A good, tense, psychological horror story brimming with satire. Looking forward to more of Peele's work as a director.

Bravo to its writer/director Jordan Peele for delivering a movie that is both witty and chilling. Hey, I noticed that one of the characters (in a brief but pivotal role) is named "Roman Armitage." I'm wondering if that could be a tip of the hat to the classic horror movie "Rosemary's Baby," which has a somewhat similar character named Roman Castavet. And it was directed by Roman Polanski. Don't know about you, but I haven't met too many Romans in everyday life. Wondering if Jordan Peele is paying a little homage to that movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think that this film was very strange. At some points I thought to myself "Am I watching a horror movie or a thriller?". The cast did an okay job with the film. The plot line was very similar to A Cure For Wellness. The part with the deer made out of bones was way to weird for my taste. Expand

My heart was pounding and I was actually yelling 'Get Out!' There is a menace hiding under the so-called nice people. The brother character was sufficiently scary, the parents - definitely creepy. Everyone else - WTF is going on? But, what a hugely disappointing ending. The ending resorted to pure trope horror crap. Unique concept = Lost with this un-unique unoriginal ending. Did I switch channels and find the ending to a different movie? Did the same writer who wrote the first 2/3rds write this stupid ending? Did the writer just give up? Did the producers decide they needed chopped body parts and 'fight to the death' scenes and re-write the ending? The writer should have found a much smarter resolution, in keeping with the rest of the movie. Too bad. Expand

Besides maybe The Babadook's portrayal of mental illness. The film is just so energetic and does such a marvelous job of building up suspense, drama and raw tension that really just leaves u nervous and anxious throughout the course of the film. The film is not supernatural **** jump-scary, it's more so, a rapid frantic and high kinetic descent into madness, and absolute mayhem as the plot progresses. The film IS F**KING CRAZY at times, the actual resolution, and the actual situation our character gets himself in is just awful, and it just gets much worse as the flick goes on. I loved it. The actual social commentary the flick presents is also very fresh and interesting angle on social issues surrounding racism, that I personally found rewarding and interesting. It's a flick that is bold, and social relievent that has an important tale to tell. I like to think of "get out" more so like Lynchian, twilight zone esc show or movie. Kinda surreal, kinda spooky, but absolutely marvelous, interesting and highly philosophical and conceptual. Any issues I had generally tend to be around possibly the flick not being long enough. Overwise, I honestly can't think of much wrong with the film. i loved it. Expand

The film, while starred by African Americans and having one that ultimately is the hero, tries to keep an even balance to make all audiences happy. As a white male and one that has conservative political views I wouldn't say the film is as racist as some reviewers say. I get it, black people can be racist too. But this film never really came across as racist in any sort of way. For those who aren't happy - is it that bad for there to be a black male who is the star of the film? The main actor was excellent and again he stayed neutral on the whole race thing. Anyways moving past that, this is my first review on here and made an account for this specifically. The film was good but definitely not worth the critical acclaims. It was fun to watch but at times it could be slow. Peele did an alright job and that's why I'm giving this a 7. I feel like the only reason why this was rated so highly on Rotten Tomatoes is because the main actor is African American and Hollywood is showing their liberal bias. Look, he was great but the film itself was not worth the critical acclaim. The supporting cast was sort of lousy which really overshadows his rperformance. This isn't a must-see like it's played up to be but it's a good film to watch. Won't be an all time great. Expand

I immediately thought to myself "There's no way it can be THAT good!" To give you a brief idea, some of the most acclaimed films of all time don't even have this rating ("The Godfather" only has a 99%.) So I went into this while trying not to keep my expectations too high just in case. I'm glad that I did, because this film turned out to be good, but nothing more than good. It had some clever ideas and horror trope twists throughout, as well as some interesting background commentary on race in today's society, but other than that, the film was mostly played out predictably with no real game-changing elements or shocks like I had hoped. Overall, it's undoubtedly a clever and unique film in more ways than not and serves as a worthwhile directorial debut for Jordan Peele, but personally, I'd recommend disregarding that 100%, because simply put, it certainly isn't THAT good! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hate horror movies a lot, but Get Out is one huge exception. I loved the way they set the girlfriend app to be his ultimate betrayal. I thought she was on his side up to when she took a long time to get the car keys. I also thought he was going to die and leave me disappointed but I love that he got revenge on everyone at the end, with the help of his funny side kick. I liked the use of humor throughout and the unsettling nature of the film, without too many jump scares that detract me from these sort of movies. Overall, I would give it a 9.7. Expand

Writer/director Jordan PeeleDaniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams make a cute couple: He's black and she's white. When they go to meet her parents, the extremely accommodating family and some weirdly off-kilter help cause concern..and more. Writer/director Jordan Peele has created a slowly mounting sense of fear that's more about racial tension than cinematic scares. Still, the sinister portent builds with steady apprehension that leads to a brutal outcome. While satirical observations on prejudice add humor (and some plot points strain logic), the overall effect is suitably chilling and completely entertaining. Expand

Now you're in the sunken place!

Not all the directional debut sees this kind of welcome from the audience. Yeah, Jordan Peele had written and directed it. It is similar to the 90s style mystery-thrillers. Definitely must see for the 90s, 80s guys. It kind of looked like a black comedy, but I guess that's not they had preferred. Especially that teacup scenes and some of the close up shots, that freaks, yet very funny.

Well, this is the story of an interracial romance. When Chris decides to meet his girlfriend's white family, living outskirt of her hometown, all goes as planned. But he was not sure how her parents take it, that he's a black. Now everything has settled, but his visit started to take a strange turn after a series of weird events. What it is and how he overcomes it is the remaining tale.

The casting was amazing. The story was suspenseful. You would feel you can predict the scenes, but not that easy and when twist happens, you will realise it was simple as that. This is a hit film now, but if it was 20 years ago, surely would have gotten a cult classic status. And yes it is, thinking the future.

When this got out and its pre release, I thought it would disappear without any trace. It is rare a recognition a film like this to get to having a second string cast, debutante director and being a low cost film. I got entertained thoroughly as it delivered as promised. But I think some people are overjoyed and praising it like crazy. That's true if you are not a film fanatic, otherwise it is one of those decent films. Surely not to be missed. One of the best of this year.

Brilliantly constructed sequences convey differing layers of racism from subtle to overt, combining with paranoia to form a psychological horror theme with the main character Chris at the central focus through a white suburban nightmare, switching genre between an at times awkward comedy into a jarring horror thriller. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It isn't a very good comedy but it is dark and it is well made and well acted. As usual, many things don't make sense especially some of the twists but that doesn't matter much. The distrust between the races theme is extremely well done even if it is extreme. The story isn't great but the direction and photography are excellent. Most white people have a lot of fear of black men and this film may shock people into some serious thinking about the other side of the coin. Until the 60s, black men could be killed and black women could be raped in the South and sometimes elsewhere with very little chance that the perpetrators would face justice. And many innocent blacks were prosecuted and sentenced throughout our history for all sorts of crimes. Bravo for the people who made this film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went in expecting the film to have very little depth and to be purely a "white people bad" type of film but was actually pleasantly surprised and entertained. I will say that I wish the film wasn't so based upon race and more about the family's mind control experiments, since this part of the film seemed far more interesting and had some science fiction roots. The slow build was well done by Poole but I felt the last 25 minutes of the film were rushed and didn't leave as much impact as I had hoped. The comic relief is great but sometimes overdone during serious moments of the film. (Rod and Chris in the car after) I felt the film would have won over both political crowds had it not been so focused on the issue of race. don't we get enough politics from the news/social media? I didn't learn anything informative about race while watching the film since stereotypes have always existed and so has racism. The movie has some amazing ideas that remind of past horror films but I believe it race-baits a little too much. Pros: Good pacing, strong lead role (Daniel Kaluuya), interesting use of ideas such as hypnosis and mind control to preserve a family for generations, sparing use of gore (but fantastic when used). Cons: Too focused around politics to win over both crowds, flimsy supporting cast, rushed conclusion. I would give it a 7.5 if I wasn't limited to having to choose full numbers. DISCLAIMER: This is coming from someone who is a Conservative and voted for Trump, and look I didn't give the movie an awful score, would you look at that... P.S The kill with the deer head was fantastic. (Definitely the most important spoiler in my opinion) :D Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the movie, and I thought the concept was quite innovative within the horror genre. I did have problems with the movie however - some of the conversations between characters were later inferred to in every case be an act of jealousy, to kind of tie into a major plot twist. I honestly didn't myself receive that information from watching these conversations at all, and I think this could have been communicated more effectively in the scriptwriting. I also felt the protagonist should have been more concerned with the situation - so I had to suspend disbelief at his actions(in fairness this happens alot in horrors). Aside from that I didn't get any strong emotions of fear, danger or creepiness. This is all of course an individual experience that might differ to other people. Other than that I thought the movie was well executed across the board with the actors, setting and the idea behind it was brilliant. 7.2/10, not a massive appreciation for this movie, but i'm glad i watched it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was interesting but figured out what was going on right at the beginning. Made the mistake of saying this out loud to my girlfriend and ruined it for her aswell. It is pretty obvious though very early on if you have watched alot of movies. I have seen the movie skelton key and this was just like that.
When the father says about his parents being sick and the gardener and maid being the two that took care of them it was 100% obvious, plus it then confirms this by showing the grandpa/gardener running like an Olympic athlete (the father had also mentioned his father had been an Olympic runner just before then). I did enjoy watching Chris getting even though and some of the more subtle items in the film were very well done it was just everything was completely predictable, even the meeting with the blind man it was obvious what it was leading to. I did get an uneasy feeling watching some of the scenes but didn't find it the least bit scary. Chris' friend did provide good comic relief as well. It was okay, not deserving of all the praise though as not anything that hasn't been done before.
The acting was very good.
I would give it 7 of of 10.

Get Out is a physiological thriller. It is also a horror film. It is also a satire. It is also a political commentary on race in America. In short, Get Out is a unique film going experience.

The premise at the outset is simple enough, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) a young African-american man from Boston, takes a trip to the suburbs with his white girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) to meet her parents for the first time.

In the early scenes debut writer/director Jordan Peele (of Key and Peele fame) expertly combines tried and tested horror tropes (‘That deer came out of nowhere!’) with the uncomfortable racial undertones of modern America to build tension and just generally make you feel uneasy.

Chris’ first evening with Rose’s family is where the script is at its best. Before anything too left of field happens the film is content to play out as a kind of social horror as Rose’s affluent parents Dean (Bradley Whitfield) and Missy (Catherine Keener) attempt, unsuccessfully to make Chris feel welcome. From the family’s ever present African American ‘servants’ to Dean’s declarative statement that — ‘I would have voted for Obama a third time’, every line and visual cue is meticulously designed to put Chris and the audience on edge.

The real gut punch of the first act though doesn’t come from the any member of the increasingly sinister Armitage family. During Rose and Chris’ private ‘debrief’ on the days events it becomes clear that Chris isn’t shocked or appalled by the casual racism he’s experienced. Instead he shrugs it off, saying simply ‘I told you so’. For me, this scene and Chris’ attitude is the crux of the film. Jordan Peele is using this everyday context to highlight a harsh everyday reality; that this kind of racism is not only common, it is sometimes accepted by those on the receiving end as a fact of life, something they just have to deal with.

Now for me to say I understand this in any real world way would be incredibly reductive and facetious. I am after all a white guy from England, I don’t know the first thing about A) being black or B) being any part of American society. What I would say though is that with the character of Chris, Jordan Peele has created a compelling, complex protagonist who can be related to on a deeply personal level as well as being a representative for African Americans.

Any good horror/thriller is nothing without a hero you can get on board with and Daniel Kaluuya’s performance here is nothing short of outstanding. As a showcase for his talents Get Out provides an amazing launching point for what I hope will be a long and varied career (next up he joins the Marvel Universe with a role in Black Panther in 2018).

After the initial evening with the parents the film uses Missy’s profession as a psychiatrist to kick things into a new, horrifying and visually dynamic gear while the arrival of a dozen or so very white house guests the next day pushes the social awkwardness to whole new levels.

As the true plot unfolds, new revelations and twists pile up, adding fresh context to the earlier scenes (this is definitely a film that will benefit from repeat viewings). As always I won’t spoil the main plot but needless to say its all very **** up.

Throughout the film a subplot involving Chris’ friend Rod (Lil Rel Howery), provides some much needed comic relief which, although welcome, would’ve felt a little out of place if things hadn’t played out the way they did.

To discuss the film any further would require me to go further into spoiler territory and really dig into the Armatige’s ‘evil scheme’ and all it implies.

For now all I’ll say is Get Out is unlike anything you’ve seen before. It’s entertaining, it’s thought provoking and it is sure to be discussed for many years to come. Go see it at you earliest convenience….then we can talk.

The movie's comedy is hilarious at times, and filled with great dry sarcasm. All of the actors give a good performance, and the ending of this movie is dynamite. That being said, it has 2 big problems. 1: When the main guy looks through his girlfriend's pictures, his girlfriend looks THE SAME AGE in every picture, and, if you remember the scene, there are quite a few pictures. This is an error that just doesn't make sense. My second problem may be a little more controversial: Every white person is evil. I know the movie is saying something about racism, but in the real world, not EVERY white person is a racist monster. If it had at least one NOT RACIST white character, it wouldn't have this problem. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not terrible, but can't see how this is in any way Oscar-worthy. If you're gonna make a movie about brain transplants, you better at least have something interesting to back you up. Oh, the character we immediately introduce as a hypnotist, and the guy who got kidnapped in the first scene, and the hypnotized servants... those are all related? WHAT??? And only an HOUR into the movie we find that all out? Crazy, man! What a twist!! Put this right up there with Citizen Kane! But seriously, the acting is pretty great and the movie's tone does weirdly keep you spellbound, hoping some thrilling twist lies just around the corner. If it did, this would be an awesome flick, but instead we get a dumb plot with a dumb ending that obscures all of the super valid points it was trying to make about race in the first place. Yes, white people are patronizing, yes they appropriate black culture, yes they don't think they are racist when they talk about Tiger Woods or Obama. All perfectly valid points that should get attention. But I don't come to the movies to just "get" the movie. There's more to a movie than just its message, and no excuse for a mind-numbingly inane plot. It would have made a decent 22 minute Twilight Zone, but doesn't have enough for a full feature length film. Unless it's the first movie you've ever seen, it is painfully amateurish and, leaving the "message" aside, the plot is ridiculous, predictable and without any imagination or layers of development. It's a premise, it's not a movie. Should've been called "Get On With It"! Expand

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but Get Out really is not all that it's cracked up to be, and certainly--in my opinion--is not worthy of most of the Oscar nominations it received.

As a "horror comedy," it tries to be funny and scary and it never really seems to succeed at either. The horror relies mostly upon the assumption that the viewer doesn't know what's really going on at this white family's home, but the twist that suddenly gives the "big reveal" is predictable about half way into the film. The humor mostly consists of awkward situations that the main character finds himself in and they certainly don't produce any laughs, but rather just concerned cringe-induced chuckles.

That being said, Daniel Kaluuya gives an incredibly emotion-filled performance as Chris and the dialogue--when it's not attempting at humor--is quick and effective at delivering Jordan Peele's admittedly original but flawed story and emotion involved therein.

Get Out is a predictable but sufficiently engaging thriller that clearly only received the Oscar nominations it got because of its political agenda.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched breathless until the end of an absolutely fabulous script. Throughout the film, you can predict the turn of a job at home, but you can not predict exactly what it is.

yes it will be absolutely dangerous something is sure to happen but it is hard to guess what it is,what it is,what it is

Obviously I could not figure it out at the end of the idea that people would get into their brains surprised me, I thought more simple things like slaves and rose did not expect it to be in this job, it was a question that I thought was good and surprised me In general I really like the filmin topic, I won the academy prize in the best screenplay category I must say that you absolutely deserve it I could say a better film than this one because I do not call the film bad but it just might be better I like the film in general I just found the final scene a bit nasty was a bit simple

I could not have liked Chris's things very easily, and I could not have liked that kind of scenes.

Sure, the scares come and when they do they're great. In fact, it could be a brilliant thriller film if it wanted to. It's not one of those movies which have way too many scares, with no focus being put upon the storytelling. The pace of the movie is really fast, which is good as in some horror films you feel like they focus more upon the setup and just deliver jump scares at the end. The performances are really good. Daniel Kaluuya is brilliant in the film. Just watch that scene where he first goes into the Sunken Place, excellent acting. I think Allison Williams goes really under the radar as she also gives a good performance. The screenplay and score was outstanding building that feeling of dread and realization that he couldn't get out of the place but was just stuck here. The story is fabulous with so many inventive and creative things making twists all the time. The final act is great, right when you understand everything on one go in that TV conversation scene. There's no wonder that this film won Best Original Screenplay at the oscars Expand

TheThe great parts about this movie really come into play when they get to the girlfriend’s home. From the start, you know there’s something not right about this family and creepy things are going on in the house while they are there. The suspense generated as the movie goes on and really keeps you invested. This is done by learning more about the characters physcologically and not just their backgrounds. You go through this whole and you see how messed up the concept of this movie is and how screwed up the girl’s parents are. But, the movie doesn’t beat you over head with the horror or suspense, there is good humor in the movie that doesn’t derail the movie and gives a god break from the suspense. Too much of that can make it feel more like generic horror movie and that isn’t what stands out today. The good humor in place makes this movie stand out even more and keeps you invested in the film.

It’s hard to review this movie without spoilers so I’ll just talk about the cinematography for the last part. The suspense generated from the camera work is amazing, by that I mean some of the simple parts gives you even more ideas of something not right. One example is actually from the tailer when he goes to give the guy a fist bump but the guy jus grabs his hand like a handshake. The close-up of the hands gives this subtle idea that the people who work at this house are not normal and that there is something on at this house that can’t be good in any way.

A boring movie full of gaps from the beginning to the end. It seems like the directors tried to play a trick to the audience and forgot the movie sense.

No doubt Jordan Peele has some directing chops, and for its time, it had an original and nuanced perspective on racial dynamics. What really bogs the movie down and keeps it from holding up are its on-the-nose visual metaphors and its lame one-liners and quips that feel more at home in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than they do in a semi-serious black comedy, and serve as some serious mood whiplash. A decent first start, remains to be seen if its good enough to spin a career out of. Expand

While the film isn't awful by any means. I just couldn't stay focused on it for more than one hour, and that hour felt like two hours.

An enjoyable horror comedy. It is a confrontational look at race in America, but it's strength lies in nuanced comedy rather than the horror/thriller aspect which comes across as pretty weak at times.

This film doesn’t judge people either, it’s a balanced and engaging story, very well acted with interesting characters. It is not political. I didn’t like the cinematography, the mixture of light blue and warm hues seemed pretty janky to me. There was also some warp stabiliser apparent especially for the car scenes. The dialogue quality was a little uneven, mostly on the men sounding a little crackly like hair rubbing on a microphone. The music was memorable although some choices didn’t feel appropriate. Some moments also felt scripted rather than natural. These are minor complaints though and only have a minor negative impact on the film. Get Out reminded me much more of Society (1989) and The Stepford Wives (1975) than Fight for Your Life (1977) which is a good thing as Fight for Your Life is a very obvious film whilst Get Out is more unexpected. There are some truly great moments. Worth watching. Expand

The idea of racist clan conspiring on a young talented black man (with a twist) is something that could be made work, but the director did just a poor job: - pacing (two thirds of the movie is boring, nothing of interest happens) - bland (cliche?) racist tropes - not so grand grand finale - poorly interjected humor (the movie can't decide whether it is serious or tongue-in-cheek) - plot holes

Still, the twist (revealed at the end) is a nice one, so not a total waste of time.

One of those movies where you almost don't know what to expect from it. Starting as a good home movie and ending as a terrible (in a good way) thriller. The plot itself captures your interest every minute of your screen time. And when you are already almost sure of the finale of the whole film, then suddenly something happens that you could not imagine. The acting team performed their roles perfectly, especially the main young couple. The debut work of Jordan Peele clearly deserves awards and praise from critics and viewers. Expand

From start to finish this movie is easy to follow along and delivers a great suspenseful thriller. Easily Peele’s best film.

While most of the movie is just a build-up to the climax,it sort of keeps you watching to see what is going to happen next. Its a very interesting movie and definitely a must-watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My favourite recent horror movie. Jordan Peele's achievement as a writer and, above all, as a director are admirable. All characters are greatly defined and end up playing a meaningful role in the third act (what a satisfying payoff btw). Expand

Thrilling and entertaining. Still amazing after several rewatches. I don't understand why so many people complain. The story is great even if it's kinda predictable. It's a perfect mix between horror and thrill. Definitely worth a watch
