At times Evil Dead Rise feels like an OK entry to the Evil Dead franchise and at other times it feels like any other generic possession horror movie that doesn't really match the soul or feel of the original movies. It flipped back and forthAt times Evil Dead Rise feels like an OK entry to the Evil Dead franchise and at other times it feels like any other generic possession horror movie that doesn't really match the soul or feel of the original movies. It flipped back and forth a bit too much for me.

Cinematography and sound design were pretty solid. Sometimes it felt a little too clean and crisp for such a frantic franchise, but that's probably me nitpicking. Overall they were great.

The characters felt pretty flat overall, an exception for me was Alyssa Sutherland (Ellie, the mother) who did a pretty decent job. The rest of the characters felt unmemorable. I just didn't feel much of a connection to any of them and there wasn't much development or performances that stood out to me. Some people are crying about an all-female primary cast or "woke" kid characters, but that had zero impact on why I wasn't very impressed. All of that weird, political pontification is irrelevant in my opinion.

There wasn't a lot to the story and the writing/dialogue wasn't particularly impressive. A lot of it felt average at best. At times the film relied too much on predictable jump scares and not the kind of horror that sticks with you. The original movies found a way to weave in a demented sense of fun or goofiness along with moments of trippy psychedelia that were absent in this iteration. It picked up a bit more at the end, but I had hoped for more of that throughout the movie.

Some of the CGI was spotty in certain scenes. Part of why I loved the originals so much involved the craft and effort put into a lot of the special effects, gore, and action. This felt a bit more dialed in when it comes to these aspects.

Overall, it was a little better than the average possession movie I see these days, but a little below average when you consider the franchise it's a part of. There were some decent nods and references to the originals, but it didn't quite have the same spirit - the execution felt a bit off. I would maybe give it a 6.5 if I could, but will lean more towards a 6 given the options available to me. It's worth a watch if you're a big fan of Evil Dead and also if you're a casual horror fan. I'd maybe wait until it's cheaper to rent online or when it lands on a streaming service though.

This movie didn't get me at all.

Look, to be honest, I was expecting some crazy delirium horror movie, like the original. That doesn't mean I was not accepting something new. In this case, the "new" was kinda boring.

The contemporaneity sounds unnecessary. This feels like an ordinary horror movie with Evil Dead elements - and they're not enough to save it. There are a lot of predictable jumpscares and the evil behind all of it feels artificial. With some repertoire, you wouldn't find this scary anyway, but at least some uncanny valley could make it crazy enough to be really uncomfortable. The idea of being trapped in the building could work, but the environment was not scary enough.

Another factor that made me quit this movie was the total neglect of character development. I'm not asking for an Oscar drama. Just give me something to be afraid of with the characters I'm seeing. Please. The gore was good, but as I mentioned, without connection with the characters or trama, gore feels impersonal.

Anyway, that was disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The mother, the sister, and the three daughters.....yes, I said three daughters, all were completely wooden. Why should I care about what happens to these people? The three daughters don't have any real emotions about what is happening; which is to say the acting is just awful. I know teenagers aren't known to be great actors but come on.

There's no character building at all, the first daughter is a DJ, the second is a political activist who wants to "Eat the Rich" (maybe she can eat the rich virtue signaling Hollywood elites who made this movie), and the adorable youngest daughter who just exists. The ultimate protagonist, the Aunt, is just a blank slate and also generally is a bad actress. What else is there to say? Nothing seemed exciting. Some X factor I can't put my finger on was missing. I keep circling back to the bad acting and lack of characterization. The creators also seemed to be scared to actually show true brutality. When the mother gets tied up in the elevator, I was expecting her to be violated by elevator cables (similar to the other films) but they couldn't go that far I guess, the tattoo machine got pulled away at the last second, the cheese grater just caused a scrape on a leg, the peep hole hallway scene is largely off camera, etc. Sure, they throw in tons of blood and gore but the dark humor of creative ways to kill someone wasn't in this film.

I will say something positive about it and that is the cinematography. Wow. There were certain parts of the film where I was struck by the visual art that I was witnessing. Other than that, I got an occasional chuckle from the dark humor and the sheer evil of the mother (she was a highlight). But man oh man, the supporting actors were just terrible. Can you imagine the horror of being a child or a teenager and witnessing your own mother die, come back to life, and then become a demon? The snot, tears, and shock washing over me in that moment would be indescribable.....and yet these three daughters take it all in stride. It just doesn't work. The blonde DJ girl is just an awful actress, holy cow....and I am not going to pretend for a single second that she was hired for anything other than certain political reasons.

PS: I can't help but wonder if the creators of the film are making some kind of subtle commentary by killing off this woke little family. Are they punishing the family for being leftists, is that the joke? Or are they supposed to be likeable and are we supposed to care about them because they are leftists? I doubt the creators thought that deeply about it. But it was a thought that crossed my mind.

It's surprising that he and Bruce Campbell (the star of the others in the series) are Executive Producers on this 5th installment, because it clearly lacks the punch of the originals. The plot revolves around a mother, her sister and her 3 kids who have to face the release of the malevolent force that viciously destroys everything in its path. The expected elements are there, zoom flying cameras (made much easier by drones), airborne body parts, flooding blood and creepy voices, but it all lacks any originality or impact. Even worse, there's no humor, which was the hallmark of the earlier ones. Basically, this is another "possession" thriller that doesn't come close to the excitement that's expected from this franchise. Expand

No humour other than some mild jokes thrown in at the wrong time. This movie has a few of the callbacks to the old Evil Dead movies, but they are few and far between other than the Necronomicon and the camera hurtling towards someone as they become possessed. This feels so soulless (and not in the possessed by a demon way) I've seen so many horror movies exactly like this and this is not what I want from the Evil Dead movies. I will admit the mother in this movie did a good job and there were a few scenes that were kind of tense, but this is the worst of the Evil Dead series. The gore is mostly CG and not even close to as nasty as the first two or the remake. The movie itself is totally generic with pointless and out of place callbacks that would do JJ Abrams proud. The director doesn't have the flare of Fede Alvarez, much less Sam Raimi. More like McG or Brett Ratner. I have been to Army of Darkness opening night and the Evil Dead remake opening night. Both were sold out and the audience was crazy. Cheering, clapping, screaming, laughing. The audience at Evil Dead Rise? Completely silent from beginning to end. Sold out theater not a sound besides some coughing and COVID spreading. Not even a single solitary clap at the end.

The critics were bought off or they just don't understand Evil Dead anymore than they understood Star Wars when they gave The Last Jedi the highest rating any Star Wars ever received and heaped praise on Force Awakens. Evil Dead Rise is a total waste of time and money. The first Evil Dead movie that I didn't like at all. It wasn't even good enough for the made for streaming category it was originally created as and should have never gone theatrical. Blow!

It was kinda meh.

Personally, I like it when a franchise knows what it is; and I feel like with Evil Dead, that has pretty much always been the case. The franchise has always been known for its crazy blend of extreme gore, slapstick comedy and some absolutely horrifying monster designs, but in 2013 they rebooted the franchise and tried very hard to make a serious horror movie - but somehow they kinda of succeeded at that. Evil Dead Rise however, tries to land somewhere in between these two categories of horror and comedy, but ultimately it doesn’t really deliver in either department. There’s still some amazing special effects, great cinematography and a very entertaining third act to be found here though, but 2/3s of the movie is very much like a generic Hollywood horror-movie, without any of the self irony that the series has been known for since its second installment.
The music and sound design definitely doesn’t help with this either, as all the audio is just too polished and, well… Hollywood. There’s no sense of identity. Ultimately though, it’s a decent horror flick, but not worthy of the critics praise.
I imagine a lot of critics like it because it’s been so long since a genuine splatter movie gained mainstream attention, and while that is definitely nice to see, there’s tons of better options out there from decades back.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Only good thing about this movie is the gore, its similar to TWD.
the bad:
Jump scares predictable, many already used movie tropes like woodchipper (DP2), eye torn out of face (TWD), creepy smiles (IT), Crawling on the roof (Exorcist), person stabbed but keeps going (Scream), Car gets stuck (literally every Jump scare movie), Crawling around the car (JP1). Also it sets up things that it doesn't use, like it gets a long shot of a vault, why is the vault there? Why do we forget it exists after its scene? What about Room 27 or 28 was it? That's how forgettable it is because it wasn't used, why have it in if you arent going to use it? if you load a gun you sure as hell should use it. instead the characters fluff around for half an hour trying to open it only to hop in the elevator? that we know is dangerous. What idiot would hop into a destroyed elevator if they've been told/seen its dangerous? Maybe room 28 could have been something worse but nope, ElEvaTor I gO IN nOw CoS DAh? If I wanted a comedy I'd watch this again, cos its similar to every other "scary movie" that tries to hard. I've been scammed, and I'm dissapointed that all the tension that could have been. Immediately released. No build up, No tension, just boom scary thing here, and that should do! honestly is this what horror has become?

Kids find a book after a earthquake, the words get spoken, and bad things happen. Not even close to as good as Evil Dead 2 or Army of darkness. doesn't have the feel or the humor. I know Bruce Cambell is getting old and doesn't want to do play Ash anymore which we should have gotten more Evil dead movies with him 20+ years ago but its time to recast Ash then and get back to Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness style movies again.

I dont want any more Evil Dead remakes or reimagining's or what ever. Just get us back on track with Ash again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Maybe it's my excitement talking because I still wasn't so sure of my rating, but considering I walked out of the theater with a big smile on my face after watching it, Evil Dead Rise did its job. And it's a good thing it did because I really wanted it to.

I really needed a horror movie that wasn't afraid to be grotesque. One that widely acknowledges that that's its strongest suit.
Yes, you can argue that the violence and gallons of blood are over the top, but if you carry the Evil Dead name you know that's what you're going to see. Evil Dead Rise is a film that successfully does what films like Terrifier fail to do. What do I mean by that? Simple. The gore.
The gore isn't meant to be comical, it's meant to be disgusting and horrifying. That's the journey this film offers. And yes I'm also well aware that there are much more brutal movies out there, but as I said, this one manages to make you feel inside an oppressive state of mind and not that you're laughing at how fake the prosthetics look.
The ''Everyone dies at dawn'' part was excellent in that regard. And what really surprised me was a single piece in its final part that gives it an interesting dimension of drama because it provides recognition of the terrible events that took place. The small frame with the keychain of the family that stars in this story. Considering their fate, it adds a tragic dimension that I had not seen in this saga. It may be an insignificant detail, but I liked it. Whether you're a fan of the horror genre or not, this option in my opinion is great.

the best one of the intro shot my god ,when the title of the film came that was so awesome

acting was too good for everyone . all the elements was put in the film might be seen as gross for some people ,but i loved it

negative is not that great first half was too slow maybe for the thrill building up but 2nd half was great too great

after lights out this is the best

and the good thing about this film is it is happened in one night

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The same formula and the same structure of the previous films but with a different setting, a much darker and more oppressive atmosphere, becoming a truly terrifying and bloody film.

I liked the diversity of characters since it makes a difference with the rest of the saga where they were all young adults of practically the same age without any distinction between them. Here we have a family made up of a single mother, her three children, one of whom is a teenage boy, a girl who is also a teenager, a little girl and her aunt who is visiting. The rest are neighbors of the same apartment building where the family lives and must cooperate to survive the massacre.

This is just really good horror craftmanship. Sound design is perfect, the actors does a fine job and the writing is more than sufficient.

I'm really happy about a modern horror movie without ecessive use of CGI. Either its subtle enough for me not to notice or the F/X-artists are just very good at their job.

I would have prefered the movie to keep with the cabin in the woods trope, but really that's just a matter of taste. If you like classic horror this is a must-see.

The film did an overall good job. But it is missing 3 major things, Length and Campiness, and the overall feeling that ASH brings to the franchise, they try with the little time they had but it wasn't enough.

Ratings Rise:
VFX 10/10, extremely gory, blood everywhere, creepy and unsettling stuff.

Story and Plot: 6/10 simple, short, maybe misguided during certain scenes.

Characters: 6/10, Not too bad, risks were taken, characters were somewhat interesting, but not entirely.

Acting, Logic and immersion: 8/10, great really great, but seriously, Kitchen Knives use them, stop looking at the thing that's going to kill you so much.

Pacing: 8/10, Good pacing for such a short film.

Overall a good horror film, that made me sick a little, don't eat anything before or during like I did(Unless you're macho enough), when they said they took out parts of the film because it's too gory and scary I believe them. Not the scary part but the gory part, I mean damn son this is some good VFX and practicals in this movie.

I bestow upon you an 8/10, with more length and more badass scenes, with a little tweak to logic in some scenes this would have been a perfect Evil Dead Movie, good job, hopefully, the next movie learns from this one, and improves on its shortcomings.

This is a movie that doesn't fully commit to either side, and instead feels like an underwhelming lukewarm middle between the two extremes. The one thing the movie does try to do to stand out is offer a different setting, going away from the typical, creepy log cabin we've become accustomed to and instead takes place in a LA based apartment complex. The only problem is the movie does very little with this change, and there really isn't a memorable set piece or action sequence taken from this change, it might as well have taken place in a log cabin. This, like the evil dead 2013 're-make/sequel' of fede alverez are focused on gore and have a more serious tone. Evil Dead Rise starts strong but it has all the beats you'd expect from an evil dead movie, barely any surprises or new creative ideas are injected which is unfortunate. The ending leaves a lot desired because you've seen it done before, but better. I've watched this movie 3 times thus far to see if it would help, but alas it didn't. Gore = on point, story is meh, and the ending is just not creative at all. Giving throwbacks to the original or so is neat (a small cameo can be found if you listen to closely) but I feel like this movie directed by Lee Cronin is more of a "safe play" than something original. And let's be honest, both the 2013 and this one have only strong women in the lead role, we are in desperate need of an Ash character in this franchise again, who can be serious with its quirky joke drops from time to time but it is heavily focused on pushing the female leads in this franchise. Thus I score it a 6. Expand

It feels like they tried to modernise the concept whilst keeping some of the core ideas. It suffers from having mostly forgettable characters and no real protagonist that goes on a journey. The horror is intense and entertaining but this isn’t enough for an Evil Dead film. The series deserves more. So this is my least favourite of the films and TV show but better than the games. The last thirty minutes was excellent but the first hour meandered a bit too much, they just didn’t have enough content. I enjoyed it enough. No one got help from the four death mannequins who were their neighbors, and instead just watched them die. Beth sees someone on the street and cant yell loud enough but doesnt even think to throw something at the hobo to get their attention. They watch demon elle talk about sllitting them open and just stand in shock. Beth watches her supposedly dead sister sit straight up like the exorcist and thinks her sister is alive???

Is it too much to ask for horror movie characters who will behave like real people?! I mean, come on, who in the mother**** piece of **** **** **** slime whore dog mother**** **** would just stand there while this thing that is contorted in highly unnatural ways, all bloody, with veins like a dead person, muttering ghoulish nonsense, throwing eggs into a pan wth blood walks towards them?! It makes no sense!

besides Beth in the last 5 minutes, Kassie was the only one who did anything of value! And she almost let the demon into the apartment! Sheesh.

Anyways, meh movie. The nonsense was funny though.

Nothing but violence and blood. Story is not well written and tempo is not good.

I was really looking forward to this film and it didn't even live up to the 2013 film that didn't really capture the feel of Evil Dead anyway and then this film can't even be classed as anywhere near the same level as Original 3 Evil Dead films. As an Evil Dead Film awful doesn't have the feel the scares or the quality of Evil Dead and as a horror film it's like a film you'd show to someone who had an interest in starting to watch horror films for the first time but didn't want a scary or creepy one so you just show them a badly written film you laugh at but they would think is scary so not good. I had high hopes and got extremely let down and it was I admit better on rewatch but still the things i have written are still apparent to me when watching. Expand
