I didn't enjoy it much...to me it is overrated. The plot is weak...it is not credible, and Andie McDowell performance was sooo dull! Perhaps another actress would have transmitted more emotion! Just a 5 because it is almost below mediocre. II didn't enjoy it much...to me it is overrated. The plot is weak...it is not credible, and Andie McDowell performance was sooo dull! The infectious charm and sunny goodwill of Four Weddings and a Funeral can so immediately buoy a soul ravaged by winter weather and winter movies.

What ensues, however, is a film that does not really feel like any other nominee from this era. It is a small scale romantic comedy about a bachelor who comes to find love in a cliched downpour after experiencing four weddings and a funeral over the course of two hours. Frightfully British, Four Weddings and a Funeral is a fine film that, while perhaps not Best Picture good, is a truly funny and charming little film with a typically charismatic Hugh Grant in the lead role opposite Andie Macdowell. The weirdest part of this movie though is the revelation that MacDowell's character has slept with 33 men, whereas Grant's has only slept with nine. Maybe I just think Macdowell looks innocent or something, but there is no way Hugh Grant has slept with less people than her. There are not many people who have slept with more, I would wager. As a side note, I just discovered that Grant had four children between 2011 and 2015. The interesting part is that it was with two women. One, a Chinese woman gave birth in 2011 and 2013. The other, a Swedish woman, gave birth in 2012 and 2015. Having discovered this bit after having written the bit about wagering he slept with more people than most can claim, I now feel even more confident about this bet.

That said, focusing on the film, Four Weddings and a Funeral is a truly enjoyable experience. Fast, witty, and smart, the film is not merely some disposable comedy. Instead, it goes to great lengths to subtly develop its characters. By focusing on the weddings and the funeral, the character development can slide by undetected. But, it is absolutely there and quite abundant. Through these encounters, the film explores friendship and mortality. With each passing wedding, these single characters feel time ticking, but find joy in their group of friends. The shared experience and bond with one another is readily apparent and worn on their sleeves throughout, particularly when one of the group gets married. Offering their congratulations, but equally expressing their hope that they will stay in touch, you feel the hopelessness of that request. Through no fault of their own, marriage will cause strain on friendships. People you loved will fall to the side purely because of time limits or distance. It is like every major moment in your life - graduating high school, graduating college, moving, getting a job, getting married, etc - where things change and people move on to new things. In the process, people close to you are left behind. Thus, the film becomes quite somber as you recognize that the love felt in the romance is simultaneously the happy couple spending their last hurrah with their old group of friends, some of whom they will never share the same connection with again.

Romantically, the film does not click nearly as well. It is a film that focuses on missed connections through unrequited love or the one you love marrying someone else. Yet, it lacks the guts to subvert expectations. Instead, it relies upon a cheesy sequence in the rain that is lazily written and oddly acted by Grant and Macdowell to close out this film. While undeniably cute, it does not jive well with the rest of the film and instead feels too neat to truly work for this film. While I am hardly arguing that the film is transcendent or not cliche up to that point, it does feel a little odd for a film to end so happy when it portrays every other issue that pops up as merely something we must deal with in life. There is no perfect person, deaths happen, unrequited love is real, and missed connections happen due to circumstance. Sadly, it lacks the courage to punch the audience in the gut by having Charles (Hugh Grant) just marry the girl he does not love because it is what he feels he must do, regardless of love. Sadly, it is a largely safe and entirely palatable romantic comedy, so expectations are not subverted here.

Charming and witty with tremendous comedic dialogue, Four Weddings and a Funeral feels like a comedy drama tricked into playing up to romantic comedy expectations, even if its first two acts seem to be leading up to an entirely different film. That said, it is a fun film and a pretty odd Best Picture nominee. Featuring a slickly charismatic turn from Hugh Grant in the lead role alongside a game supporting cast, the film is terrific for laughs and an equally great look at friendship as one ages and begins going to weddings and funerals on a regular basis. While gooey and cheesy, it is undeniably great fun to watch unfold.

Not a bad effort by any means and one of Hugh Grant's better performances. I'll nudge it up to seven only because of the vast influence this flick has had on future movies (Death at a Funeral and Love Actually to name a couple). Grant's hopeless romantic character is likable while McDowell plays the part of love interest effectively.
Grant's mad group of friends provide the lion's share of laughter while Rowan Atkinson's brilliant irony was inexplicably underutilised.
I would hesitate to call this a must-see but would recommend it for aficionados of romantic comedy.

So this movie beat the 1994 film "Pulp Fiction" at the BAFTA awards. Just like the Oscars, the BAFTA messed up big time.

Normally British films to me are kind of an mix bag and what I mean is that sometimes I enjoy or be bored by movies from Britain. I don't know why it just happens and this is coming from a guy who is from Britain. I was a bit shocked when I find out that this movie was named Best Film at BAFTA awards, and to the people who liked this movie more than Pulp Fiction that's fine, but to me (in my personal opinion) this movie was just alright.

Let's start of with the positive: The acting from everyone was solid and this movie has a great cast.

The movie did make me laugh at times with characters doing wacky things that no normal person would do at a weddings. So yeah those kind of jokes.

I'm not going to spoil anything, but theses a scene where there are at this funeral and one of the characters gives a sad and a very moving speech that made me tear up a bit.

Now for things that didn't work for me: I didn't really think this movie is on the level of amazing as some has put it out to be, I'm not saying it's bad as I honestly think it's just alright.

Very few times does an intention gets the reaction that the core of the positive star expects, this is one of those times.

Four Weddings And A Funeral

Newell is creating history. What I find fascinating and funny is that he does it with cream filled cookies and goody shakes. Richard Curtis, the writer and Mike Newell, the director's film is a textbook cliche in rom com genre. What he does in here is all familiar, seen-this-seen-that and frankly ordinary. Inadvertently, what they are doing is raising a vital question in this filmmaking process and it is that what should be kept above all. The way of storytelling or the story itself.

And the answer that the film screams in love is the style and the authenticity through which a story is told. If you have a better version to be told of those same characters and the same storyline, it should not only be accepted but encouraged. And that very, a boy meets a girl, they fall in love, the situation sets them apart, another ingredient is added to spice up the dish, boy and girl finally realizes their mistake and they claim their love under the sun and the rain, is told here. But it is fun. It is a film that stays with you.

You can always ring the bell among a crowd with a feel good film, but the only way to make it last longer is by never sugar coating the charmness it consists. And it never for a frame takes that for granted. The jokes are kept in smooth, the one liners are pinned down by the pragmatic environment and the levity that grounds the game changing confessions, just watch Kristen Scott Thomas and Hugh Grant play the awkwardness between them, their body language is far superior than what they speak. Four Weddings And A Funeral overcomes its conceptual issues with spontaneity something that our usual love track lacks.

From its release until today, it has been one of Britain's most beloved and respected films, as well as being a box office hit, critical acclaim and award-winning. Nominated for two Oscars (Best Film and Best Original Screenplay), it won three BAFTA (Best Film, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress) and was the first English film to win the prestigious Cesar Award, from the French Academy. It is a considerable record for a film with a low budget, and which had a good dose of improvisation and creativity.

Even so, I cannot say that I am satisfied with the film. Maybe it's my mistake and my expectations were too high, but I feel it's more serious and less funny than I expected. I know British humor is quite peculiar, but I kind of like that kind of humor, and I find it lacking in this movie, where the marriages follow one after the other. The script focuses its attention on the romantic dynamics between characters, and we see them getting to know each other and relating, with the film showing the result of this in the next marriage, without focusing on anyone in particular except for the main character, a bachelor. The idea is original but tiresome and, for a lot of people, the movie will be nothing more than a succession of pompous weddings. I also didn't really like the story between Charles and Carrie: they don't know each other, they're not really friends, but they have sex after two of the marriages in the movie, and that happens before they even really have romantic feelings... that is, before love comes sex, and that's something I really don't approve of, call me a moralist if you want because I don't give a damn. I think the script should have foreseen that, creating a common past for these characters, like old boyfriends or schoolmates...

Hugh Grant is the star of this film, and here he uses all the British bachelor charm that has earned him success in other romantic comedies: a pretty face, a shy smile, a voice that stutters nervously before settling in and saying the lines in the script, eyes that don't seem to want to fix on anyone in particular. I can understand why the actor has become so popular, particularly among women with a penchant for shy and heavily accented guys. And I must admit that the actor did very well with what was asked of him and gave the character the right tone. Andie McDowell, on the other hand, doesn't seem so genuine in her character and seems old for the role, besides that her chemistry with Grant doesn't work (I preferred the intensity and spontaneity of David Haig and Sophie Thompson, they seem two rabbits in heat, but they also seem passionate and involved enough). The film also has good appearances from Simon Callow, John Hannah, Kristin Scott Thomas and Rowan Atkinson. There are many other well-known British actors here, but in roles that are reasonably less remarkable. The entire cast, in general, excels in restrained interpretations and the dialogues often have something philosophical, in the ramblings of the characters about love and marriage. There's something dreamy about it, but the film doesn't delve into the theme.

Technically, the film has many interesting points to consider, starting with a good cinematography, which makes good use of weather variations and English rain. The locations where the recordings were made were very well-chosen, although the pomp of the weddings, with dozens of flowers, hats, dresses, frock coats and top hats, makes the public wonder if really all those people are rich or aristocrats, or simply decided to go bankrupt to pay all that. The film also has a discreet but effective soundtrack, where some best-known songs end up deserving the spotlight.

Hugh Grant is the best thing about 'Four Weddings and a Funeral', he gives an amusing performance. The plot is obvious and speaks for itself, it does lead to a few interesting shenanigans. Some of the dialogue is iffy, as is some of the editing though.

None of the cast behind Grant stood out to me, with the exception of Rowan Atkinson; but that's only down to how well known he is in general, as here he is underused. I found Andie MacDowell's performance very wooden. I appreciate them not going the obvious route with Kristin Scott Thomas' character, even if it makes her Fiona redundant throughout.

Just about serviceable, worth watching if only once.
