A very mature movie that can be best categorized as a psychological drama. The drama overpowers the thriller aspect, in my opinion. Not only can you find great depth in the story, but the characters

Essentially, the best way the brand could go on without prostituting its true nature. Expand

The pacingAfter the original Ghost in the Shell, one of the most highly regarded animated films of all time, they made this movie. This movie is absolutely horrible. I don't want to refer to it by name because it doesn't deserve the title. The pacing is slower than glacial, the dialogue consists entirely of pretentious quote-centric diatribes, the plot and story don't make any sense, some sequences seemingly exist only to confuse the viewer and derail the story while adding nothing to the film. The movie clearly had an insane budget, because the movie takes every single possible opportunity to fellate itself and show off the animation, which is kind of funny because the computer drawn animation is horrible compared to the original's hand-drawn animation. This seriously ranks among the worst movies I've ever seen, it's boring, it's pretentious, it makes no sense, it's almost unwatchable. 2 points go out for the animation and Kenji Kawai's great soundtrack. Visually glorious, but the imbalance between it's philosophical pretensions , the visual poetry and the action ultimately fail to maintain a proper rhythm to keep the audience interested in all those metaphorical symbols.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's a movie out there called El Topo. its about a dude trying to find a golden TURD. This is similar movie. What you get out of it is wasted time and the fact that this movie is SHIIT. Oshii needs to be dragged out into the street choked out beaten revived repeat. Its about as exciting as watching paint dry and the amount of self-fellating is embarassing. It makes stuff like Angel Cop and Mad Bull look like award winners. Expand

This sequel is full of monologues and it becomes repetitive and most of the issues shown here are similar to the ones on the first film, and they actually feel irrelevant. Innocence is definitely a disappointment, not a bad movie but by the grandeur of its predecessor pales completely.

Some part of the narrative becomes incomprehensible and the plot does not clarify many points besides that it does not provide elements to it. Action sequences are nice and well coordinated, although they are nothing that has not been seen in any respectable anime.

The animation is amazing, drawn up in a better way, the details are more elaborate and smooth, although the atmosphere of this film has nothing to do with the original.
The score is pleasant but not memorable and barely manages to be relevant in the dramatic points of the film.

I frankly expected something superior, I enjoy the film but certainly I did not miss anything really surprising in all these years.

This is the second movie, where The Major has left and Batou gets a new partner, but if you've seen the anime you're already vaguely familiar with all of the characters you'll see here. They're a little different but not too much. In terms of the actual content, this movie mixes is up with some armchair philosophy, some cyberpunk gunfights, and some slow establishing shots that reminded me of Blade Runner. It's a solid watch if you're familiar with what's going on in Ghost In The Shell, but it doesn't take much time to explain the sort of stuff that's going on if you're new to the series. Expand

Falls short of the splendor of the first movie. GitS 2 seems to be doing 3 things:

1) Recapture the spirit and style of the first movie.
While a nice idea, the producers seem to have forgotten there were 2 whole seasons inbetween the movies. So the characters and tone of the series have changed quite drastically since GitS1.
2) It pays allot of fan service (not the pervy kind) by clearly linking this movie to the first movie and the series.
This, for me, was the movie's strong point. Dedication and acknowledgement of its fan base is crucial. It was nice to see the loose ends left from GitS: Second Gig being wrapped up. However, I would imagine that anyone not familiar with the series was probably scratching their head.
3) Artistic animation overload.
Clearly they were trying as hard as they could to amaze and dazzle with the animation, just like the first movie. While the animation was fantastic, it just did not have the same effect the first movie did. If they had stuck with hand drawn animation, it is likely they would have gotten the reaction they had intended.

Overall:
GitS 2 is a very good movie, but I have to say that is also the worst installment of the series as well. If they had stuck to the tone and animation style of the TV series, then maybe they could have had another generation defining movie, but as it is, it is just another good looking anime that fails to stand out from its competition.

Достойный сиквел, даже очень, но первая часть для меня была более ровная.

The artwork, sound and most other elements deliver in similar fashion, but the excess of literary quotes, like a high schooler attempting to hit a in-line quote quota in an essay, bog down the film significantly and made the OK plot harder to follow. I doesn't quite match the original, but it is a decent follow-up. Expand

It might be the Disney influence that motivated the philosophical angle to be driven home near the start of the film by a minor character and not to let the audience work it out and feel it, as was the case in the original movie - which was much better for it. Also the implementation of the digital art, at times, can tend to draw the viewer out of the story, this weakens the effect and the movie. If you've watched the brilliant first movie then give this a view. If you haven't... THEN WATCH THE FIRST MOVIE: IT'S AWESOME. Expand

I really don't understand why this gets such a high rating, especially after such a fantastic original. The dialogue ranges from brilliant to rambling pontification, some of which doesn't actually make sense when you follow its logic path, some contradictory, but most of it just way too long and distracting. I understand GitS is supposed to be contemplating man/machine/artificiality/intelligence, but this just goes over the top into banality. Especially some of the tangents and diatribes the villain takes, which are just silly.

The animation and action is generally great, but even then it seems to meander about and just take too long to get through. I don't like to say everything is just overly-detailed, but unfortunately it is and the movie just doesn't make the case for it. There's especially a strange "hallucination" scene that just gets too inception-like for its own good, and is filled with many of the cheesy laughable moments that make this sequel stand out in the wrong way.

Sorry if you disagree, I love robot and AI movies, but this one was so disappointing and slow and depressing that it took multiple sessions to get through without falling asleep or losing attention. Also the DVD did not have sub-titles so I had a hard time hearing some of the dialog; maybe that would have helped, but I doubt much.

Ładna i zrobiona z rozmachem kontynuacja klasyka z 1995. Przepełniona filozoficznymi pytaniami daje do myślenia widzowi jednak ponownie cierpi na nadmiar ekspozycji. Szkoda, że cała historia kończy się w taki średnio spełniający sposób
