It's annoying, and it belies his typical confident self that we all know and love. And why would a movie of this profile ever stage a super bowl with fake teams? Get the licenses, producer! Highly bootleg. Margot Robbie is great, but she doesn't really extend herself much at all. Not like Annette Bening in The Grifters, or Eileen Brennan in the Sting. And unlike those other movies, Focus lacks "bite". It's getting a Vanilla Ensure when you were hoping for a rich Haagen Daz chocolate shake. Expand

There's overwhelming opulence, exotic setting and beautiful ladies at display here for the grand dramatization of thievery. It showcases a glamorous lifestyle, riches and ladies, portrayed by the charismatic leads. However, the movie recycles this material too often and having too much investment in lovey-dovey banters does wear the tension thin.

Story follows Nicky (Will Smith), a veteran thief who meets with Jess (Margot Robbie), an aspiring thief. Together they embark on a swindling journey, manipulating people and each other into giving what they want. Led by the charismatic Will Smith, Focus boasts an interesting anti-hero. He's very versatile, able to perform in comedic as well as more serious tone. Robbie has a wide range of acting too, she seems natural although sometimes leaning heavily on femme fatale cliché.

This is at heart a romance movie, with the backdrop of felony, not the other way around. The liaison aspect is scrutinized deeper than the actual thefts. This should be fine as both Smith and Robbie are capable leads, but it tends to lose momentum after the many times it uses "He loves me, he loves me not" gimmick. It's more of a light relationship than an intense trickery exchange, while pretty entertaining it's barely enough to keep the suspense.

The film possesses a stylish colorful cinematography. Design for costume and the vista are very suave, something out of a page of rich people magazine. It offers fantasy celebrity nuance, a brighter side of crime, so to speak. Its choice of soundtracks reflects it as well, playing classy tunes to serenade heist and courtship. While the plans might not be masterful, there are some good plot twists to unveil here.

With fascinating set and actors Focus is a decent drama film, but to reach thrilling suspense it needs to focus more on plundering instead of plowing.

The second"Focus" hits the ground running with an electrifying first half, then it stumbles and falls hard. The opening in New Orleans is energetic and slick, the pacing is brisk, and the comedy and action is deftly and effectively mixed. The second half, however, jarringly ventures into thriller territory the film is neither confident nor comfortable in navigating. There are glimmers of brilliance - B.D. Wong's cameo, a scene in a car with a methodical assassin - but the end result of the film is muddled, with far too many twists, loose ends, and anticlimaxes. Will Smith more than has the requisite charisma for a part such as this, but the film is beneath him and he seems aware of this throughout, which detracts from his performance. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie (who was excellent in "The Wolf of Wall Street") is awkward in an underwritten role, which is more the scriptwriters' faults than hers. Furthermore, the two seem mismatched and have little-to-no discernible chemistry. This is a misshapen, confused, weak, and generic disappointment of a film which doesn't do justice to its stars or accomplished beginning. Expand

In typical con movie fashion, there were a lot of good switch moments, where the audience is left looking from one person to another and trying to assess who's lying, who's telling the truth, and who's in on the con--plus there are good twists and surprises throughout to keep you guessing, and I had fun afterward going back and rethinking earlier scenes in light of information that came out later on in the movie's plot. The central component of the whole story is the love plot between Will Smith and Margot Robbie, but their relationship wasn't given enough foundation to make it a compelling romance. Still, the movie has really fun moments of petty larceny, gambling, sexual tension, and just a touch of violence. Not a great movie, but not a bad one either. Expand

Nicky Spurgeon (Will Smith) is a career con-artist who is targeted in a hotel bar by Jess Barrett (Margot Robbie) for a sting of her own after she spots his expensive suit and other accoutrements. Seeing through the scam instantly NickyNicky Spurgeon (Will Smith) is a career con-artist who is targeted in a hotel bar by Jess Barrett (Margot Robbie) for a sting of her own after she spots his expensive suit and other accoutrements. Seeing through the scam instantly Nicky offers some advice on how to become better at conning others, and telling Jess to 'die with the lie', to never break character.
After joining Nicky's 'crew', the two begin to develop feelings for one another and as Jess develops her skills Nicky realises that his feelings will ultimately result in his failure to do whatever needs to be done if a con involving them both happens to go wrong.
He cuts her from the crew, and goes off on a high paying con involving a billionaire playboy who wants to ensure his motor racing team doesn't lose, by having Nicky pretend to be someone his competitors would want to pay in order to obtain some (useless) information.
As per usual there is the 'twist' ending....
The film itself is well shot and directed, the cinematography/editing capture the risk/reward element of professional cons being carried out, and the soundtrack is also very good indeed.
Smith and Robbie have great chemistry, and both are more than happy to expose some flesh as the film progresses. The supporting cast do a fantastic job too, and the camaraderie of the 'crew' is great to watch.
So, why only a rating of 4..? Two reasons. The first is the screenplay, that tries to be too clever and include elements from other (better) films. Also the twist ending makes no sense and, for me, completely negated a large element of the suspense of the third act when it's revealed. The second is the script, which attempts to be pop-culturist with characters making inane comments all the time which in no way endears you to them.
Overall, it's a well acted film, but would have been a lot better with a tighter script and a more well thought out screenplay.

It's not so much full of dramatic ambiguity as it is muddled and unclear. There isn't really any dramatic turn for the characters, and the tumults of their relationship make no sense. The ending is lame and anticlimactic. And frankly, it just seems like the once great Will Smith has been phoning it in for a while now.

The positives are elsewhere. The film's first third, set in New Orleans, is more energetic and flows better, and promises what should have been a more interesting set of capers. Some of the supporting actors bring stronger work, including a hilarious turn by B.D. Wong (i.e. the psychiatrist from Law & Order) as a high-rolling businessman. And as to the reason that many people will watch, to see if this previously unknown Margot Robbie can hold the screen with Will Smith and is ready for some of the bigger roles awaiting her, the answer to that is yes.

“They don’t make them like they use” so it is said but “Focus” proves them wrong. It is a movie about the con artists trade and giving basic lessons in how to work the trade. The thing with con artists is that you don’t know if and/or when“They don’t make them like they use” so it is said but “Focus” proves them wrong. It is a movie about the con artists trade and giving basic lessons in how to work the trade. The thing with con artists is that you don’t know if and/or when they are conning each other.

Nicky (Will Smith) has 35 ‘employees’ who heist watches, wallets, money, credit cards, jewels, clothes, anything that you can take from an unknowing mark and then sell it to fences dividing what they make after expenses. Jess (Margot Robbie) who has just been getting along with her cons wants to advance and so she cons Nicky into teaching her how to do just that and that is where/how the audience learns the art of focusing while distracting.

The movie takes place in the world of the rich and famous starting in a restaurant and hotel in Manhattan, then going to a super Bowl sky-box in the Superdome and French Quarter in New Orleans and then to Buenos Aries for the Formula 1 races. The directors, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, think nothing of destroying a Ferrari for a 30 second scene. The directors, also the screenwriters, obviously learned the business of scams and con artists and even gives credit to Apollo Robbins as the ‘con artist/adviser/pickpocket’ expert.

Smith and Robbie have enough charisma to make their love affair believable though at times that does drag the movie almost to a halt.

The supporting players make the film and scams really interesting and fun starting with BD Wong as you never saw him on “Law and Order”, rich playboy Garriga (Rodrigo Santoro) possibly doing a con of his own, Adrian Martinez as Nicky’s very funny partner in crime , Robert Taylor an Australian race car mogul along with Gerald McRaney as a tough enforcer who is funny without knowing he is not what you see.

“Focus” has many scammers applying cons including each other and it really doesn’t make a difference if you don’t quite follow all of them. As in movies like they use to make this is a swift moving luxuriously filmed just sit back and enjoy the actors, the scenery and the life you might like to lead.

What it lacks in plot cohesiveness, it more than makes up with its stylish direction, charismatic actors, and compelling twists and turns. Though the twists and turns can be kind of annoying after a point, however, so that is not a major plus, but they do work for the most part. Truly, this one is incredibly sleek and sexy as a thriller, but also manages to have enough humor and quality one-liners to make it passable as a comedy. When watching Focus, however, it is hard to take your eyes off of Margot Robbie, who really knocks this role out of the park, as does Will Smith. Without their coolness and charisma in the lead roles, Focus would be a far lesser film and they really exude the right type of personality to convince you of damn near anything, as conmen should. Overall, Focus is not a great film, but is quite well made and is just stylish enough to overcome its many shortcomings. Expand

Of course, Will Smith is going to play Will Smith and Margot Robbie, well, she's going to play the insanely good-looking Barbie. It reminds of the good moments of Ocean's Twelve. Unfortunately, the core plot is very, very dishonestly idiotic (albeit not so predictable) and it ruins the entire movie. Which, to be clear, never meant to be a great caper, instant classic film, but could have been way more fun if they had let it spin in that direction a bit longer.

As I said, great soundtrack. And great cinematography. As for the rest, average.

And when I started watching it, it actually was pretty cool. Will Smith being all super-pro, teaching how to make tricks, how to be focused, showing something really nice. Then all of them, because there is a team, start to do the same thing, but in a bigger scale. It is really incredible. That's the first half of the film, what you would consider the introduction, but, sadly, it doesn't goes far from there. What you would expect in the second half is a fraud, to steal a lot of money, but in a bigger scale, with all of them working really hard to get it. But it is not like that, nothing happens, there are some tricks, some stupid thing about love and that's it. Of course, at the ending a lot of things are solve which actually make te movie cooler, but before that it is boring and slow. That actually disappointed me very much.

In some of the most important turning point of the story, character’s motivations for doing such, are unknown and stay the same when the movie ended. Also, final turn in the story which revealed at the end of the movie is so cheaply made which turn lots of movie scene, characters, events and actions irrelevant, unnecessary and even wrong (due to the plot).

Also, the acting from Jess (Margot Robbie) and Nicky (Will Smith) is great
Focus, the movie's got an interesting plot with a few good scenes but it's got plenty of scenes which don't link up very well and they end up not making much sense.

Also, the acting from Jess (Margot Robbie) and Nicky (Will Smith) is great and their dialogue is also pretty good.

I just wish the rest of the cast's dialogue was a bit better because it came off quite forced in a lot of the scenes, in my opinion.

Finally, the movie's got some very clever scenes and it's got some very predictable moments but I really liked that scene with Nicky and Jess, where they're betting money down, I thought that was quite clever.

Overall, Focus isn't that bad of a movie. The movie's got a pretty good cast, some alright dialogue and some very clever moments.

Focus has well-portrayed, likeable leads with good chemistry and thanks to some humour and the obligatory twists and turns is a thoroughly solid and enjoyable heist movie.
