Halloween is suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat thrilling. Friday The 13th seems to have none of that. It loses a lot in never showing you anything of the killer, besides a hand at the beginning, until the big reveal. Another major issue is that while Halloween had a foreboding killer with seemingly no motive, Friday The 13th presents their killer the same way, until the big reveal, where we are told the backstory and "reasoning" for all of the horror. Because of this "hidden" backstory, the opening sequence seems confusing and pointless, as does much of the film. The combination of never showing the killer and trying to have an explanatory backstory really takes most of what make Halloween so good away from this film. What's left is a group of characters you don't care about and a series of fairly uncreative deaths. It's amazing that this film started such a huge franchise and led to the birth of one of the most iconic horror characters of all time. Expand

Sure the kills are awesome and Betsy Palmer’s spine chilling performance as Pamela Voorhees is great, but everything else is just an hour and a half of sex-driven teens running around and slowly, and I mean dreadfully slowly being picked off one by one by a murderer. Maybe back then it was horrifying to watch, but nowadays it's just one of those movies that you put on your TV, but don't really pay too much attention to anything besides the kills and the climax. Where the film shines is the score and the look of the film, both of which work really well to set up the tension as our characters get picked off one by one. Friday the 13th (1980) is a very simplistic film of a bunch of horny teenagers being eliminated one by one, but despite it's some pointless scenes, the series has a very good opening to a horror icon that would spread into popular culture, starting with this viscerally stunning, suspenseful movie. It's a cult icon, it has loyal fans, but it's nothing special, although it has given birth to a terrible franchise, which has haunted the cinema since this time. This movie does not have any difference from other camping slasher movies: an haunted camp, an ancient crime, a murderer with a large knife and a mask, naughty teenagers almost asking to be murdered in the bloodiest ways... everything is quite common in slasher films. The victims deserve to die, the murderer scares no one and there is not much mystery here. The cast is no use talking because it is poor and miserable. It's a classic? Maybe... but it's a bad film and I would not regret if it never existed. Expand

It's not particularly scary, but there's a great sense of tension throughout. With its gory kills and cool setting it is easy to see why this one is so beloved. It's a great film. However age hasn't been kind to it thanks to the shear number of films that copied many elements from it. If you haven't seen it yet then be warned, it may feel cliche. However that's not really this movies fault. It was just so popular that so many slasher films have copied it over the years. The only real issue it has is that it's just not that scary. However that didn't stop me from enjoying it, and any horror movie fan who hasn't seen it really should. It's one that still impresses today. My total score for the film is an 8.3/10. Expand

Sinopsis:

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

This review is for the unrated cut which has a touch more glorious Savini gore. It's crazy to think how this franchise started. Because when most of us think of it, we refer to the incomparable Hockey mask clad Jason Voorhees whose only in the movie a smidge and not in the form we most know him. The killer is Mrs. Voorhees played amazingly by Betsy Palmer. As we all know she targets the group of counselors trying to reopen the camp blaming them for the death of her son and judging them with brimstone and fire morals. She slices and dices them in increasingly impressive ways from sexy Kevin Bacons throat piercing to his girlfriend getting an axe in the face and so much more. It all culminates with her glorious beheading and one of the best jump scare endings of all time, if not the best. Revisiting it all these years later it's easy to see the film's many imperfections but also see why it spawned a 12 film franchise with a 13th hopefully on the way. It's formula of suspenseful atmosphere and gruesome quick kills is something almost every horror film has replicated in various degrees, some better and some worse. Bit one thing is absolutely certain to me the film us deservedly and undoubtedly a genre classic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow....this movie was HORRIBLE. It is shockingly outdated with corny music and TERRIBLE acting especially from the annoying lead actress and the actress who played Jason’s mom. Their over-the-top performances were so annoying. I can’t believe this is the teen horror movie many people STILL consider a classic. I was so disappointed when I watched this for the very first time on TV this month.
This movie aged HORRIBLY! It’s not even scary. This is just another one of those overrated, outdated horror film classics like Psycho (1960), The Shining, and Halloween (1978). The characters in this film are so one-dimensional that their names aren’t even important. And where the hell was Jason Vorhees in the third act? Why wasn’t he the one trying to kill that annoying, dumb, blonde ****
Why did Jason’s annoying, fat, and ugly **** mother end up being the final antagonist in the first film? Where the hell was he when this movie desperately needed him? If he’s marketed on the posters wearing a hockey mask then why didn’t I see that in the first movie? The stupid, annoying, blonde **** made so many stupid decisions in the final battle with Jason’s mom that I honestly didn’t care whether she was going to die or not. The corny music in the final battle wasn’t helping either and was just the icing on the **** cake.
That final fight was wack! I honestly enjoyed Freddy vs. Jason a lot more than this outdated, cheesy 80s horror B-movie. At least that teen horror B-movie was a fun guilty pleasure unlike this outdated, corny, terribly acted teen horror movie. It wasn’t even a fun cheesy B-movie, it was a boring cheesy B-movie. This film does NOT hold up at all.

But personally, it seems to me that Friday the 13th cannot be watched as one movie, you need to watch sequels right away. In general, Friday the 13th for 1980 was not bad. But it's inferior in everything as the opening film that Carpenter's Halloween, that A Nightmare on Elm Street. However, it's more interesting than Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Expand

First Nightmare movie - top notch. First Halloween movie - top notch. First Evil Dead movie - top notch. First Friday the 13th - .... bleh ..... I don't mean it's bad and **** but is totally rough. I find the Friday the 13th franchise to be most successful among the ones I mentioned, including Exorcist franchise, but it doesn't have anything so investing for me to be passionate about this franchise whatsoever. The first movies in the other franchises had something that kept me intrigued, even though the rest were mostly trash. .
.
Good : Betsy Palmer gives a very creepy and unsettling performance. She was the saving grace of the movie to some extent. The final twist in the end, seems a bit clichéd today, but wasn't so common back then (I think), anyways, it worked for me. Even though it gets unnecessarily loud sometimes, it works for a movie like this. And throughout the movie, it has the "point of view" style of telling the story, the kills in particular. It helps to build the suspense throughout the film, until the final twist in the end. And, the practical effects, holy **** They have not dated at all. The decapitations, the impaling, the axe to the face ..... they look very good. That's probably the biggest positive of this film. .
.
Mixed : A lot of kills happen off-screen. Some are just slitting the throat stuff, which isn't too exciting, but some were totally insane kills. I would've loved to see them. But again, this movie had very little to do. Showing all those kills would've meant a gore sequence after a gore sequence, rather than an actual film. That would've made me love this film even less. .
.
Bad : The biggest flaw of this film is that it doesn't feel exciting. The excitement is there, but when we get the "point of view" style things indicating a kill is going to take place. And, towards the end of the movie. Even the way they end it is stupid. When someone could've been killed easily, the person was just knocked down a couple of times before getting killed. And, the way they decided to end this film for good wasn't so appreciable at all, if they were to bring Jason Voorhees back in the second film. The screenplay was mediocre at best. The director could've done a better job. If only John Carpenter or Wes Craven directed this film, it would've been a little better to watch. The acting, except that of Palmer, looks really fake. The plot is really thin, and my main complaint won't be that. But, they could've made it more interesting and thrilling. The first Nightmare on Elm Street movie had no big, twisted and complicated plot. But it was damn good and exciting right from the beginning to the end (before the twist). It didn't have so much of a better script, it just had some creepy dialogues for Freddy, and may be some creepy imagery. But the majority of the credit for the film being good goes to the direction of Wes Craven, rather than his screenplay. So here, by the same rationale, I would blame the director for the movie being inferior to its contemporaries. The movie is like everything is normal, wait let's kill him/her and make it exciting for a brief period of time, and it's normal again. There are some pretty good jumpscares, especially the one involving Jason Voorhees. But the rest, even though they're good, they are so illogical and sometimes it's clear that it was just the screenwriter's convenience. None of the characters, except that played by Betsy Palmer, are interesting. The backstory of Jason was interesting but I don't think I would ever want to see a solo Jason story, unlike a Freddy's origin story. .
.
Conclusion : It's just an old film, people feel nostalgic about, and was the one which marked the beginning of perhaps the most successful horror franchise in the history of American cinema. Hence, it's a "classic". If you haven't seen it till date, and think it's one of the best old films that got everything right, it's not a movie like that. .

People go to see these movies for the kills (Again Part 2, and 3 did better). What people forget Friday the 13th comes from the Golden Age of slasher films and set the bar for Future parts of the franchise. It not for everyone, but if you get a chance give it a watch. Expand

This '80s atmosphere is simply gorgeous. Well, let's keep in mind that it is another time because (I hope that) no trucker would have the audacity to touch a young girl's buttocks to "help" her get into his truck. The scenario is interesting. I found Annie really attaching, really cute in her naive way. Other main characters are not always interesting nor that attractive but they all bring something to the movie in their own way. Overall acting is great excepted for the scenes in which characters have to face death. However we can really feel the despair and ineluctability growing as the movie goes on and on. Soundtrack and music makes everything really better.

The very end is really tricky, a bit confusing and doesn't seem like a true end, surely because there are eleven other movies coming after this one... Sound effects are okay but those weird breathing sounds we hear when the killer is near can quickly become unbearable. The sex scenes are a bit too present and represented according to me as it completely breaks the rhythm. The pace is weird and the movie takes a long time to start. If you manage to get over the intense boredom I think 'Friday the 13th' has more to offer than you think.

Solid classic horror movie. The acting wasn't particularly great but it's hard to be too critical of a movie that came out 40 years ago, 6.5/10.

Now for the things I did not like *most* of the kill sences like for example the first pair of kills the killer gets its just the girl in a cornier and screaming and then a blinding white light and title card and also a lot of the kills are just a stab to gut or just the character dissipering and there boys there 20 minutes later overall average film 5/10 2.5/5 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To say Friday the 13th had an impact on horror movies would be an understatement. I don’t know about you, but this is the first slasher movie I ever watched. I would always watch this movie before I would go to camp each summer I would watch Friday the 13th the night before I would leave. And yes, in the beginning of camp I would freak out about going to the campfire circles. LOL

PLOT

Alice (Adrienne King) as well as a group of counselors, led by owner Steve (Peter Brouwer) are fixing up and planning on reopening Camp Crystal Lake, which was closed twenty two years earlier because of horrible murders that occurred there. The locals warn them not to reopen that there is a blood curse, but they do not listen. Slowly, they are stalked and killed one by one by an unknown killer.

MY THOUGHTS

You’re doomed! You’re all doomed!-Crazy Ralph

As I mentioned before, this was my introduction to slasher movies. From that point I was a fan. So this movie will always have a soft spot in my heart for this reason.

Although this is a slasher movie, there are only 10 kills in this movie. For some reason I thought it would be a lot more. Most are off screen, or we see the build up to and the results afterwards. Though, one of the more famous kills is when Jack (Kevin Bacon) gets the arrow through the neck. Another kill is the one where Alice decapitates Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer). One of the main highlights of this movie is the special effects by Tom Savini. Overall, not bad for the era it was made.

Another highlight of the movie is the music. I like how they used music in the movie when the killer was present. I think that was a great idea from Harry Manfredini. Manfredini also came up with the sound “ki ki ki, ma ma ma”, based on the line “Kill her mommy!”.

As far as the acting and characters, I think the actors did a good job. I like all the characters to the point that when they die I feel bad for them. Not award winning acting but I think they did a good job. If I sympathize with the characters when they die, they did their job.

Overall, I enjoyed this movie and I will watch this movie at least once a year (especially on a Friday the 13th). Friday the 13th helped start the slasher trend that continues today.

The film made $39,754,601 on a budget of $550,000.
The MPAA told the producers of Friday of 13th to scale back on the gore for the sequel, since they regretted the amount of gore that had gotten through in the original (and the subsequent critical backlash).
After the film’s success, Adrienne King was stalked by an obsessed fan. Terrified, she asked that her role in Part 2 be as small as possible. She did not take any other roles or make convention appearances for almost 20 years after its release.
Bing Crosby’s son played in this movie as Bill (Harry Crosby).

The sound isn't that great and lacks definition but who cares as this is a great slasher film! It was strong enough to start a legacy but there is little here that the legacy is famous for. Reminiscent of Halloween (1978) but changes the formula to be more fun. It has kitsch value and cheap thrills. The gore is excellent, like really nasty. My favourite are the first four. The start of a franchise but it isn't the best in the series, greatness awaits… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is probably the essential B-movieish slasher. From today's point of view we can say it constantly borders on parody, but never quite becomes one. Unless you keep that in mind, you're gonna have a hard time watching it. People who never watch slashers probably think this is what slashes are like.

Even with this attitude in mind, some parts of Friday the 13th are off putting: music seems random at times, you always know who's next to die and pacing isn't compelling. Other stuff like the incompetence of the characters I would call a staple of the genre, so that's hardly a disadvantage.

Interestingly enough, the movie has a subtlety: after all is there anything supernatural about the killer? The general efficacy of murders and the lake scene strongly suggest there was a sort of supernatural evil beyond that crazy mama. On the other hand we really did learn that it was the mother who had been killing those kids; and the scene on the lake happened right after final girl's waking up and it cut right to the hospital which suggests it might have been her imagination - the policemen haven't seen any monster either.

The question is thus posed in the final cut of the movie. The frame is focusing on slight movements on the surface of the lake - it brings our attention to the waves as if to say "there is something down there". Surely, something is making the waves, something was killing those kids. If you have some bad luck on Friday the 13th would you say it's coincidence or there's something supernatural about it? A similar topic was touched upon by the policeman, when he was giving a lift to the boss of the camp, but they talked about the correlation of full moon with the higher number of murders - one suggests its linked, the other suggests it's coincidence.

After all, it's a good movie unless you're too smart for it.
