The film explores so much of the human condition and the brokenness of modern life. It accomplishes this journey in an affirmative narrative. The concept of the unconditional love we recive from our pets is turned on its head. Do we receive the love, or do we project the love? This is a complex comedy with more layers than a stack cake. And every bite is as sweet. It is a take (off) on the road trip motif, romantic comedy, western, and urban chick flick. Complex characters populate and offer top-notch performances. The adorable dog, referenced in the title, is not upstaging the actors. Nor a prop. This film succeeds in fleshing out a full fledged canine character central to the tale. Gone Doggy Gone masterfully serves up a plethora of homages to Hollywood classics. It manages to both poke fun and remind us of the ingrained impact of film. The careful viewer will catch subtle and delicious cultural references. Swept away in a story featuring lovable characters, superb cinematography, directing, locations and sets defying the imagination (and budget), all working to accomplish a cohesive and satisfying display of our fragile humanity. Invite this pleasing film to curl up in your lap. Expand
