Soldiers in training for fighting in Vietnam, tough boot camp & drill Sergeant, some go to war, some don't.
Stanley Kubrick's powerful Vietnam fest that I'd not seen since it came out in the late 80s.
It is very much a film split into two parts starting with the new recruits in the boot camp being ferociously barked at by the brilliant R. Lee Ermey as Sergeant Hartman. A great turn too by a young Vincent D'Onofrio as the blundering Private Pyle.
The second half of the film sees Matthew Modine's character go into the action in Vietnam & I think it loses a bit of steam here.
It is well written, the action scenes with the sniper are intense but it doesn't really go anywhere.
Mention also for the great soundtrack featuring the Bird is the Word & Woolley Bully!

He kept calling them degrading names such as sluts, pussies et. al. But then as the movie progresses on, I was drawn to Private Pyle, who had an obvious bad case of A.D.D. Initially, I was quite irritated of him with his clumsiness and slow pick up abilities to their unforgiving trainor. Due to Pyle's excess weight which obviously made him unable to keep up with the harsh physical rigors of training, he was kept from eating sweets and the teacher found out how Pyle caped a doughnut. He was made to eat it infront of his classmates while they were punished for him. Everytime he f...ed up, it was his classmates who paid for it. He was beaten with bricks [Ed: Soap, actually] while he was prevented from making a sound by his co-trainees when they got fed up of him. The only one who used to bear with him by necessity, Private Joker, didn't do anything about it. After it, Pyle cried like a child bullied in a kindergarden yard. And it was my first time to really sympathize with a character, I bawled like a baby too. I was just so moved how nobody stood up for him. It's been two days since I've watched FMJ, but the face of Pyle keeps haunting me. The cinematography of the film and the plot when they got to 'Nam sucks big time, but kudos to Kubrick for tugging my cynical heart. It's kinda new for me to be troubled by a film character, and for that, good job Kubrick. Expand

It shows us how these guys actually went through hell to become Marines and how they are put under so much stress and pressure. And definitely, if it was a successful movie, it would be the best war movie in the history of cinema. But the film does not match the logic of Kubrick's filmmaking and the director's subconscious. The logic of Kubrick's filmmaking is not that, for example, The camera is in favor of the soldier at the beginning of the film, or that it condemns such militarism. This type of narration is definitely simplistic. Maybe my idea also agrees with the director's point of view, but because it is not completely realistic in the movie , The movie is unsuccessful. However, it is a great movie, but it is not the greatest war movie in the history of cinema like "paths of Glory". Expand

Definitely not bad, but it's quality degrades as the movie goes on. It starts out as a vicious, surreal, and engagingly strange vision when it's in the boot camp stage of things, but when the characters go to war it starts to fall apart. You can definitely tell that it's a Kubrick movie. It has all of his signature style, such as his use of the wide angle lens and backwards moving cameras. But this movie can't escape its second half. Its second half feels empty and lifeless. It also doesn't help that it ends on an anti climactic note. It starts out feeling like it's going to be something epic, but ends being contrived, and forgettable, and therefore Kubrick's vision loses most of its power. Expand

Full Metal Jacket is a harrowing, violent and foul-mouthed film, yet it is superbly done. True, one or two parts may lack tropical realism, but the atmosphere the film creates is extraordinary. The film looks excellent with skillful cinematography. The script is very well crafted and does have a sense of realism, while the story is compelling with the transition from the training at the camp to the bombed Vietamnesse city smoothly done. I am with those who thinks the first half is better than the second, but that is not to say the second half isn't good, it is more than good, but the first half really was outstanding. Kubrick's direction as always is superb, as is the acting especially Lee Ermey and Vincent D'Onofrio. The only part of the film that still fails, in my opinion, is the section dealing with the news interviews of the soldiers. Meant to revolt us ... they simply come across as dry and excessive. The chapter on FMJ was interesting in pointing out certain scenes where I missed some or most of Kubrick's point. In the prostittue/theater scene, I realized that only in the widescreen version of the film could you see certain background visuals. At present FMJ is available in letterboxed format from Warner Bros. only in HD DVD, which is where the DVD technology is headed. They (Congress is included in "they.") want us to start all over again in both the player and disc. It's really unfair. The picture is much better, but, using FMJ as an example, I've bought it in VHS, then DVD, then again in 5.1 SS DVD, and would buy it again in letterboxed format, but switching to a new DVD format is asking too much. Apparently, we're missing a good bit in this modified version of the film. I've emailed WB's site, pleading for a widescreen release in the present DVD format and maybe they would if enough people showed an interest. This excellent, very intelligent and challenging film deserves release in its proper format without having to buy a $1,000.00 DVD player. Among comtemporary filmmakers, Kubrick was without peers and I would rank him above Welles, though I'm sure this comment will cause many film buffs to go ape. Expand

Stanley Kubrick's daunting two-part monolith also communicates on a gut level, yet it is the most deceptively simple work he has ever made--and even more resistant to easy interpretation than his 2001: A Space Odyssey. A friend of mine Stanley Kubrick's daunting two-part monolith also communicates on a gut level, yet it is the most deceptively simple work he has ever made--and even more resistant to easy interpretation than his 2001: A Space Odyssey. A friend of mine who was a Marine sergeant in the Tet offensive assures me that so many details are botched that the film is worthless as history; insofar as coscreenwriter Michael Herr has recently pointed out that Kubrick set out to make a certain kind of war film before he settled on either Vietnam or Gustav Hasford's novel The Short-Timers, I see no reason to doubt this testimony. But conventional realism seems so far from Kubrick's purposes that I can't dismiss the film for these infidelities either. I'm more inclined to ponder lead actor Matthew Modine's provocative suggestion that Kubrick's relationship to other commercial directors is analogous to the position of the early Cubists. Combining this sense of poetic abstraction with a subject as "hot" as Vietnam (or colonialism in general) is a risky and daring move, but I can't side with those who fault Kubrick for "coldness" simply because they can't anticipate or see through him (as they can with a genuine iceberg like Brian De Palma). It's been at least a quarter of a century since I've seen Kubrick's awkward first feature Fear and Desire (1953)--long since suppressed by Kubrick himself--but it is that touching and compassionate amateur film about young men at war, set in no particular place or time, that Full Metal Jacket evoked for me, refined, perfected, and chiseled to such a fine point that it fully expresses what the earlier film only implied. The vision may be hard as nails, but it is one without villains or other easy bromides. Expand

Kubrick uses unsettling humour here to test our limits and although a lot of us don't want to laugh at the thought of soldiers-in-training being abused and being referred to as maggots we simply cannot help ourselves as R. Lee Ermey seems to make it look acceptable with his outstanding performance. After the shock at the end of bootcamp, the film progresses straight to the Vietnam war with those soldiers now in the thick of the action; although the result of this is rather disappointing. The cast here is faultless but the action and the imagination that we have to come to love of Kubrick is not here in full stretch and although there are still moments of greatness it doesn't come close to the first half. The ending of this film makes up for the rest of the half however and really is thought provoking stuff. This could've been Kubrick's best but unfortunately cannot add up to the greatness of the director's previous works such as A Clockwork Orange or 2001. Still worth a watch however and is still one of the best films in the war movie genre if not the best. Expand

Sorry, translation Italian - English mechanics.

Song Huong the perfume river /

The work of Stanley Kubrick cast the viewer, inevitably and fortunately I add, some really old-time, real, proactive, without obfuscation and if I add dynamite from all points of view, I do not think being away from his "mind". In Full Metal Jacket, the narrative is strong, subversive, terrorist, violent, intimidating, "forces", "involving" and "start" sensory experiences in a mental process immediate and concrete. And 'with these realities that man, master and prey of their senses must necessarily be measured. E ', the same man who loses his gender-biased to rise and transmigrate to the Subject / History - The protagonist / narrator. So I understand.

Kubrick does not like to present itself often, is the 1980 Shining, Full Metal Jacket in 1987. Seven years, seven long years, but why? Because, probably, the "Monolith" needs time to add a new / true piece movie universe. I like to think that all of Kubrick's work, has pledged to defend a eusociality pestered with micro / macro economic Powers / politicians.

The film.

The instructor Gerheim protagonist of the novel "The Short-Timers" by Gustav Hasford referenced Kubrick, is transformed into the fearsome Sergeant Hartman Ronald Lee Ermey /. Who Hartman? Remember the '"I Want You for U.S. Army?" With the index pointing Uncle Sam? Well, Hartman is the son of that idea degenerated. (Hartman who are out there?) It 'a military instructor was born to destroy the human personality with appurtenances. It 'so good as to become a victim of its own "royalties".

Following Pyle will make a wonderful essay by the lessons learned from Hartman. And 'assisted in this performance by the famous 7.62 caliber Full Metal Jacket!

In the second part of the film is to tell the soldier Joker mistakes / horrors of an army in disarray. Many scenes are strong and many truths still shrouded in mystery / So, Kubrick offers his reflections to the public and it does work pouring in severity, technicality, fussiness.

How much did the fight against communism? I do not know. One thing I know. Many soldiers could not tell the Song Huong the perfume river / as many children of the same bank of the river have not yet achieved.

Luckiness!

Though, this one is certainly brutal in many different ways as it did a great job developing its characters. Many war films go for action rather than character development, but here, we got a bit of both and really became connected to the soldiers. This connection made the events here all the more tragic and hard to watch. The acting here is great, especially from R. Lee Ermey, who really steals the show. Stanley Kubrick's direction is fabolous as expected as well. The first half here is also far superior to the second half, in large part thanks to Ermey, but really, all of the events in the first half are much better presented than the second half, which at times, can be a little odd in the way things occur. But, the second half is still quite good, even if a little bit of a drop off from the perfect first half. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stanley Kubrick created another classic masterpiece and created the impressive characters Pyle and Drill Instructor Hartman (with equally incredible performances from Vincent D'Onofrio and R Lee Ermey respectively, with the latter ad-libbing most of his dialogue). However once these two characters are killed off halfway through the movie, the second act fails to live up to the brilliance of the first half (though this is common in most Vietnam/American war films), though its still an enjoyable, albeit dark, experience. Whereas the first stage explained how young men lost their humanity and succumbed to brutality, their struggle in Hue was a bit of an irony as they, in spite of superior equipment and manpower, managed to take down just one little 12-year-old-like Vietnamese female sniper only after suffering three fatal casualties. I consider this film an epic anti-war classic revealing the truth about the U.S Army behind the glamour of the fame as world's strongest combat force Expand

Full Metal Jacket is one of Stanley Kubrick's best. After seeing enough of his movies, I could say it was the average Stanley Kubrick movie, because most of them are phenomenal.

From The Killing to Eyes Wide Shut Stanley Kubrick is one filmmaker which everybody can trust for all his iconic vision and visuals and Full Metal Jacket is one of those book adaptations of Vietnam War that do go well with his iconic cinematography.

The movie follows the journey of a marine nicknamed Private Joker through Vietnam, starting in boot camp and eventually ending up in the war.
The first half of the film is set in boot camp and is amazing, one of the reasons for that being the drill instructor. Apparently, the actor who portrayed him used to do drill instructing himself so he was just left to say what he wanted to say as he knews what one would say in a real situation. This adds a sense of realism to it and that is one of the main things I like about this film- it feels very realistic and feels like you're experiencing war with them. Private Pyle was very well portrayed and his journey through boot camp is very engaging and goes places you probably wouldn't expect at times. Matthew Modine was also good as Joker, with his charisma, courageousness and relatability as a character.
The grittiness of war is displayed really well, in particular in the boot camp. You see that the marines don't get to have their say and are treated like animals. Private Pyle's character shows perfectly how all of this can affect someone.
The second half of the film is Joker when he is actually in the war. The quality does definitely drop here and I thought the pacing was a little off at times and it also got quite dull sometimes but it was still entertaining and the final act was very gripping and I really enjoyed it; it was constantly tense and if you watch it you'll probably see what I mean.
Upon first viewing, I was quite confused as to all of the events in the second half linked together and how they were relevant to the first half but now that I've gone back over the story I understand it now and I appreciate it more now.
As I stated earlier, I love how the film feels very realistic and the reason it feels like this is for the great characters I believe. Also mentioned earlier, it makes you feel like you're experiencing these events with them.
Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. The first half was absolutely amazing and while the quality did drop in the second half, it was still enjoyable with a great final act and the performances for the drill instructor and Private Pyle are great. Joker is also a good main character to root for.

Full Metal Jacket

Just like The Clockwork Orange, it takes too much time to prove a point and even though it is finely detailed and explicitly executed the journey for around 2 hours just doesn't seem worthy at the end. Stanley Kubrick's smart adaptation and perfect execution works on its level and won't disappoint the fans but fails to deliver anything beyond that as the mere far fetched idea fades off slowly before one's eyes where even lousy editing too, becomes responsible. Matthew Modine at the centre of it pulls it off swiftly and smoothly but is overpowered by a stunning performance by Vincent D'Onofrio despite of just being a supportive character. Full Metal Jacket resonates too much with The Clockwork Orange as it raises similar questions, offers enough doubts and thrills which becomes redundant at a certain point and as always lacks better editing.

Directed by Stanley Kubrick, its full of violence and shocking scenes, as the director likes. However, in this particular case, violence is welcome, showing us the inhumanity of war, very clear and explicit, from the brutal recruiting of the Marines to the crudeness of the battlefield. It's hard to watch this movie, but this, combined with raw and intense realism, makes the film truly unforgettable. However, this movie is too much like "Apocalypse Now". Coppola's film has the same message, the same environment, the same violence and event a very close soundtrack. It's impossible not to observe this similarities without consider how much this film could be more original and is not. Okay, the early scenes, in the military recruit, are a good addition to the film and a good differential, but it's not enough. It even seems that Kubrick simply wanted to do a remake of "Apocalypse Now"... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A great war film in two very different halves. The first half (I'd give a 9 or 10) took me back to boot camp like no other piece of media. Kubrick is masterful here in capturing the feel. R. Lee Ermey's Drill Instructor is brilliant (the only flaw in his performance is that he is, somehow, too likeable (Drill Instructors should have zero likeability)). Here's the spoiler. Your experience in half two will be changed if you know ahead of time that it's random. The events of war seem random, so the movie conveys that accurately. The problem is that if you expect a structured narrative that builds in clever ways, you will be disappointed. So as cinematic execution, excellent; as cinematic experience, a let down. Expand

A great movie that I recommend to anyone that is into learning about the military or the Vietnam War. It's a movie that I've kept coming back to every now and again and I still feel the same emotions as I did watching that movie the first time and times after that. The shock, feeling of pity for people like Pyle, the consequences and treatment of the Vietnamese by the Americans and even their own people. Every war and war movie (such as Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, Hacksaw Ridge) is made to remember those who served and gave their lives on the frontlines, because no matter if they come back dead or alive, they are no longer the person they used to be even if we don't see a difference. Lee Ermey. This isn't Kubrick's best movie, or even his best war movie, but it's definitely a memorable look at the horrors of war. "Full Metal Jacket" is Kubrick's deepest exploration of the duality of man, with the movie divided into two halves in order to demonstrate humanity's contradictory nature. The first half, which focuses on boot camp training, is by far the best. It has the finest performances, cinematography, and pacing in the entire movie. The second half is still really good, but it suffers from unsympathetic main characters and a sometimes unfocused story. But despite these flaws the second half is one of the most entertaining and shocking depictions of war ever put on film. The climax in particular is truly amazing with its intense, horrific portrayal of a futile conflict. "Full Metal Jacket" isn't the best movie about the Vietnam War (that would be "Apocalypse Now"), but it's still a must-see. 9/10. Expand

TheFull Metal Jacket checks out as my favorite Kubrick film, even though I certainly don't think its the "best", and lacks many of the classic Kubrick camera ploys. But 2 brilliant standalone halves form a coherent and captivating whole. The drill sergeant is one of the best casting decisions in movie history (and a very interesting backstory at that). His lines are delivered rapidly & immaculately by the actor, who wasn't even an actor before this movie, and leaves us with no doubt about the violence as sexual release ethos which drives so much of what drowns us in this world. Matthew Modine in the main role also a perfect casting choice, who makes the "duality of man" sarcasm credible, a difficult feat. Absent a few short sequences, you don't feel the same awe of the photography as is normally the case with Kubrick, but he did make war (and training for war) feel incredibly personal. The chaos we normally see in war movies adds to "realism", but reduces our hold on the characters' POV. Here, Kubrick wisely downsizes the number of soldiers visible in each sequence, which helps us feel the pulsating fear of impending (and needless) death. Expand

Ok now I’m going to say it right now I had high hopes for this movie saying it was a masterpiece and that R Lee Ermey’s performance is amazing, well THEY GOT HALF OF THAT RIGHT. The part they got right was R Lee Ermey’s performance because oh my god, starting at the 2 minute mark until the 45 minute mark this movie was a masterpiece and it was all because of him, I know it wasn’t supposed to be funny but it is because the **** that comes out of his mouth is crazy. If you want to really know just look up the first 6 minutes of the film. Now after that the film just nose dives in quality big time. First of all it’s when after a scene that is supposed to be dramatic and stuff when they cut to the next scene the people making the movie decide to put happy fun time music, WHY and it’s not just one time it happens multiple times and it’s not like they don’t have sad music, because at the end they play sad music and at that scene you actually feel the emotion of the scene like your supposed to. But that doesn’t matter when most of the scenes just drag I even went in my head and said out loud that is when they should have started the scene that’s when they should have cut the scene, but no they make it go on and on with characters I don’t care for. Overall I had so much hype for this movie but it ended up being bad, if it wasn’t for R Lee Ermey’s performance I would have given this movie a toilet paper rating but I’m not. Ranking Bad. Expand
