I enjoyed the animation and some of the gags were genuinely funny. I also appreciated the effort to add more lore to the world of "Frozen" to be acted on in future installments. However, the movie falters on things that made the original so popular - the characters are confusing, the songs are underwhelming, and the story itself is muddled and unfocused. Any one of these on their own would have been bad enough but altogether I can't ignore the misses. Elsa and Anna's relationship is the focus again and everything else feels underdeveloped and rife with plot holes. I still enjoy the movie but I will admit it makes me antsy for the inevitable Frozen III, where hopefully Disney enacts some better quality control.

Positives:
+ upgraded visuals and animation
+ Elsa and Anna's relationship is complex
+ exploring Elsa's powers is fun and intriguing
+ a couple interesting songs
+ Olaf is genuinely funny

Negatives:
- plot is muddled and uneven
- less memorable songs
- Kristoff's characterization/arc/song are all bafflingly dumb
- Anna's character is less focused, seemingly contrary to the first movie
- the story teeters dangerously close to some cringeworthy "noble savage" and "white savior" tropes

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed the first film, but I found the sequel to be a big disappointment. The whole story about the elements doesn't make a lot of sense and feels very contrived. It's like they were making it up as they went along. The whole "water has a memory" is just an excuse for them to portray memories as snow sculptures, as it's easier to show that way. The kingdom of Arendelle seems to be a little port with 300 people living in it. There's no villain to speak of. With Elsa we have another story about her self-indulgently running off to find herself, and yet again Anna is the one running behind trying to fix everything. Kristoff basically has a cameo role, and I didn't like the way his main arc ended with him marrying Anna, when Anna was clearly indifferent to him. I also feel it undermines the first film's message about true love not having to always be about romantic love. Olaf is Olaf. Graphics are great and there are some some good songs here, but overall for me this reminds me of The Lion King and Aladdin - two great Disney films that had poor sequels that were best forgotten. I just watched this show and can't remember a tune, much less hum one. Nobody ever seemed in jeopardy and was there even an antagonist?

Frozen 1 was a 9 or 10, even not caring anything about it in advance. This... pretty lame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's even more hollow in story than the first. There are a whole bunch of pointless, boring songs one after another that I started to skip skim though. Story wise barely anything's happening and even that's boring. The characters remain 1 dimensional, except Kristoff who remains 0D. Expand

6 years ago Disney released an animated film that made people go completely crazy.
Its success was somewhat unexpected because it was an original film with new characters in the Disney princesses repertoire but it worked great. Also the emblematic song was a massive hit even though I **** hated it.
I really didn't see anything remarkable in the film but with 1.29 Billion dollars raised at the box office Disney obviously knew they had gold in their hands and the sequel was inevitable. 6 years later it has finally arrived and it's clear this sequel was born for monetary reasons instead of narrative reasons.

Anyways that's not a bad thing, I've always said this is a business and it's perfectly understood and therefore Frozen II plays it safe. It doesn't necessarily deliver the same but obviously there would be no changes in the formula.
Maybe something that can bother a certain part of an audience unable to see something with another mentality has to do with the very own mentality of the film focused on current affairs.
The message of feminism and feminine empowerment is clear but at this point if people continue to believe they will see something else or that a film directed at a kid's audience doesn't need to deal with such themes, they're just deceiving themselves.

The songs just like in the original movie are the spine of the narrative but once again for me they didn't seem really interesting, although ''Into the Unknown'' is definitely the best in the repertoire and I personally liked it more than Let it Go.
But this is how Frozen works. The story this time is a bit messier but like in any musical the songs are how the characters express themselves better and this is how the film is made to work in a more suitable way.

I confess that Frozen wasn't the kind of film I like from Disney Animation but I know and I can recognize when there's quality and Frozen II despite its defects is a well made film.
Frankly I cannot say if it was able to recapture the tone of the first film because even though the original has certain superior elements, this one seemed more enjoyable to me.
I don't know, maybe I saw it with a different mindset, especially because of my lack of expectations but I repeat I liked it and there's quality to spare, nothing great but hey; it's more than fine and if you enjoyed the first one, then you will enjoy this one as well.

Unfortunately, the direction in which the characters were taken, combined with the somewhat lackluster plot made this film fall flat. Is it one of the, if not THE, best looking animated movies out there? Definitely! Their attention to detail is astonishing - with every environment, clothing, etc... crafted with utmost care. That alone, however, isn't enough to save the film for me, bringing the score to a 6/10. It's slightly above average, with incredible visuals and a sub-par plot. Expand

However, two things that are outstanding in the original, are the songs and score...Two things that, sadly, aren't as good here. There are twice the number of songs compared to the first one, but besides two really good songs, the rest of them, while not bad, feel uninspired, don't sound as epic and even feel forced. It seemed at times that characters started singing just because it's a Disney musical movie and not because it is essential to the plot like the original. There are some musical numbers that even feel pointless or like a lazy way to explain to the audience how the characters are feeling in the exact moment. The plot feels a bit better than the original in the sense that it doesn't have the same dumb twists or plot conveniences. However, that doesn't mean that the movie told a great story. I feel like the main conflict feels forced. In some way the movie reminded me of Finding Dory because of the way that the main conflict is established. It doesn't feel like a "logical next step" in the franchise. The story doesn't feel like the natural progression of what was established in the first movie. It doesn't leave a notorious impact in the franchise. If anything, this movie makes itself feel pointless. The new characters are forgettable and don't really play any significant role and the characters we know and love from the previous don't grow or have any arc! Elsa is still the same character in the end. She does learn some things about her past but it doesn't seem to affect her for some reason. Anna feels like the same character as how she was in the end of the first (I feel like her arc was completed already and the writers had no idea where to take her now) and other characters like Kristoff are just there and feel pointless. Olaf is much more annoying here than in the previous one. Sometimes he affects the tone of the movie and you could remove him from the plot and nothing will change and there's that salamander creature who's in the movie for absolutely no other reason than to sell toys...Because he's so cute, "awwww". The only thing that I feel it is superior to the original is the animation and the visual effects, but that's expected seeing how 3D animation evolves quickly. Overall, I don't think there isn't anything particularly bad nor anything outstanding. It is inferior to the original in almost every aspect and not even the songs are as good. What was the point of having twice the number of musical numbers if only two are actually memorable? Anyway, if you didn't like the original, this isn't any better, don't watch it. If you're a fan of the original, then...Go ahead. I think you'll enjoy it...

I definetly don't want this movie to be nominated for an Oscar but knowing how the Academy always nominates a Disney or Pixar Movie, then yeah, it will get a nomination, but this is far from being among the best animated films of the year.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ultimately, fantastic animation, above average music (nowhere close to the first), mediocre world building, and a sub-par story.

Much like a good portion of this movie, my feelings about it are bitter-sweet. Going into its predecessor with low expectations and getting a fantastic movie I was hoping that the sequel to such a shift for me could break through that sequel-curse barrier. I think it made cracks but got stock with not enough.

The music wasn't nearly as good. It has a chilling vocal as the driving story mechanism, but gets so overused. None of the numbers are catchy and there is simply too much Christoph songs.

The world building around the magic starts off interesting with elemental influence then Elsa is shown to be their connection/source/living god at this point. It felt forced and like the writers had no idea where they were going. Some cross between Irish/Native folklore, shamanism, and totemism. The ultimate source of Elsa's power is a gift because Elsa approved of Elsa's father's actions...wat. They could have dropped the whole source/5th element and the whole thing would have been much more cohesive.

The story and the twist is the same-old people who follow nature do no wrong and are betrayed. Way overdone and with nothing to indicate it should happen from what we see anywhere else in the movie. Very little expansion of Arundel except as token references or basic plot devices. Surprisingly Olaf was much more palatable and actually useful for expressing complex ideas (though in a joking fashion).

No matter how good it would end up being. With "Frozen II," however, this notion doesn't even really come into play, for things don't particularly measure up to the standards of Disney animated films in general, let alone the standards of a sequel to one of their biggest and most rabidly worshipped successes. Nothing really happens. No one really learns anything they didn't already know in the first film. No one really changes, for better or worse. There aren't even any material consequences for the characters to deal with at the end of the film -- just logistical ones. The songs struggle mightily to find anything interesting to do within the key that they're written in, ultimately leaving next to none of the actual pieces of music at the level of memorability that some of the predecessor's songs sat at ("Do You Want To Build A Snowman," "Let It Go," etc.) It's not a botch job by any stretch, but it is a definite departure in quality from the 2013 hit (which I wasn't even crazy about to begin with). I saw this movie in theaters this weekend and this movie lacks a lot of what made the first film as much of a powerhouse. Starting with the good... Though it’s not a bad movie for plot overall (though definitely flawed), as it continues the story shortly after the first film ended and while it dived deeper into the history of our beloved characters. This movie feels like a piece of art as it’s all about transformation when things are always changing and that is symbolic with the “lost woods” feel. Olaf provides great humor and Elsa/Anna/Kristoff provides character heart. I chuckled when the movie made fun of its itself with acknowledging Elsa’s “Let it Go” was too over played.

Now the bad... There’s only like 2 songs that are even decent and sadly even those two don’t hold up to any of the many hits from the first one. The music is a big loss with this sequel as it pretty much made the first movie like it did for Moana. Especially Kristoff’s painful 80s like montage song. Really! It was painful to watch. The story plot though being praised for suffers with how much we are just supposed to accept from water holding memory of the past and though being warned many times to not treading too far “or you’ll be drowned” our characters still don’t learn. Sadly, I was just ready for the movie to end so I could leave.

In terms of musical genre, Frozen 2 is balanced, if not perpetually gifting its audience what they expect.

Frozen 2

Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, the co-writers and directors, may not be able to convince everyone to hum along this time. Especially not the audience as large as they gathered previously. But it is not their fault. They went for a more mature and lighter yet equally moving version of the stereotypical Disney formula. Now, I have been experiencing these Disney films since the very beginning just like most of us. And it has worked every time if done properly. And I have always wondered how that "teamwork" aspect draws you in. Melts you down. And makes you laugh, happy with tears in your eyes. But now that I think about it and am out of the screen watching this mesmerizing second chapter of the Frozen, I feel that the "optimism" also partakes majorly on bombarding you with satisfaction that rains on your command. I say "your" for the emotion, at the end of the day, remains subjective. The makers offers you plenty of equation and relationship and range and situation to cave yourself in. That unfathomable, unfiltered optimism along with the prophecy that states, "It is not what it seems" are the hidden gems in the script that is pulsating way too strongly for any of the evil spirit to tone it down. There are moments, there is this core theme of the soundtrack that advances the storyline beautifully. And fortunately, the songs revolving around it and the climax justifying it, is the call, the tease of the Holiday season we all want. What I love about this franchise, is that it is never only about the lead character. I know we've had proper supporting characters before too, but none of them contributes so profoundly as they do here.

I saw it and enjoyed it in the theatre, I then hated it after all the hype and overexposureBefore I get to my thoughts on this sequel, let me briefly go over my thoughts on the first movie. My journey with Frozen is similar to many others. I saw it and enjoyed it in the theatre, I then hated it after all the hype and overexposure but I eventually came around to it again when I rewatched it last year. Do I think it has issues? For sure! Do I think it’s overrated? Yeah, kinda! Do I not like it? Of course not! It has good songs, great animation, great characters, some good comedy and a nice story with a good message. It feels like a classic Disney movie from the 90s, I can see why it’s so popular! As for my thoughts on the sequel, while I didn’t have a terrible time watching it, it was not as good as the first movie when it had the potential to be so much better. I was hyped when I saw the trailers, it looked really epic, but unfortunately I don’t think it really came together in the end. For starters, the story is WAY too complicated! It’s super exposition-heavy and I actually had a hard time following it at times! I have no idea how kids are supposed to follow it! It throws a lot of lore and history and mystery and conspiracy at you and it was just too much. It’s a fairy tale, not Avatar: The Last Airbender! It doesn’t need to be this complicated! The story is also WAY too fast-paced! It reminded me of The Rise of Skywalker. Yes. It’s that bad. It barely gives you any time to breathe and doesn’t give the characters a lot of time to interact. Most of the time, the main characters from the last movie are separated on their own little adventures. The only two characters that actually stay together through the whole movie are Anna and Olaf! This movie also introduces some new characters that are barely in it, but they’re set up like they’re supposed to be major characters! I don’t know why they would do that, it feels like a waste of time. Oh yeah, the movie’s, like, 100 minutes long! I feel like some of it could’ve been cut down. Like Olaf. He’s really annoying in this. I do have one more major issue with this movie and that’s the ending. Without giving anything away, I thought it was awful. It makes little sense, it feels rushed, it kinda makes the whole movie pointless and it turns the movie into a borderline white saviour story. Wasn’t a fan. You’ll see what I mean if you see the movie. I also predicted the plot twist pertaining to the closest thing this movie has to a villain, but it is a kids movie so I think I can forgive that. It just seems a little odd that that was one of the only predictable parts while everything else was so convoluted. Overall, while there were a lot of things that I did enjoy, like the songs, the voice acting, some of the comedy and the breathtakingly gorgeous animation, the story is just such a mess that I really can’t say this is a good movie. It’s not a terrible movie by any means, despite how I make it sound, but it’s certainly not very good. It’s okay. The story of the first movie was so simple, with an overarching theme and message of familial love. This movie is too overly complicated and I couldn’t tell you what the message or the theme even is. Is it about colonialism? Chosen Ones? Man vs. Nature? Familial love again? It has a lot of ideas but none of them are really fleshed out very well. I don’t know what we as an audience are supposed to learn or what the characters learned. Like I said, the whole movie feels kinda pointless. I feel like this could’ve been an hour-long Disney+ special or something, not the sequel to the former highest-grossing animated film of all-time! Overall, if you’re a die-hard Disney fan or your kids REALLY want to see it, give it a watch. It’s on Disney+. Otherwise, just rewatch the first movie. Very disappointing. Expand

That was probably the most mind-blowingBefore we get to the review, I need to mention the fact that, apparently, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Brad Bird (all Pixar veterans) were credited as “Special Thanks” for helping with the story. That was probably the most mind-blowing thing about Frozen II, if not the best mindfork of 2019.

Besides that, Frozen II is just fine. The more violent alternative to Joker (per Vue Cinemas) isn’t great, or bad, but it’s just a big old “Mah”. Elsa is on a quest to discover the truth about Arendelle while other characters wander around doing...Something (!) in 2019’s Animated (and less good) equivalent of Godzilla King Of The Monsters.
Not to say that it’s necessarily terrible since visually it’s beautiful, from water shenanigans to the fire of a candle looking just like a real candle. And whenever it was Elsa doing something, that’s where the story continues, since again, she’s on the quest to find out the origin of her powers and the truth about Arendelle. And Olaf (who’s still my favorite part of the first movie) sadly gets reduced to the annoying popular secondary character, but not fully, as he was cackling me a lot in several moments, alongside a cute song about getting older.
And whoever wanted to make sure Lost In The Woods was a terrible 80’s/90’s Music Video needs a promotion. So far, Disney is doing great for brilliant WTF Moments in Animation.
And again, Stanton, Docter and Bird’s involvement for the story was sweet…
But at the same time, it felt desperate for me. Yeah yeah, directors learning how to expand the ante, but it was also Disney trying so goddamn hard to make a better sequel to the first Frozen. Kudos for the decision, but really didn’t pay off well in the end.
When it was Anna and Kristoff doing stuff, that’s where it felt like a “STOP” sign would smack me in the face, since we’re reduced to Anna just staying with Elsa during the grand quest or Kristoff not doing so well on trying to ask her to marry him, alongside “funny” schtick.
The musical parts kind of need to calm down….really calm down. I get that they love making musical scenes in Animated movies (and they are, indeed, great. Especially Into the Unknown), but Jesus Christ. And with Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez being credited as Writers, it really feels like execs asking for 1000 songs in this movie, putting it to an Olaf’s Frozen Adventure problem, where the story could’ve been all the greater had it not been for the overabundance of music overshadowing the main story.
And this may be something only Home Theater Buffs may get, but even in theaters, it’s starting to feel Disney’s horrible involvement in making quality Audio Mixes even in 5.1 Theaters. Like, show some respect, and hire better mixers than whoever is farting these abominations, both in theaters and Blu-Ray. But then again, what mattered to me the most, was that Olaf was funny and the kids in my theater had the greatest time, so that may be enough for me to give Frozen II additional points. Not a dreadful sequel, but maybe low down your expectation a wee bit.

I'm 100% in agreement with one of the professional reviewers who stated this most certainly was nothing more than a handful of musical breaks and pre-imagined visuals cobbled together at the last moment to get something into theaters for the holidays. This was one of the worst cash grabs I've ever seen. Expand

Frozen 2 dives into the mystery and origin of the main characters, which is something the audience can really get into. WhatFrozen 2 dives into the mystery and origin of the main characters, which is something the audience can really get into. The jokes are plentiful, and Olaf really delivers great comedy in just about every conversation he’s involved in. What hurts the film is the abundance of forgettable songs crammed in At every turn. The songs in this film were emotional, and fitting to the theme of the situation, but they certainly won’t be songs you’ll be singing aloud in your car, or hear young kids bellow for years to come. There is no “Let It Go” or “Love Is An Open Door” level song here. Aside from musical complaints and rushed ending, it’s hard to feel happy with how the characters are left at the end of the film. Sadly, this seems to follow the same curse as other “#2” Disney sequels. Not bad, but not great. Hopefully a third film can come in and bring things back.

Overall, an enjoyable film. It’s just surprising that Disney didn’t put a bit more effort into such a flagship franchise to ensure it would resonate for another half decade like the first film.

I actually thought the first one was decent, but this unbarable sequel is nothing but a cheap cash-grab. The story is awful, the songs are great but not as great as the first movie's. This movie could've been so much better. Look at some of the deleted songs and scenes, Cristoff had an actual story arc, but the writers decided not to go trought with it and make Cristoff a completley pointless character.
its makes me so upset to see this movie fail so badly at telling even a decent story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, here we have what could've been a masterpiece held back by its goat sh*t writing. What did I like about Frozen 2? Well, the animation was astounding. This is by far the best looking animated movie I've ever seen. The songs, in my opinion, were a big step up from the first Frozen. I actually liked multiple characters this time and not just somewhat Olaf. And that's where the praise stops. Now, what's bad about Frozen 2? As I mentioned, it's writing. The story doesn't really feel like it has much of a conflict, which can work if done right. It also doesn’t really have a villain, which I'd definitely say is a step up from Frozen 1's 47,000,000 different villains it loved switching between. I guess it has some form of antagonist with that dam, but I'm not so sure on that one. And the entire idea of the story, being called upon to go on a journey to learn about the past, isn't a bad idea. So how did Disney of all people f*ck it up so badly? They make it so Elsa hears some random voice in the middle of the night that calls her to abandon her friends (who follow her anyway) and her kingdom to go on some crazy adventure because she wants to follow a voice that may have just been a crazy hallucination. Not just that, oh no. You see, they have four elemental spirits, water, fire, earth, and wind (Avatar: The Last Airbender much?). But then they say there's a fifth elemental spirit. And you wanna guess who it f*cking is? ELSA OF COURSE! Yeah, the fifth element is ICE. F*CKING ICE. LITERALLY JUST WATER BUT FROZEN IS THE ELEMENT THAT BINDS THEM ALL TOGETHER. HOW DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE?! Ok, water and air I guess I can understand. Ice is just frozen water and air can be cold. Earth, maybe. But fire? No. No, no, no, no, HELL no. I don't get that one even a little. Ok, got that rant out of my system. Overall, Frozen 2 could've been one of the best animated movies ever, but is held back by its unbelievably bad writing. Expand

On the other hand, this movie is a terrible sequel to the first and tries too hard to establish and solve mysteries with little effect. There's no real feeling of stakes or sacrifice like in the first movie and while the animation is incredible I wish the script and plot had the same amount of time put into them. Expand

I didn't care for the first frozen that much, mostly because of the goddamn music!! Forzen 2 on the other hand is evan lamer. It's just so predictable and childish. I dont hate it, but I would not give damn if it fails at the box office. Moving on.

Messy and a lot of unnecessary subplots due to the overabundance of characters. Barely any plot.

The first one was a pretty great Disney movie. But I didn't like the story of this one, although they hit on some nice topics. And the movie looks overall pretty good.

If i was a kid i would´ve given it a solid 9, but as an adult it´s a solid 7. You should expect no more than a few funny moments and a couple catchy songs that your kids will be singing for at least a year.

Film was okay. It didn't match the level of first part. Some scenes were boring and some were not even needed, dialogues were repetitive (also not catchy), songs were also not so good. Except 2-3 scenes and animation, nothing was good in this movie.

i found the conflict to be REALLY good, but looking at the solution or the end to the story was really horrible and did not look too well for me.

the graphics, are good.. but i would rather be focusing on the storyline here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film tries to live up to the legacy carved out by it's predecessor, but at that end the film ultimately falls flat. It's not like this movie doesn't know what a is needed inside of a good sequel, however the execution leaves much to be desired. The main plot of the film revolves around Elsa and friends venturing off into the unknown to find the source of a voice calling out to her and discover the mysteries of Arendelle's past, which not going to lie is a solid set up for this movie. However this movie's major issue is that it focuses almost exclusively on Elsa giving the supporting cast next to nothing of significance to do. So for the majority of this films runtime our cast is separated wondering through an enchanted forest trying to find the others. The film seems to focus on the theme that no matter what in life changes love will always stay the same, which is a heart warming message, however in classic children's film fashion, their seems to be no negative consequences by the end of the film. Overall this movie is the stark opposite of it's bright color pallet 5/10. Expand
