As a Harry Potter fan, I liked this movie, especially the first half which focuses on showing how the "American Harry Potter world" works, with some funny scenes of the MC against the police when it looks like he is trying to steal a bank and some relaxing slice of life scenes of a wizarding house. The second half is less likable, it is just a crazy escape from the American Ministry then a crazy battle and since all things are literally "magic" it isn't very solid plot IMO, especially the ending (how they magically obliviate the whole city memory).

Remarkably lacklustre for a film involving magical creatures.

'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' underwhelmed me, in short. At no moment across the 130 or so minute run time was I ever invested or drawn into the story or the characters. I didn't feel any good performances from the cast either. Dan Fogler sticks out in my memory most, though the rest are forgettable.

The special effects are also not to the level I was expecting; that's not to say that they are bad and I'm not certain what I was indeed anticipating from them, but I just found 'em to be meh - nothing blew me away. Which is a vibe that I got from the whole film unfortunately.

Hopefully 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' does more for me.

One of my first thoughts about it was that it reminded me somewhat of the Men in Black films, due to plot elements (the secrecy between the beasts and humans etc.). I noticed its set in New York, as the Men in Black films are too - I can only presume thats due to the international appeal of the city(?).

I thought Eddie Redmayne gave a great performance as Newt Scamander. He almost looks as amazed as the viewer may look, at some of what happens, although he is obviously aware of what he carries but perhaps moreso the things they get up to. I found it a somewhat engrossing read but I suppose if your not much keen on CGI centered films then this may not appeal, or if fantasy isn't your thing. I thought it was an enjoyable watch overall.

Would I recommend it? yes, I would.

With proper care and attention, this has the potential to become a series that is just as enjoyable and magical as its big brother series. As is, this mature and dark story is one where both fans and general audiences will be equally entertained. Oh, and it's good to see you back in the director's chair Mr. Yates! Expand

I have just finished watching the movie on Prime Video and everything is absolutely fresh in my mind right now. I had no idea what I was going in for. I didn't read the original book or watch any trailer before seeing this movie. All I hadI have just finished watching the movie on Prime Video and everything is absolutely fresh in my mind right now. I had no idea what I was going in for. I didn't read the original book or watch any trailer before seeing this movie. All I had heard was that this takes place in the same universe as Harry Potter, which is why I watched it. And honestly speaking, this movie is nothing different from what I expected it would be.

The problem with this movie is that it's very, very cliched. It uses those exact plot points that make an annoying movie, well, annoying. That's literally how this movie begins: Making an annoying creature do things for which the protagonist gets in trouble. This is just like how Dobby was in The Chamber of Secrets, except over there he was doing it because he had been asked to do so. The marsupial mole over here wasn't doing it for any particular reason at all, except for being cringy. If I were Newt I'd have just let him get caught and die.

And then of course, Newt is unregistered. The way the movie began made it seem like Newt was a complete idiot, except that the whole point behind his character is that he's smart. He's the only one person who cares about the beasts of the magical world unlike the zoophobic wizards. Every species in this whole movie - muggles, wizards, magical creatures - everyone was unlikeable. They all did things which made me want them to get their comeuppance.

The only thing that saved this movie for me was the world building. I have heard that the book is actually a guidebook for all the creatures living in their universe. So this, being an adaptation, was the only good part in the entire movie. And it was so beautiful that I enjoyed this otherwise irritating movie. I really wish that was the main focus of the movie instead of them being about fugitives running from the law and something something Ezra Miller.

Another thing I really liked about this movie is the depiction of the 1920's America. All the characters looked like they belonged in that age. The ignorant, hateful behaviour of the people from that time was very well depicted, if that was intentional. The acting was great. People reacted just like how they would if the CGI was present before them in real life.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a movie that seems to be more oriented for a young audience, since they are the ones who will find it more appealing. It has cool and cute animals, funny scenes, childish storyline and overall the 90's and early 00's vibe to it. It's a one time watch for the adults, since the only good thing to offer for a mature audience is the phenomenal CGI. It won't remain as interesting if watched for a second time, which is why I'd recommend you to not ruin the experience by watching it for the second time.

Magic Cash-Cow: and How to Milk It.

It's not quite as magical or amazing as Harry Potter but there is definitely something there.

This is a good start to a new story in the Magical World of Harry Potter. Hopefully, sequels don't let it down.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No story & too much CGI
I have to say that I am really disappointed of the movie as a whole. The Harry Potter movies are easily one of the best and most rewatchable movie franchises so far. And this movie is sadly nothing like the original HP movies. The only thing that is has in common are the special effects (for the apparitions). There was no real dialogue between the characters. Just silly one-liners and the occasional humorous remark. I am also very angered by the fact that they just introduced a new concept (obscurials) to the HP franchise that would literally change everything (if obscurials exist why hasn't Harry Potter become one? After all he fits the criteria).

There was also way too much CGI in the movie. It became a real nuisance after a while. Especially because it wasn't even "up to today's standards".

My final critique concerns the overall flair of the movie. It just didn't feel like it belongs to the magnum opus that is the HP movie franchise. And righteously so; why did they film it in NYC? The HP franchise is the most British thing since James Bond and Doctor Who. I never really realized it before but now that I watched this movie it became very clear to me. You can't just change the location like this and expect the audience to embrace it. Sorry. What's next? Fantastic Beasts in Japan? No thanks. We already have that, it's called Kaiju.

In spite of the latest films by H.P. made by David Yates who now seems to have left the darkness! The soundtrack of J.N. Howard is truly adorable as well as the set design that is rarely so well looked after, as the costumes that have earned him an Oscar. Colin Farrell, truly remarkable. Do I have to find any faults? Maybe it could last a few minutes less and allow more space to focus on the plot. Really beautiful fantastic animals and ending with a stellar surprise bang. Personally, I am one of many teenagers who read all the books and saw all the films but I was afraid when I heard about the idea of making this film. The environment is very different from what we saw in Harry Potter and, if it weren't for the mention of several elements we saw in previous films, the link would be very small. Accentuating the differences is the fact that this film takes place between World Wars and has New York as its setting.

The idea for this film came from the small book "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", and it follows the adventures of their fictional author, Newt Scamander. He goes to New York with a suitcase of little monsters, some of them escape and their eagerness to recapture them puts the city in an uproar and concerns the magical authorities. However, some incidents are attributed to Scamander's animals, who refute responsibilities and end up engaged in an effort to discover what powerful evil being has caused them.

The story, dark and mysterious, manages to keep our interest but the prestige of Harry Potter universe and our willingness to see how it all will end helped a lot. In fact, now we can check all its problems, which make it more boring than the worst of Harry Potter films: it takes a long time to develop and the story, initially confusing, turns out to be illogical and underdeveloped. Another problem is their poorly developed and generally one-dimensional characters. Scamander may be nerdy but he lacks charisma and leadership. The Goldstein witches goes from naive to stubborn. Credence looks like a man with a traumatic depression and Kowalski is just an idiotic "muggle".

David Yates did a good job. I am convinced that he was decisive in preventing this film from being a fiasco. In fact, with all the problems, the overall performance of the cast, mostly little known to me, is naturally affected and only the hand of a skilled director could help them. Despite being a good actor, Eddie Redmayne does not perform miracles and is far from his best. Dan Fogler managed to be more interesting and charismatic than he, in the same proportion that he knew how to be funny and to captivate public's sympathy. Alison Sudol also captures our sympathy by giving her character a candid and sweet aura, but she is so sugary and stupid that I wanted to hit her with a chair. Another actor able of becoming sympathetic was Ezra Miller, but I think he didn't have enough material to develop his character beyond anger and a depressive cry. Katherine Waterston was uninteresting. Colin Farrell is somber but doesn't seem to know what he's doing. Carmen Ejogo is hateful. Worse than she, Samantha Morton seems to have been inspired by the wicked witch of the fairy tales. We also have the additions of Ron Perlman, unrecognizable but impeccable, and Johnny Depp, who does nothing more than an irrelevant and uninteresting cameo.

Technically, this is a very visual film, thanks to tons of very high quality CGI, as we would expect. Its an expensive film, a super-production where green screen was the key. As it should be, the film is loaded with magical creatures that we have never seen before and each one is more incredible than the other. I especially liked the niffler, which looks like a friendly kleptomaniac platypus. Cinematography is characterized by good colors, a misty but pleasant environment, good use of light and dark and very clear footage. To add aesthetic quality, we have the charm of the Thirties, the golden decade for New York. Few decades have given us so much charm and style: magnificent cars, clothes and props that are still in fashion today and an incredible urban landscape, where there is no lack of fog and rain. For a moment, I almost felt like I was in a gangster movie, just missing the jazz background. The soundtrack, by James Newton Howard, is good and epic, but it is not surprising for those who has seen Harry Potter.

Although the film exudes style, it lacks content, good characters and a strong and charismatic lead. Anyway, it achieved a feat that even Harry Potter, who broke box office records, managed to achieve: finally the franchise won an Oscar, for Best Costume Design, which in fact was deserved.

Considering the film we have here, coupled with the fact that J.K. Rowling assumed sole scripting responsibilities this time around, it comes to no surprise that die hards have evoked the Prequels (yes, that's "Prequels" with a capital "P," as you know exactly what's being referred to) as a comparison piece. This film takes the stately and quaint priggishness out of what we all understand the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to be, and yet somehow makes it all lesser in terms of appeal? Maybe it's the lack of British accents. Or maybe it's the pedestrian nature of the world in play, considered in hand with the disjointed narrative, incomplete character work, and confounding lore. On second thought, maybe it was the British accents. All kidding aside, however, this really didn't feel like a Harry Potter movie to me. Now, that doesn't mean the whole movie is bad or otherwise unwatchable. But it is most definitely an inferior product. With the lush history, legendary world-building, and -- honestly -- more impressive effects of the previous eight films in mind, I feel as though I've already seen the light when it comes to anything involving this universe. And while that light was shaped like a proud and stolid stag, "Fantastic Beasts'" light remains in the shape of a. . .what the hell was that platypus-looking thing called again? Expand

NewtFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has the magical feeling that you want from a Harry Potter film. It's also awesome to see what it's like for adults to be out in the magical world on their own and freely use magic as they see fit. Newt is also a very likable character, arguably much more likable than any of the kids in the original Harry Potter films. Unfortunately, the story just doesn't do it for me. The creatures are cool, but Newt spends most of the film just chasing creatures around New York, while there's also a sub-plot that is trying to incorporate some darker themes into the film. Neither storyline is particularly that interesting or engaging, and I couldn't help but be disappointed that this is all J.K. Rowling could come up with for the Harry Potter first spin-off film. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by how good it is. The story seems much darker than the Harry Potter series, definitely more tailored towards adults but that's what I enjoyed about it. I found the main cast of characters very likeable and rooted for each one. Honestly, I was really afraid about the theme music, because of Harry Potter, if it had even the slightest similarities to it's iconic soundtrack, I would have cringed but the music didn't resemble Harry Potter at all, even though it wasn't as memorable. Good thing I watched this movie as late as I did, because I don't want this story to end! Expand

Each actor or actress fit their respected role perfectly. This can be seen with Eddie Redmayne. He just played Newt in such a way that he was relatable. He was such a charismatic character that everybody loves. Also, Dan Fogler was hilarious as Jacob Kowalski. He had pretty much all of the funny lines in this film. He also was the audience character which was nice to have in a film like this. The score by James Newton Howard was incredible to hear. The costumes in this film, which are Oscar-winning, are fabulous. They look like they were taken out of a history book for what people might have worn in the 1920’s. The last good thing I want to mention is the visual effects and set designs. Their production design was Oscar-nominated and you can see why. You can see how much detail went into each set that they wanted to show in this film. Same thing with the special effects. All the beasts and creatures in this film looked remarkable. Now some things that they could of fixed was the pacing in the film. The pacing was all over the place. It almost felt like they didn’t know how to end some scenes or they thought the scene was too long and cut it too early. This also could be a cause of some poor editing. There were some awkward transitions in this film that didn’t make sense. The last thing I want to mention is the plot holes. I feel like the writers had to ignore them or else there wouldn’t have been a film. In the end, Fantastic Beasts is a stunning film that just has a few issues but I still recommend to watch. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You know what was good about “Harry Potter”? It had “Harry Potter” in the title and it was about Harry Potter. In “Fantastic Beasts and where to find them” there are those “beasts”, but the problem is that the movie is not about them and has a single word about where to find them.
The film begins with a battle of a group of mages and a mysterious dark sorcerer and a bunch of newspapers headlines about someone called Grindelwald. Who is it? That’s a good question. If you want to know than go watch sequel, because he is not in this one. The twist of Grindewald’s exposure is very weak, it simply leads to nothing. Throw it out of the movie and nothing will change. Oh, wait, if you do that than it wouldn’t be so interesting to see the sequel. It’s really sad when the first movie of a cycle tries to sell you the sequel.
What is a real pity is the fact that the beasts are absolutely gorgeous, but there’s too little screen time with them. The story just begins when some of them flee, later they become a secondary storyline, giving the first place to Creedence. He is a very powerful wizard, who turns into an obscurus, a dangerous magical creature, by suppressing his magical powers. And someone might say: “But here is your magical beast and a story about it!”, but it is a very cheap move. The viewer clearly understands that the story of the beasts ends with the capturing of the last escaped creature, long before the end of the movie. Who is this Creedence guy? Why should I care for him? The whole movie feels like the creators just stuffed too much and didn’t bother to make some part really good.
But no everything is bad here. Eddy Redmayne (Newt) and Ezra Miller (Creedence) are superb in portraying their characters. You could watch this movie for their performances alone. It’s difficult to say something good about other aspects of this film. The editing feels raggy and awkward, the stories are skin-deep, and the sequel baiting is frustrating. The movie had potential but it lacks of polishness almost in every aspect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' was one of the most coziest movies from 2016 for me. The Wizarding World franchise it's a home for me and even when it shows it's flaws (biggers and minors) I love it anyway. I think this movie was a good starter and even if the tone was not so focused and the revelations were quite predictable, it's a story that I'll keep close to my heart. It was to great to know more about the wizarding world in America and the final scenes (from the Obscurial attacks to the partting of ways) were thrilling, beautiful and emotional. Expand

It does carry on the Harry Potter universe in a sufficiently charming way, but it really comes across as riding the coattails of a successful franchise while not doing enough to build its own compelling story.

What made the Harry Potter series so endearing was its characters. Each character both main and minor had their own compelling arc that was visible in each film and carried on throughout the saga. Fantastic Beasts does have very quirky characters that are incredibly fun to watch and also have enough charm and emotion to make them worth caring about. The performances are suitably strong--with the exception of a few minor characters--and the banter between them makes the film watchable.

But beyond this, the movie has some serious problems that really make the experience entirely forgettable. Though this is certainly surface level, the CGI is just bad at many parts of the movie. They're not all bad. About half of them work just fine, but there are parts in which entire rooms are constructed using computers when it's not even an action sequence and therefore completely unnecessary. Many scenes don't even look finished, and it certainly makes the beasts not-so-fantastic.

Another problem is the story. The plot weaves through a tangled mess of main quests and subplots to the point where I didn't even know what the movie was about when the credits rolled. It gets off to a very slow, boring start and doesn't get much better from there. Not only that, but many crucial details that are essential to the story feel very forced, unbelievable, and shoehorned into the script for the sole purpose of advancing--and therefore creating--a plot.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is sure to entertain long-time fans of Harry Potter, but it's unlikely to have converted any new followers to the franchise and it certainly doesn't have a leg to stand on its own.

Moving to 1920's America setting and removing the angsty teenagers who have to save the world because the negligent adults are too incompetent are both absolute improvements.

Newt himself is an extremely underrated character, and brilliantly portrayed by Eddie Redmayne. See Pop Culture Detective's "The Fantastic Masculinity of Newt Scamander" on Youtube for a better examination, but I'll sum it up here: He's not macho or "The Chosen One" or a witty schmoozer. But he doesn't fall into the typical nerd/genius/outsider stereotypes either. He's quiet, introverted, humble and sensitive, but also confident in his abilities and sympathetic towards his beasts as well as humans.

The only major downside to the movie was that it couldn't decide which movie it wanted to be: a lighthearted romp about chasing down escaped magical beasts, or a dark conflict between wizards, anti-wizard muggles, and dark wizards. I personally preferred the latter, but it would not make a lot of sense to have Newt in a movie purely about that (and of course the former also brings child appeal and toy sales to the table).

The Harry Potter universe is entirely respected. The special effects are well done: it's just like we could adopt some of these strange animals to home, like a cat or something. This time though we aren't at Hogwarts and we are following an entirely new cast of characters, in a different time period, and a different part of the world. The movie does a great job of expanding the scale and lore of the Rowling's universe on the big screen. Most importantly though, Fantastic Beasts brings back that sense of fun that had been missing from the movies since The Goblet of Fire. The new setting and it's unique twists on wizardry rules ensure that Fantastic Beasts is new and fresh enough to ensure that this isn't just a retread, but familiar enough to tap back into that sense of amazement and wonder we felt way back in 2001 when The Sorcerer's Stone first came out. The new cast is just as endearing as the old, only in different ways. Each new character feels distinct enough to carve new paths in our hearts. Each is excellently portrayed and written. The same can't be said for the supporting cast. They are all talented actors playing interesting characters, but the film puts most of it's intention on it's main heroes. Not a bad move, but it left me wanting just a little bit more from the side of the world.

The plot is also a sparse. The majority of it is going on in the background. Instead the majority of what we're watching is Newt and his new friends chase spectacular magical creatures. It's still entertaining, but the main conflict suffers as a result. We can clearly see who the villain is, but he doesn't get much screen time. Of course I can't complain too much about this. With so many of the later Harry Potter movies being something of a drag due to how dark things got, I appreciate this more lighthearted affair and there are still more serious things going on behind the scenes.

This new tale in Harry Potter universe feels like a fresh new start. It hearkens back to glory days of the Harry Potter movies. It stumbles a bit with it's writing and world-building, but all of that can be forgiven because Fantastic Beasts reminded me why I fell in love with these movies all those years ago. It's a brand new adventure with that recognizable magic and original feel.

This movie sucked! LOL, over the top with cheesiness made for 12 year old and under. Modern technology and fantasy shouldn't mix, makes no sense how this can be entertaining. I want my money back...please?

Not a great Harry Potter movie, but defintiely worth watching if you are a fan of Harry Potter. I hope the sequel is better than this. Overall, just an okay movie.

Well, everything's in the title itself, you watch it only to confirm.

I don't want to be so negative like the film critics, but this is a big disappointment for me watching being a film fanatic. I don't think anyone who loved 'Harry Potter' film series would thumb this new beginning. This is not like 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' from the same universe, but different trilogies. I was excited for something like that, as a concept wise, for the fresh tale from from the fresh characters in the same universe. I don't know about the book version, but the film did not click for me.

It had a bunch of nice characters, and to set in the Harry Potter universe, really it should have been a masterpiece. The major drawback was the story. There's nothing to appreciate the screenplay. It's about some creatures from the magical world got out in the human world, just like 'Jumanji'. So our hero struggles to recapture them. Meanwhile, some others too involved in and the reason will be revealed in the final stage.

Nice casting and great visuals. I won't point out its director's fault, because he has done his duty very well. He's also will be the man behind the rest of the sequels. I think it deserved the Oscars for the costume design. Not a bad film, particularly for the kids. Comparing it with the Harry Potter franchise makes it a worst film, but independently it is an okay film. So the initiation was average, but I'm still expecting the follow ups to be much better.

It did have it's boring parts, but most of the time I was intreated by the amazing creativity of the fantastic beasts, and how much of good new hero Newt Scamander was.

The plot is beyond bad, cheesy and forgettable. The main character, which I can't recall the name is a weird Stephen Hawking of Eddie Redmayne. That said, I was really confused about his Oscar award. It's not acting; he is this way and it doesn't add to the film. The CGI work is incredible, a bit overwhelming. A bunch of good actors misplaced with weird lines and a fast subplot that tried to be serious. People told me it's a children's movie. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was a children's movie, so to speak, and worked a hundred times better. It bugs me that this movie was done to throw the audience a vast universe of possibilities so I'm sure there will be others to come. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is an insult to the original Harry Potter movies. Is this how old Star Wars fans felt when they saw The Phantom Menace?
The first part of the movie is terrible, it's slow and uneventful. It was still an ok movie by that point. In the second half, however, ok turned to utter **** How can JK Rowling go from writing a plot twist spanning 7 books and 8 movies to writing this turd? She violated the rules of her own world by approving this. Graves' wand connecting randomly? No, the cores of the wands have to be the same. That was reserved for the climax of three of the old movies, and they just throw it around here? No. And Obliviate rain? Give me a **** break. The people in the theater were laughing, I was crying inside.
The movie's score, which in some bad movies is good, is completely terrible. James Newton Howard, you are not a bad composer, how could you do this? He attempts to emulate the previousl movies' score from start to finish, and he fails terribly. You're no John Williams, son. Be original.
I'm not even going to mention the cringe-worthy CGI...
Johnny Depp was the only positive aspect of this movie. I am giving this one star because of him.
Rowling, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Some movies are made for children up to 10 years old. Clearly this is one of those. It has some nice visual effects, but apart from that, I just couldn't stay and watch it till the end.

Sadly follows its predecessors as wildly dissapointing portrayals of the wonderfully complex and irresistably charming world of Harry Potter. Can someone fire Yates already?

It's not a terrible film, it has its moments, but you never get close to the characters, you quickly forget them when the film is over, and if they make a sequel, it won't be first on your films to see list. Eddie Redmayne was miscast, too ponderous, too layed back, and mumbling right through the film. If you had that many fantastic beasts you would at least smile now and then or be the slightest bit exited. He was like watching paint dry. Poor script, trying to be many things but being none, especially a romantic film with such a dour main actor. The ending summed it all up. Not enough character storytelling and character's you care about. Which is what made the harry Potter films so enjoyable. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not as good as the trailer or BoxOffice would have you believe. I struggled to watch it through to the end. It felt like in order to enhance objectivity, I had to watch the whole thing not because I was willing to. Quite a good number of the scenes were predictable, lacking in substance and senseless. A lot of things just didn't add up. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone I like. And like someone said, it is nowhere near Harry Potter. Expand
