What: The most original and entertaining horror film since It Follows

When (Can I watch again): When someone thinks All Time Low is punk rock and you need a movie to show them what real punk rock is
Why: In this day and age it seems the only types of horror movies being made are either terrible, sequels, or Paranormal Activity (both). Movies like Green Room only come around once a year if we're lucky.

Jeremy Saulnier's "Green Room" will knock you into next week. Scratch that, next year. Maybe decade. This movie is an unforgiving and brutal piece of thriller cinema.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is only one word that can describe this movie. That word is "real." Green Room was absolutely a very realistic thriller that captivates you from beginning to end. I remember seeing this movie at AMC and it was the only movie in 2016 that grabbed me at the edge of my seat. The story was spectacularly disturbing enough to keep Patrick Stewart monitoring his mansion in case skinheads ty to break in. Jeremy Saulnier's directing was as well-written as Blue Ruin. The gore was very realistic. I used to think gore was pathetic until this movie came out. For example, Pat (played by Anton Yelchin) attempts to give Darcy (played by Patrick Stewart) an unloaded gun behind the door that was less opened; Amber (played by Imogen Poots) noticed through the vent on the door that Darcy wasn't alone, so. Pat struggles to keep the gun from the henchman causing Tiger to use a saber to cut the henchman away from the door. But due to the door being nearly closed without a clear sight, Pat gets his arm nearly sliced off by the saber. I gets scarier when we actually see Pat's open wound so grisly that his hand is nearly falling off with him screaming in severe pain. That was the BEST piece of gore that has ever been put on film because it literally looked like Yelchin really did get his hand sliced open. The authenticity of the gore was really well done. Throughout the movie, I praised Anton Yelchin's performance. He was a very genuine actor to see on the big screen. To his credit, his performance really made the "hand-sliced" scene look realistic. I praised Patrick Stewart's sinister performance and Imogen Poots's performance, but Anton Yelchin is the best actor of the movie because he kept his performance real and captivating. Green Room was awesome that it reunited Yelchin and Poots (the couple from the remake of Fright Night). The saddest scene in the movie was when Yelchin says "I can't die there with you" and Poots replices "so don't." It's said because Yelchin died recently. I saw this movie before he died and I bought this movie on DVD that same day it was released instead of waiting til Black Friday. I wanted it early because I was really heartbroken when I heard about the tragedy. I miss Anton and I will remember by watching Green Room, Star Trek, Fright Night and all the movies he'd been in throughout his career. Green Room was the best movie of 2016 and Anton is the best actor in memory. RIP Anton Yelchin (1989-2016). Expand

A fun, nail-biter of a thriller, Green Room hits all of the right beats, and never tries to reach to un-obtainable heights, but somehow knocks it out of the park. There's not a whole lot of depth to the story, but it is enjoyable nonetheless.

Some hacking and some slashing ensues. There isn't too much gore, but, what little there is, is in fact fairly graphic. The cinematography is way higher than this genre's standard, as is the acting.

The soundtrack to this film is also exceptionally good. (And very much on the punk/metal end of the spectrum.)

The story arc is clean enough - struggling punk band takes a gig and it goes South...way South. But the true accomplishment is the sense of tension, futility, and determination that alternate throughout the movie. Acting is great, direction is great, cinematography is great. The movie doesn't pretend to be art, and it succeeds on its own merits.

I particularly loved the conversion of the punk ethos to the screen. It's dirty, it's desperate, and it's meant to be enjoyed live in an ephemeral moment when audience connects with artists. The fact that this happens in a supremacists bar with non-supremacist musicians is a great example of music connecting people regardless of background, and it was a beautiful scene.

Unfortunately for our protagonists, that was the end of the beauty. As you can tell from the trailer and the other reviews, their journey swiftly moves from musical connection to defense of life and liberty in a hurry. That transition comes quickly (as it would...if you found yourself in that position), and the movie builds a credible amount of tension from then on out.

A lovely film, but be ready for violence and lots of it. Credible violence in an impossible situation, but violence nonetheless. There are about 15 minutes that could have been cut in my opinion, but I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

And hats off to Patrick Stewart! This guy is clearly a defender of the downtrodden in real life, but his depiction of a supremacist Don is absolutely chilling. I guess that's why they call it acting...

There's only one way out and it is to fight back!

From the director of 'Blue Ruin', yet another crime-thriller. This time it revolves around a rock band who trapped in the neo-nazi enclosure on the outskirt of the city. So how do they plan to get away from the green room they're locked in, and armed men are outside waiting for them to take down. The film filled with lots of tense moments and mostly unpredictable stuffs which is a one day event.

I was not surprised, I just expected something as smart as the director's previous film. He retained his favourite actor, Macon Blair to play an important role as their third collaboration in this multistarrer and he once again did well. This theme is not the first time explored, it is a well known, but the setting was very unique. All the actors were amazing, but truly very sad to hear the news about Anton Yelchin. He was a young and a wonderful actor and his '5 to 7' was my favourite.

At first, I thought the plot was so silly. I wondered why they did not use the excessive force as they're capable to tackle such situation. But that's the best part, because they threw away the cliché and approached for something new way to deal it. So the writer, I mean the director did great to carve a rare and thrilling film of the year.

There's no martial arts, criminal gang's collision or the cops fighting the bad guys; it was about how the normal people confront during a hostile situation in the real world. Blue and Green are done, now I'm waiting for the director to announce his next colour project.

This one continues to exhibit his ability to craft an original approach to dark suspense. Anton Yelchin plays a member of a touring punk band. He ends up witnessing something bad backstage after a gig at a gathering place for neo-Nazis. The group is first confused, then terrorized as the club's owner (Patrick Stewart) tries to deal with their inconvenient presence. Even before things go horribly wrong, the characters are compelling and the sense of dread starts to creeps in. While not resorting to expected results (or excessively explicit violence), the tension builds steadily. It's balls to the walls tension and violence for the punk rockers. The Ain't Rights find themselves in a situation that, well, just ain't right. Talk about ending your tour with a bang.

The set up doesn't leave much time for things like character development. That isn't really the point here. You're just here to watch these characters get mixed up in a bad situation and have to fight their way out. When it comes to that, Green Room delivers.

Even better is that it manages to do so in an exciting way. One with excellent tension and believability. It helps that it doesn't shy away from the violence either. It packs a punch and it does so with style. Some great tunes and genuine punk rock style take it over the top, even if some of it gets drowned out by random slow-mo scenes in the earlier part of the film that just feel oddly included. It's a good thing they ditched them early on.

It's simply just an awesome horror-thriller. One with brutality, edge of your seat tension, and some great villains. The acting is top-notch all around and the way everything plays out just feels real. This punk rock band vs. white supremacists performance will have you screaming for an encore.

Green RoomThe third feature film from Jeremy Saulnier, Green Room cements his status as one of the bright young talents in cinema. His second feature, and most notable until now, Blue Ruin was a tremendously brutal and suspenseful thriller. Green Room is pretty much the same deal, just shrouded in green and far more of a contained thriller than his previous effort. Starring Anton Yelchin, Imogen Potts, and Patrick Stewart, Green Room is a thriller about a punk band that witnesses a brutal murder while after performing for a group of neo-nazis. Now, they must escape while every neo-nazi in sight tries to keep them trapped.

In one of his final films released before his death (if not the final), Anton Yelchin is magnetic as Pat, the bassist of the band. As Amber, a girl who witnesses the murder, Imogen Potts is equally terrific. However, both pale in comparison to the performance of Patrick Stewart as Darcy, the leader of the neo-nazis. Ruthless, brutal, and quite sadistic, his Darcy is a fear-inducing character written with real menace by Saulnier. Stewart's performance is so captivating, he instills the viewer with fear even when he is off-screen.

In terms of his direction, Saulnier's Green Room is incredibly tight and focused. The film introduces very little in the way of subplots and even when it does, it reduces them to ash immediately. It is incredibly focused on the survival element at play here and every effort is poured into that area. In this area, Saulnier creates tension at every turn. Though the film is quite short, Saulnier is not afraid to take his time to create atmosphere and elicit tension through repeated sequences of uncertainty and attempted escapes. Unlike many thrillers/horror films, Green Room has no cheap thrills. Instead, they are well-earned.

Green Room is an incredibly violent picture with an unabashed love for boxcutters that has been unseen since 2014's Gone Girl. Ideally, Rosamund Pike and Imogen Potts are ushering in a new trend: blonde women with boxcutters. Just as in Blue Ruin, Saulnier is not afraid to get graphic, but he uses this violence well. It is not just violence for the sake of itself. Rather, it is violence that leaves the viewer in shock, regardless of whether it was expected or not.

However, one area in which the film can be improved is character development. Though incredibly tense, the film does very little to develop any of its characters, which kind of deprives the emotional impact of each individual's death to a degree. Plus, there are so many players in this film, it can be hard to keep track, especially when it comes to the neo-nazis. Additionally, though the film introduces neo-nazi characters, Saulnier never really uses it for any political symbolism. Sure, the punk band sings an anti-nazi song and makes a few comments about them, but it is hardly a major focus. While the film is an incredible thriller, it could have a more nuanced film with some kind of subtle statement about neo-nazis in modern day America, but that is just personal preference, I guess, so not really a criticism or a reason as to why this one is rated as it is.

As a whole, Green Room is a terrifically entertaining and intense thriller that is not shy about showing the audience casually brutal violence. Saulnier is one heck of a talent and his next work will be yet another must watch.

Even theThe credible and the incredible meet to baffling effect in this strangely confused and confusing thriller. Ambiguous plot points and unexplained story elements leave one cold and, for a short film, it sure does out stay its welcome. Even the gore and horror moments are inconsistent and the visual effects make-up looks too unconvincingly rubbery to truly shock. The fact that someone with the type of hand injury as demonstrated here could go from victim to avenging vigilante is demonstrative of just how ludicrous aspects of the story are, and that’s before we start dissecting the paint ball theory. The familiar face of Patrick Stewart further distances credibility. His part called for someone of anonymity in the role and, whilst he is perfectly acceptable, you can’t help but think that it’s Patrick Stewart from the enterprise. The film also fails to thrill as it should and only comes to life momentarily when the victims start to fight back. Even then cast members disappear with a cough and a spit, gorily, but with none of the fanfare of tension that usually prolongs such situations in the best thriller/horror movies. Green Room may have one foot in the real world, but the other is definitely in the realms of fantasy. Expand

I can count on one hand the amount of films that have made me jump (and they usually require a cinema or very good surround sound) but this had one of the greatest "jumps" i've ever had in a film. It was the shear suddenness (if that's a word) of a characters demise where both me and the wife went "f****** hell!".
Actually if i'm being honest, the only weak link was Patrick Stewart. He's not bad, but he's not as menacing as he should be, his accent's all over the place and his look is pure Walter White rip-off. I think to sum it up, it feels like a British film (coming from a brit) which I think is a compliment. The violence is brutal, there's no slow motion, there's no annoying love story, it's just pure brutal violent excellence!
To the people that give this a low score I really don't know what you want from a film. I suppose you want some more PG-13 horror remakes.
PS, the final line is brilliant :D

Man this thriller really hits you. A pretty horrible situation that could just happen to you if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time. What a ride, what a nightmare, what a performance!

I think the unpredictability is key to what makes the film so entertaining. However, completely irrational decisions by characters, and the distractingly bizarre inclusion of Patrick Stewart, do slightly ruin what could of been a great film.

Is what it wants to be.

Lastly, how much it ruined my experience of the film, I do not know, but I was baffled by every conversation the baddies had. Their conversations seemed to have no context; maybe it was filler. Either way, it sort of diminished their threatening appearance.

Two more mismatched humans would be hard to find. Tony has his own prejudice to overcome and it happens as he watches how Doc is treated with both respect and as a much lesser being. He becomes increasingly protective of Doc and doesn’t understand his ability to treat those who disrespect him with such respect. The growing brotherhood between the two men is a wondrous thing to watch. Tony becomes a much better person through his association with Doc. Very serious subject, but told with such humor and humanity. Absolutely loved it! Expand

The fact that it took me (almost) 3 months to make a review on this movie surprises me, but hey, here we go with Green Room. Green Room has that dark tone that most horror films didn't have in the first place.

Patrick Stewart is on top form in an unusual and very welcome bad guy role as a neo nazi tyrant, who's character is very thought provoking. The script is good, the acting is pretty good, but the direction and editing I take my hat off, it's first class. To summarise It delivers a hard punch and shocks at irregular intervals which keeps the tension gripping you like a serpent throughout the film, but amidst the nightmare is a very beautifully shot and directed movie.

Green Room is an enjoyable, violent, gory, and suspenseful movie. It may not be one of the greatest movies of 2016, but it deserves some recognition.

Characters/Acting: Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots are amazing, and the rest of the cast, especially Patrick Stewart, definitely chip in to make this movie great. The characters are maybe a tad underwritten, as I've seen some people complain about it. Only a few of the characters really get an ark, and the others don't. But I felt the movie still did an okay job with the characters and their development overall.

Plot: One major complaint I have is that sometimes it was a bit hard to figure out what was going on. There were a few scenes where a bunch of new information was introduced, and it took me time to figure it out, taking away from the movie. The movie is still relatively slow paced throughout, but it didn't bore me. It also starts out a bit slow, before the band gets to the green room. I almost thought I had rented the wrong movie, since it starts out with a more quiet, slow tone and goes by very slowly. Luckily the tension builds up through the movie, ending in pure violence and intensity.

Violence: It's not constant blood and gore, but Green Room definitely has its scenes of brutal violence and gore. One of the only movies that I can remember in recent times that made me cringe at the realistic brutality and blood. The film doesn't exaggerate though, making it feel all the more realistic. For example: when someone gets a machete to the neck, half their head or their whole head doesn't come off; the blade only makes a shallow cut, deep enough to kill though. This made it feel more realistic and not laughable like other horror movies that try too hard to make the audience flinch at the violence.

Tone: The tone is incredibly dark as you can imagine, and the set design as well as the lighting really adds to the dark, violent, murky mood.

Overall, don't watch Green Room if you are squeamish of violence and brutality, because there's plenty of this in Green Room.

I think that this is one of the better thrillers out there and is definitely Saulnier's best movie as of Hold the Dark's release. While this movie does paint with generally broad strokes, it does manage to hit many interesting things in such cross-fire. Most notably, this movie serves as a satire of trashy horror films, especially with the line, "Maybe we should split up" "Totally".
There are some great performances in this movie as well, Anton Yelchin, Patrick Stewart, and Imogen Poots each had their own pulls whilst on screen. In addition to this, this movie is also brutally gory, while at the same time maintaining an air of comedy. The fact that the movie takes place over a music venue adds a lot to the movie and makes it feel more genuine. While the skinhead Nazi punks felt sort of tacked on, seeing Patrick Stewart as a skinhead was really fun. The skinheads served two purposes in the movie. First off, their inclusion allowed the 'subtle' delivery of the song "Nazi Punks **** Off". Secondly, they serve as a critique of the subservient nature of the fascist alt-right, i.e. killing musicians for different coloured shoelaces. If you are someone who enjoys cheap horror movies or thrillers, definitely check this one out, I'd say its worth the watch, especially as it is one of Yelchin's last films.

It follows a small-time metal band as they land a gig at a bar and travel there to perform. Little did they know it's a Neo-Nazi bar, and when they walk in on a murder scene things turn hostile. The main characters truly feel trapped and at times it seems like there's no way any of them will survive. The action is brutal and intense, but it isn't an over-dramatized gore-fest. The story is realistic but not over complicated, and that's arguably the best part about this film. This is a must watch for thriller fans. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jeremy Saulnier's exciting, thrilling, backwoods violence film Green Room is one of the most simple, yet compelling movies you could ever watch. The plot is relatively straightforward, but how it goes from calm to **** crazy is enough to keep you hooked and curious up until the very last scene. The characters are somehow relatable, yet the short runtime cuts off any character development. There are also too many implied scenes, and viewers have had to guess some character motivations. The dialogue also sounds vague, sometimes, but it makes up with the action that follows. Overall, Green Room is a film that will shock, terrify and gratify you, long after the credits have gone. From then on it's a suspenseful horror where the band tries desperately to get out of this situation. The first time I saw this I hadn't looked at the credits and Patrick Stewart's inclusion knocked me off my feet. He gives a chilling performance as a cool headed, leader of the Neo-Nazi's that is completely in his element and steers the situation with an almost mechanical malevolence.
