Wasting Ludacris' skills The directors might as well spend weekends remixing videos of speeches on C-SPAN. No sooner did they espy the cool script, than both directors set out to create this movie with something of condescending scorn. Wasting Ludacris' skills and poor Gerrard Butler, who spent the entire film literally fighting to save his career. Among the notable highlights was Butler drinking liquor then commencing to take an unabashed piss into a futuristic truck. A cynical evaluation of videogame culture, virtual sex and cartoon violence filmed with urgent commercial farce. The directors were slapping high fives at a laughable elevated new school Super Mario Brother's plot enmeshed with zeitgeist themes, null character development and a phalanx of irony and cynism devoid of pedantry. Don't look for verisimilitude between saturated zombie pixels. The trailer was better than the movie. No sequel please. Expand

Mediocre at best. This movie shows promise, but a shaky camera work and grotesque scenes of people living through a fantasy world really soured this experience for me.

Its all boobs, blood, bullets and brainless. Ironically enough the only thing not "executed" in this sci-fi re-tread was the awesome concept of the script.

Michael C. Hall and Gerard Butler handle the material they're given effortlessly but there wasn't much for them to work with. John Leguizamo's character could've used more depth, but the same could be said for the rest of the cast. A worthy effort, but the averageness of this buries itself right to the core. All in all, i give it a "Meh." Expand

Well friends you don't have to wait any longer because Gamer is here! Gamer is another fast paced, gory (and sometimes pointless) action film written and directed by Mark Neveldine and Brain Taylor. You may recognize these guys from creating the insane Crank movies staring Jason Statham. Well it appears they only have one way of directing at the moment because Gamer is no different. With heightened colors, sounds, imagery, and a hand held camera, Gamer provides plenty of "what the hell?" moments for the audience.

Avildsen's "The Karate Kid": What do these two on-screen couples have in common? They both played air hockey. With the possible exception of skeeball, an air hockey table is about as antithetical to the sex-drenched and violent-riddled simulated-reality entertainments that one could possibly get. The Humanz play air hockey(and first generation coin-operated arcade video games); the Humanz are a non-violent guerrilla organization, a peace movement whose objective is to topple over the multi-media empire run by Ken Castle(Michael C. Hall). Trace(Allison Lohman), a prison guard turned liaison, brings Kable(Gerard Butler), a flesh and blood avatar, into the lair, into her tribe, who are, in essence, a bunch of twenty-first century hippies. "Gamer" refashions the eighties into the late-sixties through its cultural artifacts in the context of its hyper-violent successors. Coin-operated games such as Defender and Galaga look like pacifist objects compared to Society and Slayers. It's the difference between pot and black tar heroin. Ludacris is fine as the group's leader, but the filmmaker should have put some aging makeup on the rapper for the sake of gravitas, and make Humanz Brother somebody who actually played these comparatively non-violent games during its heyday; somebody who wouldn't treat these eighties relics as kitsch. The filmmaker doesn't take full advantage of this generational, and yes, ideological setting. By bringing Simon(Logan Lerman) into its fold, Humanz could have utilized the air hockey table as a deprogramming tool. During his first communique with Kable, the avatar reminds his desensitized controller that he's playing with a human life. The movie in my head has the gamer squaring off against Kable with a paddle. Expand

However, you have everything this movie has but better, if you have a good first person shooter video game, a good multi-player role playing game, (and high speed internet... If you catch my drift lol). Expand

"Gamer" was a very exciting movie , but too short to see, although there are fewer pornography, the action scenes were very brutal , but very low in the picture definition.

It looked like Crank (2006) but less low budget. The sound was pretty good. It mostly sounded energetic and good but I thought there were some dynamic range issues. It sounded like a cinema mix where they can have quiet and loud scenes but that doesn't work so well at home. I found myself changing the volume between action and story scenes. It was like Crank (2006) but trying to be serious. It mostly worked. There were some really dry areas. The action was pretty cool. The ending too was an interesting story. The main bad guy was cool. Somehow the whole thing didn't really work and was a touch boring. It was nowhere near as memorable as The Matrix (1999). It had the right elements but somehow it didn't work that well. Expand
