Ah, the good ol' military propaganda that justifies invading a country. Yes, this is entertaining, but Guy Ritchie didn't even bother to be subtle with this white savior film.

In exchange for their services, however, they were promised a hefty reward – visas to emigrate to America for themselves and their families. Nevertheless, this promise often came with undisclosed strings, particularly lengthy delays for issuing the documents, leaving the interpreters in the lurch as they anxiously awaited their flight to freedom. Their story is the subject of “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” an amalgamation of the interpreters’ wartime experiences told through the tale of a heroic translator, Ahmed (Dar Salim), who rescues his commanding officer, Sgt. John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal), under perilous conditions but who is subsequently forced into hiding after his story receives widespread attention and makes him a highly valued Taliban target. When Sgt. Kinley is safely at home and hears what happened to his colleague, he vows to return to Afghanistan to secure refuge for the man who saved his life. Movies about extricating those trapped behind enemy lines are common in the annals of filmdom, and this offering is very much cut from the same cloth (save for the venue), so there’s not much that really differentiates it from comparable offerings. However, the film’s superbly executed second half – a far cry better than its overlong, sometimes-tedious first hour – helps to make up for this. The back end also features far better writing than what’s found in the trite, corny war movie dialogue of the opening act. And it helps that the picture has a superb score and is beautifully shot. It’s just unfortunate that the two halves of this release aren’t on par with one another, as that would have made for a much better film, even with a narrative as fundamentally formulaic as this one. I must admit that I’m always somewhat skeptical about movies that have an individual’s name at the beginning of the title (makes me think the studio/distributor is trying too hard to sell it, based on the individual’s reputation than the quality of the work at hand), and I suppose I should have maintained more of that skepticism where this film is concerned. While “The Covenant” is far from a bad picture, it certainly could have been better (or at least better balanced), and then it wouldn’t have had to rely on the director’s name at the top of the marquee to coax viewers into the theater. It would have been a theme congenial to John Milius (does anyone still remember him?), while the peculiar style of the dyslexic director and Madonna's former husband is less so.
PS: Jake with a beard doesn't grow hair on his neck while he's injured. A superfluous detail like the protagonists who always wake up already wearing makeup.

Well-acted and shot, but the "streaming" look & lighting really ruin the immersion.

Unfortunately you can tell this was almost entirely shot inside a movie set.

Not so bad. But not so great as well. If you have an itch to watch a military action movie this may scratch the itch but is somewhat forgettable. The context though is something people may have forgotten about and should remember.

It played as one of those fictionalized documentaries you see on the Military Channel or A&E. Jake Gyllenhaal (does he have something wrong with his voice? He sounded all breathy) seemed to have phoned it in as did the Middle Eastern actor (Ahmed). It just seems I've seen this before and multiple times. I can appreciate the story it's telling, but I'd much rather see a documentary about this. The fictionalized account didn't really add anything. It was a competent action movie and I'm a big Guy Ritchie fan. Expand

Guy Ritchie steps out of the comfort zone in which he had settled with his last three films and opts for a different path of action unlike anything he had done before.

Right off the bat, it has to be admitted that its plot is more of a simple excuse for the action to unfold than anything else, but there are far worse players in this film game, and they are more easily forgiven because they are more accustomed to doing the same thing instead of this director and his star.

If memory serves me right, this is the first warfare movie that Jake Gyllenhaal has starred in since Jarhead and it's clear that he's a better actor than those who usually only do combat action movies.
So it goes without saying that, both in terms of its workmanship and its leading man, The Covenant is above average.

It will hardly leave an impression beyond a few days after seeing it, but I found it a better film than Operation Fortune, The Wrath of Man, Aladdin and his King Arthur. And that's plenty enough.

Ah yes, another Guy Ritchie movie, This one is not too shabby. In fact, a good watch, though the problems in this film hold it back, just a little.

Firstly the music, in the first half of the film doesn't work at all. In the second half, yes it works well.

Secondly, the cinematography is all over the place, I don't mean the scenes are out of place, it's just the shots taken aren't of a good cinematic type, like if you were to be in the film. It just feels like a weird combination of someone holding a camera or wide shots. They work sometimes but most of the time not really.

Thirdly, ok there is no Thirdly since this is based on a true occurrence. Everything else in this movie is good and really captivates you during the second half. So 8/10, If the problems above were fixed it would have been a perfect cinematic translation from real events to film.
Overall I like these films, It shows almost the real struggle soldiers have to go through during their service for their country, while personally, I find war quite stupid (for obvious reasons), I understand that it is a necessary evil for peace.

That's all I'm saying, It's a nice film overall, good job.

The screenplay was just awful, and a good amount of the actors did poorly. It's also largely unbelievable, and the 'brotherhood' or whatever they are trying to portray felt really contrived. Lame and cliche lines like 'you never buy me dinner first', just sound like a first draft. The soundtrack is probably the best thing about this movie. Awesome string work, and it created more tension than any visual thing did. Guy Ritchie has obviously made some classics. But don't forget, this is also the same writer and director who made Swept Away. Expand

The Covenant is none of that. It is the least Guy Ritchie movie he has ever made and it is terrific. It is a suspenseful war thriller with intense action scenes. The subject of Afghanistan military interpreters is taken very seriously and with impressive restraint compared to his usual bombastic style.

The cinematography is great, the score is terrific in elevating the tension, and everyone gives a great performance with special mention to Dar Salim as the interpreter. It is just a very entertaining movie.

Considering this is just "Streaming Content" the movie is decent enough.

The action feels good at first but at the end of the movie you got the usual 30 minions that can not shoot straight and just run to the good guys bullets.

The enemy wasn't full on canon fodder, but definitely the middle of that road. But that was kind of the only part of the action that started leaning towards the "over the top", IMO.

Beyond that: it's not perfect, but definitely one of the better military movies in at least the past few years. Some of the characters were lacking, but held up by some of the major roles. Ahmed was a awesome, and so was Kinley, but both made mistakes that helped ground them from becoming John Wicks. A couple other side characters helped, and the overall story, beats, and pacing worked pretty well. I would honestly give it a 7.5, but since I do think it's worth seeing, I will lean it towards an eight here. Not like there are a ton of 8+ movies the past couple of years IMO, so worth a view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Guy Ritchie is a guys guy. A man of brute wisdom. A cashmere caveman. This isn’t so much a graduation for him in his film making direction, but a gentle reminder that he is THAT man. Jake, phenomenal as always. Ínstense, funny, continuously showing us there is no character he can’t play. Dar is the Dwayne the Rock Johnson in Denmark. Well, hello world. Meet your new Hollywood hero. Dar was the eye of the hurricane in this film and brought both intensity and vulnerability. Bravo. The lads that played the Special Forces squad were on point. We’ll cast group- all solid in their performance. Would have loved to see more of them, but movie must go on.

Tommy Lee Miller, Alexander Ludwig and Anthony Starr, all loved and respected for their own characters on their own shows was a smart casting by the GR team. Bringing in the fans of The Boys, Vikings, Trainspotting (thought I was going to say Elementary didn’t ya?). On point.

Cast was great. Story got to the point. Hollywood action that Tom Cruise keeps trying to bring back into the cinemas- GR DID.

Would love to see if Guy is really up for the next Bond film. Would love to see his take. Snatch meets the Covenant would be prime.
