As the long-awaited crossover between Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, it was fun. It may not be a perfect movie, but it will still satisfy fans of the two horror icons.

We have here a long guilty pleasure of a movie, from two series of horror films that have long since become about bodycount and the form of murder. It doesn't quite deliver (it makes the same old mistake of focusing on its poorly-acted heroes, who the audience only wants to see be disemboweled), but if you're a fan of both series, it's a blast to see the titans go at it. A good part of the movie is devoted to Jason and Freddy actually competing for bodycount. A rave gets turned into a massacre. America's fondness for medicating its children even gets the finger here. Love this movie. More action than horror and I'm pretty sure it was never meant to be scary, just an awesome movie where horror icons battle it out. VERY ENTERTAINING.

During the movie there are flashes of reality and things that Freddy uses to scare the heck out of some people in their dreams. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Who doesn’t like the thought of some of their favorite bad guys fighting each other? Michael Meyers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Pinhead, Chucky, and the list can go on and on. Then add on the teaser that we might get a Freddy vs Jason at the end of Jason Goes to Hell (1993). And you get an audience foaming at the mouth. It took a decade, but we finally get it with Freddy vs Jason.

PLOT

He may get the blood, but I’ll get the glory, and that fear is my ticket home.-Freddy Krueger

Everyone has forgotten about Freddy so he is powerless. But now he found a way to resurrect Crystal Lakes serial killer Jason Voorhees. Jason will kill so that people will remember Freddy and he can return with all his powers. But things don’t go as planned when Jason doesn’t want to stop killing. The teens have repressed their memories (thanks to the adults in town) of Freddy, and they are not prepared for him or his new tool of terror, Jason Voorhees.

MY THOUGHTS

Welcome to my nightmare.-Freddy Krueger

I found the plot a pretty interesting idea. If you make the youth forget about Freddy, then it should make Freddy powerless. So, find someone else to stir things up so Freddy can insinuate himself back into this reality. Who better than Jason Voorhees? I know there are some issues with some of the plot ideas like why is Jason now scared of water? I can see why he would be but in some of the movies he has killed teens from the water so he’s not really scared of it. Also, there are some cringy scenes (like the whole pinballing of Jason at one point). And some might find the Freddy caterpillar cringeworthy. Though I actually liked the drug induced scene. Also, the ending is kind of vague of who won.

As far as the kills, Freddy has the least kills of any of his movies. He basically has one kill and Jason has the majority of them. One of my favorites is douchebag Trey’s death. Ouch! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. I also felt a little bad for poor Charlie. Trying to comfort Kia and get her to find help. He dies alone. I thought Deputy Stubbs’ death was lame and his character deserved better.

Here is some gee whiz information I found out about the movie:

The special effects team used about 300 gallons of fake blood for the movie.
Freddy vs Jason takes place two months after Jason Goes to Hell and 5 years before Jason X. (Friday the 13th Wiki)
Freddy vs Jason takes place 4 years after Freddy’s Dead. (A Nightmare on Elm Street Wiki)
The group goes to Westin Hills to get the Hypnocil. Hypnocil was the drug Nancy was taking in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and gave the remaining Elm street kids. Also note that the hospital Nancy worked at was Westin Hills as well.
Overall I enjoyed this movie. It was fun with two of my favorite bad guys. Was it really scary? No, but it was entertaining and definitely not the worst in either franchises. The sad thing is there are no more A Nightmare on Elm Street movies (besides the remake. Sigh. That will be the next movie I will be watching).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just to start things off, the main reason why the score for this is so high is mainly because of me being a fanboy and appreciating the fact that my dream has come true. If anything this would probably be a 6 or 5 at least, without my horror geek glasses on. This isn't my favorite horror movie; I believe I said Halloween was, but this is near the top for favorite ACTION movie. Yeah, this is more focused on action than it is scares, but when they try to scare us, it's not always successful. Sometimes it is, but not always. So as I remember, this movie had a long production period, it took years to get the rights to both characters, and when the chips were in New line's hand, they took it. With a movie called Freddy vs Jason you shouldn't expect anything else but action, so it keeps true to that with good fight scenes, and gallons of blood. the director: Ronny Yu I think, you could tell was more sympathetic towards Jason; even saying that he's like a samurai, and tries to make him a "hero" persay in the end. Also the actor in this movie playing jason is someone new, he has a more tall approach compared to Kane's big appearance, which I like. Freddy is still Freddy, saying puns whether they're are good or bad, this is a fitting farewell to Robert. The kids in this are actually not too bad, they're sympathetic at times, and are believable. None are great, but they're aren't bad either. There was this saying in the movie about the killers being killed by water and fire, but that doesn't go anywhere, it's more of a fun fact than anything. I would say that anyone liking either friday the 13th or A nightmare on Elm street should see this, and even if you just want to have fun with friends. Expand

There's no intestines flying out everywhere, which is saying a lot about today's horror movies. There was a complete lack of scares in this film and the only real blood splatter is when one guy gets decapitated, the entire house gets painted in his blood. It's an alright movie with an alright plot, it was very predictable, but it was a horror movie that really worked at answering the long-awaited question: Freddy or Jason? By the end of the film, you didn't really know the answer but it was cool to see what happens in the climax. Expand

Overall:
Freddy vs. Jason is far from perfect, but then again, none of the Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street movie were perfect either. This movie more or less copies the tone and style of both franchises to be something of its own. So in essence, this movie is exactly what it was meant to be.

There Jason's mask was pulled underneath by Freddys glove. This was awesome and fans were excited for the battle of two legends of horror / slasher movies. It took however 10 years to get this done with lots of rejected ideas, production issues and conflicts of interest. Ronny Yu was finally chosen as director and succeeded in making one of the best versus horror movies. Even the story is pretty good for a horror / slasher movie. The Elm Street has become peaceful as the residents have put Freddy Krueger into his worst nightmare. He is weakened as he is forgotten and not feared anymore. All his possible victims are out of his reach and there is nothing he can do against it on his own. Then he found a way out as he tricks Jason into doing his bidding expecting that his story will resurface and the knowledge and fear gives him his entrance back to action. However he did not expect to have no victims left as Jason does nothing halfhearted. This spawns an epic battle across the whole movie. In other movies the characters fight only at the end while here they clash again and again for a big part of the movie. They also archive to give both characters their strengths and weaknesses. I think both characters were handled well. Also for the rest of the cast the theme from Alien vs Predator is valid. Who ever wins we lose. Maybe there is a way for them to win or at least not to lose. For the Actors there is nothing wrong here too. Robert Englund is the embodiment of his role as Freddy Krueger and will forever be remembered as legend of the genre. Ken Kirzinger is an intimidating Jason Voorhees. For the others I think I will praise Monica Keena as Lori Campell, Jason Ritter as Will Rollins and Kelly Rowland as Kia Waterson for their roles and enhancing the movie. The fights are epic, brutal and merciless as each of the icons of horror tries their best in killing the other for good. I will not talk about themes, visual representation and ideas I enjoyed because of spoilers. Be warned for the ending. It is excellently done and satisfying but also something that can be a disappointment for others (Not for me). Overall this deserves credit for its ideas, style and being a success-story of a movie from development hell. A must see for fans of both franchises and the genre in general. Bonus knowledge: There was a plan to end the movie with both characters ending in hell where Pinhead from the Hellraiser franchise would appear and asked them what the problem was. A Freddy vs Jason vs Pinhead would even be more stuff of legends. Expand

After several film adaptations and sequels these characters were certainly starting to get stale. It was a project that was a long time coming but it worked. I found myself truly entertained. Robert Englund takes on a bigger role as Freddy than may have had in other installments of his respective series and that was what made it different from the same old same old. The movie is fun all the way through though. Especially for fans of either of these series. The tone of the film is more in line with later movies in both series. Which means we get a package built around the more excessive qualities those sequels contained.

However the movie doesn't really feel stale as a result thanks to the fact that this is a combination of the elements of the two different franchises. Had it just been Freddy or Jason onscreen by themselves we would have received a less entertaining movie. As it stands it's slasher movie fun with two iconic horror villains.

It is rather brainless entertainment though. Dumb moments pop up throughout just like they did in the sequels and there certainly isn't any fear to be found here. Scary is something it is not. Still, it's a fun watch. One that succeeds thanks the amount of blood it isn't afraid the shed with kills that hearken back to both series. Most of the jokes land with a thud, but the Freddy one liners are just entertaining as ever.

It's shear popcorn entertainment meant to give fans of these classic horror movies something to relish in. It's a nostalgia vehicle intended to be a bloody good time rather than a genuine horror experience. While that is rather disappointing the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th fan in me had no problem indulging in the experience. Sometimes that's all that really matters. It's one I think any fan of these two series should check out. Just seeing these two clash onscreen is enough to ensure entertainment for fans. It might not be the smartest slasher out there, but it is certainly some cheesy fun.

The characters (besides Freddy and Jason of course) are boring and aren't good actors, the plot while interesting just fails in execution and it really seems like the makers favored Jason, because the fights between the two are so onesided. Seriously even though they build up Freddy as being so evil they have to hide his existance in the fights they act as if Freddy is just a little **** as Jason beats him every time, even in the dream world he still manges to kick the crap out of him. Plus Freddy only kills ONE person the entire movie. Yeah Fail. I will however say that the best reason to watch this movie is for Robert Englund as you can tell he's having a blast in his final role as Freddy. Expand

In another, these same characters watch one guy get horrifically killed by Freddy, but they stand there at his gate screaming, not trying to at least break into his house and help him. Ugh. The final battle between the two killers is the highlight of the film, though, showering plenty of gore and limbs upon the audience, but it takes way too much time to get there and doesn't last long enough. While the gore is disgusting, Freddy is hilarious, and Jason is epic, the film focuses way too much on one-dimensional, boring characters, not a unlike Friday the 13th but uncharacteristic for Nightmare on Elm Street. It's not that I didn't expect that before watching, when having seen the title already, but in the end this bunch of awkwardness even failed to motivate me laughing about it. In fact, all I remember from the night I've seen it is that this movie pretty much abuses every single horror-movie clichee I had in mind at that time. But due to the predictability of the scary moments and the complete irrelevance of the story this work completely fails to scare anyone. The characters are not emotional, and even the two antagonists don't work well together. When trying to be disgusting, this movie for real only is hilarious, especially to the fact that the forced amount of gore and blood are non more than a "horrify" element giving at least a little scariness to the seen. I give Freddy versus Jason a score of two, as the acting matches the given situation and the effects are pretty good for 2003 and the setting. Other than that; this movie is stupid and boring and should not be watched. Expand

Something entitled Freddy vs. Jason in which two of horror's retro titans go head to head is not going to be aiming high. That being said in the hands of Ronny Yu (Bride of Chucky) the movie is a creative, campy, fun party fest of a flick. It also does a commendable if unnecessary job of bringing their two universes together. But like other modern reboots it has trouble creating a likable base of victims. Monica Keena (Dawson's Creek) is pretty awful as our mostly useless final girl. Only Kelly Rowland (Destiny's Child) and Chris Marquette (Barry)manage to make a memorable impression. As for the big boys Robert Englund is dependably charasmatic as Krueger but Ken Kirzinger really adds nothing to the role of Jason except for an aggressive stature. The movie also stars Lochlyn Munroe (Scary Movie), cutie Jason Ritter (Raise your voice), Brendan Fletcher (RV), Kathryn Issabelle (Ginger Snaps) and sexy stud muffin Zack Ward (Christmas Story) star. All in all it's really a fun ride that's visually stunning and quite entertaining.

Budget: $25m
Domestic Box Office: $83m
Worldwide Box Office: $117m

Directed by Ronny Yu, the film has a script from Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. I am sure that these gentlemen will have little to be proud of, since this script is no more than a shame. The main idea is basically a crossing between "Friday the 13th" and "Nightmare on Elm Street," that is, face-to-face, in tight rivalry, Jason and Freddy Krueger. This is what happens when you don't know what to create in order to give life to a franchise that should have finished long ago.

In the background, it was the swan song for this franchise, and also for the "Nightmare on Elm Street", which is not bad.

I was so excited to hear this movie coming out. It didn't disappoint. My two greatest horror killers of all time battling each other. Love this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Kids forget Freddy, he has no power, gets Jason to kill for him instead but Jason kills too many so they need to fight each other whilst the worst final girl ever just stands there and watches. Expand

Very fast and entertaining. Too gory but the Freddy and Jason battle rocks.

Though shoin some promise, offering few thrills, Freddy vs. Jason unfortunately becomes unrealistic, predictable and formulaic, with performances by much of the cast quite poor. Reverts to the usual horror cliches.

Apparently it doesn't take much to be considered a great horror movie by general audiences now.

This movie made me a fan of Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises, and caused me watch the other films in the franchise; this is favorite film of each respective franchise.

A lore Trainwreck for both slasher franchises, but good movie. Arguably the most enjoyable Jason

Extremely braindead, we in no way needed a Freddy rape tease scene. Definitely felt the early 2000s here, some very untasteful things. The kills were pretty good and bloody though, and the actual Freddy vs Jason fight was kinda fun.

Expand

The plot was strange yet fulfilling in its own manner. The special effects were nice and the actors were also good, the characters though has some problems. The teenagers especially were basic and basically just there to be killed, but that's with most slasher films. In terms of frights the movie provided a few but I don't think this movie was really intended to be scary. It's more of an action movie with horror characters. The movie is solid enough to warrant a watch, if you like these characters then watch it but don't expect a scare. Expand
