The real disaster in form of the timeless-classic "GODZILLA". Beside the meh script, Gareth Edwards visualized Godzilla in the most realistic yet cinematic EPIC like no other ever achieved!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I mean I've seen worse movies in my lifetime. The plot was actually quite decent with the whole thing about the MUTOs wanting to lay their eggs and the US Military trying to stop that because it could kill millions of innocent civilians and the human characters were alright espeially for a movie where the main attraction is the Titans. But the thing I liked about it the most was the atmosphere and tone with it feeling way darker than most other Godilla movies in existance, that and you could actually feel about how dangerous these monsters would be if they were real because of how the camera angles were done making you feel like you're their with the characters experiencing everything they are, the ending also felt quite bitter sweet because they did kill the MUTO and destroyed the eggs so that way there isn't hundreds of them to deal with in a few years but they also destroyed most of San Francisco while doing so. Very, very slow burn. But the way Edwards frames the movie, truly gives jaw dropping scope to the size of Godzilla. Excellent pay off in the final act.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first entry in WarnerBros MonsterVerse, Godzilla is a surprisingly engaging and emotion-filled movie with a story that allows it to really nicely transcend the big monster fighting action that is core to the premise of a movie with the name Godzilla. The script and directing are better than I would’ve expected and allow this movie spend a lot of time focused on the story, relationships between characters and building tension. That last point is one of the best and most effective things about this movie: it doesn’t get to the action right away and rather saves it for when it’s most appropriate to keep viewers invested for the full runtime, which adds a lot of depth to the movie and gives the characters themselves moments to shine. It also allows for the focus of the movie to not be big monster-centric and gives us a more down to Earth and relatable perspective that I really appreciate. The way this movie progresses is perfectly realistic and exactly the way a situation like it would go in the real world, allowing it to flow really well. It’s also very similar to the way that a natural disaster movie would go, giving an interesting genre comparison. This brings me to the one flaw I see in this movie, which is that it’s very predictable and there are really no surprises or twists, at least for the viewers. The characters themselves have some curveballs thrown at them. Godzilla ends up being a more interesting character than I expected, but nothing really caught me off guard as being too unexpected. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since it means the movie doesn’t get too complex and try to do anything fancy, and overcomplications often hurt the flow of a film. I could sit down right now and watch this movie and be entertained by it, a luxury I don’t have with so many other movies. Godzilla has a lot of rewatch value and will still be fun and engaging on multiple viewings. The film is smarter than you might think on many occasions and shows that the filmmakers wanted to take the character and franchise in a whole new direction and give everybody a breath of fresh air, and they succeed in doing both really well. As I mentioned previously, the script and directing are great and show that the filmmakers knew what they were doing and that you really can give new energy to a franchise. Overall, Godzilla is a really fun and engaging movie to watch and was a strong start to the MonsterVerse and I’d strongly recommend it to fans of the kaiju genre. Expand

He showed me the trailer of Godzilla: King of the Monsters when it first came. I was so much filled with awe, I decided to watch all the movies in Monsterverse. This was the first one, and the very reason why I got interested in this cinematic universe. I did watch a couple of other Godzilla movies and saw how this is different, since this movie has so many negative reviews compared to them. But turns out this is still good.
The thing which struck me about this movie which makes it different from other kaiju movies is what made me like it so much. This movie shows Godzilla from the humans' eye view. Because of this it shows the intensity of Godzilla's movement. You can actually feel his weight every time he walks, runs, growls or uses his atomic breath. Every time he moves dust falls out of his body, which is probably how insects also see us. My favourite scene was the one where some people are in a casino and it is being shown on TV that Godzilla is coming. Suddenly the power goes off and then the roof comes off.
The two MUTOs are also way better monsters than the Skullcrawlers or the ones from King of the Monsters. Unlike them, here we get to see exactly what their motivation is and what is at stakes here. They would lay their eggs and populate earth, destroying all the small life. Unlike King Ghidorah or Rodan, there are both male and female MUTOs who can lay millions of eggs which will make their work spread for centuries. This is more in likes to Skullcrawlers except it would be the whole world instead of one island.
People here are complaining about how much screen time is given to talking and army instead of the monsters. But this isn't a problem actually. To show such a realistic kaiju movie we would require a boat load of money. The thing is, the showing should not be inconsistent, something which ruined King of the Monsters. When the monster fight is shown, it's shown. It does not cut back to the humans until the fight is finally over. After that Godzilla just wakes up and walks into the sea.
Godzilla is a fresh take on something we have seen many times before, except with a different point of view. It's nice to see monsters from a human's eyes. It's like all the fantasies I dreamt of as a kid with extinct animals. I really wish this franchise becomes super successful in the future.

A perfect mix of gritty & fantastical. Realistic & God-Like. Gareth Edward's 2014 Godzilla Film does what it needs to, capture audiences with it's stunning CGI work of the monsters on screen and give the human characters enough emotion and motivation they need to make them enjoyable to watch as their own plot lines play out and intertwine with the monsters.

The biggest let down of this movie is the screen time the title character himself gets. With a shockingly low 10 Minutes of screen time, you leave wanting more of the giant kaiju, wishing he had more time to shine. The only upside to this is that the movie's pacing masks the disappointing screen time, having a "Jaws-Like" effect of hiding the monster.

With all this said, the climactic final battle is an insanely rewarding fight to watch play out, and makes you feel like you got what you wanted out of this film. The proper Hollywood rendition of Godzilla.

Perhaps to be expected from a first outing, G14 only gingerly dips its toes into the water and plays everything thoroughly, almost laughably safe. Little of the series' Japanese and sci-fi/fantasy roots are allowed to show, replaced instead with all the typical tropes and trappings of a typical Hollywood blockbuster. A common complaint is that the titular kaiju doesn't show up enough, but in the movie's defense this is not true- Godzilla has no less screentime than in the average Japanese feature and as a character is treated with greater fanfare and respect than literally anything else in the film. The real problem is that the human protagonist (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is painfully ill-equipped to carry this story. His character is wooden and boring at best, showing almost no emotion whatsoever, and his supposedly "heroic" actions endanger the lives of his loved ones and brothers in arms so often it's hard to think of him as anything but delusional. Compounding the problem is that the film's handling of the monsters seems just as confused as the hero: the new MUTO beasts are portrayed as dangerous but not evil, acting more like misplaced animals than villains, and are even given some tender moments to demonstrate their emotional range and capacity for love... yet in the end Godzilla and the human hero inexplicably treat them with excessive, gory malice, as if the audience were meant to hate them all along and cheer at their demise. Regardless of what you feel towards them, none of the three monster characters are given much chance to leave an impression visually. The film seems outright hesitant to show them for any longer than a few seconds at a time, frequently cutting away to random civilians or Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character just as the action starts to pick up. When they do get the screen they're usually shrouded in thick smoke and darkness, probably why so many movie-goers felt they hardly saw Godzilla despite the number of scenes he was in. The end result is a bleak, generic, and surprisingly boring film. Expand

In anticipation of Godzilla vs Kong, I've decided to rewatch all the previous Monsterverse movies. I've watched this when it first came out in Cinemas and I came out slightly disappointed. Now that I decided to finally rewatch it after 7In anticipation of Godzilla vs Kong, I've decided to rewatch all the previous Monsterverse movies. I've watched this when it first came out in Cinemas and I came out slightly disappointed. Now that I decided to finally rewatch it after 7 years, I wonder if my opinions will change or not? The premise is "Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a Navy bomb expert, has just reunited with his family in San Francisco when he is forced to go to Japan to help his estranged father, Joe (Bryan Cranston). Soon, both men are swept up in an escalating crisis when Godzilla, King of the Monsters, arises from the sea to combat malevolent adversaries that threaten the survival of humanity. The creatures leave colossal destruction in their wake, as they make their way toward their final battleground: San Francisco". So is it actually better than I thought or is still as disappointing as I remember it?

Firstly, I actually really like the tone of this movie. After watching all the new Monsterverse movies and now going back, I think the serious and grounded nature are wonderful. It shows these Titans from the perspective of humans and makes them seem more fearsome and majestic. The original Japanese Godzilla portrayed the titular character as a force of nature and Gareth Evans (the director) perfectly captures this as well. I also really like the cinematography by Seamus McGarvey. The more tame colours really work in the movies favour by really giving it a war-like and disaster style feel to the movie. Additionally, there are some gorgeous shots in the movie and some stunning visual spectacles. The score by Alexandre Desplat is actually pretty good and at some parts such as the HALO jump is where the score really stands out. The final climax is also very thrilling to watch even though it is kind of dark though.

The biggest complaint I had with this movie is the severe lack of Godzilla. He is the titular character but is barely even in it. Heck, the villain monster, the MUTOs, appear more than him. I think what is really jarring is that when Godzilla appears they then cutaway to something else. For example, when Godzilla arrives near the airport and about to fight a MUTO but it then cutaways to some boring human characters who see it on TV. It felt quite insulting that they wouldn't show these fights and instead just telling us the conclusion from some human characters. I was screaming internally throughout the movie, "Let Them Fight". On that note, the human characters really suck. I think all the actors do a fine job although Aaron Taylor-Johnson who plays the main lead, Ford Brody, is quite lacking in a lot of personality in most of his scenes. Not entirely his fault as the character is written to be quite boring. Elle Brody (Elizabeth Olsen) is just playing the trope of wife and mother character, Dr. Ishirō Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) is a monster expert, Dr. Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins) is monster expert right-hand person. This is literally their personality and nothing else which makes all the characters very uninteresting. There is one interesting character Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) who is the father of the main lead who also lost his wife due to unusual seismic activity and is trying to determine the cause of the meltdown that killed his wife. This screams main character as there is a backstory that is making us root for him. Plus he is played phenomenally by Bryan in every scene. However, they decide to kill him 30 minutes into the movie and replace him with his boring son. What a waste of a character and there was no real reason to kill him so early.

Overall, it's an all right movie. I don't agree with a lot of the decisions made in terms of story and characters but it nails the tone, atmosphere and visuals completely. It's a good monster movie and also a good start to the "Monsterverse".

A new life for Godzilla, after years of being mistreated in the cinema.

I confess that I was never a fan of Godzilla because it always seemed unrealistic to me. The amount of bad movies with the city-destroying monster doesn't help either. So, it is no wonder that I had little expectations for this film and decided not to see it in the cinema but at home, when it was on TV.

I felt, right from the start, that the film is concerned with creating a logical story to sustain the monster. The nuclear theme is there, but now it was not created by human bombs, it existed for thousands of years, drawing power from atomic radiation, like a chargeable battery. Even so, I did not feel completely convinced, given that radiation kills and, here, human beings seem at ease with a gigantic creature that certainly emanates more radiation than fifty thousand reactors. There are more times when everything sounds false and the story reveals weaknesses, but it is better not to take these issues further if we want to give the film a chance.

The script is simple: it all starts with a tragic nuclear accident in Japan and Joe Brody's search for what really happened. His search causes him and his son, now an American military man, to stumble upon a hidden truth: that there are colossal creatures in the world, older than Humanity and mostly asleep, who can wake up and endanger our lifestyle. They are monitored by a secret international organization called Monarch, and one of its leaders, Ishiro Serizawa, places hopes on the strongest and most powerful of them - the Gojira lizard - to control all the rest. The rest of the film is a trail of destruction, with humans screaming, soldiers firing, things on fire and colossal creatures in titanic battles.

The film features a cast full of famous stars but it is not the type of film we see for the interpretive quality of the actors nor do we have the opportunity to truly care for the characters. Moreover, most of the actors have little time on the scene and little to do. This is the case of Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen and Juliette Binoche. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is weak to lead the film but works reasonably as an action figure. Ken Watanabe is the most striking actor in the entire film, functioning as a kind of "Master Yoda" who knows more than everyone else and always has a cliche of wisdom up his sleeve. Watanabe always knew how to stay above the rest of the cast and give us a good job.

Technically, the film is grandiose and justifies the millions in the budget. Bet on creating a threatening environment, with a lot happening at night or in cloudy scenarios, where we don't see everything. There are cities devastated to the ground, a lot of noise everywhere, dust and animalistic deafening roars. The sound and visual effects are to be congratulated, as well as the entire CGI and computing department. Well-made sets, good props, good sound mixing and editing work are also very evident. The soundtrack, responsibility of Alexandre Desplat, is competent but not impressive or epic, as it could be.

Of all the films I've seen involving Godzilla, this is certainly the best. But it is the best because the others were too bad or too weak to compete with a film that has more money, more sound actors and better production values. It is a film that could be better, but it is good enough to be worth it.

Only then,As the first thirty or forty minutes of Godzilla (2014) played out, I thought this was going to be a pretty good film, maybe even a really good film. Cranston is intense and the story moves right along. I was very engaged. Only then, things happen. Basically, the military takes over the film and from then on it's boom bang bam. And I am left with certain complaints:

1) Let's put the SWAT team on the roof of a hotel so they have a clear line of fire because bullets out of assault rifles are really going to have an big impact on a monster the size of a small skyscraper.

2) So, we've got these helicopters, and they're packed with machine-guns, but let's fly in real real close so the even the monster with no wings has an even chance of reaching out and knocking the helicopters out of the sky.

3) We need to keep a close eye on Godzilla as he swims across the sea, because who knows if he's a good monster or a bad monster. So let's sail our aircraft carrier like 200 yards away from Godzilla's tail, even though Godzilla might sink the carrier just by brushing against it accidentally.

4) So we've got all these giant monsters popping up and threatening to destroy civilization but for some reason one of our main characters never catches an announcement via TV, radio or cell phone, like, hey y'all, if you're in the military report to your command immediately because it's a code red ultra emergency.

5) OK, like, we tried nuking Godzilla, or something, way back when, and that didn't work, and apparently we still haven't asked the question: "How could that not work?" And despite not asking that question we're still pretty darn sure that another nuke, just bigger and badder, is almost certainly going to work. Because, I guess, just the fact that you survived a nuclear blast doesn't mean you can do it again.

6) An Abrams tank can sit on the San Francisco shoreline and shoot targets at the far end of the Golden Gate Bridge but let's run those tanks out onto the bridge so they'll get a better view of monsters standing in the water beside the bridge. Sure, the tanks might go for a swim but what are you gonna do?

7) To judge by the closing credits it appears like the entire US Department of Defense provided technical advice on the making of the film so you'd probably be justified in assuming that everything in the film concerning the military is absolutely 100% accurate and correct. Well, maybe not.

On the whole this is not a bad entry into the giant monsters attacking civilization film genre, but it could've been a lot better. I mean it's almost like they had one set of writers and directors for the Bryan Cranston part of the film, and the B Team handled the rest of the film. Or maybe the C Team. You decide.

Cardboard characters, bland action, hype filled shlock. It also started a civil war in The Godzilla fandom, that didn't end until late 2017. The only Good thing this film did was try to fill the gap between Final wars and Shin Godzilla.

A great cast squandered on a horrible script and story, all in service of obscuring the main attraction: Godzilla himself. Yes, if you like annoying characters being overacted while a monster looms in the background, you might enjoy this.

This Godzilla is just boring and way overrated. Only the CGI are correct, but otherwise nothing to save here. Useless characters, lazy writing and awful original score from Alexandre Desplat (why the hell they didn't hired David Arnold from the previous Godzilla, or at least Tyler Bates...) are the only things that I can remember. The direction was ok enough and the final battle sequence wasn't great but still effective but this is overall more a disappointment than anything other. Expand

This movie is not as good as you would want it to be unless you knew the future plans for King of the monsters. How Godzilla is never really shown fully until towards the end of the movie, but the humans did leave something else to be desired.

This movie focuses more on the people that get caught in a battle between giant monsters and the ensuing destruction. The giant monsters are hidden from view for most of the film's duration, in an effort to build up suspense. Seeing Godzilla emerge from the water and scream for the first time is awesome. My favorite scene is the soldiers parachuting through clouds while Godzilla fights the MUTOs (what a horrible codename), it's an astounding vista. Human characters and their stories are OK, but it's lame to think they can affect the battle, and the whole Monarch arc story is great in theory but badly executed. The plot is pretty straight forward, as in "Godzilla comes to kill the MUTOs and then takes his leave", but at least this movie stays faithful to the original japanese movies. It's far better than Roland Emmerich's Godzilla film from 1998. Expand

It is the titled character's performance that you are looking forward to, although the techniques are bit like Kong's.

Godzilla

Edwards packs a lunch full of power bars. Productive, nutritious and delicious is his methods and excited, keen and thrilled are our experience. The director, Gareth Edwards wraps this humongous gift for the comic book lovers and film goers of this genre, with a subtle hip and happening color, that makes this all look convincing. For a brief period, but surely believable. Unfortunately, one would think, that the first act of the film that drives us into the chaotic world through humanely emotional characters creates depth, one is wrong. What carves this piece of cake into an edible and healthier one, is Edwards's perception of these worlds. He respects both, mythological events and the modernized materialistic world.

There are too many military references and too many fables of some old myth. Finding that very grey area, the film is a commercial film but of good quality, the kind that we don't see around, nowadays. And when I say his eyes are sharp, I mean it cuts-through-glass, sharp. All the cameras installed to encounter this outrageous battle is from a definite perspective. In a sense, that each shot is like it is taken from some person, someone's perspective, that helps connect with the viewers easily.

In fact, all the animated, alienated sequences are often shot with a frame between us and them. Like a car window or a glass window of a building or goggles or binoculars. These tiny aspects grounds the film despite of its bizarre plot points. The performance is nothing outstanding, it pretty much is, finding yourself running from something you don't understand or fear or scream for, but what hurts the most, is that the reunions that never catches us. Just like the reason of Sally Hawkins being in one of these films, Godzilla is another meaningless addition to this franchise that is showcased to present the same old story with favorite fanboy moments.

Godzilla 2014 (5/28/19)

Pros
Taking a more symbolic disaster-flick approach to the title rather than the giant monster all-out smackdown as some of its predecessors had done; Godzilla 2014 shines the best when it comes to showing the aftermath of nature’s wrath on mankind and using imagery from tragic events known to viewers at the time of release to show a message of nature’s power over us. It has genuinely great cinematic moments that leave me in awe and a soundtrack that leaves a powerful impression as these creatures wreck havoc in unique ways. When the creatures are on the screen all attention is properly directed towards them, as the effects used to portray their size, and to give them a feeling of being part of the natural world, still works today as it is truly cutting edge with what they pulled off. The sound design as well demands to be played in surround sound as the film uses each roar to build the tone and to set the scene as even the creatures themselves prove to show some genuine symbolism that leaves the viewer to think a bit more than they thought to. And while the total screen time for all creatures totals to around twenty minutes, their devastation is known through the beautifully shot destruction. Regardless the movie does have genuine shortcomings that take away a lot of what the effort was made towards and stains the movie with genuine disinterest throughout several portions of the film, which is to be discussed in the cons. + The aftermath of nature is this films strong suit
+ Outstanding effects both visual and auditory
+ Wonderful soundtrack
+ Intriguing creatures
+ Wonderfully done metaphors and symbolic imagery
+ “Kiss of Death”
+ Great cinematography
+ Creature’s presence when on screen can’t go ignored

Cons
To pull this iteration of Godzilla off in a disaster-flick, Spielberg approach; you have to have well written characters that one can emotionally attach to which this film sadly fails to provide. I could never feel for the characters, the emotion was there to feel for them and sometimes they genuinely have good moments of character but it never pays off nor does it leave me rooting for any of them. Even with the title character himself, which pains me to say because I have loved the character ever since I was a toddler, as they don’t develop his character outside of his origins and his purpose. They try to but it falls flat due to the interest being directed towards the villains of the movie which is honestly where the films development and true efforts into writing something actually extremely interesting go into play by showing a basis for the creature’s full life cycle. But with Godzilla, that isn’t provided unless you read up online on this iteration or look deeper into his actions. But the biggest problem is the film’s main character and focus of the story regarding him. It is painfully generic, and just takes away from some of the coolest portions of the film because the film decides to maintain the focus on this generic storyline regarding the character. Who, like most everything else, is underdeveloped. Another huge issue with the film is the lighting which makes some scenes or shots almost impossible to view which is an absolute shame as most of the action takes place at night and the use of strictly natural lighting is intensely present. There is a lot wrong with this film and for the sake of time, I would rather just save it for a separate piece.

- Poorly written - Emotional disconnected
- Focus of the film is generic and takes away from the greatest portions of the film
- Pitch-black lighting
- Characters are underdeveloped
- Off pacing

Overall
Godzilla 2014 does have some great parts to it and genuinely fantastic effects that still hold up to this day. But it is sadly held back by so many flaws that make a lot of it just forgettable and that is no way to treat a king.

Rather than give us a compelling story with interesting characters and at least semi-reasonable events that string together one action scene to the next, we are treated as if we are complete and utter imbeciles. Godzilla in his biggest incarnation of 350ft somehow sneaks his way around undetected, and the big "bad" monsters are much smaller but somehow are a lot easier for the humans to find. People were searching for a clue as to where the monster might be on a small island and failed to notice a hole the size of a mountain for a good long while (unfortunately, the plot holes get just as big and they don't go unnoticed for a second to anyone conscience during the film) Godzilla with his tiny little t-rex arms reaches and grabs something from offscreen after somehow sneaking up on it. We're talking about Barney the friggin' dinosaur here that is BIGGER than the statue of Liberty, it would feel like an earthquake every time it even thought about moving. The side characters and officials and military men who should know what they're doing in some degree are stooped down to unimportant-idiot-movie-character levels so that our main characters can seem intelligent rather than actually spending a few extra minutes to write a better scenario where they can actually seem intelligent. The bad monsters, the MUTO's as they're called in the film, are ironically the most relatable characters in the film, the movie even states that they're just animals trying to get by and that nature is basically trying to wipe us out because we're bad for the earth and that Godzilla for some unexplained reason has a bloodlust for them. So we're a disease and Godzilla's a murderous psychopath. How much are we to try and care for, let alone cheer for these characters?

The scenes with the humans feel like they are just padding that they only added because they knew they couldn't release a 40 minute short of monster mash ups. They serve very little actual purpose despite the plot trying it darndest to tell you otherwise, and you care nothing for them despite the plot demanding that you feel otherwise.

People give 1998 Godzilla a bad rap for plot holes and forgettable characters, but that movie was at least enjoyable and had personality. This feels like a Michael Bay Transformers movie except with big cgi monsters instead of machines. Let's face it, even with amazing talent like Cranston and Taylor-Johnson, this movie is not worth watching unless a giant monster is on screen, and that's just what you're going to be watching this for. This film has no substance, no life, no logic. This movie is about as enjoyable to watch as Transmorphers or Antlantic Rim just with better cgi and cinematography. Not worth it at all unless you really wanna see monsters fighting, which this movie does well, but if you're looking for something more worthwhile, this is not it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a huge fan of Godzilla, I was really hoping for a movie that could capture that magic from the older movies. This one does that towards the end of the movie, but not so much before. The main issue I have with this movie is that Godzilla is not in it that much. They show him from time to time but it's not full scenes of Godzilla doing his thing. With that said, the battle scene at the end of the movie is so fantastic, and possibly one of the best fights of any monster movie. The performances in this movie were pretty good all around, Bryan Cranston did a great job with his character for the beginning of the film. I would say that it does leave much to be desired, but for me, it was a fun time. Expand

During the movie humans try to intervene, but it seems the monsters hardly notice them when they aren't handing nuclear bombs on a platter, or when they aren't about to kill their babies. Godzilla is hardly in the movie, which should send red flags straight away. It is hard to keep your attention while watching this movie.

It's an average movie, it earns a 6/10 from me.

In this respect, Godzilla 2014 delivers outright. But there's no reason we shouldn't get a decent story as well. As soon as we see the eponymous creature, the humanistic side of the film descends into chaos. The characters are one-dimensional, the script is terrible and I can barely remember any dialogue. In addition, I couldn't help but note how intrusive Alexandre Desplat's soundtrack was. Gone is the tense, choral subtlety of the film's trailer and we are instead treated to Hollywood-standard booming orchestral pieces that actually make the monsters less terrifying. But on a positive note, Godzilla himself was absolutely gorgeous, and Edwards bravely waits almost a full hour to unleash him in one of the best unveilings of any cinematic character of all time. It's mad to think how an entirely digital creation can become the emotional centre of a story. And someone definitely deserves some kind of award for the film's sound design. It's just a shame that Edwards loaded the film with walking clichés, while forgetting to give show-stealer Bryan Cranston anything to do. Very disappointing. Expand

This time, we have Legendary Pictures producing, with Gareth Edwards behind the camera. This is Edwards' second film, having only done a micro-budgeted sci-fi flick beforehand. The first act is great. It has an intense atmosphere and a fantastic central performance from Bryan Cranston. It expertly builds tension, culminating in a sequence that reveals the film's monsters. Problem is, it sags a bit in the middle.

Even after the reveal, Edwards shies away from showing any significant monster action, and the focus shifts from Cranston to Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who isn't nearly as interesting. Thankfully, the final act pays off in a big way, delivering a truly jaw-dropping monster brawl. At the end of the day, I think the strengths of the first and third acts, along with the technical prowess, make this an overall engrossing experience. I just hope future installments focus more on Godzilla himself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ive long been a Godzilla fan, Ive seen almost every movie and the original one from 1954 still hails as a classic in my opinion and while there was some things that could have been done better in this movie, I still feel like this movie was/is one of the best movies of 2014 and marked a successful return for the King to America. Yeah, some could say that holding Godzilla back until roughly an hour in was sort of a letdown as well as killing off Brian Cranston(the only actor who seemed to give a **** the entire film) but this film mostly suffered from what I felt like was under-developed characters and over-all a somewhat too "human centered" movie. Taylor-Johnson is passable and Olsen is also enjoyable but other than Cranston, Hawkins, Strathairn and Watanabe the movie could have benefited from a better lead actor who could take command of the screen while not feeling like such an emotionless rock someone like Chris Pratt, Matt Damon (doubt he would do it) or even a Tom Hardy would have been much better suited for the role than Aaron Johnson. Yes, showing the human side of Godzilla's path of destruction is a much needed quality to these movies but not to the extent of giving your title character around 24 minutes of TOTAL screen time(+small appearances in the beginning) which is why I didn't have an issue with it. But on the flip side, most of the movie showed the humans being stupid and trying to nuke Godzilla(who feeds off nuclear fallout) and the MUTOs, the entire human aspect of the film could have been done alot better then the simple "lets nuke em" approach. The fight scene towards the end really made the movie for me as a whole and the final appearance by Godzilla was glorious as well. All in all, I feel like this movie was very well done. Say what you want about Godzilla's screen time but you can definitely feel his presence being felt as they cleverly took a page out of classic movies like "Jaws," and "Jurassic Park" at holding their biggest and baddest monster back, allowing you to feel his presence off screen before unleashing him onscreen. This new depiction of the great kaiju, acting as a reboot of the franchise and directed by an up-and-coming director, Gareth Edwards, is a very entertaining film despite the complaints of there being too little of Godzilla. I somewhat concur with this argument, however, having seen many of Japanese films, especially the original in 1954, it is known for Godzilla to be teased throughout the movie or have limited screen time, yet still have a profound impact on the film and the audience it is delivered to, and this is what the 2014 version does very well. However, at times, it did come at an annoyance when right as we see him, the scene changes. But this should not take away from otherwise a really good film. The design of Godzilla and the monstrous villains, the MUTOs, were very well designed and augmented to represent a respectable scale to real world buildings/infrastructure. As usual, the action scenes were a blast, with the final act dedicated to the fight we've been waiting for between the creatures. The plot carried the film smoothly, coupled with some good acting from the likes of Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, and David Strathairn. But it should be noted that the good acting came from secodnary characters while our central character, Ford Brody, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, was very bland and one-dimensional. The film was an attempt at very human orientated monster film rather than focused on the monsters themselves, which is somewhat of a problem in a movie called "Godzilla". However, Gareth Edwards blends both well enough to not detract what this film manages to accomplish. With the news of a Monsterverse being created by Legendary Studious, involving the likes of King Kong, I am very excited to see where they take Godzilla in his next movie in 2019, where he will pit off against his greatest foes, King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, before taking on King Kong in 2020 to determine who the real "King" is. Godzilla doesn't show up until 40 minutes into the movie. I expected this because Gareth Edwards's "Monsters" isn't really about monsters but at least it's a more ambitious movie with interesting characters. However, the characters in Godzilla are pretty one-dimensional.

Bryan Cranston delivers the best performance in the entire film and it's a shame he was given very little to do. Elizabeth Olsen also gives a solid performance but her character was poorly-written and she's the biggest victim of side-lining. Ken Watanabe is just exposition guy but the worst character was played by Aaron-Taylor Johnson. Johnson never gives the emotional performance needed for his character to be interesting and that's probably because his acting range is limited. Most of his films required him to be somewhat goofy, even in his more dramatic film "Nowhere Boy".

If you're looking for a mindless monster movie with great special effects, Godzilla certainly delivers but only if you're a patient viewer. Otherwise, you'll probably be disappointed that there wasn't enough Godzilla. Even though the best monster movies usually hold the monster back, the uninteresting characters and serviceable plot made me wish there was more Godzilla, or the movie to be 20 minutes shorter.

It was good but unfortunately it does have some problems. Godzilla is only in the film for about 10 minutes, that's right, 10 MINUTES. Shouldn't it focus on Godzilla more since it's his movie? Another thing is that, when your really excited for the action, it switches to a new scene. that was kinda stupid of them to do that. I thought that there was a lack of action and there should of been some more action. Okay, i'm gonna get to the good stuff cause there are great things about the movie. One is Godzilla. They got the design right and it looks like the classic Godzilla rather than that bad design of Godzilla from the 1998 film of the same name. two, the acting was great, they know what's happening. Three is the fight scene between Godzilla and another monster, that was pretty cool. Godzilla can be boring at times but wait til the action comes, you'll have a bit of fun! Expand

This film is amazing, but it's hated for the wrong reason. People complain about Godzilla's lack of screen time. Well, he got 10 minutes of screen time in the original, which everyone praised.

Godzilla is only in the movie for about eleven minutes, which wouldn't be as much of a problem if the human characters were interesting. Sadly, the only human character I cared about was Bryan Cranston, who dies about half an hour into the movie, leaving us with his bland, much less interesting son, who has little to no personality or charisma. Then, just as it seems we are finally about to get the rampaging monster action that the whole movie has been building up to, they ruin it by shrouding all the action in near-total darkness and throwing in two extra monsters that are in the movie more than Godzilla himself. Overall, this movie is a mess. It's full of tension-building without payoff, and spends about 17 minutes of its run time focusing on the main character trying to save a child who has no purpose in the plot. If you want a good creature-feature, I'd recommend Cloverfield or The Beast From 20000 Fathoms. Expand

Godzilla is what modern blockbusters needed, suspense and thrill. Despite having a distinct lack of the titular character, the character buildup and story meshed with the underlying tone of the film. The CGI is masterful and used incredibly.

As a fan of Godzilla, I thought this was a satisfying film and a CGI masterpiece. Gareth Edwards demonstrated that he has potential in Hollywood -- hopefully Rogue One is great as well. The performances were great by Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn, Elizabeth Olsen, and definately Bryan Cranston. I wasn't a big fan of Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character -- though it wasn't a huge problem. I was disappointed that it was snubbed for "best achievement in visual effects" from the Academy Awards as it simply was beautiful to watch.

English and Italian review.
Remember when as children you watched on TV movies like " Mazinger Z tai Devilman " with disappointment? Because the clash between the two protagonists was really just a tiny part of the cartoon? This Godzilla offer the same feeling . You hope for a movie of a certain type and instead you find a trivial story of a Marine who faces a disaster in a city !! During this disaster Godzilla appears, but it is just a cameo in the background.
The action is uninspired, dull dialogue , no suspense , banal nuclear pollution rhetoric, mediocre special effects . Toho films with actors who wear rubber suits to represent the monsters are much more fun!

Summary: Godzilla is a slow-burn film with a huge emphasis on human perspective, and quite similar to Gareth Edwards' previous work "Monsters". 91/100 [A-]

It makes me happy that Edwards directed this movie. I liked the way he did not show Godzilla throughout the film, that was very clever and suspenseful. This film felt very similar to Edwards' previous work "Monsters". I highly recommend you to watch "Monsters" before watching this film. I have read a lot of negative comments from the audience, it is sad that people do not appreciate the awesomeness of Gareth's work. Godzilla (2014) is not your average blockbuster, and the best thing about it is that it does not rely on the special effects. It focuses more on the human perspective and cares about its characters.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson did a pretty good job, but his character was somewhat boring and I would be okay if he died. Elizabeth Olsen was fine, even though I did not feel 100% engaged with her character, I still cared about her. Bryan Cranston was terrific in his role, his performance gave me the chills. Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins were excellent too. Also, there were some little roles in the film that were very effective: the bus driver in the bridge sequence, and a little girl in the tsunami scene. This movie has a few flaws and one of them is that spends too much of its running time developing its characters.

It is a film with a huge emphasis on realism and human perspective. It requires a lot of patience, you have to wait an hour to finally see Godzilla, and that is not a bad thing. The movie has a bunch of exciting moments throughout. There are a lot of people saying that there was not enough of Godzilla in the movie. The big guy had 12 minutes of screen time, and that was fine to me. I left the movie theater completely satisfied and happy because the payoff was huge to me. I was on the edge of my seat during the last 20 minutes. The third act was a huge payoff, a mind-blowing spectacle of dazzlingly special effects and an epic battle between the three monsters.

I saw it on 3D and it was an awesome experience. The visual effects and the sound mixing were just breathtaking. Just imagine all the work that was required to make the design of the MUTOs and Godzilla. Gareth Edwards and his team clearly appreciate the monsters. Moving on, the fight sequences were bold, exciting and the CGI looked so neat. These monsters are masterfully designed, and they look scary as hell to me. I am so glad that the trailer did not show too much of the final act. Also, the musical score by Alexandre Desplat was great and fits with the tone of the film. The tsunami scene includes one of my favorite tracks.

Another strength of the movie was the beautiful camera work. Edwards wants you to feel as if you are right there seeing a monster through your eyes, with his camera movements. I felt like I was into the movie. Also, there was a scene that reminded me of the 9/11 attacks. It was very short and many people missed it, but it is one of my favorite moments in the movie. It was just a plane crashing into a building and it looked quite real. Overall, Godzilla is a slow-burn spectacle with a huge emphasis on human perspective and empathy, very similar to Edwards' previous work "Monsters". Despite a few dull characters, it delivers exciting action, stunning camera work and a payoff. [A-]

The film has a great score, there are cool bits here and there, and there is a great climax towards the end, Pacific Rim style – if a bit less ridiculously cool — and the start of the film is great.

But no one can argue that it's a flawed film. It is too long, with too little Bryan Cranston, Japan, and Godzilla; and too much random military guys who do nothing - like good ol' Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

It's not a glowing endorsement of Gareth Edwards, but I don't understand some of the slating it's got -- or some of the praising it's got. Godzilla is an alright film.

60/100.

I expected to be underwhelmed by this one, but I truly enjoyed it a good bit. The suspense created in anticipation of seeing Godzilla and the monsters was brilliantly executed and set up everything well. Truly, the mystery and then resulting sense of awe are what makes this one very good. The creature design is fantastic as well and the visual effects are phenomenal. In addition, the sound mixing on this one is out of this world good. Now, what holds back Godzilla? It is a Godzilla movie, so it would have nice to see more attention paid to him than the other monsters. I love his amount of screen time, but he does not dominate that screen time in any way. Additionally, it is a popcorn flick. Inherently, it feels formulaic and too predictable. At no moment are you truly surprised by the path taken by the film and this prevents it from being even better. As it stands though, Godzilla is a very good film that entertains readily. Expand

If only its story was half as good as these elements. The plot basically boils down to giant monsters traveling to a meeting point to fight. The plot starts out more emotionally and character driven than you would expect, but eventually you begin to realize that these characters are not very well written and sorta boring. The filmmaking and acting elevates the movie into good territory and it has a handful of jaw dropping moments so I'd still recommend it. But it's still not what the filmmakers or trailer promised. That would have been The Dark Knight of monster movies, but settling for a decently entertaining diversion isn't the worst thing considering that it could have been a disaster. Expand

Before watching this film: I was aware of Godzilla and had seen some parts of the Japanese live action films and some American cartoons. I did not finish watching the 90's Godzilla film on TV - it was dull.

Premise: Godzilla appears from the deep to fight other monsters and in doing so, cause major damage and many deaths.

(This review is based on watching the film on TV, so my judgement is not fooled by the Dolby 7.1 surround sound or the big screen you would get in a cinema.)

Pros: There isn't any.

Cons:
1) Some reviewers have said that there are too few scenes with Godzilla in them. This is true and it is a major disappointment.

2) Some reviewers have said that having fewer Godzilla scenes is a positive for the film. They are lying to you or they are living in denial. They had wanted to like the film and this has clouded their judgement.

3) This film is unbelievably frustrating because it is as if the director had intentionally kept scenes of Godzilla to a minimal, as if to imitate Spielberg's decision on Jaws. Gareth Edwards hid Godzilla away with smoke, darkness, closing doors, scene change, etc. However, Spielberg was forced to do so due to numerous problems with the shark models. Gareth Edwards had CGI and his decision here just makes me want to hate him.

4) The acting of the main characters were bad! Brian Cranston was unnecessarily desperate, his characters son's and Strathairn just looked bored, and Watanabe was overwhelmed all the time. This is what happens when you get actors to act opposite nothing. The monsters were added in afterwards. The same thing happened in the three Star Wars prequels.

5) The plot was just dumb. It's the same type of nonsense you get when the US encounter aliens or big monsters. Just bomb the enemy to smithereens and if that doesn't work, bring out your nuclear arsenal and bomb them some more.

6) Many of the special effects were wrong. The Golden Gate bridge's deck would have dropped down a few feet when the first major cable was snapped by the exploding missile and the whole middle span would have collapsed when both major cables had snapped. Both of these did not happen and no one bothered to tell the director or the director had not bothered to check this out. Furthermore, Godzilla moving about in the water so close to shore would have caused major tsunamis. Some tsunamis were clearly missing.

7) Why did Godzilla have a grudge against the MUTOs? Such a grudge that it needed to get out of it's hiding place to kill the MUTOs and risk being killed by the US Army?

8) How could any living thing love radiation that much such that it requires radiation for it's eggs? Radiation kills.

Score: 2/5 (no half scores) Don't bother watching this film. Not even on TV. Not even when someone lends you the DVD.

Who would be satisfied with this film? Some teens and some adults.

Director Gareth Edwards did the smart thing by building up the story piece by piece which helped the audience stay at a very normal following pace. The Actors and Actresses were very well by making their characters likable and very easy to understand who they actually are. This Godzilla was an even better at box office and it was praised more the critics. I expected an entertaining movie out of this reboot, and I got one.

It has flaws(every Godzilla movie does, people seem to forget...). The Godzilla teasing got annoying and the two co-star monsters are pretty generic-Cloverfield-ey, but it didn't ruin the movie for me.

I didn't find the humans to be boring, and I was sad that Bryan Cranston isn't in it very much, but I appreciate that Godzilla had actual back-story, rather than the two other monsters(which could be a flaw, they're not very interesting).
I love Godzilla's new design and personality, plus that final fight at the end was brilliant.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Looking back at this movie, the characters actually all fall flat. Some are just there cuz plot, whereas the ones that serve importance just sort of stand around planning how to kill Godzilla and the other two monsters. Elizabeth Olsen is only there to make you care about whether or not Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character survives to the end, which is something that Bryan Cranston's character did not succeed in doing, even though he should've. In my opinion, he was the best character in the movie, as he predicted that the monsters would eventually overpower the humans, but, when they did, he ended up getting killed. What? Why? I wish his character would've lasted longer just to see what he could've done. In the final battle scene, Godzilla does all the work in killing the two monsters, whereas the other soldiers all get themselves killed, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson runs off and tries to fight the monsters himself, but realizes how stupid he is being and cowers in fear, waiting for help to arrive. The only reason he survived is because his father was already dead and he had a wife and young son, however, if he didn't have that, and his character was just a miserable loser, the movie could've gotten away with killing him off. The special effects in this movie were absolutely phenomenal, and whoever edited this film should've won Best Editing at the Oscars. So, the characters just fall flat completely, but the special effects and monster scenes make up for that loss with their sheer scale and awesomeness. Expand

The effects on Godzilla are amazing, the atmosphere created is perfect, and the action sights are some of the best to grace the cinema this summer. With the film nailing the elements of a Godzilla movie it is baffling while this is shoved into the background. The film instead focuses on a bunch of human characters who the audience is supposed to care about but it is difficult to when they are poorly developed and when you see glimpses of amazing fight scenes in the background you are screaming for the film to focus on that. Had the film cut down on the lengthy build up and just give us a straightforward monster fighting movie this could’ve been one of the highlights of the summer. Instead, the film makes the bizarre choice to not focus on those elements much resulting in a film that is sometimes awesome. This is a frustrating film as the atmosphere, build up, and payoff created are amazing but the film doesn’t seem interesting that. Why would you make a Godzilla movie if you aren’t going to focus on Godzilla? I am open to new interpretations of the story but it feels like a tease to provide such amazing action scenes but show not much interest them. Maybe I’d be more excepting if this film wasn’t called Godzilla. The film could’ve used any other random monster and the film would’ve meant even less. The action is amazing but unlike Pacific Rim I felt like it never got to fully payoff. I’m not really sure whether or not to recommend this because when this film is amazing it is amazing but those moments are mere seconds apart. Expand
