The premise and Robin Williams are great, but the rest is utterly a disappointment.

The audience is meant to believe that Matt Damon's character is smart because he writes mathematic gibberish on a black board conveniently placed in a walk way for a janitor to draw on, I was never convinced he was the genius the movie claimed him to be. The movie has good acting if you consider characters yelling and swearing at each other for 3 quarters of the movie for little reason and for nothing you will care about. In the end I never cared about the films characters nor did I find them relatable. Pass Expand

The movie itself is OK, and some of it is really interesting. But, two Afflecks in the same movie? I mean, whose idea was this? Was it suposed to be funny?

Robin Williams is okay, the message is inoffensive, it serves fine in that respect. But by no means is it special. Even if it was relatively original for its time, this is just another hefty serving of Robin Williams ego-porn. "He's a genius". "This is unorthodox". The whole stupid slew of quirky-but-good nonsense audiences eat up to make them feel like they've achieved something. The protagonist is bland, annoyingly shallow and eerily 2d. He exists purely for the audience to relate to so when he is told he is oh-so-bloody-great the audience will feel complimented, proud, and therefore enjoy it. Anyone looking for a story however will find bland, unoriginal pandering and little else. It may have been one of the first films to do this trope, but today with all the times we see this bland predictable little sketch it simply can't be justified to watch unless you have some deep personal connection with Robocop. I mean Matt Damon. I mean WIll. Bland, competently well done, mostly well-acted but in the end utterly forgettable and lacking substance.

And don't go all artsy on me, that symbolism they toss in is clumsy and obvious as it gets. I was told "You'll like this. It's a smart movie." It isn't. It's ego-porn. Make no mistake.

It's easy to tell how the film is going to end and how events are going to play out within the first 10 minutes of watching. The film unrealistically portrays mathematics as being something easy to grasp for someone with such a high intellect. No "super genius" can solve complex math problems the way Will does. Matt Damon's and Robin William's performances are exceptional. Expand

Good Will Hunting keeps you engaged by its incredible performances from Robin Williams and Matt Damon, but it's conventional plot and unoriginal love scenes hinder the film from being anything special.

Their chemistry is very strong and the ideas and values they talk about are both fascinating and engaging. I wish that this whole film's plot could've just solely been about these two, but disappointingly, the screenplay written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck is too incompetent (it's a good thing they stuck to acting I suppose). In between the thought-provoking scenes involving Damon and Williams is a cliché-ridden story told with characters that are not engaging nor have enough backstory for us, the audience, to care about. All I need to say is that it is a romance plot with the titular character and a girl and there's a misunderstood fight between them and....ugh....yeah. It's that same old 'song and dance' we all achingly know. In fact, the effect the film had on me was a tug-of-war, pulling me back and forth between smart characters with smart dialogue and dumb characters with dumb dialogue. I'm teetering on the fence for "Good Will Hunting". I want to like this film, but I just can't stomach its amateur plot peppered with intelligent scenes. It (sadly) comes across as Hollywood trying to relate with the smart crowd and failing, which in turn, makes for a phony film. Expand

I've always found this movie a little bit overrated since it is an ordinary movie with an ordinary screenplay directed by a great director that here only manages to make his work without giving the passion he gave in his previous films.I've always found this movie a little bit overrated since it is an ordinary movie with an ordinary screenplay directed by a great director that here only manages to make his work without giving the passion he gave in his previous films.
