The speed was great throughout, it blended the scenes perfectly, and really told a powerful story with a fantastic, believeable cast. The cast was without a doubt a huge strong point. All the actors did a wonderful job and did a great job at portraying their roles. The music was done so well and I've been singing the songs all day since I saw it. I wish it had a longer Theatrical run because I was lucky enough to see it in a theater and the music should be heard through a theater to be truly appreciated and received correctly. Sad to see it's not having the film release it deserves in theaters. Expand

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FILM.
Summary: Like the Song, this film is a "Work of Art"

Director Jonathan Butterell has done a flawless job transferring the West End stage musical to the big screen. While the film stays very true to the stage version, enhancements in fleshing out characters, relationships, addition of songs (Hugo's "This Was Me") enhance the story.

Casting is spot on, with very strong performances from newcomer Max Harwood (perfect age appropriate casting; shame on the upcoming film "Dear Evan Hansen"--the trailers make me cringe). Lauren Patel (Pritti Pasha), Sarah Lancashire (Margaret New), Shobna Gulati (Ray), Richard E. Grant (Hugo) and Sharon Hogan (Miss Hedge) deliver very strong performances.

The West Ends stage show is incredible, but the film absolutely is brilliant. Why the West End stage show hasn't yet transferred to Broadway is a mystery to me. A US premiere of the stage musical is slated for Los Angeles in January 2022, and I hope that it makes its way to Broadway.

Beyond expectation! It is a joy to watch this magical musical. Great dance numbers, staging, and a wonderful cast. The story is more than one could wish for.

The main character is as warm as well magnetic. The songs are catchy and in the end the story leaves a pleasant taste in the mouth. Expand

Grant, Shobna Gulati and Ralph Ineson. Of course it has some serious themes about tolerance and acceptance but it also has some amusing moments as well. It is fairly cheesy and features some cliches but all in all its a fun film I enjoyed, so I'd recommend it to others. Expand

The life-affirming musical, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, breathes new life into the musical movie genre in bright, beautiful, and prideful ways.

Based on the West End musical, and inspired by a true story, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a coming-of-age story about a 16-year-old high school student, Jamie New, who dreams of getting out of his small-minded town and becoming a well-known drag queen. With the help of his supportive mother, close friends, and mentor, Jamie learns what it means to be your authentic self. The film stars newcomer Max Harwood who portrays the titular Jamie with all the flair, flamboyancy, and depth needed to fill the shoes of Jamie Campbell, the real-life inspiration of the film. Richard E. Grant’s fabulous portrayal of an aging drag queen who mentors Jamie is also a standout. Grant also performs a beautiful song that not only provides historical context but also pays tribute to LGBTQ activists and those who died during the AIDS epidemic.

Fans of the stage musical and concept album (like me) will delight at the way director Jonathan Butterell expertly reimagines the show for the screen. Butterell grounds the film with beautifully colorful production elements, interesting aspect ratios, and musical sequences. Musical theatre tropes muddle the film, but the talented cast brings it together and creates something truly special by the end.

While on the surface this film seems predictable and cheesy, its depth is actually surprising. But it is Jamie’s message of self-love, hope, and pride that is what everybody who has ever felt “othered” will be talking about.

unfortunately a disappointment. I had high expectations, both for the story and the cast, but it didn't work out for me.
