Grave Encounters is clearly one of the most terrifying found-footage films ever made. I don't usually get scared by watching films or TV shows because it gave me really good scares. Although it doesn't have a really good cast or much of an "awesome" plot but despite that it manages to deliver the horror to you. A few scenes were really lame and should have been eliminated at the time of editing but well, as they say that nothing can ever be perfect. I really appreciate the effort of the Vicious Brothers for writing and directing this film. I don't know why the so called critics have disliked this film, I think they got scared too much and were not in their right senses when reviewing this film. This is a must watch for horror fans. I know there are a lot of really good horror films out there but this film, at least, deserves a watch. I hope you won't be disappointed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a really fun found footage flick. It's not totally original in terms of story, but the idea of a phony ghost-hunter style TV show that ends up in a real haunted asylum is an interesting premise. The film does rely on jump scares, but there is some raw tension as well. Also, the asylum's rooms, hallways, and doors can move around, causing a feeling of disorientation and claustrophobia. Definitely worth a watch with a few friends. Expand

The part where the hospital begins to become a ghost train... it was ok, for the low cost that the film shows. The important thing is see the warning "do not believe in the kind of nonsense." Not bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen. It stuns me that people wouldn't be able to appreciate the raw terror put into this movie. For myself, I love scary movies and try my hardest to get as scared as I possibly can. The first time I saw Grave Encounters, it made me scream, and it made me so scared that I wanted to cry. This is the kind of scary that I look for in a movie. To really be scared, you have to understand that it's all psychological. The idea of being trapped with mentally unstable ghosts is enough to freak me out just by the thought. They give this idea life in the movie. It seems like nothing at first. The crew of ghost hunters can't seem to find any proof of ghosts. The first real occurrence of any entity is away from the characters, when the window opens. The next is the door slamming behind camera man TC, and after that Sasha's hair gets moved by nothing. Each thing gradually gets more and more scary. The events after that is that tech guy Matt goes missing, and the characters start to believe that the place is actually haunted. Nothing absolutely terrifying has yet happened. There is one part that completely changes the movie over. The characters are wandering the halls, looking for Matt, freaked out by this point, when they hear screaming. They run to it, assuming its Matt. They enter a room, and the cameras, still filming in night vision, catches a girl, facing the corner of the wall. She's wearing what appears to be a hospital gown, which blood stains everywhere and all ripped up. Paralyzed by fear, they are unsure what to do. At some point the girl, or ghost, turns around and her her face is like a demon's. At that point in the movie, I realized that the creators weren't afraid to shove the scariest things right in your face. Many scary movies unfortunately try to let you use your imagination to scare you more. This, so me, doesn't work all the time. I want to see things that scare the hell out of me. And this movie achieved that. Expand

The problem with scary flicks is that you don't know whether they're good unless you watch them, but Grave Encounters freaking delivered. The makers of this film understand how to properly build up the fear before everything goes nuts, and when it goes nuts, they used every weapon in their arsenal. The sounds made by the ghosts/dark beasts were just amazing; the first time you hear one of them roaring through the asylum you know you're watching something special. I like to see the creature if it exists, and was pleased by the visuals. So in short, let's put it this way... Could I see myself in a situation like this being terrified out of my mind? Oh yeah. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though I did not actually find this movie scary, I must commend it on its creativity. It is full of dark ideas that were integrated into the story beautifully. It may have taken quite a while to get off the ground, but once it did it kept me intrigued until the very end. It does have its flaws: the characters are all annoying messes of personality that I just wanted to see become victims (and don't worry, they all do eventually), and the effects are overdone enough that the movie's attempt to seem "real" was not at all believable. However, there is enough good (and by good, I really mean dark and twisted) stuff in this film that it is definitely worth watching, beyond a doubt. I have heard that a sequel is in the making, and that is very good news, because I want more! Expand

Grave Encounters was one of the most interesting films I've seen inawhile. I rate it low because the effects, and the suspense you get watching this was astounding. I seriously love the concept of this being a found fottage type. If this would have just been a normal film, It would have been boring.

GOOD THINGS ABOUT THE MOVIE
------------------------------------------------
+ Great effects
+ Great acting
+ Amazing mental hospital
+ Very interesting plotline

BAD THINGS ABOUT THE MOVIE
---------------------------------------------
- Repetitive
- Predictable

- A little boring

With all this said, Grave encounters was a great movie..At least it was better than the second guys!

What I got was a very interesting mix of the two. This movie had a lot of great elements and twists that aren't in most standard haunted house movies. It really took a turn for Silent Hill and it instantly sucked me in. It also didn't take itself too seriously and had fun. This is one I looked forward to watching again with friends. Expand

Grave Encounters brings enough scares and believable acting (especially from Sean Rogerson) to entertain even the toughest horror buff, and in the process proves that found footage films have not lost their touch.

Summary: In spite of being a very flawed film, Grave Encounters deserves some credit for its terrific scares and claustrophobic setting. 80/100 [B+]

For their ghost hunting reality show, a production crew locks themselves inside an abandoned mental hospital that's supposedly haunted - and it might prove to be all too true. Grave Encounters is written and directed by The Vicious Brothers. I have to admit that in spite of its flaws, it is one of my favorite found-footage films of all time, it has a very scary atmosphere and unforgettable scares. Grave Encounters is an audience pleaser. It is that kind of horror film that you re-watch every Halloween with some friends and snacks. It is suspenseful, memorable and bloody; I love it. It's an amazing ride, and of course a guilty pleasure. Moving on, the film starts slow and introduces us to its characters, also there were some silly and bad-acted moments in the first act.

The main character, "Lance Preston" performed by Sean Rogerson was quite objective, you don't hate him, but you don't like him either. The rest of the characters were somewhat likable, except for the black guy called "T.C. Gibson", performed by Merwin Mondesir. His character was annoying and cliche, but the script helped him a lot, and you can empathize with him sometimes. The only female in the film "Sasha" performed by Ashleigh Gryzko, was quite believable, her acting was realistic and effective. The acting in this movie was generally good. After the introduction of the characters, the crew locks themselves inside of the abandoned mental hospital and the fun begins... for us. It is bloody, twisted and messed up. It is a pleasant found-footage film. The excitement that produced in me was just incredible.

The Vicious Brothers direct with precision, and they build a consistent atmosphere throughout the film. I loved the skepticism of the characters during the first half of the film. The first creepy scenes were effective, for example: wheelchairs and creaky doors moving by themselves. All of these scares were cliche, but Grave Encounters is still effectively creepy because it has the right amount of suspense in its scares, it has a great build-up suspense. I also want to add that its found-footage execution makes sense, and the footage looked very realistic at times. Moving on, the second half of the film is a huge disaster (in a good way), it has lots of effective jump-scares and bloody violence. The payoff was astonishing, it delivered so many good scares. This movie boasts one of the most eerie settings I've ever seen in a found-footage film.

This second half was constant, it was a huge climax that never stops. The sound effects were awesome, but I have to admit that the special effects were a little bit crappy because of the budget. The CGI was awful. However, it doesn't matter because the film keeps the intensity all the time, scare after scare. The whole asylum is a scary maze. Some of the characters were annoying, but the whole situation was understandable. If I were in that situation, I would be as angry as them. As I said in the summary, this movie deserves some credit for its strengths. It has flaws, such as: lots of non-scary ghosts with big mouths, annoying characters, a few bad performances, dumb actions by the characters, and average special effects. But who cares? It's still creepy as hell. [B+]

When the deep rumbling sounds took over the shot you knew something was about to happen and then bam. I had more moments were I actually jumped while watching this film than I have had in any other ghost story in a long while. The actual acting flips back and forth on credibility but for the most part the characters were played with truth and believability. They gave completely to the emotion of the story and made you feel their terror. For me that says a lot about a film. If you relate and belief that actor is the part then you believe the story. This film does that for me.

The special effects where top notch. From the hair being pulled away to the evil spirits clinging to the wall were killer. The entity presence visible shots were really intense and dark. Great attention to the special effects were taken serious in this film. The whole story leading from the point of entering the building down the spiral to insanity and into the bowls of psychiatric hell was fluid and cohesive completely. I found no real wholes in the story or the back story. This is truly a much better paranormal film compared to several others that fought for recognition lately. I totally intend to add this to my collection and enjoy it over and over.

What isWith shows like 'Ghost Hunters' that explored the paranormal (but often staged) events hitting their peak in popularity, Grave Encounters released at the right time to parody these low budget formats for it's own found footage story. What is at the core of this film is hubris, where the frauds become the exploited. I think it is safe to say that this film's legacy lives on in games such as Outcast 1 and 2 which go to great lengths to simulate handheld movement and UI. Negative reviews I notice are short and uninformative so I'd suggest you just see it yourself, or you know, listen to the ten year olds that says 'this sukz' Expand
