that. FINAL VERDICT: Hail, Caesar may prove frustrating to some (and you probably need to be a movie-buff to fully appreciate it) but it's a solid Coen Brothers flick and an affectionate, humorous tribute to Hollywood's golden age that should satisfy fans of old cinema. 7.5/10.… Expand

Let me start by saying that not everyone will love "Hail, Caesar" - in fact I would imagine the split will be pretty 50-50 between really adoring it and full blown hating it. This is something that I think the CoenFIVE SENTENCE REVIEW:

Let me start by saying that not everyone will love "Hail, Caesar" - in fact I would imagine the split will be pretty 50-50 between really adoring it and full blown hating it. This is something that I think the Coen Brothers do well, though; a lot of my friends and family can't really stand them and unless you are in the mindset of watching one of their movies it can be a real chore to get through. So now that the warning is out of the way, I'll say that I really enjoyed this movie, with a cast that seems to be having fun, a love letter to the "golden age" of Hollywood, and a movie that pokes holes into what that era - which provided many classics - really meant for those who worked in it. Josh Brolin shines as the lead in this film and becomes the boss and manager of the crazy cast of people on the film set for the imaginary company he runs, and he brisks through the movie at a break neck pace that could come off as lazy writing but is done so well that it helps define the character. Most roles here outside of Brolin and perhaps Clooney really come off more as cameos, but they are done well and weave together rather effortlessly, making it an enjoyable and short watch.

FULL LENGTH REVIEW:

As I sat in the theater waiting for this movie to begin, I got myself ready. There are a few directors I have to do this with. Wes Anderson, Charlie Kaufman, and the Coens instantly come to mind. I knew I was about to see something with characters who are so well defined yet seem to ridiculous and over the top that they could not possibly exist in the real world. And despite this, they feel so fleshed out and real that they must exist in more than just the mind of the writer. But preparing myself for this and being met with it become two different things, as I don't think anyone can ever really be completely ready for a Coen Brothers film.

"Hail, Caesar," named after the epic being filmed at the studio where the film takes place, is really a satirical love letter to the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, where film studios were run like factories and movie after movie were churned out on the assembly line and put on the silver screen. Hollywood felt like a world completely removed from reality, although that probably still is true to a certain degree. At the center of this studio kingdom is Eddie Mannix, played wonderfully by Josh Brolin. Brolin brings a bravado and calm handle to the film that it really needs, as the rest of it seems to be filled with overly eccentric and out of control directors and actors.

Mannix is thrown for a loop, however, when the lead of his big epic being filmed (played in an effective if not a little too airheaded manner by George Clooney) is kidnapped. Mannix, while dealing with all the other problems being presented around his studio, must quietly resolve this or risk losing total control of his studio. The story, which features a lot of moving parts and a cast made up almost entirely of cameos (Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johannson, and Channing Tatum are in the movie for the briefest of moments - although they are done well), seems like it is complicated but in reality is quite simple. Mannix is simply a studio head/fixer, who is trying to keep his machine running as smoothly as possible.

Under this story is a deep love letter to classic Hollywood, complete with the film archetypes of the era. Musicals, dance movies, epic movies, Westerns, and Broadway adaptations all get screen time as the movie moves through the studio. Stars have exclusive deals that keep them tied to the whims of the studio, and all troubles are swept under the rug to keep their stars looking innocent and pristine. It is in this vein, however, that it also plays out as a sort of satire. Writers are shown to be mainly Communists, the studio heads abuse their stars and control everyone, and the winning religion - which plays well hand in hand with the fictitious "Hail, Caesar" being filmed in the movie - is the film studio. It becomes a little heavy handed at times, and the writing can be a little too dense in some areas, although that is something that goes through many recent Coen Brothers comedies.

The movie, despite some shortcomings and potentially wasted talents, is very effective. The real scene stealer here may be relative newcomer Alden Ehrenreich, who plays a young Western star forced into more serious roles despite being a less than proficient actor. His naive attitude and dedication to the studio and director really shines, and played to near perfection by the young actor. All in all, this movie is fun, lighthearted, humorous, and a well done satirical love letter to classic Hollywood. If you like the Coen Brothers, you will like this movie. If you liked "The Artist," you will like this movie, despite some shortcomings.

While far from being one the Coen brother's best films, there's something about this movie that keeps me coming back to it.

It may have something to do with the supremely high standards set by the Coen Brothers' stellar filmography, but there is certainly something missing from "Hail, Caesar!" Perhaps, it's the narrative at hand, which seems to clearly lack a sense of cohesion amongst its bizarre moving parts. Maybe it has something to do with the undercooked feel of the film's final act, or the heavy handed antics of the movie's philosophical platform. Still though, as disappointing as these elements may be, make no mistake - "Hail, Caesar!" is a surprisingly enjoyable comedy, with delightfully entertaining performances from Josh Brolin, George Clooney, and newcomer Alden Ehrenreich. The bitingly outlandish humor is also a shining element of this tribute to cinema's golden age. Sure, the Coen Brothers might not be at the top of their narrative game, but that comedic right hook is still a knockout.… Expand

The Coen brothers films are not made for the masses. And why should they? I personally am not the biggest fan of all. But I appreciate talent, style and good scripts. Hail Caesar! Has gotten quite a bit of hate that I don’t believe it deserves, but I will admit it is one of the Coen Brothers weaker films.
The film is a throwback to the ‘golden age’ of cinema, and the film deals with the perception ofHail Caesar! Has gotten quite a bit of hate that I don’t believe it deserves, but I will admit it is one of the Coen Brothers weaker films.
The film is a throwback to the ‘golden age’ of cinema, and the film deals with the perception of their actors in which most people were told what to do not only with their careers but with their lifestyle. Josh Brolin’s character (Eddie Mannix) is the man who tries to hold it all together and wants to keep everything on a tight timescale (evident by the frequent use of his watch and time throughout the film). The film is also just a chance for the Coen Brothers to have fun and show off their film knowledge in the industry; and you can see how much fun each actor is having.
George Clooney is to be quite honest really just a McGuffin for the film, but he is still great in his role, Josh Brolin is pretty enjoyable too, and Ralph Fiennes is hilarious and brilliant as he is in almost everything but the actor that really steals the show is Alden Ehrenreich as Hobie Doyle. His character is loveable, hilariously unaware be a very caring and polite man. He may not be the best actor but he tries his best at adapting from his typical western films of little dialogue to a period drama and really wants to do well but he just can’t. Seriously, if there is any reason to go see this film it is for the scene between Alden and Ralph. It is a hysterical scene.
The film has a bundle of jokes but I feel many viewers may not fully get all of them as a lot of them are orientated around the jargon of the film industry. The film also references a lot of film industry trivia; for instance the film columnists who are based on real people and the scene in which Frances McDormund almost chokes herself to death on a film reel which references an actual person who died whilst their scarf got caught up in a film reel.
The films plot is debateable on how legitimate it actually is and does become a little too confusing getting towards the end but the script does allow for some hilariously entertaining scenes. Every actor is on point here but the best in the film are absolutely Alden and Ralph. If you are a big film industry buff you have to check this out but its downfall is definitely in how limited an audience can enjoy this. I enjoyed the film but I must admit it isn’t as consistent as other Coen Brother films and is quite inaccessible but there is definitely some people who will love this film and is probably going to gather a larger cult following later on in its life.

why is this film getting bad reviews? i actually liked it! but keep in mind, this is josh brolins movie, not george clooneys. its a bit clunky and unever, takes a while to get going. but i was sucked in.

This might divide people significantly but if you want to see a throwback to the Golden Age of cinema, fantastic acting, beautiful shots and set pieces, and Channing-Potato-Face-Tatum singing and dancing in a sailor suit (I could have happily lived the rest of my life without that last one but it's too late now). I personally enjoyed this, but it's no Fargo. Let me put it this way, if you're the type of person who hasn't heard of the Coen Brothers then you might want to give this a miss, but for everyone else it’s a definite recommendation.… Expand

There is also one subplot (out of a few) that seemed a bit pointless and didn't really add much to the main storyline.

The film has a lot of silly and funnily penned characters though and good performances by all the actors. It's a shame that the storyline and writing didn't do these characters and the overall film much justice.… Expand

I went into Hail, Caesar! expecting that the numerous reviews and word-of-mouth grumblings I have had about the movie would be true: "It's the worst Coen Brothers movie" or "its actually bad" or "its a waste of time." I was pleasantlyI went into Hail, Caesar! expecting that the numerous reviews and word-of-mouth grumblings I have had about the movie would be true: "It's the worst Coen Brothers movie" or "its actually bad" or "its a waste of time." I was pleasantly surprised when the movie turned out to be actually entertaining and meticulously crafted.

To its core, Hail, Caesar! is an anti-action movie. There is a lot of build up and tension that leads to ultimately no payoff. You're just along for the ride, and I ended up really enjoying the lack of a climax. There are a plethora of characters and interweaving plot threads, and the ensemble cast has no main character. The closest we come to a protagonist is Josh Brolin's character, who tries to navigate the quagmire that is the internal workings of a Golden Age Hollywood film studio and keep everything afloat. Every performance is really solid, and everyone gets their moment in the limelight.

Hail, Caesar is a strange, but authentic take on the movie business. Despite the occasional seediness and artistic conflicts, everyone loves the movies. In a way, Hail, Caesar is a very meta take on the film industry.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I quite enjoyed this film - I watched it knowing its a Coen brothers film, having seen 'O Brother, Where Art Thou' and 'Burn After Reading', so I knew roughly what to expect.

This film isn't full of major laugh out loud moments but there are a good number of quite amusing scenes never the less - its perhaps a little too gentle and not as 'in your face' as some people may like their favourite comedy films to be but I certainly found it enjoyable. There is some great cinematography and there is some slapstick humour, with a number of scenes filmed featuring some impressive choreography. As a parody of 1950s Hollywood, particularly of a sort of forced overly happyness aspect of musical films at the time, it does quite well. I liked what happened to George Clooney's character (Baird Whitlock) and the sort of themes or moral messages that come from that. I also enjoyed the rousing music to match the melodrama of the film being, well, filmed during the film itself.

I thought this was an easy film to watch, an amusing and mostly quite entertaining one, although the plot pace won't suit all but I'd recommend it to fans of the Coen brothers work.… Expand

Given this stellar list of talented actors, writers and directors, I eagerly anticipated viewing this attempted satire of 1950’s Hollywood but, unfortunately, I was greatly disappointed for the advertised brand was significantly better than the product. With so much material available, the Coens missed almost every opportunity to make the film work and could have elicited genuine laughter instead of only a slight smile or grin from an audience anxiously wanting and hoping for more. It should also be noted that Mr. Clooney and Ms. Johansson, two charismatic and generally enjoyable actors to watch, should not attempt slapstick comedy for the result is more tragic than humorous. Also, the film with many subplots never properly allows any of them to develop and what could have been a clever spoof of making films in the mid 20th Century becomes a poor but unsuccessful attempt to be funny. Knowing what could have been achieved but wasn’t is even more frustrating. Difficult to understand, too, is that so many reputable critics have applauded this film apparently judging the proverbial "book" by its cover rather than its contents. I give the film a6.0 rating 2 stars suggesting that the Coens owed the viewers and their own tremendous talents more than they were able to achieve in their latest theatrical endeavor.… Expand

We also get treated to some delightful re-creations of classic styles (a Biblical epic, a Western, a Kelly-esque dance romp, an Esther Williams production number). The star-loaded cast (Clooney, Tatum, Johansson) gets to create some delightful types (Alden Ehrenreich is especially enjoyable as a sincere, simple cowboy). So far, sounds like lots of fun. Where it stumbles is tying it all together. The individual encounters are lively and peppered with the Coen’s cracked sense of humor. But the whole narrative doesn’t seam together smoothly and there’s more energy than laffs. A lesser film by the Brothers is still fun.… Expand

"Hail, Caesar!" is a goldmine for film buffs and anyone familiar with the 'old' Hollywood, a time when studios ruled and took care of their stars and kept them out of jail. It was a time when a baby born out of wedlock would be adopted by her"Hail, Caesar!" is a goldmine for film buffs and anyone familiar with the 'old' Hollywood, a time when studios ruled and took care of their stars and kept them out of jail. It was a time when a baby born out of wedlock would be adopted by her movie star real mother. Was the story true about a director being fired because the actor had tricked with him before becoming a big time 'masculine' star? Who is the singing cowboy, (played by Alden Ehrenreich), the studio wants to turn into a drawing room star based on?

The best segment is a 'homage' to Gene Kelly, and films like "One The Town" and "Anchors Away", with Channing Tatum dancing up athletic tapping and acrobatic, flawless movements with homoerotic overtones to a song entitled "No Dames". The funniest segment is a scene with Frances McDormand editing this segment.

The story line of, possibly, the blacklisted 'Communist" writers kidnapping the star of the movie "Hail, Caesar!" ("Ben Hur" anyone?) played by George Clooney (Charleton Heston?) doiesn't really go anywhere but he seems to be having fun playing it for goofiness.

There are a few scenes that just don't work like Eddie Mannix, the 'fixer', played by Josh Brolin in a somber, fedora clad, going to confession and confessing he smoked 2 to 3 cigarettes and slapping a contract player. There is also a scene that falls flat where Mannix is trying to get approval for the film from 4 religious readers. None of this is Brolin's fault but of the screenwriting.

Scarlott Johansson as DeeAnna Moran, really Esther Williams at least in the roles she played, replicates the swimming routine choreographed by Busby Berkeley in the original "Million Dollar Mermaid" and though not given enough to do looks great doing in it.

Veronica Osorio (Carmen Miranda?) shines in a small role while Ralph Fiennes (Vincent Minelli?) and Tilda Swinton (Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper?) are given little to do but do what they can with what they are given.

Directed and written by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen the movie is not up to par in either position. Though offering a few laughs "Hail, Caesar!" is more enjoyed for the guessing game that holds interest for those who know movies and/or remember the scandals of yesterday.… Expand

So here's the new film from the Coen brothers. They have become rare in the recent years, I was always checking out what's next for them and now I'm slightly disappointed with this. I enjoyed watching it, it is one of those you want to rate them better, but you can't for some unidentified reasons. According to my analysis why I was not satisfied fully is the story. I mean the narration was rich, performances were phenomenal and music, locations, all were fantastic, but the screenplay was kind of aimless. The beginning, the ending or even in the mid part it had no purpose, but something like a mockumentary about the film industry of the 1950s.

With the average screenplay, the directors have shown their magic. Very cool presentation, you would enjoy it if you're theirs films fan. But I don't think all his fans would be pleased enough. This is truly a multi-starrer film, everybody was at their best in their retro characters. If you share your experience with others who also saw it, they might ask who do you liked the most. Probably many would favour Josh Brolin, because he had more priority than others who comes under his belt. But George Clooney and Alden Ehrenreich also have given a good show followed by Scarlett Johansso and Tilda Swinton. The remaining ones as well not bad, but Jonah Hill was completely a waste.

Since it is about the film industry and its people, brace yourself for some good laughs. There is variety in it like different genre/theme and multiple layers in the narration. Like from moving to the western to the historical subject and then to the musical and many more. It did good at the box office against its budget, only because of the star power it has and the filmmaker's reputation came in handy. Though I hope the Coen brothers would come back strong with another product and it does not take another 3 years. It is not an award winning film, just a good entertainer, but praisable quality.

Despite promises from critics that film buffs such as myself and those familiar with Hollywood's golden age would enjoy this film, I really thought that it could've turned out a lot better. Granted, there are some worthwhile performances from the A-list all-star cast, but even they weren't enough to make the film any better. And while the film was certainly meant to be a comedy and I did let out a chuckle or two, I found most of it to be very bland and straightforward. Overall, this is just another sign to me that the Coen Bros. are more or less losing their touch.… Expand

The performances are all good even though most of the cast don’t get much to do and honestly it feels too short and it feels like it could have easily gone on longer. The film does have an excellent production design and is a perfect tribute to 1950’s cinema but I felt it could have given us more. The Coen brothers can make movies that have less structure and more just exist to be movies like The Big Lebowski, but I kind of preferred their more structured works like No Country For Old Men and True Grit where they are being kept on a leash because of their source material, when they are left on their own like they are with this movie, I think they can often go a bit too far, however on this occasion, I don’t think they go far enough and it reeks of them trying to bite off more than they could chew.

It’s not totally bad, this will be a very interesting film to watch on NetFlix on a movie night with your friends and you won’t come out hating it, a couple of moments really made me laugh. The film can be very entertaining at times which is a credit, it just doesn’t measure up to a perfect whole. Wait for it to come out on DVD and get it on a rental.… Expand

When the Baltic black communist submarine came up out of the ocean to pick up Channing Tatum i soon began to realize that i may have had a stroke. The story itself was just weak, even when you make sense of it. A stronger writing board, with the same directorial set would have made this movie a hell of a lot more enjoyable than it was.… Expand

If you're a big fan of Coen brothers then I'll bet you enjoy this one too, but for me, even though I like most of their movies, this lacked something, I don't know, I think the story was a bit too boring. Great production numbers and cinematography, but the plot is very thin. Clooney is wasted, so is Johansson. Then again, so was Tatum. Funny, quirky and a little boring. There is a definitive lack of substance to the various sub-plots too, but taken purely as a comedy it is entertaining enough. Brilliant acting from Brolin & Clooney.

Coen brothers is of course no short on execution but the script is the real culprit in here that never had enough crisp to make it in the first place. The feature endorses itself on performance level and star power that matches both the things perfectly delivered thoroughly by Josh Brolin and George Clooney and other cameos. The problem is that the two main threads of the story are just not worthy of the incidental pleasures that the rest of the movie affords. The characters of Eddie Mannix and Baird Whitlock, played by Josh Brolin and George Clooney as a troubled studio head and kidnapped star respectively, are just not given the material to make their characters anything but dull, despite their perfectly respectable efforts. The film is basically too loosely written to gel properly into a satisfactory whole and it is definitely not as funny as it should be. Inspired moments peppered throughout enable a game supporting cast to try and salvage a film that is resolutely skewered to following the boring story arcs of Brolin and Clooney. Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes all register strongly, but it is Channing Tatum and Alden Ehrenreich who steal the show. Tatum is dazzlingly fabulous in his big song and dance number demonstrating a talent I don’t think anyone could have imagined. And as Hobie Doyle, the dumb star of countless westerns making his transition to drama, Ehrenrich presents us with the most enjoyable and fully rounded character in the film. More of him and less of Brolin and Clooney would have been advantageous and most welcome. The film’s biggest laugh out loud moment, though, is reserved for Frances McDormand’s editor, C C Calhoun, whose one scene unwittingly, but deliciously, brings to mind Isadora Duncan. The film is finely crafted in all areas but especially in costume and production design. Their contributions add to the scenes recreating the movie making process which are undoubtedly the highlights of an otherwise very uneven film.… Expand

What little story exists is broken up by short vignettes of old timey hollywood movies that all end with the gritty real world of filming a hollywood movie. If you pined for a good old western, water movie, romance, homo-erotic musical, or sword and sandal flick, then "Hail, Ceaser!" has everything you love.… Expand

Even the main leads don't leave much of an impression on you and nobody's story is really fleshed out.

That's my biggest problem is just how short this movie feels. It's like a 2+ hour film that got cut to just the basics of the story. It all feels rushed and hasty.

But Hail, Caesar is not all bad. It's an entertaining film with great humour and many laugh out loud scenes. It has a story with some interesting metaphors about religion. An okay film, in short. But since it's the Coen brothers you naturally expect something more. At least something that isn't a confusing mess.

I would only recommend this film to people who are already fans of the Coen brothers style. If you are one of them this film might of be of interest to you, but I'm not sure what it would do to anyone else. Overall it is a mediocre film.… Expand

It is a peculiar tale of a Hollywood producer trying to get the ransom money to get back his lead star (played by George Clooney).The film also follows several subplots involving a southern actor trying to broaden his acting range and another with an actress (Played by Scarlett Johansson) trying to get a divorce and adopt her own daughter. The Coen Brothers are known for their witty dialouge and distinct sense of humor that is often used to illustrate a point. The main point in this film however feels lost as the message is confused. The plot with Clooney being kidnapped by communists give the idea that the actors and writers are exploited by the studios. However the message feels lost when the main protagonist scolds Clooney for his communist ideals. It feels unsure if it is a critique of Capitalism or a critique of the Hollywood blacklisting during the height of the cold war. There are also a few plot points that seen to come and go. For example, the lead Communist played by Channing Tatum turns in the studio for his own agenda but his character arc doesn't move forward after he accidentally drops the ransom money. Another subplot involving one of Eddie's friends talking about the bombs at Bikini Atoll doesn't really go anywhere. Despite the films setbacks, there are a few exceptional things about the film. For example, the cinematography gives the illusion of intimacy in the studio which makes it feel as if the studio is a character in of itself. The shots involved with the Russian submarine really show how massive the vehicle is and the use of high angle shots to effectively show the superiority of the machine over the men in the row boat. There are also some humorous moments such as the slapstick routine in the editing room and the exchange between Ralph Fiennes and Alden Ehrenreich. It is a film that is confused in its message with a few amusing moments. I could only recommend this film to those who are die-hard fans of the Coen brothers while the rest of the audience trying to get into their work are better off watching their other films such as The Big Lebowski or No Country For Old Men.… Expand

It also holds my record for most people to walk out on a film accumulating half the cinema getting up to refund their tickets, which surprisingly became more entertaining than the movie itself.

Now if you are planning to watch this movie please help yourself, to these few things to better your experience. 1st. hit yourself with an adrenaline shot before the film, so you don't have ushers trying to wake you 5 hours after the movie has ended 2nd. Sticky tape your eyebrows to your forehead, because with the brief screen time some actors have, you will have missed them in the time it take to blink and 3rd and finally don't go in with any expectations at all or you will be guaranteed to be disapointed

Now where credits is due is to Brolin and Ehrenreich who make the most of the films pretentious script whereas every other actor and actress who shares a piece of the small spotlight seemed to have had a care factor of zero, when reading the weak and intolerable screenplay. Written with the same amount of care and consideration involved in trying to to miss the toilet seat while peeing.

Hail Caesar, isn't funny it isn't intelligent and most of the struggle behind the movie is trying to figure out exactly what it was supposed to be.… Expand

Add to that the fact that no characters are explored fully enough to love them, hate them or really careabout then, and you've got a movie in which the audience simply doesn't have any reason to watch other than having paid to be there.… Expand

However, slow paced, only sporadically funny and boring, a caper about postwar Hollywood with some magnificently realised pastiche sets. The Brothers ominous deadpan and quirky quality is present, nonetheless.
Scarlett Johansson grumpy Esther Williams-style diva is fine, but Alden Ehrenreich cowboy, Channing Tatum dancer, Frances McDormand hilarious bit and Tilda Swinton resplendent Hedda and Louella steal the scene. A recurring central-cameo of George Clooney in a Quo Vadis and Ben-Hur pantomime is disrespectful, unfunny and none-too-bright. Now I get that this is a satirical, humorous take and tribute to the Hollywood of yesteryear. To the movie's credit, this captures the time period / culture well and the acting is decently good. But there is nothing compelling or very interesting to attract the attention of the audience. Since there are at least 4 different plots; this means that each story is short and predicable. Do to the large amount of characters, most of them are stereotypes and not worth caring for. There is also no tension or suspense ; making the stories somewhat boring as well. Overall, this film is overstuffed with plots, rather boring, and some elements are way over the top. The only good things are that the feel of the era is well captured and and some individual scenes are quite funny. In the end; unless you're a fan of classic Hollywood; this film isn't worth watching. The 2015 film "Trumbo" did a far better job showing off the way Hollywood was back then.… Expand

This is by far the worst Coen brothers movie. Really seemed like a mashup of a bunch of different stories that didn't seem to coincide at all. After seeing Swinton and Fiennes - I wondered if Wes Anderson could have kept the lunacy going with a stronger narrative. Johansson had a good accent - Clooney and Tatum a gay old time - Hill a line. The movie is not great. The script and story is boring and uninteresting. To give it some credit, part of the movie is funny but not in intellectual level but like clown funny which is disappointing.

19 years. That's how long I've been a Cohen Bros fan. I like all their movies. Even A Serious Man and their more obscure works. But this film just isn't that funny or that entertaining. It's only slightly so.

Decided to see this because it's a Coen bros movie. Yes; great cast; Yes; fabulous period detail, sets etc. Yes, nice concept. HOWEVER....it's not actually very funny. HOWEVER....it's not actually very funny. Perhaps I was negatively influenced by the elderly ladies next to me who giggled inanely and incessantly through every scene. But, seriously most scenes warrant a couple of smiles at best. Josh Brolin is perfect, as is Alden Ehrenreich. Clooney is good as a grinning buffoon (if that's what amuses you). Tilda Swinton does a great job with her one-dimensional character. The cast is largely wasted. Scarlett Johansson shows huge promise but gets only short scenes. Ralph Fiennes is treated the same way - a terrible waste. Don't be fooled by the fawning critics' reviews.… Expand

This film highlighted for me how far out of touch my opinions are with those of the critics. There are some great little sketches in the film replicating some of the classic movie genres of the era. Not very good. While Hail, Caesar! had some fun moments I just couldn't find a way to give a **** about any of the characters. I like most of the Coen brother's movies, and their good ones are fantastic, but man they can make a bad movie too.

My wife and I just left watching "Hail Caesar". It is difficult for us to equate what we just wasted 2 hours on and what the critics scores they gave in their reviews. The movie was organized in a way that took a considerable number of old movie concepts and threw them against a wall. I assure NOT many stuck. Generally the Cohen brothers produce a quality product, they missed this time, BIG time. My wife said, "Give it a D-".… Expand

So disappointing. The basic premise is that a Hollywood actor in the 1950s is kidnapped by communists. Sounds like the setup for a brilliant comedy, right. Nope. It should be over the top and ridiculous, but it's not! The jokes are to infrequent, and the climax is completely underwhelming. If only they had just had someone else make a movie based off the trailer. So sad to see such a brilliant idea wasted… Expand
