An enjoyable movie, and if you start thinking of all the possibilities of all the answers to the death story from the beginning.. Gone Girl had a predictable but yet an enjoyable, dark, and nonetheless, twisted story line.

The real thing that takes the prize in this movie is Rosamund Pike's acting. Should get a Best Actress nominee, and maybe even bring the oscar home. maybe.

solid 8.5/10.

Fincher directs with his usual superb class, giving the film great style and keeping the story alive(Gone Girl is easily one of the year's best directed films), and the whole film looks absolutely great with brooding lighting that evokes the creepy atmosphere brilliantly and Gone Girl is also a film that makes good use of digital, after seeing many directors over-using or cheapening it it was refreshing to see the technique done with taste. Trent Rezner and Atticus Ross's music score gives the film a haunting vibe and adds much to the unsettling intensity that a lot of the film(at least two-thirds worth), managing to not do it in an in-your-face manner. The use of sound mixing was interesting and came off cleverly, almost like a distant thought process. Gone Girl also has a brilliantly written and adapted script that does a great job balancing dark humour- that's not overused and is often hilarious- and suspense mystery (The Cool Girl monologue in particular is a masterpiece of script-writing, one of my favourite film monologues ever), while the story(apart from taking a bit of time to get starting) is absorbing from start to finish, rich in detail and characterisation and is filled with shocks and unpredictable twists that will be guaranteed to leave you reeling. That it is adapted from superb source material(one of the best books I've read in recent memory actually) helps it, and that it is faithful to it is commendable, a case of being faithful to the source material actually coming off wonders rather than being bogged down by being too faithful. The not-what-they-seem characters are incredibly interesting and richly developed, especially Amy who is one of the most chilling female characters of the year. And the acting is one of the high points of the film, as good as Fincher's direction and the score are it's Rosamund Pike's knockout turn as Amy in restrained- she only has to raise an eyebrow or something like that and it says a lot- but quite terrifying mode(especially in the third act) that makes the film. It will be a great surprise if she isn't at least nominated because it is easily her best performance. Ben Affleck has the other not-what-they-seem role and plays it with oozing charm and brooding intensity, while Neil Patrick Harris surprisingly excels in a very against-type role(who knew he could be sinister?) and Tyler Perry oozes charisma and is very funny. Carrie Coon is the standout in support, it's a tricky role and the moral compass of the film but Coon is touchingly likable in it. The ending does for my liking end too suddenly and the storytelling got implausible and lazy at this point, but apart from that Gone Girl was a winner and one of the best of the year. 9/10 Bethany Cox Expand

Ben Affleck is Nick Dunne has returned home and as he went home, he found his wife, Amy played by the lovely Rosamund Pike, missing. As his flashbacks go on when he first met Amy, Nick is being accused of murdering his wife, Well, you can learn that it's not scandalous just like other cinematography from David Fincher to film. There are no words to describe how great this film is. Rosamund Pike did a fantastic performance along with Ben Affleck and the other cast. The writing is great and the directing style is impressive too. You can't really go wrong. It is a fantastic film with a plot twist at the end even though I'm not going to spoil it. But if it's anything having to do with this, is that it got me and you on the edge of our seats. Expand

Gone Girl is a thrilling and emotionally jarring piece of cinema that subverts the romance and crime genres into a more modern and bleaker world. The film is also one of the first to explore the impact that “fake news” and rhetorically driven pundits have on society. While these elements are present in the book from which the film is adapted, Fincher takes them and throws them under the magnifying glass. The most remarkable thing about the movie, however, is that Tyler Perry, of noted Medea fame, gives a great performance. All players give great performances. Affleck likely giving the best of his career so far. Gone Girl is so insanely purposeful with all its elements that it feels as if the viewer is watching a real news story unfold. At times the movie is manipulative, but it does so admittingly and in a manner that is simultaneously thematically and socially driven. Fincher works excellently with crime subjects. Pieces like Se7en and Gone Girl show that he understands the genre as it currently exists and as it will exist in the future. Gone Girl starts with a steady gallop, but once it gets going it never stops until it gets right back where it started. In a way, the end is built into the beginning, but the middle gives context to the end. Expand

This is a 2.5 hour movie and sometimes these days it's difficult for me to stick with the longer movies but this never felt long. You were always curious what was going on. Let's just say it didn't quite go the way I expected but I was intrigued the whole time. The acting was great. This could for sure be considered a slow burn and I'm actually currently watching the TV show Sharp Objects by the same author and this is paced much better than that. There's a couple things I didn't particularly thing got solved or like how they went at the end but overall a great movie..

Masterfully edited, and full of humor with plenty of twists and turns that keep you guessing and giggling along the way. Great lead performances from Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. The story and thematic elements to this are intricate and not easy to pull off or execute, and David Fincher does it with gripping ease and elegance. It is a great looking movie with an original story and is not afraid to go as far as it can possibly go with its material. Great pacing and a fun watch with a few OMG jaw-dropping moments mixed in.

First of all, the characters and their relationships are very well developed, establishing the moral of each one, representing their own stereotypes and then breaking them; second, the narration style is preserved, immersing the viewer in the game/conflict between Nick and Amy, creating a serious reflexion about how marriage changes people or how people change for their marriage; and third, the twists in the storyline that mess with your mind. David Fincher definitely was a great choice for directing this crime novel, and we see him in all its glory, such as Se7en or Fight Club. The problem is that Gone Girl is more than that, is a combination with a psychological thriller (characteristic more distinguishable in the book), and is here where Fincher fails; the torment and questioning that invades not only the protagonists, but also Go and Amy's parents, its not so clear in the film. Another huge problem is Ben Affleck, he makes Nick a static character, its impossible to empathize with him, though same parts of the movie requires it, others not. Nevertheless, Rosamund Pike is magnificent as Amy, which compensates everything. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. GONE GIRL finally arrives in the cinema here, so what could be more appropriate than Fincher’s vastly anticipated and razor-sharp dissection of modern marriage/relationship for a Halloween night? The aftermath of this trendsetting thriller can impact abidingly on one’s memory not only for its plot twist but also a brave ending which dares to defy the accepted mode of “perpetrator gets punished in the end”, and intrigues viewers to inspect our own quotidian bearings and give an inscrutable glimpse to our partner.

Adapted from Gillian Flynn’s bestseller of the same name, who is also the sole person credited for the screenplay here, so it secures there is no creative discordance as far as the storyline is concerned. GONE GIRL is already Fincher’s highest grossing film in North America, surpasses THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (2008, 7/10)’s $127 millions record. It is also Fincher’s third collaboration with Trent Reznor (from Nine Inch Nails) and Atticus Boss, after THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010, 9/10) and THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (2011, 8/10). Prominently the duo’s droning score conjures up an underplayed perturbing ambience which sits perfectly along Fincher’s aloof palette and the central performances from Affleck and Pike.

Picking up from Fight Club, it's almost like Fincher thought about this novel adaptation and thought, "Okay... how can I make that bigger? How can I make that better?" Being an artist of suspense of Hitchcock-ian proportions, Fincher engages us throughout with fist-balling mystery, moral ambiguity, worldly satires and a psychotically jumpy plot progression that mirrors the portrait of which it aims to be. Gone Girl is a treasure hunt that may have gone too long, and gotten too ahead of itself - but the overwhelming sense of dread and atmosphere is enough to tip me over to the other side. Rosamund Pike's performance is to the film as Ledger was to 'The Dark Knight', delivering the crisp, cold and sinister psychopath that takes a lot of the credit for pushing the story to its limits. Disturbing, engaging, raunchy and provocative, Gone Girl is an impeccable magnifying glass into the minds of the clinically insane. Expand

At really no point does it lag and while it is certainly very slow at times, it never becomes boring and leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat for much of it. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike are stellar here, as are Neil Patrick Harris and (oddly) Tyler Perry. The cast, on paper, seemed odd, but in practice, David Fincher shows why he is one of the best around and got the best out of everybody. The general feel and mood of the film is also brilliant and entirely chilling. However, beyond the whole murder mystery type deal, the most interesting part to me here was the total indictment of the media and the 24 hour news cycle, which Fincher does a great job showcasing throughout and how the media will believe just about anything and then jump to conclusions based off of what small information they may have. The twists and turns here are also very interesting and the script from Gillian Flynn is very strong. The way the story was told at times was odd, but that would be my only complaint really and it was nothing major. As a whole, this is certanly not Fincher's best work (Seven, Fight Club, and Zodiac, would be my top three from him), but it is certainly not his worst (excluding Alien 3) and is overall, a very well made, well acted thriller that will leave you wanting more. Would be surprised if Affleck and Pike are not major contenders at the Oscars. Expand

The film also manages to be a very entertaining thriller that has you gripped from the first scene as our protagonist Nick, portrayed by Ben Affleck, tries to figure out what has happened to his wife Amy, played by Rosamund Pike who absolutely steals the show. Gone Girl is smart, slick and enthralling psychological thriller that i recommend everybody to watch. Biggest flaws is probably the fact that the film is rather long (i needed to pee real bad) and the fact that after things became clear the film changes past which I found a little jarring and the conclusion is very dream-like and takes away from the realism of which the film presented from the beginning. Truly the star of the show is Rosamund Pike, and its becoming a strange trend that Bond girls 10 years from their performance in 007 movies get to achieve greater things. Famke Jansen in Goldeneye 1995 played that insanely powerful witch-like figure in X-Men 3 (OK let's ignore how terrible that movie is to some). Rosamund here manages to exude the performance necessary for her character, and then some.

Ben Affleck, on the other hand, is less stellar, but probably because of how his character is written. Though a matter of personal preference, I always get thrown off by how similar he looks to Ryan Reynolds. He presents himself as a husband that doesn't seem to be as loving to his wife as some may think, and the movie brilliantly highlights these quirks, and explore why he is behaving in such a manner. Without going into too much spoiler, the reason for his behaviour is central to the plot of Pike's disappearance, but not in a straightforward manner as some might guess from the trailer.

And as mentioned, there is a sociopath in the movie, and its one that is beautifully written and acted. It truly shines on how this character manages to find the weakness in social expectations, behaviour, norms, and the justice system. The court of public opinion is a terrible thing once it goes against you, and this character knows it and exploits it, without remorse. I truly feel hatred for this villain, not because of the genius behind the crime, but because of the very rules of "normal" we as a collective society bind ourselves to that stops justice from being delivered, and this sociopath knows it.

There are some social issues on economic recession, job losses, and the "talk shows" that powerfully influence the public opinion. This is quite strong in the first and second act, but by the third, it does dial down due to how the plot is laid out.

What I don't like about the movie is some of the cinematography involved. Its clear from the opening credits that there are lots of fade in and out effects used in certain scenes, and quick transitions. Whilst it may work for some, there are certain scenes that lowered the intended impact and made me feel like I'm passing out.

This is also an 18+ movie; there are sex scenes here that are very open, though non-pornographic in nature. Just a reminder in case they didn't tell you so in the cinema.

Finally, its 2 hours and 50 minutes long. Its not that bad until the third act, where the direction of the movie could sometimes be a bit meandering, though not painfully dragging its feet. Though considering the emotional impact from how the second act concluded, you might not find what you truly are looking for by the closing of the movie.

Ben Affleck is also very good in his role and seems like he keeps growing as an actor (apart from as a director). The film is long but doesn´t feel like it. You want more. Its slightly corny tone at times is totally intended although it may not be for everybody. My biggest complain would be that the ending drags a little bit, which I was loving until the film ended, because suddenly I realized it didn´t leave me totally satisfied. But still great and a really surprising film thanks to its very misleading promotional campaign, which is always something to be thankful for. Expand

Rosamund Pike acts brilliantly, though that could be said about the entire female cast, and she's able to hold the tension while playing essentially two different characters. Ben Affleck's a bit blunt but I guess that's his style. And man, I still can't watch Neil Patrick Harris without thinking of Barney.

Fincher presented us with a great work of form and managed to keep the substance alive. Now, a couple of plot twists were a little too expedite in my opinion, but all in all it deserves the praise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw Gone Girl when I was home for a week last Halloween, a time during which I was watching a combination of old James Bond films and schlocky slashers like Scream (1996) and Freddy vs. Jason (2003) all films which are more cheesy than scary. During my one trip to the cinema that week, Gone Girl was the film which kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a real thriller with horrifying scenes making it almost a horror film itself.

I’m not going to spoil details of a plot which works best as a mystery, but the premise is that Midwestern everyman Nick Dunne (Ben Afflek) returns home one day (his fifth wedding anniversary no less) to find his glamorous wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) missing. The ensuing media circus then throws Nick into suspicion.

The film’s strength is its manipulation of the viewer. We follow and side with Nick initially; Ben Afflek plays him as fairly neutral, a blank slate. Maybe he’s too passive in the face of his wife’s disappearance. Is he guilty or does he simply not know how to react? He seems likeable enough, but there’s something just behind it.

During the first act the couple’s relationship is told through flashbacks, incorporating segments of Amy’s diary, and we gradually begin to side with her. These dual narrative strands are apparently from the original wildly popular novel by Gillian Flynn, who wrote the screenplay. We must be in safe hands.

David Fincher, whose last film was the English-language remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, retains something of the Nordic noir to Gone Girl. The film is full of darkness, sex and violence. Camera angles are sweeping and the scenery both bleak and beautiful. At the heart of the film is an exploration of humanity which is divisive and ambiguous.

Though a long film, it is never boring. There was a point around halfway through when some kind of resolution seems to have been reached, but the film keeps going and the pace and intensity increases. Rosamund Pike’s role increases as the story progresses and without giving too much away, her performance is powerful.

Role and image are major themes. On some level, everyone is playing a part, deliberately projecting or hiding behind a facade. Amy has been fictionalised by her writer parents in the overblown, saccharine Amazing Amy books which she has never been able to live up to. She has a place in the public eye and this is why the press descends so rapidly on the case.

As the audience struggles to understand his psyche, Nick is struggling to appease the exploitative media. He hires Tanner Bolt (Tyler Perry), a lawyer specialising in image and defending suspected husbands. Perry’s role is dramatic but played with a much needed balancing touch of humour. Of note too is Neil Patrick Harris’s rare straight role as Amy’s ex-boyfriend Desi.

The music, from serene yet ominous ambient soundscapes to throbbing electronica was composed by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and his producer Atticus Ross who have collaborated on Fincher’s last two films. In keeping with the theses of this film, they have created a score which is simultaneously soothing and unnerving.

I’ll finish by acknowledging that there are some plot holes in the decidedly complicated narrative, particularly paper trails, alibis and the possible existence of exonerating security footage. Again, I won’t go into too much detail, but at one point a detective begins to question such a hole but is quickly shot down.

Presumably these details would come to light sometime later during the inevitable long investigation. The case ends far from closed. But the film is more than just the plot, which is nevertheless engaging. As a piece of film making, the themes, music and visuals remain powerful.

A thoroughly entertaining and thoughtful film. Twisted, enough so to make your stomach turn a few times, and inventive, but also timely.

There are dramatic conceits to be sure, but anyone who thinks that a woman can't be this crazy hasn't been following the news. Far from being misogynistic, if anything it's hard on men, portraying Nick as a loser who can't control his sex drive and the rest of the movie's men as being dupes and fools. The women, conversely, range from the titular Machiavellian **** from Hell to Nick's loyal twin sister, the one genuinely competent police officer, the predatory ratings-driven talk show host, the innocent coed, and yes, a variety of dupes and fools as well. If any film has attacked gender politics more smartly and more fairly, I've not seen it.

And it makes for a thrilling ride. An audience desensitized to violence will likely be upset by some of the scenes. Piercing cultural critiques and sarcastically written laugh lines alternate with disturbing plot twists. And how often can you say "man, Tyler Perry was perfect in that role"? I wish they had held the main plot twist a bit longer, and, like the book, alternated more into the titular character's perspective, but despite these narrative shortcomings, the movie we did get is well worth watching.

Ben Affleck as the main character Nick made for a relate-able and sympathetic main character as you begin to feel for and suspect him as he works through the situation he has found himself in. For me the person who stands out most in this film is Rosamund Pike for reason i can't give without spoiling everything, but you'll have to trust me when i say that she was brilliant. The story itself was well thought out, well written and well paced making the 2hr 20mins run time entertaining and enjoyable for the most part. The reason i haven't given this film a 10 is because of the ending. Again without revealing anything i can't give specifics but there are a few things that don't add up and the reaction that the policewoman gives to the out come seems to be there just so the director could get the ending he wanted. That being said i would definitely watch the movie again for the suspense and brilliant writing in this film and if you are a fan of David Fincher's other work, then this film is a must see for you. 2. A strong story that critiques the media circus around missing person cases. Look out for the satirising of Oprah's interviews with controversial people, say Lance Armstrong.

Con: 1. At two-and-a-half hours long, the film could have been sped up and shortened by about 15 min.

If this flick was 90 minutes long it would have benefited greatly from the unnecessary elongated drag out.

Other than the last 45 minutes this flick was awesome. If only they shaved minimum 30 minutes off running time and tied things up swifter we could have enjoyed a potential modern masterpiece.

Not aware of the underlying story going into the film- the dense thematic nature of this picture rewarded me quite succinctly. Affleck holds his own and the extraordinary Pike stands out as one of the year's most persuasive, haunting, provocative, and masterful performances. The characters perpetually evolve and morph before our eyes and perceptions (which, ultimately, becomes the prevailing theme the film succeeds to get at with a particular eye towards the "shock value" ideology of a 21st century electronic media). The premises of overwrought suspenseful machinery coupled with perspective flashbacks and, above all, a sardonic sense of humility within very clever and with great wit and verve human dialogue. Notwithstanding a few plot holes near the end- the film stands out in its gorgeous (Hitchcock gothic) cinematography, adroit acting, and compendious execution of deep subject matter (namely, marital and communal knowledge; the epistemology of identity of the self and the other; irrationality and truth). And this is not a compliment to my prediction skills.
On the upside, this might be the only problem I can find with it.
From the start I got that typical "fiction" movie feel, and I get used to it fast. Then it was all about what will happen and not about how believable the events are (like a crime fiction should be - so that's ok).

If you’re planning on seeing David Fincher’s adaptation of Gone Girl for a date night movie, The Best of Me may be a more appropriate choice. Gone Girl captivates audiences while simultaneously making them question just who the person sitting next to them really is.

Gillian Flynn’s thriller novel, Gone Girl hit the big screens October 3 with a recognizable cast.

Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, a man under suspicion when his wife disappears on the morning of their anniversary. Audiences follow Affleck throughout the beginning of the film, trying to pin him as a mourning husband or a murderous one.

Similar to many of his other roles, Affleck plays the Boston-boy jock or your typical guy’s guy. Affleck puts on a great performance, being able to make audiences love and hate Nick Dunne in all of Gone Girl’s mysterious confusion.

Affleck’s on screen wife, Amy Dunne, played by Rosamund Pike, makes an appearance midway through the movie adding relief to a slow start. While the movie lives up to its thriller genre expectation, Gone Girl drags on a bit in the beginning only to gain a solid momentum more than halfway through.

Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry’s appearances midway through add to this newfound energy lacking in the beginning.

Harris’s character comes just in time to add chaos as Amy Dunne’s pathetic highschool lover. Perry swoops in as a high profile defense lawyer for accused husbands, adding comical relief in a usually dark movie. Both Harris and Perry freshen up Gone Girl through its mid movie slump.

While the bulk of Gone Girl is focused on what happened to Amy Dunne, it also highlights other subthemes such as how media portrays missing people and the suspects involved. The similarities between Gone Girl’s talk show personnel, Ellen Abbott, and Nancy Grace are all too alike to be coincidental, adding an inside joke to anyone who has watched Nancy Grace.

Gone Girl is worthwhile movie to see if you have two and a half hours to spare. This thriller leaves the audience with answers yet still hangs titillating questions over their head while they walk out of the theatre, eager to discuss what was just seen.

As the film slowly unfolds it is clear to see an unhappy marriage is at the root of Amy Dunne’s disappearance.

Gone Girl spins the thriller genre, walking audiences through slanted media and the foggy truth all the while not knowing who to trust, even the main character.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An amazing adaptation of a complex book, in which Fincher manages to present the facts and characters quite well. The way he starts and finishes the film is a perfect cycle to the story of a woman who disappears and the more we watch the more we learn about her and who she really is. Pike is extraordinary. She's so good that you might love Amy, even if she's not a very good girl as Amazing Amy is. The way she plays this character will eventually please you and make you like her. Affleck is fine but he completely vanishes because Pike steals the show. Besides, his performance never convinced me that Nick Dunne was capable of killing Amy so since the beginning I thought they were either planning something together or Amy was the responsable for everything that happens. Harris role is not very well adapted too but as a whole Fincher did a stunning piece of work, along with Fynn. Expand

Early every autumn, there's one excellent studio movie released - a way to kick off the Oscar race and remind adult viewers that it's still possible to find intelligent, compelling movies in theaters. In 2014, that film is Gone Girl, GillianEarly every autumn, there's one excellent studio movie released - a way to kick off the Oscar race and remind adult viewers that it's still possible to find intelligent, compelling movies in theaters. In 2014, that film is Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn's adaptation of her own best-selling novel brought to the screen under the capable guidance of A-list director David Fincher. Fincher, who's no stranger to dark material (Seven and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo being examples), understands how to get the most out of Gone Girl and the result is 145 minutes of riveting drama and surprises. And, although the movie doesn't represent a page-by-page recreation of the book, it captures key aspects including multiple (sometimes unreliable) narrative perspectives, commentary on what "guilt" and "popularity" mean in today's media-saturated culture, and (of course) a Hitchcock-tilted storyline seeded with twists and turns.

This review will steer as clear as possible from spoilers but, if you haven't read the novel, you may want to stop here. The more fresh the experience, the better. Even a stripped-down synopsis of the premise could inadvertently give away things the uninitiated viewer might prefer to discover on his or her own. (Those who are familiar with the book are safe because, although there are some changes, the overall arc tracks closely to that of the novel, which is what one would expect when the author is also the screenwriter.)

If there's an overriding theme in Gone Girl, it's one of manipulation. Characters manipulate other characters. The media manipulates how the public thinks and lawyers and victims manipulate the media. Fincher isn't telling us anything new but he's reminding us how little concepts like "guilt" and "innocence" mean in the court of public opinion when the facts are twisted, handled, and withheld to make the story more compelling.

It can be difficult for any film to get two key aspects of Gone Girl right: unreliable narration and multiple perspectives. One need look no further than The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby to understand how a director's intentions aren't always conveyed. With Gone Girl, however, Fincher succeeds against all odds. By the time the end credits roll, we have a clear picture of what did (and didn't) transpire.

By intention, Gone Girl feels like two different movies grafted together. The first half is more cerebral and closer to a police procedural. Nick jokingly refers to an episode of Law & Order and there's some truth to the comparison, although the movie is crafted at a higher level than the write-by-numbers standards of a weekly TV series. The Basic Instinct similarities are amplified during the second half which features a wealth of lurid material. There are some minor pacing issues toward the very end when the movie perhaps overstays its welcome by a few minutes.

Even the best thrillers often follow predictable trajectories regardless of how many narrative switchbacks and red herrings they employ. Although some of what happens in Gone Girl is expected, the progression of the storyline is at times so inventive that it doesn't matter whether all the traditional surprises work. Fincher and Flynn recognize they're not going to be able to shock viewers with every twist so they allow us to guess some things in order to keep others hidden. Gone Girl is a rare movie: a delicious thriller that provides plenty of titillation and gruesome pleasure while offering a dollop of social commentary. It's smart, twisted, bloody, and almost guaranteed to satisfy anyone with a penchant for the macabre.

Watching the story unravel as the 1st half of the film points towards the obvious before the second half rips the mat from under you. Ben Affleck isn't so bad as the grubby ,mediocre but framed husband. He is subtle in this role ,conveying a lot with just a his detached face. This is a really enjoyable psychological thriller. For me, a great film that I recommend, especially if you've seen anything by this director and like his mystery flair. Expand

Despite its extraordinary length, i.e. almost 2 and ¾ hours, the film manages to hold the audience’s intetest. Unfortnately, and notwithstanding good acting by Mr. Affleck and Ms. Pike, there are glaring flaws in the scrip that are never explained or accounted for and, in most instances, simply don’t make sense. To elaborate further would give away the plot and that is someithing I prefer not to do. Suffice it to say that the film, after it ends, leaves open many unanswered questions and fails to resolve blatant inconsistencies. I give the movie a 7 noting tha the film could have been more enjoyable to watch if there had been less things so difficult to reconcile and understand. Expand

This is a crime mystery drama.

But it is more than that. It is an attempt to look at problems that many married couples have: financial problems, loss of work, infidelity, unhappiness.

As a drama it does not really cut it but as a mystery the movie gets more interesting as it goes on. First, we see a line of events though HIS eyes. Then we see HER version of the same events. They are so dramatically different as two sides of the same coin.

I was not very happy with the lead performances.
On the other hand, supporting cast was excellent, and so was cinematography. A healthy doze of satire definitely makes watching the movie more enjoyable.

Overall for the entertaining value and the style I give it 7 out of 10.

Personally I found the first half of the movie intriguing in the way it gradually begins to cast doubts on Nick innocence and keeps the audience guessing as to what actually happened. After the “reveal” takes place however Gone Girl did start to run out of steam a little and I found my interest starting to wane as it reached its climax. Worth watching but this could easily have been 20-30 minutes shorter than its two and a half hour running time.

As Amy Dunne in “Gone Girl” Rosamund Pike joins the ranks of Sharon Stone in “Basic Instinct” and Glenn Close in “Fatal Attraction” and to say more would give away the last hour and twenty-five minutes of the film.

The film is mostly a ‘He said-She said’ narrative of a possible kidnapping and/or murder, starting with Amy and Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) returning home, after both losing their jobs in New York City, to North Carthage, not far from St. Louis, to take care of his mother dying of cancer and his father drifting into Alzheimer’s. Amy’s parents, psychologists, (David Clennon and Lisa Banes), have become wealthy writing books about a child, Amazing Amy, who was always just a bit better than their real daughter. We see brief scenes of Amy and Nick meeting and falling in love.

Within a few minutes we see Nick coming home to an empty home leased by the couple with money from her trust fund from the books, their cat outside, a table upended, the glass top smashed and Amy missing. It isn’t long before evidence points toward Nick as the murderer of his golden wife Amy, his being pursued by detectives Rhonda Boney (Kim Dickens) and Jim Gilpin (Patrick Fuhgit), his twin sister Margo, (Carrie Coon) supporting him 100% while a sensation seeking TV cable reporter/host, played by Missy Pyle, slowly turns the public against Nick. Eventually Margo makes Nick hire news making lawyer, Tanner Bolt, (Tyler Perry). Along the way we meet Desi Collings (Neil Patrick Harris), Amy’s boyfriend, so he thinks, in high school, Carrie Wilson as Noelle Hawthorne, a neighbor of Nick and Amy’s, Emily Ratajkowski as Andie Hardy, a student in the one college class Nick teaches, plus Boyd Holbrook and Lola Kirke, as Jeff and Greta, plus a cameo by Sela Ward as another cable TV host.

With the exception of Neil Patrick Harris in a wasted, undefined role, and the roles of Boyd Holbrook and Lola Kirke, though acted strongly, could have been cut without taking anything away from the story except making it shorter, the acting by the cast is of the first order with Ben Affleck at his best while Rosamund Pike is definitely going to be up for most of the acting awards.

The screenplay by Gillian Flynn, based on her best selling novel, and the direction by David Fincher, serve the film well to hold the audiences attention as all the production values do.. They have made it one of those movies that will make people who haven’t read the book to do just that to see what, if anything, they have missed.

Gone Girl has more focus on the suspect of the crime and its reaction of all the criticism he or she gets from relatives, media and people. It’s truly something unique and fascinating about it, and I really enjoy watching it.

It surpassed my expectations and it really is a great movie. I never felt bored at all and I was constantly focused on the movie. One of the main aspects that I really love about Gone Girl is that the structure is nonlinear, it keeps jumping back and forward in time and it gives the movie tempo and depth. It’s the same with the story. There’s much focus on the perfect relationship and what that means and what disadvantages that results into. When it comes to the actors are they are superb, especially Rosamund Pike as Amy Dunne. Her character is so fake but at the same time a champion when it comes to lying. It’s her greatest performance to date. Ben Affleck plays a more innocent character and he really fits that role. The first act is amazing. It’s so mysterious and it feels much more like a crime movie. But the second act lost all that, which I don’t like at all.

This is a highly exciting and mysterious movie.

Gone Girl gets a 7.5/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It plays with the viewer. The film shows a polarity inside a couple, which is surrounded by the society's point of view in front of the situation they are able to see; thing that maintains intrigue inside the film and keeps the viewer in a constant sense of "What will happen?". The problem arises in the movie ending, leaving all the situation in "Is this all of it?". It is a loose end that is constant across the movie but highlighted in the final part; not much problem but crucial at the moment of realizing that the story has more potential than the one exposed. It's a faithful and expertly paced rendition, in-keeping with that book's uniquely nonlinear style, unreliable narration and clever use of red herrings, even if it is perhaps too cerebral for its own good and somewhat overpraised and underwhelming given the hyperbole. Nonetheless, Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck are perfectly cast - this is a breakout role for Pike and a career-best performance by Affleck. Neil Patrick Harris, on the other hand, was miscast and his character doesn't have the necessary development in the film as he does in the book. Likewise, Tyler Perry is underused. But this still another worthy entry to David Fincher's repertoire which includes similarly good adaptations of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "Fight Club". It's certainly a must-see for fans of the book. Expand

Ben Affleck stars as the husband, Nick, whose wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) has ‘disappeared’. The general public and most of the police think she is probably dead and that he has killed her. However, we (the audience) learn almost immediately that she has engineered her own disappearance. I’m not giving anything away by telling you that. The movie is about why she has left and resolving that situation.
Tension comes from the fact that we know Nick didn’t do it, but don’t really understand why he doesn’t seem to care all that much that his wife is missing. Nick’s public appeal for his wife’s return lacks any emotion or sincerity and everyone notices. Missy Pyle plays a TV commentator, who is a dead ringer for real life commentator Nancy Grace, and has a field day trying Nick’s case in the court of public opinion. Soon everyone hates Nick. One of his neighbors believes she has compelling evidence of Nick’s guilt and relentlessly tries to volunteer her information to the police. Unsatisfied with their uptake, she feels compelled to confront Nick with her ‘knowledge’ in a very public setting. Strangers emerge on the scene, like parasitic larva, seeking a vicarious thrill. Women show up to have their selfie taken with Nick. Hordes of people begin to patronize the quiet small town bar owned by Nick and Amy. Still, it’s hard to feel any sympathy for them. The more we learn about Nick and Amy the more there is to dislike about both of them.
Recently, there have been a lot of movies about dismal and depressing dystopian societies set in the relatively near future (such as Hunger Games, Divergent, and Her). What I found interesting about this movie is that it provides a window from which to view the dystopian elements of our present society as well as some of the more disturbing elements of our individual personas that could lead us down the path toward that sort of unpleasant future.
There are only three normal people in the whole movie: Nick’s twin sister Margo (Carrie Coon), police detective Rhonda Boney (Kim Dickens) and high-profile, celebrity defense attorney Tanner Bolt (Tyler Perry). The most depressing part of the movie comes when Margo and Boney ultimately recognize that they are completely impotent in affecting behaviors or outcomes. Bolt seems to have come to this same conclusion sometime in the past, but sees it all a game. The most memorable line in the movie is given by Bolt when, with a chuckle, he tells Nick that, “You two are the most f**ked up people I’ve ever met.”
Around the two hour mark, the movie has a “Carrie” moment, where Amy returns home drenched in blood. It was shortly at this point where I thought Gillian Flynn’s story started losing all believability (and I started losing interest) as Nick’s character undergoes a total transformation (from complete jerk to total wimp) and the public gets fooled by Amy for a second time.
My final conclusion: At 2½ hours, this movie is just too darn long.

Even when the cards are on the table it's not easy to see where the story will take you. Fincher masterfully brings the threads of the tale to tension 15 minutes in and holds that tension throughout the 2 and a half hour movie, rarely letting up or giving reprieve.

The performances of all involved are more than competent. The actors here are all more than capable of holding the suspense and adding their nuances. Nothing stand out here, no one should be getting any best actor/actress nominations, but they carry the movie well and keep outrageous characters mostly believable.

I say mostly because some turns are a bit difficult to stomach. Some character motivations and actions seem out of place, and there are a few fairly large plot holes that aren't explained, and presumably the viewer is just supposed to assume to chalk these up the "Well it's a movie, maybe they did this or this." I personally don't mind making these leaps sometimes. They make the movie less impressive, but don't completely ruin the experience, though I'm surprised they don't ruin it for more people.

There's also little substance here worth taking away. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, though a lot of the hype seemed to dress this movie up in thinking man's clothes, holding the promise for some unmasking of life in some degree, or at least contemplation of it. However once the movie stripped to its core it was revealed to be just another suspense thriller. Certainly carefully crafted with unique and intriguing contours, and it performs its function of instilling doubt and unease throughout. But that is pretty much all that it's good for.

This movie has many unexpected twists, and you can never predict what is going to happen, so it keeps surprising you every time, and it keeps you attached to the screen paying attention. It has some terrific acting (mainly by Rosamund Pike), and it's very well directed and written. I also really liked how this movie criticised media, showing how they get into real stories and change them just for getting more rating. I didn't like, though, Neil Patrick Harris in the movie. He is an excellent comedian, but he just wasn't the right person for the role. Another thing I didn't like about this film, but is something very important, is how "cold" and "soulless" it can sometimes get to be.
But anyway, don't miss Gone Girl, for sure.
