It really gives a great overview of someone under media scrutiny and how the media can shift the public's view on a certain issue or person. It's dark, thrilling, suspenseful, and highly entertaining. Great work from Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike (who deserves some type of recognition for her role), to boot, it was nice seeing Tyler Perry not in a wig and grandma clothing for once. Expand

Gone Girl has more focus on the suspect of the crime and its reaction of all the criticism he or she gets from relatives, media and people. It’s truly something unique and fascinating about it, and I really enjoy watching it.

It surpassed my expectations and it really is a great movie. I never felt bored at all and I was constantly focused on the movie. One of the main aspects that I really love about Gone Girl is that the structure is nonlinear, it keeps jumping back and forward in time and it gives the movie tempo and depth. It’s the same with the story. There’s much focus on the perfect relationship and what that means and what disadvantages that results into. When it comes to the actors are they are superb, especially Rosamund Pike as Amy Dunne. Her character is so fake but at the same time a champion when it comes to lying. It’s her greatest performance to date. Ben Affleck plays a more innocent character and he really fits that role. The first act is amazing. It’s so mysterious and it feels much more like a crime movie. But the second act lost all that, which I don’t like at all.

This is a highly exciting and mysterious movie.

Gone Girl gets a 7.5/10.

The chemistry of Affleck and Pike is a must watch, and really keeps the film going, although I wouldn't sell the remaining cast so short. Pike is the main triumph, and Affleck, I hate to admit, falls not very far from blatantly wooden. Otherwise of a different male protagonist casting choice, the film succeeds in what it is; a no nonsense mystery thriller. Expand

Without giving away any spoilers, I think we've come across the best cinematic villain since Hannibal Lecter, and the best shower scene since Psycho. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It plays with the viewer. The film shows a polarity inside a couple, which is surrounded by the society's point of view in front of the situation they are able to see; thing that maintains intrigue inside the film and keeps the viewer in a constant sense of "What will happen?". The problem arises in the movie ending, leaving all the situation in "Is this all of it?". It is a loose end that is constant across the movie but highlighted in the final part; not much problem but crucial at the moment of realizing that the story has more potential than the one exposed. It's a faithful and expertly paced rendition, in-keeping with that book's uniquely nonlinear style, unreliable narration and clever use of red herrings, even if it is perhaps too cerebral for its own good and somewhat overpraised and underwhelming given the hyperbole. Nonetheless, Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck are perfectly cast - this is a breakout role for Pike and a career-best performance by Affleck. Neil Patrick Harris, on the other hand, was miscast and his character doesn't have the necessary development in the film as he does in the book. Likewise, Tyler Perry is underused. But this still another worthy entry to David Fincher's repertoire which includes similarly good adaptations of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "Fight Club". It's certainly a must-see for fans of the book. Expand

A thoroughly entertaining and thoughtful film. Twisted, enough so to make your stomach turn a few times, and inventive, but also timely.

There are dramatic conceits to be sure, but anyone who thinks that a woman can't be this crazy hasn't been following the news. Far from being misogynistic, if anything it's hard on men, portraying Nick as a loser who can't control his sex drive and the rest of the movie's men as being dupes and fools. The women, conversely, range from the titular Machiavellian **** from Hell to Nick's loyal twin sister, the one genuinely competent police officer, the predatory ratings-driven talk show host, the innocent coed, and yes, a variety of dupes and fools as well. If any film has attacked gender politics more smartly and more fairly, I've not seen it.

And it makes for a thrilling ride. An audience desensitized to violence will likely be upset by some of the scenes. Piercing cultural critiques and sarcastically written laugh lines alternate with disturbing plot twists. And how often can you say "man, Tyler Perry was perfect in that role"? I wish they had held the main plot twist a bit longer, and, like the book, alternated more into the titular character's perspective, but despite these narrative shortcomings, the movie we did get is well worth watching.

It's steamy, it's sexy, gory and psychotic, all mashed together with mixed emotions. We can all agree that the 'overrated' director David Fincher does that perfectly in his films, in this film fits the bill perfectly. Best-selling author Gillian Flynn's debut as a screenwriter is just chilling and effected craft. We have Ben Affleck playing a desperate dick husband, he tries to make the media and everyone us believe that he did not kill his wife (or had anything else to do with the disappearance). Rosamund Pike is even slightly better than Affleck's character. Kim Dickens character was really amusing as the detective. Carrie Coon's character "Margo" was had a good comedic presence to the screen, but at times the stuff she says sometimes can be at the wrong time so that's what i guess. I am not sure if this film is gonna impact Perry's career, but it'll get the guy a better role. Neil Patrick Harris' character is awkward and lovely at times. But the ending is stupid!

Gone Girl is easily one of the best movies of 2014.

The entire main cast in this movie were excellent in this movie. Some of my favorite performances were from Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Carrie Coon and Kim Dickens but the real stars of the show were Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. Ben Affleck’s and Rosamund Pike’s performances as Nick and Amy are top-notch in this movie. They played their roles as if they were born to play their roles. It makes sense for Ben Affleck since the movie covers how his character Nick had this media hysteria about him and Ben Affleck experienced this similarly in real life during his relationship with Jennifer Lopez. They also had a great chemistry together and their Oscar performances are Oscar worthy without being too obvious.

The plot was intriguing and edge of the seat from start to finish. They made some changes from the source material in this movie but this won’t bother the fans of the book. I enjoyed the scenes that were outside both Nick and Amy’s point of view and they really moved the plot of the movie.

I am impressed how Gillian Flynn was able to translate her own book to the big screen in her screenplay. She did an impressive job as a first time screenwriter.

David Fincher’s direction is marvelous to watch. The cinematography makes this movie pleasing to see with its yellow coloring. The editing makes this movie thrilling and intriguing. And the eerie score in this movie fits the entire movie’s tone and it enhances the movie experience.

Gone Girl is an suspenseful and entertaining movie thanks to its top-notch cast performance, intriguing plot, impressive screenplay from Gillian Flynn, David Fincher’s marvelous direction, pleasing cinematography and an eerie score that fits the entire movie.

If this flick was 90 minutes long it would have benefited greatly from the unnecessary elongated drag out.

Other than the last 45 minutes this flick was awesome. If only they shaved minimum 30 minutes off running time and tied things up swifter we could have enjoyed a potential modern masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gone Girl is a phenomenal psychological suspense thriller reminiscent of a lost Hitchcockian style. Gillian Flynn perfectly adapts her novel to the silver screen with a modern, paranoia-inducing story that David Fincher directs exquisitely. The cinematography and editing help accent the dark tone of the film coupled with the eerie and instantly iconic score.

The greatest part of the film, which is difficult to achieve with its unbelievable script, is the acting by Rosamund Pike. With her best performance to date she brings us Amy Dunne, an empathetic, intelligent and borderline sociopathic character that makes you both sob for her yet cringe at her actions. Such a wonderfully dynamic character.

There was nothing much that I could complain about this film although I find that a general audience of this century may find the narrative to drag a bit as little to no action happens through the second act of the film. However, that does not detract from the fact that Gone Girl is a brilliantly made film that deserves acknowledgement and should be a strong contender during Awards Season.

Sociopath.Manipulation.Improvisation.Truth.Lies.Dark.Emotions.Thriller.Words.Stories.Gillian Flynn.David Fincher.Brilliant

The Score by Atticus Toss and Trent Reznor is so intelligent for a thriller genre.

“ David [Fincher] was at the chiropractor and heard this music that was inauthentically trying to make him feel OK, and that became a perfect metaphor for this film … The challenge was, simply, what is the musical equivalent of the same sort of façade of comfort and a feeling of insincerity that that music represented? [My primary aim was] to instill doubt [and] remind you that things aren’t always what they seem to be. ”

Rosamund Pike gave one of her best performances till date reminding me of Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct )

Its a masterpiece for sure but not the best of the year.
I'm actually waiting for Goofs(mistakes) in the movie! (Is there any?)

I'll just quote this

If you’re planning on seeing David Fincher’s adaptation of Gone Girl for a date night movie, The Best of Me may be a more appropriate choice. Gone Girl captivates audiences while simultaneously making them question just who the person sitting next to them really is.

Gillian Flynn’s thriller novel, Gone Girl hit the big screens October 3 with a recognizable cast.

Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, a man under suspicion when his wife disappears on the morning of their anniversary. Audiences follow Affleck throughout the beginning of the film, trying to pin him as a mourning husband or a murderous one.

Similar to many of his other roles, Affleck plays the Boston-boy jock or your typical guy’s guy. Affleck puts on a great performance, being able to make audiences love and hate Nick Dunne in all of Gone Girl’s mysterious confusion.

Affleck’s on screen wife, Amy Dunne, played by Rosamund Pike, makes an appearance midway through the movie adding relief to a slow start. While the movie lives up to its thriller genre expectation, Gone Girl drags on a bit in the beginning only to gain a solid momentum more than halfway through.

Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry’s appearances midway through add to this newfound energy lacking in the beginning.

Harris’s character comes just in time to add chaos as Amy Dunne’s pathetic highschool lover. Perry swoops in as a high profile defense lawyer for accused husbands, adding comical relief in a usually dark movie. Both Harris and Perry freshen up Gone Girl through its mid movie slump.

While the bulk of Gone Girl is focused on what happened to Amy Dunne, it also highlights other subthemes such as how media portrays missing people and the suspects involved. The similarities between Gone Girl’s talk show personnel, Ellen Abbott, and Nancy Grace are all too alike to be coincidental, adding an inside joke to anyone who has watched Nancy Grace.

Gone Girl is worthwhile movie to see if you have two and a half hours to spare. This thriller leaves the audience with answers yet still hangs titillating questions over their head while they walk out of the theatre, eager to discuss what was just seen.

As the film slowly unfolds it is clear to see an unhappy marriage is at the root of Amy Dunne’s disappearance.

Gone Girl spins the thriller genre, walking audiences through slanted media and the foggy truth all the while not knowing who to trust, even the main character.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An amazing adaptation of a complex book, in which Fincher manages to present the facts and characters quite well. The way he starts and finishes the film is a perfect cycle to the story of a woman who disappears and the more we watch the more we learn about her and who she really is. Pike is extraordinary. She's so good that you might love Amy, even if she's not a very good girl as Amazing Amy is. The way she plays this character will eventually please you and make you like her. Affleck is fine but he completely vanishes because Pike steals the show. Besides, his performance never convinced me that Nick Dunne was capable of killing Amy so since the beginning I thought they were either planning something together or Amy was the responsable for everything that happens. Harris role is not very well adapted too but as a whole Fincher did a stunning piece of work, along with Fynn. Expand

Expand

An enjoyable movie, and if you start thinking of all the possibilities of all the answers to the death story from the beginning.. Gone Girl had a predictable but yet an enjoyable, dark, and nonetheless, twisted story line.

The real thing that takes the prize in this movie is Rosamund Pike's acting. Should get a Best Actress nominee, and maybe even bring the oscar home. maybe.

solid 8.5/10.

This movie has many unexpected twists, and you can never predict what is going to happen, so it keeps surprising you every time, and it keeps you attached to the screen paying attention. It has some terrific acting (mainly by Rosamund Pike), and it's very well directed and written. I also really liked how this movie criticised media, showing how they get into real stories and change them just for getting more rating. I didn't like, though, Neil Patrick Harris in the movie. He is an excellent comedian, but he just wasn't the right person for the role. Another thing I didn't like about this film, but is something very important, is how "cold" and "soulless" it can sometimes get to be.
But anyway, don't miss Gone Girl, for sure.

Personally I found the first half of the movie intriguing in the way it gradually begins to cast doubts on Nick innocence and keeps the audience guessing as to what actually happened. After the “reveal” takes place however Gone Girl did start to run out of steam a little and I found my interest starting to wane as it reached its climax. Worth watching but this could easily have been 20-30 minutes shorter than its two and a half hour running time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw Gone Girl when I was home for a week last Halloween, a time during which I was watching a combination of old James Bond films and schlocky slashers like Scream (1996) and Freddy vs. Jason (2003) all films which are more cheesy than scary. During my one trip to the cinema that week, Gone Girl was the film which kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a real thriller with horrifying scenes making it almost a horror film itself.

I’m not going to spoil details of a plot which works best as a mystery, but the premise is that Midwestern everyman Nick Dunne (Ben Afflek) returns home one day (his fifth wedding anniversary no less) to find his glamorous wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) missing. The ensuing media circus then throws Nick into suspicion.

The film’s strength is its manipulation of the viewer. We follow and side with Nick initially; Ben Afflek plays him as fairly neutral, a blank slate. Maybe he’s too passive in the face of his wife’s disappearance. Is he guilty or does he simply not know how to react? He seems likeable enough, but there’s something just behind it.

During the first act the couple’s relationship is told through flashbacks, incorporating segments of Amy’s diary, and we gradually begin to side with her. These dual narrative strands are apparently from the original wildly popular novel by Gillian Flynn, who wrote the screenplay. We must be in safe hands.

David Fincher, whose last film was the English-language remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, retains something of the Nordic noir to Gone Girl. The film is full of darkness, sex and violence. Camera angles are sweeping and the scenery both bleak and beautiful. At the heart of the film is an exploration of humanity which is divisive and ambiguous.

Though a long film, it is never boring. There was a point around halfway through when some kind of resolution seems to have been reached, but the film keeps going and the pace and intensity increases. Rosamund Pike’s role increases as the story progresses and without giving too much away, her performance is powerful.

Role and image are major themes. On some level, everyone is playing a part, deliberately projecting or hiding behind a facade. Amy has been fictionalised by her writer parents in the overblown, saccharine Amazing Amy books which she has never been able to live up to. She has a place in the public eye and this is why the press descends so rapidly on the case.

As the audience struggles to understand his psyche, Nick is struggling to appease the exploitative media. He hires Tanner Bolt (Tyler Perry), a lawyer specialising in image and defending suspected husbands. Perry’s role is dramatic but played with a much needed balancing touch of humour. Of note too is Neil Patrick Harris’s rare straight role as Amy’s ex-boyfriend Desi.

The music, from serene yet ominous ambient soundscapes to throbbing electronica was composed by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and his producer Atticus Ross who have collaborated on Fincher’s last two films. In keeping with the theses of this film, they have created a score which is simultaneously soothing and unnerving.

I’ll finish by acknowledging that there are some plot holes in the decidedly complicated narrative, particularly paper trails, alibis and the possible existence of exonerating security footage. Again, I won’t go into too much detail, but at one point a detective begins to question such a hole but is quickly shot down.

Presumably these details would come to light sometime later during the inevitable long investigation. The case ends far from closed. But the film is more than just the plot, which is nevertheless engaging. As a piece of film making, the themes, music and visuals remain powerful.

Those who have read the book will be satisfied with this adaptation, as it stays almost completely true to the source material, and when it deviates from the book there is an intended purpose that elevates the movie even higher. No spoilers, but when the big secret is revealed, I like how it is revealed halfway rather than the end, because the viewer feels more connected to the story if we know what is really going on. The performances by Affleck, Pike, and even Neil Patrick Harris are all nuanced in the right way as they bring these characters to life. The movie deserves every second of its 141 minute runtime. And this is not a compliment to my prediction skills.
On the upside, this might be the only problem I can find with it.
From the start I got that typical "fiction" movie feel, and I get used to it fast. Then it was all about what will happen and not about how believable the events are (like a crime fiction should be - so that's ok).

Early every autumn, there's one excellent studio movie released - a way to kick off the Oscar race and remind adult viewers that it's still possible to find intelligent, compelling movies in theaters. In 2014, that film is Gone Girl, GillianEarly every autumn, there's one excellent studio movie released - a way to kick off the Oscar race and remind adult viewers that it's still possible to find intelligent, compelling movies in theaters. In 2014, that film is Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn's adaptation of her own best-selling novel brought to the screen under the capable guidance of A-list director David Fincher. Fincher, who's no stranger to dark material (Seven and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo being examples), understands how to get the most out of Gone Girl and the result is 145 minutes of riveting drama and surprises. And, although the movie doesn't represent a page-by-page recreation of the book, it captures key aspects including multiple (sometimes unreliable) narrative perspectives, commentary on what "guilt" and "popularity" mean in today's media-saturated culture, and (of course) a Hitchcock-tilted storyline seeded with twists and turns.

This review will steer as clear as possible from spoilers but, if you haven't read the novel, you may want to stop here. The more fresh the experience, the better. Even a stripped-down synopsis of the premise could inadvertently give away things the uninitiated viewer might prefer to discover on his or her own. (Those who are familiar with the book are safe because, although there are some changes, the overall arc tracks closely to that of the novel, which is what one would expect when the author is also the screenwriter.)

If there's an overriding theme in Gone Girl, it's one of manipulation. Characters manipulate other characters. The media manipulates how the public thinks and lawyers and victims manipulate the media. Fincher isn't telling us anything new but he's reminding us how little concepts like "guilt" and "innocence" mean in the court of public opinion when the facts are twisted, handled, and withheld to make the story more compelling.

It can be difficult for any film to get two key aspects of Gone Girl right: unreliable narration and multiple perspectives. One need look no further than The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby to understand how a director's intentions aren't always conveyed. With Gone Girl, however, Fincher succeeds against all odds. By the time the end credits roll, we have a clear picture of what did (and didn't) transpire.

By intention, Gone Girl feels like two different movies grafted together. The first half is more cerebral and closer to a police procedural. Nick jokingly refers to an episode of Law & Order and there's some truth to the comparison, although the movie is crafted at a higher level than the write-by-numbers standards of a weekly TV series. The Basic Instinct similarities are amplified during the second half which features a wealth of lurid material. There are some minor pacing issues toward the very end when the movie perhaps overstays its welcome by a few minutes.

Even the best thrillers often follow predictable trajectories regardless of how many narrative switchbacks and red herrings they employ. Although some of what happens in Gone Girl is expected, the progression of the storyline is at times so inventive that it doesn't matter whether all the traditional surprises work. Fincher and Flynn recognize they're not going to be able to shock viewers with every twist so they allow us to guess some things in order to keep others hidden. Gone Girl is a rare movie: a delicious thriller that provides plenty of titillation and gruesome pleasure while offering a dollop of social commentary. It's smart, twisted, bloody, and almost guaranteed to satisfy anyone with a penchant for the macabre.

Fincher directs with his usual superb class, giving the film great style and keeping the story alive(Gone Girl is easily one of the year's best directed films), and the whole film looks absolutely great with brooding lighting that evokes the creepy atmosphere brilliantly and Gone Girl is also a film that makes good use of digital, after seeing many directors over-using or cheapening it it was refreshing to see the technique done with taste. Trent Rezner and Atticus Ross's music score gives the film a haunting vibe and adds much to the unsettling intensity that a lot of the film(at least two-thirds worth), managing to not do it in an in-your-face manner. The use of sound mixing was interesting and came off cleverly, almost like a distant thought process. Gone Girl also has a brilliantly written and adapted script that does a great job balancing dark humour- that's not overused and is often hilarious- and suspense mystery (The Cool Girl monologue in particular is a masterpiece of script-writing, one of my favourite film monologues ever), while the story(apart from taking a bit of time to get starting) is absorbing from start to finish, rich in detail and characterisation and is filled with shocks and unpredictable twists that will be guaranteed to leave you reeling. That it is adapted from superb source material(one of the best books I've read in recent memory actually) helps it, and that it is faithful to it is commendable, a case of being faithful to the source material actually coming off wonders rather than being bogged down by being too faithful. The not-what-they-seem characters are incredibly interesting and richly developed, especially Amy who is one of the most chilling female characters of the year. And the acting is one of the high points of the film, as good as Fincher's direction and the score are it's Rosamund Pike's knockout turn as Amy in restrained- she only has to raise an eyebrow or something like that and it says a lot- but quite terrifying mode(especially in the third act) that makes the film. It will be a great surprise if she isn't at least nominated because it is easily her best performance. Ben Affleck has the other not-what-they-seem role and plays it with oozing charm and brooding intensity, while Neil Patrick Harris surprisingly excels in a very against-type role(who knew he could be sinister?) and Tyler Perry oozes charisma and is very funny. Carrie Coon is the standout in support, it's a tricky role and the moral compass of the film but Coon is touchingly likable in it. The ending does for my liking end too suddenly and the storytelling got implausible and lazy at this point, but apart from that Gone Girl was a winner and one of the best of the year. 9/10 Bethany Cox Expand

“Gone Girl” is a psychological thriller directed by David Fincher.

Honestly, I have decided to see the film just because the director is David Fincher. He has his own very distinctive style, and even if you have seen only one of his movies, you will immediately recognize Fincher's work in “Gone Girl”.

The plot is fast moving and absorbing, compels viewers to follow the chain of events. By the way, the screenplay based on a novel of the same name written by Gillian Flynn, who also wrote the script.

Turning back to the film, the day of his 5th anniversary, Nick Dunne (by Ben Affleck) returns home and finds his wife Amy (by Rosamund Pike) is missing. Gone Girl is a thrilling and emotionally jarring piece of cinema that subverts the romance and crime genres into a more modern and bleaker world. The film is also one of the first to explore the impact that “fake news” and rhetorically driven pundits have on society. While these elements are present in the book from which the film is adapted, Fincher takes them and throws them under the magnifying glass. The most remarkable thing about the movie, however, is that Tyler Perry, of noted Medea fame, gives a great performance. All players give great performances. Affleck likely giving the best of his career so far. Gone Girl is so insanely purposeful with all its elements that it feels as if the viewer is watching a real news story unfold. At times the movie is manipulative, but it does so admittingly and in a manner that is simultaneously thematically and socially driven. Fincher works excellently with crime subjects. Pieces like Se7en and Gone Girl show that he understands the genre as it currently exists and as it will exist in the future. Gone Girl starts with a steady gallop, but once it gets going it never stops until it gets right back where it started. In a way, the end is built into the beginning, but the middle gives context to the end. Expand

This is a 2.5 hour movie and sometimes these days it's difficult for me to stick with the longer movies but this never felt long. You were always curious what was going on. Let's just say it didn't quite go the way I expected but I was intrigued the whole time. The acting was great. This could for sure be considered a slow burn and I'm actually currently watching the TV show Sharp Objects by the same author and this is paced much better than that. There's a couple things I didn't particularly thing got solved or like how they went at the end but overall a great movie..

It really brings Gillian Flynns tightly drawn world to life alongside with it's personality. Rosmund os a force to be reckoned with as the sociopathic Amy who after realizing her husband's infidelity and general lack of interest causes her to do the unthinkable. Watching the story unravel as the 1st half of the film points towards the obvious before the second half rips the mat from under you. Ben Affleck isn't so bad as the grubby ,mediocre but framed husband. He is subtle in this role ,conveying a lot with just a his detached face. This is a really enjoyable psychological thriller. It all starts off innocently enough, but after a while it becomes a mystery and by the second half it was getting pretty damn interesting for me and I was very interested to see how it would end. I was really pleasantly surprised. It was building up nicely and it was unpredictable for me and I didn't expect it to turn out the way it did. An interesting and at times breathtaking piece of work. For me, a great film that I recommend, especially if you've seen anything by this director and like his mystery flair. Expand
