This film moved and inspired me. It was real and raw. Nice to see a true story about actual heroism. My only criticism was that is was difficult to hear some of the dialogue. Wonderful performances all around.

The choices being made and their consequences. Some might look at the trailer and think this is a religious movie with a religious message. But it anything but that. This is a movie about Stu, you, me, everyone. And how choices will always have consequences. You don't need to be religious to understand the message being given. You just have to believe in something, even if that something is you. This is all about how you choose to relate to people, who you choose to love, hate, help, or turn your back on. It's also about how you choose to be remembered. Will you impact people's lives in a way they'll keep your memory alive long before you are gone? Or will you just fade from memory as a bad dream? The performances are rock solid, so you won't find any complaints there. Each actor and actress brought their best, even those less known and less experienced. The story is relatable, simple to understand, and above all it isn't selling you anything. It's just telling you, watch and decide how much you take from this. In these times where most movies are trying to tell you how to think or what to think, it's very refreshing to see a movie tell you to your face that your life is your own, but just because it's your own doesn't mean it will not affect other people along the way. This movie is both about acceptance and how hard it can be to accept but how liberating it also is when you accept those things you can't understand or change. The best and worst part is that it's based on a true story. Best because it will always leave you with something even if you don't see things in that specific perspective. And worst because it shows that people are becoming less than what people once were. How in more recent years we've lost so much in terms of being able to accept and just want to be accepted, to the point that now some can't content with acceptance and instead they want those that don't agree with them under their boot. This is definitely a must see if you just want to relax, have some laughs, do some soul retrospective, and figure out where you are in life and if where you are is where you want to be. Expand

I found movie to be funny and enjoyable. Yes it had its religious messages and I appreciate that, but the amount of people attacking the movie with an obvious anti-religion bent, who honestly probably haven't even seen the movie is amazing. Go see it and make up your own minds. Can fairly guarantee you will enjoy the movie at the very least. Expand

Finally a movie that isn’t based on complete nonsense. It’s based on reality and about someone who helped more people than all the angry losers that hate this movie combined.

I only stress this to give an understanding of the fact that my criticism of this film has nothing to do with religion, but the manipulation this story employs by using it.
Especially given the huge dissonance between what this film seemed to want to tell at the start and what it ends up doing. Particularly the message it ends up giving.

Now when you're recounting a story about a boxer who wanted to be an actor and ends up with a call to priesthood after getting involved with the Catholic church because he was hoping to win the attention of a woman, you really need more than Mark Whalberg's lazy performance.
Mel Gibson and Jacki Weaver are also part of it, but both are just catalysts to explain the main character's demeanor.

It's at the moment when Whalberg's character has an accident that reinforces his conviction to become a priest when the film opts for a plot manipulation that doesn't justify anything that follows and only seeks to provoke an emotional reaction from the audience yet it feels flat and insubstantial. And I just hate it when these stories only hope that because of the idea of ''divine motivational grace'' the audience will fill in all the gaps the plot just couldn't.
And that' s ultimately Father Stu's entire bet.

The decent screenplay drives it's talented cast through a sepia toned handheld camera style of cinematography with whalbergs trademark 'gangsta sassiness' as the centrepiece. Ultimately there's nothing particularly original here given the huge wealth of dramas with similar beats to it. The real movie would've been just Gibson and whalberg in a room for a couple hours. Nevermind! Worth a watch but few surprises. Expand

In the States one doesn't need to recite when movies are sermons on one's spiritual beliefs. This biopic could have been filmed directly by Gibson or Caviezel, instead it was written and shot by Mel's debutante girlfriend, and Wahlberg joined them also as a producer. Completely out of role, I now fear for Malcolm McDowell.

An interesting biopic of an interesting individual; a nice change of pace to the standard film we're normally getting these days.

Movies about real people are choppy and have "what an idiot" scenes, but it's about real people, not a well written story. So it is with this movie. With that in mind, what a life Stu lived.

The acting by Wahlberg and Gibson is quite compelling and it's more real and honest than any other religious drama movie I've seen, with four-dimensional characters and down to earth dialogue. The fact that it's a religious movie at its core doesn't shy this movie away from having strong language in its conversation, and that's a type of honesty I can appreciate. I believe Wahlberg's acting capabilities are as good as the director or the script of the movie wants it to be, but he does a real good job this time. The handling of Father Stu's disease might have been done better, but all in all it's an inspiring movie that I can recommend if you're searching for inspiration or a religious movie with a deep message.
